The General (retd) and Presidential Ambitions

Until the publicity related to HiCorp led byƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the son-in-law of General (retd) Sarath Fonseka hit the News Headlines through AsiaTribune, I had a great deal of respect for General (retd) Sarath Fonseka.
Leading the military and other Defence Forces against the Tamil Tiger Terrorist LTTE to victory placed Fonseka on a high pedestal. His skills as a frontal leader and to win a 30 year old war in less than 3 years was an admirable fƒÆ’†’ƒ”š‚©te.
But incorporating the HiCorp by his son-in-law in the USA, whereƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ he is now accused of certain alleged fraudulent and possible criminal activities, brings down the gloss in one fell swoop.
It is also alleged that, Fonseka worked together with other Defence Forces high officers to divert military supply orders to HiCorp. Then it is alleged that, Fonseka wished to appoint some of his close associates to replace the Ranks upon his retirement, possibly to continue this commercial insider-deal, malpractice.
Fonseka who was given the full security detail as he desired, by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, is now traversing as the President-in-Waiting, in style.
From the images and the body language, one might observe that Fonseka is brushing aside all the negative signs with aplomb.
If and when Fonseka won the mandate to lead the country, corruption which he wishes to eradicate, will have a free hand led by Fonseka family, HiCorp and other members of the Club HiCorp. This is very bad news indeed.
I like to hear a wider audience of LankaWeb readers, expressing their opinions, on this matter.

I am not sure LanakWeb readers could express their opinions in Lanakweb. Let us see whether this goes in.
Firstly, which made you to be so convinced of this arms deal ? The letter head of so called British Borneo was made in Sri Lanka. The address of the same is a house in Queensland and the company is “just a registered name”. I am sure this deal is a mudslinging effort by Tamils, government does not bother to stop it. Didn’t you have sense to read the heading “innocent civilians” in proper perspective ?
Fonseka ( he is not a Catholic as you predicted) is in anyway not assumed to be 100% clean by any Sri Lankan. So is the President. So is your idol LKY of Singapore and Mahathir of Mayasia. These people are not expected to live modest lives by any standards. Publishing their family photos is common way of classical politics in Sri Lanka. Remember minister Banda’s photo while eating “ham bacon” was published in “Eththa” ( now Lanka Truth) pathhare ?
Fonseka and Rajapakse used each other. That is all. But something good happened to the whole world because of this alliance together with our other heroes.
The irony is we are divided as you correctly mentioned and cleverly predicted. As the Sri Lankans cannot afford to feed another family tree, it is best that they stick to Rajapakse, at least for this time. But remember, all are thieves and we vote for the better one!
