Should Sri Lanka continue democracy or adopt a more stringent Socialist Dictatorship ?

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ China will not beƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  where it is to day if it had allowedƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  the West to meddle into its affairs.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  It kept ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ away ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the foreign, as well as the local ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ reactionary elementsƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  through out its period of economic and social development from usingƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  obstructiveƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  tactics. Even Russia after the West manipulated to disband the Union of Soviets , kept awayƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  foreign interferenceƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  into its internal affairs.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Burma which also keeps away ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the West from intervening into its internal affairs will no doubt set aside its present difficulties to emergeƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  as a economically developed country.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  India is a developing Nation but ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-democraticƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ path itƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  is following ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ will ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ take a long time for it to come even close ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ to the standard of development reached by China.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ If Sri Lanka will fail in its attempt to reach the proposed goals of development , it would be because of the unpatriotic elements someƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  seeking their own political benefits,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  others through lopsided ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-ethnic sentimentsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚, and yet others seeking to divide the Country through their bias against the Majority Community, and being manipulated by the West.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ In this very crucial stage of development in Sri Lanka, ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ all Sri Lankans have to put their shoulder to the wheel without leaving it to the government to take forward its development projects.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  The question is whether all our people are patriotic enough to bury what ever hatchets of discord and unite together to develop our country to make it a nation able to compete with the developed nations of the world.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ This ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ would only be possibleƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  ifƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  the Sri Lankans irrespective ofƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  their communal affiliation are genuinely patriotic towards their land of birth.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  A patriot is one who lovesƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  the country into which ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ one was born, ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ whether it is poor or rich, whether it is barren, or lush, with all different ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ communities living in it. A patriot is one who is prepared to make whatever sacrifices in the defence of his ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ country, participate in its progress joining hands with all those who populate the country, placing trust in one another, no matter of what colour they are, what their belief systems are, and what language they speak.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ But if anyƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  group of these people do not agree with those others ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…”their own ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ compatriots-who share the country with them, and demands a separate State carved out for that group of people, ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ then that group of people ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ are not patriots.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Because no real patriots would want toƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  separate themselves from others living in the same country, sharing inƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  its poverty or in its prosperity, because they are different from them.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Are the Tamils of Sri Lanka Patriots ?

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ In that sense if the Tamils of Sri Lanka want a separate corner broken away from the motherland for themselves, they are then not Patriots ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The expatriates who have adopted the citizenship of the country of their residence owes allegiance toƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  theirƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  adopted country, and respect its laws and culture. Yet deep inside them, they have not forsaken their love and affectionƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  toƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  their motherland. But, on the other hand, if they contribute and incite others toƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  breakaway from the motherland to form a Tamil homelandƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  they have thenƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  forfeited their right not only to beƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  true patriots, but also to call themselves Sri Lankans.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ But the expatriate Sri Lanka Tamils have forsaken that natural human instinct, and their ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ denial ofƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  an attachment to a motherland is evidenced ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ by their ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-high comedy ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…- of setting up a Provincial Government.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  It ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ further proves their disaffection to Sri Lanka as their motherland and therefore they have forfeited their right to be patriotic Sri Lankans.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ If the TamilsƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  in Sri Lanka want a separate Tamil homeland, or sentimentally desire to be different from the rest of the people- their own ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ compatriots, they are separating themselves from the motherland to become ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Tamil racists with a narrow agenda, and therefore do not fall in to the category ofƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  true Patriots of Sri Lanka.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Be it Tamils or Muslims they should not uphold their minority status to compete with theƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Sinhala majority, but assume their patriotic role to collaborate withƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  the Sinhala sharing in the political, economic , and socialƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  development of the motherland which is our common heritage. The Muslims living on the fringe of motherland concept, promote their religious difference by building mosques in every village to compete with the Sinhala, there by doing a disservice to the country.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  They should instead build their mosques within themselves and participate more fully in the defence, development and progress of theƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  motherland.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The demand of the international Community to ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ devolve political rights to the ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Tamils people is ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ an attempt to break up the unity of the people separating them into communities.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  They have noƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  special love or responsibility to the Sri Lanka or the Tamil people other than to keep the country divided and undeveloped and dependant on the West.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ There is no necessity for the Tamils to ask forƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  devolution of political power, as they as Sri Lankans sharingƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  the same ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ motherland have the political rights and powers ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ common to every one. But the Tamils are misusing that power to develop as a separate entity different from the rest.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  This false notion of having no political power of their own could be avoided if they switch to National politics, instead of turning inwards to narrow provincial politics.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ That is why the 13thƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Amendment itselfƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  thought out and forced upon us by the Indian Government is today a paradox . It was introduced to make it easy forƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Prabhakaran the terrorist to negotiate with the Government of Sri Lanka to set up a separate Tamil Eelam State, thus breaking up the unitary state of Sri Lanka. ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ After the elimination of terrorism, demerging of the North and East, ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the 13th Amendment is an obsoleteƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  piece of Legislation, which we can easily ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ and conveniently delete from the Constitution.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ If the Sri Lanka Tamils think they have been denied political rights, it is they who have denied it for themselves, setting up political parties for ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-TamilsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚, and separating themselves from National politics getting themselves completely involved with the welfare of the TamilsƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  making the South and the Sinhala and Muslim communities no concern of theirs.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Tamils will have no future in Sri Lanka if they continue to fight with the Sinhala, build no confidence in the Sinhala people , ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ compete with the Sinhala and covert aƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  separatist Agenda. Their future, as much as that of the Sinhala and Muslims depends on the unity of the communities.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ TNA has a habit of consulting India with regard to their rights as citizen of Sri Lanka.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Indian governmentƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  who wants to satisfy TamilNadu State will not give any advise useful to the Tamil people of Sri Lanka, but give only advice detrimental to unity and development of Sri Lanka and distance the Tamil Community from the main political, andƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  social stream.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ If the Tamils do not follow their ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-stupidƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ political leaders , or Pakiyasothys, Kumar Davids, Narapalasinghams,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  some of them ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ seeking narrow political benefits by organising political parties with ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…- Tamil label ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…- orƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  othersƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  collect financialƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  aid from ant-Sri Lanka movements, they would naturallyƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  be with theƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  main body politics along with the Sinhala and Muslims, as children of the motherland common to every one of us.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ If the Tamils of Sri LankaƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  55 percent of themƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  livingƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  in the South with the Sinhala and Muslims, say that the Sinhala people should not be allowed to settle down in the North and East they are doing an injustice to their Sinhala compatriots, and expose themselves as unpatriotic racists, and damage their image as intelligent people who are capable of forgetting the past to go forward hand in handƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  with all communities to build a greater nation of Sri Lankans..

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The Tamil National Alliance if they really want to help the Sri Lanka Tamil Community will not demand devolution of political power- a demand which is not for the benefit of the ordinary Tamil people but a means to consolidate political power in their own hands to ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-herdƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ the Tamil people according to their political needs, and ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ whims and fancies.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  If they are interest is in the development of the conditions of the Tamil people, it should bring the Tamils into the fold of the general population of the country without segregating them as Tamils.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ In order to do that the Tamil National Alliance should drop the wordƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-TamilƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚, from the nomenclature of their Alliance.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  It should just be ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…- National AllianceƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚, so that it will not only be an alliance of Tamils, but also the Sinhala, the Muslims and others ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ as well.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  So should it be with TULF, and EPDF.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  They should open their political parties to al Sri Lankans without distinction of their communal belonging.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ This is where the International Community, the UN, Human right activists, the Amnesty International, Robert O Blake the pall bearer for extinct Sri Lanka terrorists, and IndiaƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  have erred and continue to err calling the government for devolution of power to the ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-ethnic minorityƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  There is no need for devolution of power to the Tamils if they are patriots working together with their compatriots the Sinhala, Muslims and others who are also patriots of Sri Lanka.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The leader of the Tamil United Liberation FrontƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Anandasanagaree most hypocrite of all should re-examine his political stand after the elimination of terrorism by the Government Forces under the politicalƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  leadership of the President Mahinda Rajapakse and pose to himself the question as to from who the Tamils of Sri Lanka have to be liberated. The Tamils are only one composite community of the Sri Lankan Nation.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The Tamils ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ are as free as any other group of their compatriots in Sri Lanka ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Therefore,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…- TULF ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ is an anomaly. It is high time it is scrappedƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  altogether, andƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  find anotherƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  title dropping the word ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-TamilƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚, because we should not speak any more of Tamils, Sinhala or Muslims when speaking of Sri Lankans.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Then we also have the Eelam PeopleƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢sƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Democratic Party of Douglas Devenanda another hypocrite, a Minister of the Government of the President Mahinda Rajapakse at that, ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ yet differentiating himself from the main political stream , by continuing the separatist ideology.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  He should have taken a lesson from Vinayagamurthi Muralitharan ( Karuna Amman), who is a great Sri Lankan coming from the Tamil Community, who despite having been a terrorist gave up all that to immerse himself in the entirety of national body of ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Sri Lanka.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Anandasangaree is a senior politician in the evening of his life . But he still continues toƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  defend the Tamils, asking for a Indian Model Federal Constitution and devolve political power to the Tamils.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  He isƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  another person working for a Tamil homeland ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-magic wordƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ as he calls it.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Even that is not quite evident.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  In an interview when he was asked whether he would like to be a Chief Minister in a Provincial Council or a Minister in the Central Government, he saidƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  given the choice he would opt for the latter.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ At least in his old age it is time that he demands the Tamils to ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ trust the Sinhala people and work together with them for the development of the country not seeking any more to separate themselves from the main body politics of Sri Lanka.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  The Tamils should forget their narrow Communal interests and participate in National Politics.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ But both Anadasangaree and Douglas Devananda are notƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  true patriots of Sri Lanka as long as they continue with their partisan politics which show that they still have a personal axe to grind.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Karuna Amman left the political party to which he belonged to participate in National politics. He joined the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  He is an example for Tamils of Sri Lanka toƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  understand how the country and the people in it could be united to work together to develop the motherland which belongs to all of us. The time is running out for communal based politics. Therefore it would be in the interest ofƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  the people that the Tamils forget their Tamilness in politics.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Apart from the Tamils we also have the regularly berating Sinhala politicians who are not patriots either, but mere politiciansƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  seeking their own personalƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  benefits what ever happens to the country.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Should they be left alone to whither away into oblivion or more drastic methodsƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  be used to put them out of the way of development and progress whichƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Sri Lanka is unmistakablyƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  makingƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  with the Mahinda Chintanaya , inƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  the climate of emergence of Asia as an economic giant, opposed to what it was the West.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Today both UNP and the JVP are far behind their commitment to the progress and development of the country therefore to the welfare of the people.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  With Sarath Fonseka they are only flogging a dead horse, without falling in line with the government to pursueƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  the path of development that has been opened, with the financial crisis in the west and the economic development of China, Russia and India.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ When greater developments are taking place and the Western Countries are waiting to stopƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  such development accusing us for various ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-made upƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ abuses , UNP and JVP are falling into the trap of the West accusingƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  our own President and hisƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  government, trying to put the people against the President and the government. They do not realise what is ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ at stake is far greater than releasing Sarath Fonseka from the prison. Sarath Fonseka had been given a sentence by a military court and it is for him to appeal to what ever authority for his release.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Ranil Wickramasinghe is accusing that the government is trying to evict the low incomeƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  dwellersƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  from Colombo city to sell lands and buildings to Chinese and the rich trying to make ColomboƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  a city of millionaires.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Gayantha Gunatilleke of UNP is accusing the government for high cost of coconut, bread, dhal and sugar , and fraudulent means of acquiring a two third Majority.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Tissa Attanayake of UNP accusesƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  the government for demarcating ward boundaries secretly.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Mangala Samarasinghe accuses the government for ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚¦.land grabbing exercise done inƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  collaboration with certain multi-national Chinese companies,ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ adding that Chinese prisoners are building the Hambantota harbour .ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  He makes accusations without any truth or evidence .ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  He made similarƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  false allegations against the President along with his friend the late Sooriyaarchchi that the President Mahinda RajapakseƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  had given large sums of money to Prabhakaran.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ All these peopleƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  so blinded by jealousy, anger and disappointment at theirƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  losing hope of coming to any sort of political power in the near future, make up false accusations hoping to put the people against the President and the Government.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ There are on the other hand the media in various forms carrying out accusations even portraying the President as aƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-HitlerƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  They cannot , however, cause serious damage to the government which carries on its development projects despite their ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-hecklingsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ .

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ In the meantime the JVP making use of the University studentsƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  to make manifestations against the government, giving a helping hand for the International Community ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…”the West , awaiting to topple the government as they did in the case of Iran under Mossadeq, Chile under Salvadore Allande or Guatamala under Jacobo Arbenz.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Perhaps it would be this ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-democracyƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ that would hamper the tremendous development programme put into operation in Sri Lanka by its President and the Government. The people living in the country do not see ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ these unbelievableƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  development that had been taking place in Sri Lanka since 2005,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  and therefore unable to appreciate it.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ These persons, whether they are politicians , Trade unionists, journalists, media, and foreign interferers who ever they are, if they obstruct the development of the Country as a whole have to be controlled and stopped by an authoritative government beyond the range of an executive Presidency.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Therefore it may perhaps not be too late to shelve ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-democracyƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ for some time to go beyond the executive Presidency and put in place a socialist form of a Dictatorship, at least until we haveƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  stabilised the present development process.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  If we were to have a protective shield to keep off foreign interventions, we may keepƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  China and Russia privy to our intentions.

  1. callistus Says:

Charles, what you say is quite true. The government must get tough on these local reactionaries and unwanted meddlers. First of all the fat man, skinny man and the skinny old man must be locked up for instigating riots by using university students forcibly.

  2. Nanda Says:

You cannot lock up everyone without reason. First the laws should be pass to punish those who poison the students. Students doing politics should be expelled. Before this parents shoudl be educated to understand and make sure students do not become pawns to greedy politikos.

    Hi everybody,

This is an excellent article. This addresses the real threat that Sinhalese have been facing from local and foreign elements. I was just getting ready ask Sinhalese communities to tell me what kind of sovereignty Sri lanka has and to have long debate about it and also a solution to deal with threat. Please, my answer to this article going to be very long long one and therefore, I need time prepare for it and I hopefully will come back tomorrow.

  4. Siri Says:

I congratulate Mr. Charles.S.Perera on this very well thought out article. I believe that we can achieve all we need within the framework of our present system of government. However a few amendments to the constitution will be needed such as to prohibit the use of ethinic, religious or caste names for political parties, make it an offence to call for division of the country or demad for greater privileges for a particular group of individuals than what is available to the others. All citizens should enjoy equal rights and have the option of living anywhere in the country where they want. State employs should be banned from paticipating in politics while being in Government service like in the old days, trade unions should be by trade and politicians should be kept out of it’s leadership. They should appoint their leaders from within their group. Trade unions should be fashioned like in other developed countries where the membership’s welfare and training is administered by the union. The unions should also make sure that their membership does not only demand privileges, but also emphasize that they fulfill their obligations.

I am a little concerned about the utterences of our foreign minister in UK hinting of devolution. I hope he does not open a whole new can of worms under pressure from India or the Western Powers. He should remember that our forces and country made great sacrifices during the war to avoid just this business of devolution. The President has a very clear idea about where we are going with the development of the country in the Mahinda Chinthanaya and let us not deviate from this path.

  5. Fran Diaz Says:

Thank you, Mr Charles Perera, for this important article. We also agree with what Siri has said here.
Yes, indeed Patriotism is sadly lacking in Lanka from some quarters, causing disharmony, & danger to everyone. Patriotism should be inculcated in children’s’ minds, at school level onwards. A VERY SHORT OATH should be taken by all children every morning before the days tasks begin. This Oath should be taken in Parliament, by the the armed forces, universities, govt. institutions, and made mandatory for private holdings as well, every morning before the days work begins. Readers, any suggestions what this Oath should say ? May I suggest : “I PROMISE TO BE PATRIOTIC TO AN UNDIVIDED SRI LANKA ALL MY LIFE”, suitably translated into Sinhala & Tamil.

  6. Nimal Says:

We fully agree with Charles.Well written.

  7. Ben_silva Says:

Good article and coments .China was ahead of technology in ancient times and then lagged behind the West. Joseph Needham, an Oxford academic, examined the reason for China to be backward. Needham made accusations against belief systems, which included Confucianism and Taoism (Wikepedia) and Buddhism. So our belief system may also have a hand in our lack of progress. Both China and India, after becoming secular, have made tremendous progress. So this is an area to investigate. My view is: if we want progress, then we need to move mind, body and thinking to the 21st century, rather than living in an era 500 years BC. As for Dictators, many have shown to be disasters. Socialism, good on paper but does not appear to deliver results. However a safety net to protect the weakest is needed.

  8. jayt Says:

My reply: In order to counter conspiracy, Sinhalese first need to know the secret side of the world. Sinhalese will know the secrets of the world and how to counter it only after those of a few Sinhalese who knows little bit about secret world get together and help Sri lanka Military and police to put a foundation for a world number one spy agency in Colombo.
Immediately after, this agency should issue a stern waring to these quarrel-making Sinhalese politicians to behave or good get out! or deport!
Once this problem is gone agency can focus on and counter any foreign threat Sri lanka in cooperation with friendly states in the region or in the world.
