Smt. Sonia Gandhi
President, Indian  National Congress &  Chairperson, United Progressive  Alliance
Member of Lok Sabha for Rae Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh,
24 Akbar Road, New Delhi -110011, India

Dear Smt. Sonia Gandhi:

The news item reported from Chennai on Colombo Page of April 5, which said:  “India says it will continue to press Sri Lanka for Tamil rights” was amazing and contrite coming especially from a member of the prominent Gandhi Dynasty family.  What was equally troublesome was reading the quote from you which said: “We are pressing the Government of Sri Lanka to make changes in the Constitution to ensure equal rights and status to Tamils.”

What!   You must be joking Sonia.   You have certainly demonstrated that streak of the Gandhian Dynastic ugly arrogance and gall to say that the Sri Lankan Tamils need “equal rights and status“, when your  Buddhist Dalits need your help more than the neighboring Tamils.  Don’t you hear the Dalits loud cries wanting equal  rights and status as that of your Hindu Brahmins?   Walk the streets of Chennai, Mumbai, and Delhi and you will see inequality under your very nose of the people that you are trying to govern.  And yet, you are concerned about the Sri Lankan-Tamils.  I smell a nasty rat here! And you ought to know what inequality is all about coming from Orbassano, the town of peasants near Turin.  Ha! What a string of smelly sun baked Indian Holy Cow-patties!

Sonia, you are being dishonest to your own people.  It is time you turn your back on the Sri Lankan-Tamils and focus on your Indian farmers who are prone to commit suicide unable to cope with their economics.  In case you are not aware, more than 17,000 Indian farmers committed suicide in 2009, a 7%  rise on the previous year.  These are according to your government figures.  The states of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andra Pradesh were the worst affected.

Tell your Tamil Nadu Karunanidhi that you have more important things to do rather than crying foul for the Sri Lankan-Tamils who are doing so well. Hook up your sari onto the waist string, never mind exposing a bit of your fair skin, and run to those farmers who need your help.  For crying out loud, lady”¦just Go”¦just Run to those farmers and tell them that you care and not to commit suicide and that you will help!  That your government will help!

Sonia, jump off that dishonest Gandhian arrogant political-wagon as it is heading no where when it tries to show its smarts about good governance in Sri Lanka.  Sonia, the ground reality is that Sri Lanka is doing fine after wiping out your Mother-in-Law’s prodigies, the Tamil Tigers in May 2009, and the Tamils who decided to stay put and live in beautiful Sri Lanka’s North and East are doing fine too, and much better than the Tamils who landed in Canada as refugees who are fighting for their “equal rights and status” as those of the white-Canadians in this foreign “ƒ”¹…”civilized’ land in the west which they now call home. Beggars just can’t be choosers, Sonia!

What is also troublesome is that every time a member of your Gandhi family visits Chennai, the person hallucinates thinking that the island across the Palk Straits Pond belongs to the Gandhies and that you all have leased it to the majority Sinhalese community.  This is wild!  And that the Gandhies feel that you lot have the God given right to interfere in Sri Lanka’s internal affairs to help the Chennai’s  Karunanidhi and Jayalalitha’s Tamil tribe on the far side of the pond  so that they can look and act like the majority population when they are only 3.9% of Sri Lanka’s  22 million people according to World Watch 2009 report.

Indira Gandhi “”…” Your Mother-in-law

This woman was an international bully par excellance.

So, your mother-in-law Indira takes Sri Lanka’s destiny into her hands as if she owned the island,  and takes away thousands of barefooted  Sri Lanka’s Tamil guerilla’s who couldn’t shoot straight in the late-1983 “”…” early-1984, and  have them trained for armed combat in Indian army camps in Tamil Nadu and elsewhere in Uttar Pradesh and by the foothills of the Himalayas, and sent them back after graduating as terrorists having taught them how to fire  AK47s, G3s, SLRs, LMGs, SMGs, No.36 Browning revolvers, Rocket Launchers, 2″ mortars, make explosives, plant landmines, do the monkey crawl and ghosts walks, et cetera.  These Tamil Tiger terrorists came back with funds in their military fatigue pockets, in jack-boots, cradling Kalashnikovs like babies and festoons of live bullets around their necks to fight the Sri Lankan armed forces, to kill two heads of states of which one happened to be her dear son Rajiv, who also happened to be your loving husband, kill politicians and massacre thousands of innocent  unarmed Sinhalese and Muslim civilians,  to claim a patch of land equivalent to one-third of all of the island bordered by 66 percent of the coastline to create their  mono-ethnic, Tamil, racist separate state, Eelam.

In August 1985, the Indian Journal, India 2000, claiming a scoop of the planned invasion of Sri Lanka in August 1983 was confirmed by some sources in India’s Defence and External Affairs Ministries that a top-secret airborne invasion was indeed planned.  And that was your no-good Mother-in-law, a sick joker in my eyes, Sonia.

Sonia Gandhi “”…” Indira Gandhi’s Daughter-in-law

You want to “ensure equal rights and status to Tamils”, you said.   Phew! My dear lady, what the heck are you talking about, Sonia?  You seem to have been hallucinating too when you made that observation.  These Tamils have been enjoying “equal rights” in buckets full for donkeys years to the point that they happened to be the “privileged minority (12.6%)” and the Sinhalese were reduce to being the “wronged majority (74%).” Do I see you surprised by this revelation?  Then here is the story and you better follow my thread.

In 1983, Blacks in the United States made up 12.1% of the population, roughly as the same percentage (12.6%) as the Sri Lankan-Tamils.  Considering your charge of  lack of “equal rights” for Tamils, the American Blacks constituted to be the under-class by any criterion (Washington Post, February 3, 1986), when the 12.6% Sri Lankan-Tamils were enjoying the best of everything in Sri Lanka.   Much, much better than the majority Sinhalese in the rural areas.  And it would be enlightening for you Gandhies to compare the status of American Blacks and Sri Lankan-Tamils that you seem to have a misplaced concern.

The article in the Washington Post  was titled “Blacks on the Bottom”, a litany of discrimination and neglect.   Once you follow my thread it would be so easy to write an article titled, “Sri Lankan-Tamils on the Top”.

Blacks infant mortality, for example, was nearly double that of the Whites.  Black’s life expectancy and median age were below the Whites. So were the numbers of high school graduates and college graduates, 8% and 10% respectively.  In January 1986 Black unemployment was at 14.9% compared to 5.9% for Whites.  Unemployment among Black youth was 2 ½ times that of the Whites.  And the statistics goes on.

So how did the Sri Lankan-Tamils (12.6%) fair?  This is the ethnic group that you seem to be concerned about wanting the Sri Lankan government to change its Constitution to help them to right an unfounded cause.  And now you are being a sick joker yourself like your Mother-in-law.  At the l981 census, and that was two years before the July 83 riots,  believe it or not, unemployment rates were three times higher (25.9%) among the majority Sinhalese than among the Sri Lankan-Tamils (6.7%).  “Hello!” Sonia, are you  still with me following my thread?”

The professional employment is much more revealing that the Tamils have no reason to gripe about, and India’s Sonia Gandhi should mind her own God damn business and go and help her Indian farmers who are prone to commit suicide and the Buddhist Dalits the lowest of the castes who are crying for help wanting to be treated equally as the highest caste Hindu  Brahmins.  I think you should lobby the Indian government to change its Constitution to accommodate the request of  the Dalits, don’t you without expending your energies trying to get Sri Lanka to change her Constitution?

The Sri Lankan census of 1981 says that of the 12.6% Tamils,  35.1% were doctors; dentists 24.7%; veterinary surgeons 38.8%; life scientists 41.5%; medical technicians 30.2%; engineers 34.9%; survey draftsmen 27.8%; top public sector administrators 15.9%.  With these statistics, Sonia Gandhi, you should he ashamed of yourself trying to bully Sri Lanka.  That is a shame! “Bullying” must be factored into the Gandhi clan gene pool as your Mother-in-law Indira was a bully; your husband Rajiv was a bully; your son Rahul is turning out to be a bully; and now you are acting like a “ƒ”¹…”Gandhi-stamped’  bully.  You showed your bully-straits with your statement on Sri Lanka in Chennai.  But all what I will tell you Sonia, is come on, give me a break!   Give all of Sri Lanka a break!  Just vamoose without being a silly, bullying, aggressive nanny-goat!  It certainly doesn’t rhyme with you, hailing from a peasant village near Turin, Italy.

Rajiv Gandhi “”…” Your Husband

Rajiv supported India’s Hegemonistic aspirations. It was in July 1987 that the world witnessed the flagrant high-handedness with which Rajiv’s India attempted to cow-down Sri Lanka by sending Indian Air Force Transport planes, escorted by four screaming Mirage 2000s, to drop a meager 25 tons of so-called “ƒ”¹…”relief’ supplies over Jaffna peninsula,  the famous “ƒ”¹…”Parippu drop’, which had a population of nearly 800,000 Tamils.  This operation was preceded by a farcical naval operation and a virtual orgy of hand-wringing and lamentation by the Indian authorities, led by your dear husband, Rajiv himself, who charged Sri Lanka of deliberate starvation and genocide of Jaffna residence.  Sonia that was a load of Indian-elephant poop!

This move shocked many who believed the 40-year-long Hindu myth of a peaceful neutral giant, underestimated by the west.

On June 16, 1989, your husband as Prime Minister of India made a macho statement saying, “We will not tolerate dictates of any government on how to run our own country”, when he flatly ruled out talks with the US on trading practices.  Surely what is good for the goose should be good for the gander, would you not say so, Sonia?  So President Premadasa of Sri Lanka was not out of synch with your husband, Rajiv, when his dictate to him was “ask your soldiers to pack their bags, dismantle their guns and other armed weapons and ask them to bugger-off from the shores of my Sri Lanka by July 29, 1989.”

Sonia, I am not sure whether you had any interest in your husband’s shenanigans meddling in Sri Lankan politics as you were more a housewife and mother to your two children then, but what did happen true to Rajiv’s bellicose rhetoric was he claimed that without Indian hegemony in South Asia, India’s sovereignty was insecure.  That was the very reason why his mother, your mother-in-law, Indira, fed, housed, trained, armed and paid billions of paisa to the Sri Lankan Tamil terrorists to fight her dirty, blood-soaked, stinking war against Sri Lanka, to destabilize it for hegemony reasons.  With this ill-conceived stroke of stupidity, India radically altered its course of non-aggressiveness and its commitment to the doctrine of “Ahimsa” which it mouthed at every international forum.

That was the very reason that India forced a pact with Sri Lanka, the Indo-Sri Lanka Accord, which was the most infamous contract imposed on a small country since the Munich Agreement of 1938.  This forced “ƒ”¹…”Accord’ was to secure the south of India for Congress (I), even as electoral reverses elsewhere jeopardized Gandhi’s parliamentary majority.  To lose the south was for the Congress (I), to loose power.  The Indian policy towards the Sri Lankan Tamil terrorists was motivated under your mother-in-law Indira Gandhi, was by desire to help her party.  India’s support for the Tamil terrorists in Sri Lanka was to show that Congress (I) was indispensable for Tamil rights and Tamil pride.  It hardly mattered that Tamils in Sri Lanka enjoyed far more linguistic rights than they did in India and were no less prosperous.

The next phase of all these shenanigans was embarrassing for your mighty India and it has gone down in history as a massive  embarrassing disaster for you lot.

The 100,000 Indian troops that occupied Sri Lanka’s north and east was draining $3 million a day from India’s coffers, a country characterized by the gaunt faces of the starving and sick that Mother Theresa cared for.  You Indians arrived in Sri Lanka with a small contingent of troops, around 2000, and were expected to depart after 72 hours having disarmed the “ƒ”¹…”Made in India’ brand of Tamil Tiger terrorists,  But what did the world see of all this?  With 100,000 Indian soldiers, this fourth largest army in the world, who trained the ragged band of bare-footed youth,  were unable to bring them to their knee even after almost two years, but getting their bums whipped and  having to take back 1,200 of their soldiers in body bags.  And not only that Sonia, while I hate to pain  you any more by reminding you,  they also snuffed the life of your dear young husband in 1991 when a woman suicide bomber got him in Tamil Nadu.

And, now you are trying to bully Sri Lanka after all this stupidity from your clan.  Cut it out Sonia.   It is just not worth it.  You have other important things in life, helping those poor, low caste Buddhist Dhalits.  Lift them up.   Give them a break. Give them a life.  Ask Tamil Nadu’s Karunanidhi and Jayalalitha to go and jump in the River Jammu, if they try to pressure you to pressure Sri Lanka about the Tamils.  Because they are a bunch of rogue Tamil politicians.  Believe me, the Tamils are doing fine in Sri Lanka.  They are really doing great or  else they too would have been sailing in rusting, rickety converted fishing trawlers, by passing their motherland, Tamil Nadu, and land on the shores of Canada where I live.

Now to the final  member of the Gandhi clan, Rahul Gandhi, who happens to be your son.

I am sorry to tell his mother “”…” he is turning out to be another Bully, and another fool dabbling in Sri Lankan politics.  It was in December last year that he thought that he was bright eyed and bushy tailed when he told the Sri Lankan government administration, that the Sri Lankan Government was “not doing enough” for the Tamils in Sri Lanka and that he would ensure they get justice.

Sonia, that was a lot of huffing and puffing from your son.  Rein him in and give him a pep talk.  Was he planning to invade Sri Lanka as his grand-mother wanted to do?  Or was he trying to intimidate Sri Lankans again by violating the Sri Lankan airspace by sending more Mirage 2000s, flying them low screaming at President Mahinda Rajapaksa?

If Rahul was expecting Sri Lanka’s President Rajapaksa to shake under his pants  like leaves pushed around by monsoonal winds and run to the corner of his Presidential office and suck on his thumb like a three year old shivering in his boots, then Rahul got it wrong.  All what he is going to hear from the President is “”…” “Piss off you little fellow.  Take care of your Indian people and I will take care of mine.”

The closing pages of this story line Sonia is, to keep your dainty fair hands off Sri Lanka.   Don’t get them bloodied and muddied as a result of your bullying.   What you saw on May 18, 2009 was, your Mother-in-law’s prodigies, the “ƒ”¹…”Made in India’ Tamil Tigers that the fourth biggest army in the world couldn’t bring them down to their knees, being whipped and wiped  out militarily by the Sri Lankan armed forces after they hemorrhaged  that beautiful island for 27 long years, thanks to Indira Gandhi.  And I hope this says something to you

You bet, Sri Lankans will stand up to you Gandhies in the future and uphold their ancient heritage with dignity.

  1. De Costa Says:

Thank you very much for sending this to this woman. All you said is true.
Indians are now promoting Hindi as “The Indian Language” all over the world. No protests from Tamils.

  2. Kit Athul Says:

Thank you Asoka, please go to Infolanka web site and read the Challenge Minister Ranwake gave Sonia in the Parliament. It was there yesterday. You might have to go back few pages.

  3. Susantha Wijesinghe Says:

How come this peasant woman Sonia from Turin, Italy, in Ghandian cloak, acquire the courage to request the Sri Lankan Government, to change its constitution, when there is so much of stinking misery in Tamil Nadu and India, where a change in their constitution is mandatory. The younger generation of the Ghandian Dynasty is seething with arrogance and blatant apathy. Mahathma Ghandi would have never envisaged his siblings to take to a path of desecrating the simple principles he laid down, for good demeanor and compassionate conduct, in life.

Sonia, should with great deference, accept Asokas Road Map to plot your future in Tamil Nadu and India. Just dont leave room for our President to ask you and your little fellow to PISS OFF and take care of your Indian People, and that the Sri Lankan President will look after the SRI LANKANS, be they be, Sinhalese, Muslims, Tamils, Malays, or Burghers, as they are mine.

Sonia ! Please do not be submissive to the Tamil Nadu JOKERS.

Sonia, You do not appear to have the knowledge on your own to devise a proper Road Map for Indias Future. Hence, it has made you to join a clan with a few perverse, sadistic politicians, who wish to project themselves as Interlopers into other peoples businesses. This is tyipically drawing a Red Herring across the trail. Tamil Nadu Politicians have always swept their dirt under the carpet, and looking for shortfalls across the pond, for a tom tom beat.

Tamil Nadu Politicians are constantly wailing, on matters they cannot control, nor has a solution. They have not come out with a single idea ever, to upgrade the quality of human life. They are always pointing out shortfalls, and they keep huffing and puffing. But where are their solutions and answers ? NONE. So now they have listed SONIA, hoping that she will make the Hossannas fall from heaven.

SONIA ! Your new mind set may be due to consuming, excessive portions of Vadai, Thosai, hut dhal, brinjarl, sarmbarl, thats arl. Get back to Italian sausage, sphagetti, and the famous Italian fruit bowl, which will endow you with that beautiful Italian frame of mind. Nevertheless, STOP MESSING with Sri Lanka.

  4. Ben_silva Says:

Well said Asoka. We have to be fully aware of Indian threats and dangers to us due to Indan expansion. Indians could cause instability using various excuses. Unless we are fully prepared to fight back, we could be in trouble. The main danger is that Indian politicians could be manipulated by Tamils. I have nothing against ordinary Indians who are generally friendly. The population and power of India is also increasing, which is a serious threat to us.

  5. ranjit Says:

Very interesting If we want to live happily ever after then we should not go behind this big bully India. We should act strongly against their behaviour like Champika did in parliament. Our leaders should not give in to each and every request of theirs so easily. They are not our true friends at all. Their politicians are very dirty, shrewed, corrupt, criminal minded individuals. Ours is the only country in the world maybe who take care of the citizens irrespective of race, color or religion humanly without treating differently. Sonia should visit our Motherland and see for herself how the Tamils living in our country and how we Sinhalese treat them. The Indians are jealous now and they might be planning to destroy our freedom and unity therefore we need to be vigilant as ever.

Sonia should learn a lesson from the past. She lost her husband because of her mother in law’s stupidity. In our country 99% dont like India and most of the articles in news is warning our leaders to be careful of the Indians. They are not genuine friends like China and Pakistan. They talk as if our country is another province of theirs. Millions without basics and they want us to listen to them. Go to hell Indians.

  6. jimmy Says:

Politicians in India will say anything to win seats . After elections they will not remember anything

Looks like elections in T Nadu is coming soon and These clowns will say anything to get seats

Srilankan issue will and can be resolved by Srilanka and by Srilankans only in a peaceful and amicable way not by Indians or any other countries

  7. ranjit Says:

Sonia talk on behalf of Tamils or not because of the elections she is on their list so better take care of yourself. Indian politicians wants power by hook or crook so we shouldnt bother much about it. Lets ignore those stupid comments from the other side of the river.

  8. Sri Rohana Says:

No doubt Sonia must grateful to tamils. If not LTTE Velupillai and Karunanidhi’s joint operation that killed Rajiv Gandhi Sonia is still in the kitchen making Nann roti and dhal curry. Hopefully her luck Velupillai killed her husband then she became the congress party leader. If she is really grateful to tamils she must allow Karunanidhi to declare tamil nadu as an independent country. Tamils don’t want them rule by New Delhi rulers and DMK party formed in 1944 for an independent tamil country
Sonia became congress leader not on her talents but the inferior complex of Indians as they scared and worship to Europeans by nature. Can’t Indian idiots find an Indian man or woman out of one billion to lead their country and it’s shame to have an European as a leader. “In future Italian historians may tell that Italian queen ruled India for several decades after Queen Elizabeth of England”.
Before she interfere Sri Lanka’s internal matters she should amend her constitution and allow self determination to Kashmir, Kalistan, Nagaland, Sikkim, Assam, Tripura and tamil nadu. Has to recognize Naxalite movement to share power.
To create a problem in Sri Lanka her mother in law and her husband trained several thousand terrorists. So we consider both as war criminals. If she thinks that tamils are not happy in Sri Lanka why don’t she allow them to come to their traditional homeland tamil nadu (tamil country). So that tamils can enjoy every right they want. (Even tamil nadu born Velupillai Prabakaran’s father refused to go back to his birthplace tamil nadu).
Entire world know why tamils rather than going to tamil nadu go to Canada, Australia, Germany, France, U.K and U.S.A as a political refugees. Can’t she understand this is purely an economic agenda of tamils. This is not a political matter but a dowry matter.
If she doesn’t have any thing to do I recommend her to watch academy awarded film “slum dog millioner”

  9. Nalliah Thayabharan Says:

Edvige Antonia Albina Maino was born December 09, 1946 to Stefano and Paola Maino in contrada Màini (“Maini street”) in Lusiana, a little village 30 km from Vicenza in the region of Veneto, Italy. She spent her adolescence in Orbassano, a town near Turin, attending a Catholic school. Her father, a building contractor, died in 1983. Her mother and two sisters still live around Orbassano. In 1964, she went to study English at the Bell Educational Trust’s language school in the city of Cambridge. She met Rajiv Gandhi, who was enrolled in Trinity College at the University of Cambridge in 1965 at a Greek restaurant while working there, as a waitress to make ends meet. In all three years of Rajiv Gandhi’s tenure at Trinity College had not passed a single examination. Sonia and Rajiv Gandhi married in 1968.

Antonia Maino was given the name ‘Sonia’ by her late mother-in-law, Indira Gandhi. But there is no notification in the gazette regarding this change in name. This change of name runs in Nehru family is to fool the Indian public for their votes. Indira Gandhi’s real name was Indira Priyadarshini. In 1934–35, after finishing school, Indira joined Shantiniketan,a school set up by Rabindranath Tagore. Subsequently, she went to England and sat for the University of Oxford entrance examination, but she failed, and spent a few months at Badminton School in Bristol, before passing the exam in 1937 and enrolling at Somerville College, Oxford where she never finished her degree. Khushwant Singh, who has personally known Indira Gandhi, has said that she felt uncomfortable around educated people because she had no real education. During her stay in the UK, she frequently met Feroze Gandhi, whom she knew from Allahabad, and who was studying at the London School of Economics. Feroze Khan was quite sympathetic to Indira and Indira married Feroze Khan in a London mosque as per Islamic rites Feroz Khan after converting herself to Islam. Indira’s muslim name was Maimuna Begum and later both had changed their name to fool the public of India by an affidavit in a court to Indira Gandhi and Feroz Gandhi.

The second son of Indira known as Sanjay Gandhi was not the son of Feroze Khan. Sanjay’s real father was Mohammad Yunus. Baby Sanjay had been circumcised following Islamic custom, although the reason stated was phimosis. Sanjay was notorious in getting unwed young women pregnant. Menaka too was rendered pregnant by Sanjay. It was then that her father, Colonel Anand, threatened Sanjay with dire consequences if he did not marry her daughter. And that did the trick. Sanjay married Menaka. It was widely reported in Delhi at the time that Mohammad Yunus was unhappy at the marriage of Sanjay with Menaka; apparently he had wanted to get him married with a Muslim girl of his choice.

Mohammad Yunus who cried the most when Sanjay died in the plane accident. Sanjay used to blackmail Indira and due to this she used to turn a blind eye when Sanjay started to run the country as though it were his personal fiefdom. When the news of Sanjay’s death reached Indira, the first thing she wanted to know was about the bunch of keys which Sanjay had with him.
Rajiv Gandhi changed his so called Parsi religion to become a Catholic to marry Edvige Antonia Albina Maino. Rajiv became Roberto. His daughter’s name is Bianca and son’s name is Raul. Quite cleverly the same names are presented to the people of India as Priyanka and Rahul. What is amazing is the extent of Indians’ ignorance in such matters. The press conference that Rajiv Gandhi gave in London after taking over as prime minister of India was very informative. In this press conference, Rajiv boasted that he was NOT a Hindu but a Parsi. Mind you, speaking of the Parsi religion, he had no Parsi ancestor at all. His grandmother (father’s mother) had turned Muslim after having abandoned the Parsi religion to marry Nawab Khan.

In 1980 Sonia’s name appeared in the voter’s list for New Delhi prior to her becoming an Indian Citizen. At the time she was still holding Italian Citizenship. A violation of Form 4 of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, which states that “Only the names of those who are citizens of India should be entered on the electoral rolls.” When she did acquire Indian Citizenship, in April 1983, the same issue cropped up again, as her name appeared on the 1983 voter’s list when the deadline for registering had been in January 1983.

Rajiv Gandhi had been singularly lacking in intellectual attainments, and his interventions in Parliamentary debates were notoriously prosaic and dull.

Rajiv Gandhi began to a show keen interest in evolving an acceptable political package to bring an end to the ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka to deflect attention from domestic issues. Rajiv Gandhi had been at the center of a heated political controversy since March, 1987. It all started with Assembly elections in Kerala, West Bengal and Jammu & Kashmir. In Kerala on March 23, 1987, the Congress-led coalition government was driven out of power by the leftist front, meaning that the opposition regional parties had now taken control of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. At the same time, Congress, under the leadership of Rajiv Gandhi, miserably failed to wrest power back from the communists in West Bengal, while Congress did manage to retain its hold in Jammu and Kashmir as junior partners.

At this time, Finance Minister V.P.Singh was transferred to the Ministry of Defense by Rajiv Gandhi.

In early part of March 1997 the intelligence branch of the federal government raided the offices of the Indian Express newspaper. During the raid, the government stumbled on information that the Ministry of Finance had employed the services of a US consulting firm, the Fairfax Group, to investigate illegal offshore transactions of such distinguished business luminaries as the Bachchan brothers and textile magnate Dirrubhai Ambani.

V.P.Singh admitted that the investigation had been undertaken under his authority, which prompted the Congress leaders and a section of the media to accuse him of selling national interests to foreign operatives closely linked with CIA of America. Never mind that the investigation was aimed at alleged economic crimes, and had nothing to do with security issues. Rajiv Gandhi tried to play down the seriousness of the issue by making it a subject of a closed-door examination.

But the public impression lingered that, something fishy was going on. This impression was reinforced by V P Singh in his role as minister of defense. It was alleged that kickbacks, as much as 7%, had been solicited by Indian middlemen, on a US$340 million submarine order, placed with a West German shipyard during Indira Gandhi’s rule. Such commissions were banned under Indian law, and there was speculation that the alleged payments had been a kickback to the Congress ruling party.

V.P.Singh ordered a fresh departmental probe into the scandal, when he took over the Defense portfolio. He did not notify either Rajiv Gandhi or the cabinet, which is customary procedure on launching such a probe. He only announced the investigation on the floor of parliament – the Lok Sabah – on April 9, 1987.

Congress party leaders were quick to accuse the defense minister of a cheap publicity stunt, bent on grabbing media publicity without regard to cabinet or party procedures. On April 12, V.P.Singh resigned as defense minister over charges that, he had intended to malign and embarrass Rajiv Gandhi. V.P.Singh went as far as to proclaim his loyalty to Gandhi and to the party, when he announced his resignation.

No sooner had the kickback scandal arisen than, Swedish radio broadcasters reported that Stockholm’s premier arms maker, BOFORS, had paid a $16 million commission into Swiss bank accounts of Indian middlemen to secure a $1.3 billion order for 400 howitzers.

The allegation involving BOFORS targeted for investigation both Ajitab Bachchan and his brother Amitab Bachchan, a Congress member of parliament from the Alahabad constituency, in Uttar Pradesh. Rajiv Gandhi and Amitab Bachchan were childhood friends. The arms deal was consummated while Rajiv Gandhi had been Minister of Defense. He left the post to replace Singh as Minister of Finance.

The governments of India and Sweden, and also BOFORS, rushed to deny the allegations, claiming that the howitzer deal had been concluded from direct negotiations, between Rajiv Gandhi and the late premier of Sweden, Olaf Palme, during the latter’s state visit to India in 1985.

Rajiv Gandhi’s political vulnerability became increasingly apparent and rumors were rife of an impending “constitutional coup” to be staged by Giani Zail Singh, the president of India. Giani Zail Singh, an Indira Gandhi loyalist, was about to complete his five-year term as president. He felt that a second term would not be forthcoming and he felt snubbed by Rajiv Gandhi, who neglected him on issues of government.

Beginning in April 1987, newspapers reported that Giani Zail Singh was quietly seeking advice on his constitutional power to remove the prime minister. The president was said to be waiting for possible evidence that, Rajiv Gandhi himself had been involved in the graft scandal.

On May 1, 1987 Rajiv Gandhi lashed out at unidentified opponents, whom, he said, wanted to stage a coup against the democratically elected government. The prime minister added that even the highest elected officials could be held answerable to parliament. Following the outburst of a veiled threat on the president, Giani Zail Singh’s public repudiation of the idea of removing Rajiv Gandhi was reported in the national press on May 5, 1987. The opposition were reluctant to entertain the idea of having a democratically elected prime minister dismissed. In one statement, leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said that such an action by the president was “too dangerous a proposition for the future democracy and the country”.

While Rajiv Gandhi struggled with corruption scandals and open hostility to his country’s president, the ruling Congress party was handed an overwhelming defeat in the state assembly election held on June 18, 1987 in Haryana. The defeat was the party’s 6th loss in the past 7 elections that, it had contested under the leadership of Rajiv Gandhi.

On July 13, 1987 Ramaswami Venkataraman was elected as the eighth president of India. Venkataraman, a senior Congress party leader from Tamil Nadu, South India, had served for 4 years under Indira Gandhi, both as Minister of Finance and later as Minister of Defense and had become vice president of India in 1984.

Venkataraman was Rajiv Gandhi’s nominee for the mostly ceremonial post of president, and his chief opponent was V R Krishna Iyer, a retired Supreme Court Judge, who was supported by a collection of opposition parties.

Balloting for the presidency was confined to members of the national parliament and state assemblies. Venkataraman brought a breath of fresh air to Rajiv Gandhi and to the Congress party, by garnering about 71% of the votes.

Emboldened by this result, Rajiv Gandhi began to purge leading dissidents in the Congress party. On July 15, 1987 he expelled party leaders Arin Mohammad Khan, V C Shukla and Arun Nehru. Again, on July 19, 1987 he expelled V.P.Singh. Infighting within Congress was not the single issue that confronted Rajiv Gandhi. The Punjab problem, Sikhs uprising for the formation of a separate state, coupled with problems in Nagaland and Mizoram became major issues.

So, for distraction, Rajiv Gandhi latched on to Sri Lanka to divert attention from his mounting domestic problems, with the airdrop of supplies on June 4, 1987 into Jaffna, being a turning point in the Indo-Sri Lankan relationship.

Swiss magazine Schweitzer Illustrierte in 1991 claimed that Sonia was controlling accounts worth $2 billion dollars in her son Raul’s name.

Harvard scholar Yevgenia Albats cited KGB correspondence about payments to Rajiv Gandhi and his family, which had been arranged by Viktor Chebrikov, which shows that KGB chief Viktor Chebrikov sought in writing an “authorization to make payments in U.S. dollars to the family members of Rajiv Gandhi, namely Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Paola Maino, mother of Sonia Gandhi” from the CPSU in December 1985.

Payments were authorized by a resolution, CPSU/CC/No 11228/3 dated 20 December 1985; and endorsed by the USSR Council of Ministers in Directive No 2633/Rs dated 20 December 1985. These payments had been coming since 1971, as payments received by Sonia Gandhi’s family and “have been audited in CPSU/CC resolution No 11187/22 OP dated 10/12/1984.

In 1992 the media confronted the Russian government with the Albats disclosure. The Russian government confirmed the veracity of the disclosure and defended it as necessary for “Soviet ideological interest.”

In 2008 Sonia’s party appointed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Manmohan Singh was the only international leader to initially refuse data provided by the German authorities during 2008 Liechtenstein tax affair.

Sonia wrote in Indian Parliament’s Who’s who: she has an English diploma from Cambridge University. Cambridge University refuted Antonia Maino’s claim being a student at any time. Later, Sonia’s champchas told in the Indian Parliament, it was a typographic error. And poor Rajiv Gandhi fall into a trap for an uneducated waitress, which costs his life later (with Bofors scandal, Sonia’s boyfriend Ottavio Quattrochi who gave Anton Balasingam several millions in Paris to request Velupillai Prabaharan to kill Rajiv Gandhi).

As Mr. Asoka Weerasinghe says & supported by Sri Rohana, I am pleased to learn moreabout the so called Indian Congress Party president.

I never knew what I know now, by reading Asoka’s article & responses to it. When we in high school in Sri lanka, we were taught that Indians coming to Sri lanka in search of jobs, lie in their resumes & when hired by illegal means, they turn out to be worst citizens, milking Sri lanka & sending money to India.

These people have no morals, or proper education, dicipline, that is why Indians are hated by every country they set feet in. If the so called President of Congress Party lied why can’t the ordinary citizens of India. As one of the responsees said India has no basic minimum facilities in most cities & one article in this paper said that over 53% of Indian population has no toilet facilties.

Is it any wonder why they say India smells. Whatever they have achieved in Nuclear advancement, export of Indian build products sent to neighbours are most inferior in quality.

We always imported equipment from the west even at a higher cost, because products from west are superior in quality. I am very pleased to learn so many things about Indian politicians from Asoka’s article which in turn educated us.

It is time our ploiticians to say, what Canada said many years ago to USA, keep your hands off Canada, we have free health care, we have NO expansionist policies of invading other countries. It is NOW we must stand together forgettiing our differences & fight to preserve our hardly won peace with much sacrfice.

Ask Sonia to mind the pathetic Indian pronlems & its people, rather than interferring in governance of other countries, specially her neighbours.
Thanks you Asoka, I always enjoy reading & learning from another Sri lankan who is not affraid of speaking the truth on behalf of our Motherland……..Expressing my views… again as an expat from Canada……~ Gamunu retd: Engineer
