ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Angelo Mathews needs to stand up to his critics with the bat and ball and all the defiance he can muster if he is to silence his critics. Criticism has come primarily from the Chief Selector Asanka de Mel. Mathews a rated all rounder in the Sri Lanka Squad has now been offered the captaincy in the opener (T-20) of the forthcoming series against New Zealand and its about time he delivered as its been a long time coming and those who know his performance capabilities believe it will happen soon and seems opportune for him to blaze a trail of glory!

In positive perspective however the criticiusm just might spurr him on towards a scintillating perfornamce against the Kiwis it is hoped where the negativities of the de Mel criticism needs to be buried!

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The criticism which seems a bit harsh is however not surprising given Mathews’ poor showing of late and should be taken objectively as it seems constructive enough as he prepares to lead the side against New Zealand in a one-off Twenty20 next Tuesday and perhaps some other games to follow, being primed as a replacement to Mahela Jayawardena.

Sadly it might have been a darnsight classier had the Chief Selector addressed Mathews privately rather than make it public as the psyche of it seems all wrong this close to the New Zealand Series then again if the desired effect is positive it could still be fortuitous for Sri Lanka Cricket and Matthews could be magnanimous about the Chief Selector’s Faux Pas and not overreact to it.

While the Chief Selector de Mel’s assertion that Mathews’ poor performance was the main contributing factor to Sri Lanka’s defeat by 36 runs, despite chasing a modest 137 it seems somewhat contentious and it doesn’t seem fair to blame Matthews for the loss as Sri Lanka’s top order who failed to fire and it was a poor team effort with a few glaring errors! It was a game squandered to put it mildly!

Furthermore de Mel’s choice of the final elevn seemed questionable too where some key players overlooked could have made a difference to the outcome, the Lasith Malinga 53 run HANDOUT notwithstanding which responsibility lies with Mahela Jayawardena’s choice to persist in bowling him to the end and perhaps a better reason why Sri Lanka lost! but all water under the bridge now.

Despite the scope of this item I personally do not believe Matthews is captaincy material. In fact it could furthere debilitate his performance capabilities.Bring in Thilan Samaraweers for whatever time he has left and play him in all formats of the game. The Selectors are doing a gross injustice in excluding him and prime someone younger to assist him.Someone who has leadership qualities as well as performance capabilities.
