1962 Coup and the 2012 Coup by “Black Coat sharks”

The era after 1956 was a period of transition. Therefore, someƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ at the top whoƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ were disgruntledƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ by the pro-national reformation attempted to overthrow the govt of Sirimavo in 1962. Till 1956, only two-fifth of army officers were Sinhala Buddhists. But nearlyƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ 75 per cent of the people in the country wereƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Buddhists. After 1956, this proportion of officersƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ graduallyƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ changed which was not to the liking of some who were in the forces. As usual they wanted the forces to be dominated by non-Buddhists.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The 1962 coup makers were from the so called ‘super class’, and fromƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ distinguished wealthy families who despised the pro-nationalƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ policies of theƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ govt. Further, the top public servants from this group were reluctant to learn Sinhala, as they came from the english educated elite class. The coup staged by themƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ended in disaster.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
Sixty years later, some disgruntled groups have teamed together to preserve their privileges, status, wealthƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ etc to manipulate a regime change. This is backed and funded by the international community andƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ some interested groups. The ‘Coup’ in 2012 is led by the ‘Black coats’ as they consider that their ‘citadel’ had been tresspassed by the govt making a dent on their wealth. With the impeachment of the Chief Justice they have now taken to the streets. As the hue and cry is mostly in Colombo I inquired from myƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ friends in the rural areas what they thought about the impeachment. Their simple question was , why shouldƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ someone have 20 bank accounts, especially when the persons husband is allegedlyƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ involved in a 350 million rupee deal. None of the people I spoke to had a bank account . But they smiled and said that, they have a vote which they declaredƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ willƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ neverƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ go to the supporters ofƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ‘Black coat sharks”.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
Incidentally, it isƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ amusing to noteƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ photographs showing ‘Black coats’ clustering to beƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ with the CJ in some papers. They areƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ flogging a dead horse when Article 107 of the Constitution says, “Every such Judge shall hold office duringƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ good behaviour, and shall not be removed except by an order of the President made after an address of Parliament, supported by a majority of the total number of members of Parliament has been presented to the President for such removal on the grounds of misbehaviour or incapacity …”

I think the FAILED coup has done good for the country.
After that brown sahibs, South Indians and Europeans started leaving the armed forces. Allowing Sinhalese to take over and build the WORLD’S BEST ARMED FORCES.
I would have handled it differently using low cost methods!! :))
And say they were casualties of infighting within the coup group.

The ghosts of 1962 (or rather their LEFTOVERS) are back to haunt us.
I dare say the ghosts (or leftovers) of 2009 will come to haunt us before 50 years.
MISPLACED kindness!!

High Treason seems to be a genetic defect of this family.

Though the ordinary citizens have the Vote, they must safeguard both the Vote & the Democratic institutions of the country. Do NOT allow voting MACHINES to be used during any election. Voting machines can be rigged as was found in the west. A prominent politician in the Opposition suggested that voting machines should be used in Sri Lanka too ! – so please be aware
of various machinations against the country and its people.
The Media publications must be constantly checked for accuracy. What has happened in some western democracies where big money has taken over media to publish inaccurate articles to mislead the public, must not happen in Sri Lanka. For a Democracy to operate properly, people must have accurate information and their participation in the process of Democracy is required. Their opinions consulted and solutions to problems considered by those in power. Merely voting is not enough.
Freedom is not free !
