What Does Maithripala Sirisena And His Opposition Alliance Have To Offer Sri Lanka That The President And His Team Cannot?  Nothing, In A Worthless Quest For Power!

If one digs deep into the track record of Maithripala Sirisena common opposition candidate it will becone very apparent that the man has little or nothing to offer Sri Lanka that the President has not already provided where he is simply a pawn of  the power hungry likes of dead beats Ranil Wickremasinghe, Chandrika Kumaratunga, the top brass Buddhist Priests who should have reservations about involving themselves in politics who fancy their political influences as those which could overrun the present Administration which is simply wishful thinking.

In Sri Lanka today it is almost an idiosyncracy that disgruntled politicians often tend to take advantage of minor aberrations of the ruling party, blow them out of proportion and distort the situation in the country hoping to influence a gullible audience which is exactly what the Sirisena, Wickremasinghe, Kumaratunga alliance is attempting to do in Sri Lanka in the run off to the next Presidential Elections but they in all probabilities are in for a rude shock that their tactics will not convince the grerater percentage of the voting public who are not only aware of what’s going on but  are also totally grateful for what the Rajapaksa Administration has done for the country for all the time it has been in power.

Therefore it seems a fair assumption that all the adversaries of the Administration of  Sri Lanka who in the past have failed miserably to provide what was beneficial for the nation ar very unlikely to be in a capacity to do so now as all they seem to see is an assumed opportunity to topple the present Government but the question is with what as an alternative to what the Government has provided for towards a better nation in post insurgent Sri Lanka beyond loose rhetoric on the part of those who seek to unseat the President which truly is a vain and worthless effort!

It seems beyond speculation that  all these opponent of the present Administration  will be provided with the appropriate answer to the most lingering question many ask ” what do they have to justify their quest to unseat the present President  in a political and economic climate that has been praised and acolladed globally. Little or nothing beyond false promises! Sri Lanka in the meantime continues to make great inroads into the process of nation building and is recognised for the related accomplishments contrary to all the false propaganda and innuendo being presented as part of the political mudslinging campaign of the supporters of the common candidate including himself who shamelessly continues his efforts to discredit the Administration which gave him much recognition and status which he has chosen to spit on and reject in his selfish quest for power. So is this the kind of leader Sri Lanka can trust in? Hardly!

Therefore when President Mahinda Rajapaksa scores a resounding victory at the forthcoming election the hopefuls who sought to unseat him are bound to be quite unpleasantly surprised as it will be the will of the common man who will not be swayed by the false portrayals of the Administration as unworthy, that will sweep the President back into power as he has already created his legacy as one of Sri Lanka’s finest leaders with great patriotic intent and acclaimed by the more discerning world political leaders towards its veracity !

If one were to view astutely and with true perception the alliance that has set its sights towards replacing the present Administration   there can only be a single impression in the eyes of the beholders of a group of individuals who have banded themselves in an opportunistic sense to acheive what some of them failed to do for decades having been rejected by the will of the people in the past and in this sense some who were once projected to power by the will of the people now attempting to ursurp their much loved patriotic leader would  in every likelihood be swept away in a wave of resentment and rejection through the people’s mandate bearing in mind that no leader in the history of Sri Lanka has accomplished what the present President has and restored the Nation into one of dignity, prosperity and great hope towards posterity of future generations.
It is indeed a worthless quest for power by the opposition!

  1. Lorenzo Says:

Yes they have things to offer.

e.g. LESS nepotism, more clamp down on drugs and tobacco, removing EP

Even during the election time they offer MORE to the people than the govt. MASSIVE amounts of STATE FUNDS are wasted to put up cut outs, posters. FAR TOO MANY. Like Tamil Madu.

My3 had said he will rather use money for posters on CKDu sufferers.

Deposit of money for MR was made at the election office. Look at the faces of ministers who went there. Their SAD faces say it all.

  2. Daya Says:

This sort of panegyric does not really serve the needs of the time, or even of the SLFP. Far more constructive was the attitude of Lands Minister, Janaka Bandara Tennekoon when he cried for the party which he said he would never leave. It would be much more constructive if, during the five weeks left for campaigning, the Party founded by SWRDB were to self-examine, confess those of its faults that can credibly be corrected, and then face the people.

Lorenzo is right in most of his observations. May I add that we can hardly claim the likes of the Mauritanian President to be a “discerning” world leader; why hasn’t the author of this piece, Sunil Kumar checked on the sort of country that is, or Uganda, or Saudi Arabia where poor Rizana was beheaded.

Why was this election advanced by two years? That in itself was unfair – for the government to select a time that was propitious to themselves. I know that politics will never be like a game of cricket with all forms of chivalry being observed. But come to think of it, it is we who ought to refuse to accept blatant interference with the judiciary etc. Actually making fewer headlines are the kickbacks and commissions that few of us are aware of, but which are reflected in the extravagant life styles of the children of our leaders. Yes, even Maithripala’s son was involved in something shameful in Pasikudah a little less than two years ago. Well, Maithri didn’t try to protect the boy, and that surely is a significant difference.

The way forward is to correct what is wrong in the Rajapaksa administration. Many of us haven’t decided this early which way we will vote, or whether we will perhaps give only a second preference vote to one of the main contenders. We are the floating voters; come persuade us to vote for MR; I just may.

  3. Susantha Wijesinghe Says:

RANIL MUNASINGHE, is waiting like a fox to eat the carcass left over by My3pala wijesena. My3 still has not got the kill, but Munasinghe is salivating for his portion. Monica Kumaranatunga is seen like a foxen with Sam Pan Dung planning how to drink some Sinhala blood, to quench their thirst. This has become a jungle for predators. I believe the roaring MahindaRaja Lion will tare them up.

  4. NeelaMahaYoda Says:

    Lorenzo

MOU has not proposed any solid plan for combatting Corruption, Nepotism and cronyism. They are proposing to combat these social menace merely by introducing transparent and responsible procedures. (විනිවිදභාවයකින් යුත් වගවීමේ ක්රමවේදයක්) This is the same old song they have been playing since independence.

Mahinda should appreciate the fact that these are the real problems that has run rampant both in politics and in the state structures that provide basic services to ordinary people. and introduce some solid proposals to combat them.

President Obama has recently called the fight against corruption “one of the great struggles of our time.” The costs of corruption in the US are immeasurable – injustice, misallocation of resources, economic decay. Corruption affects a staggering number of livelihoods and lives and erodes the faith of citizens in their governments and in the rule of law. The United States views corruption as a growing threat to the national security of their country and allies around the world.
For years, the United States has led the fight against international bribery. In 1977, it passed the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, domestic legislation which prohibits Americans and other persons and businesses that fall under the jurisdiction of the law from bribing foreign officials in order to obtain or retain business. To level the playing field, the United States sought to create a “race to the top” by encouraging other OECD countries to criminalize such bribery. The Anti-Bribery Convention was signed in 1997 and took effect in 1999, becoming what Transparency International calls “the gold standard” in the fight against corruption.

Conflict of interest is a situation in which a public official has a private or other interest which is such as to influence, or appear to influence, the impartial and objective performance of his or her official duties.

Therefore, only one way of tackling the issue of conflict of interest is to actually prohibit (prevent) certain conflicts of interest. Regulation should be designed not only to impose obligations on public officials, but also to help them to resist improper approaches, and more generally to contribute to the development of a public service culture.

Mahinda should take a cue from these statements and act wisely to gain confidence of the people.

    1. Corruption – Sri Lanka needs a solid legal framework to fight the corruption that has run rampant both in politics and in the state structures. Some legislation similar to US criminal conflict of interest statute, 18 U.S.C. § 208

    2. Nepotism and cronyism – introduction of independent public audit of local and government authorities, and a strong national code of conduct. Engrain criminal conflict of interest in the law.

    3. Abolition of executive presidency – Appoint multi-party constitutional commission consisting of constitutional experts to redraft a new constitution abolishing EP.

Fewer safeguards means an increased corruption risk in the government. The present bribery and corruption commission is no use. The legal system should be capable of handling and prosecuting these criminals like in US.

  5. Independent Says:

    NMY,

I don’t like comparison with Obama and USA which is foreign to our culture but I agree with your proposals. I suppose you agree that these three has ruined our President’s credibility greatly. Otherwise , he could have been one of greatest leaders of the history.
But only a few will join politics, then. It is better to increase politicians salaries 10 fold – it is still cheaper.

  6. Vimutti Says:

Lorenzo – the article hits the nail on the head. The COMMON Sri Lankan voter is not swayed by issues like curbing presidential power or ousting family members from government who have been very effective as ministers.

The basic problem is Maithripala does not have a proven record that would EARN him the presidency, kind of like the Harvard health award problem. Maithripala has not decreased cigarette smoking or alcoholism – his signature issues – in Sri Lanka. He has also not reduced cancer, heart disease, diabetes, respiratory disease or HIV. Yet we are supposed to believe according to Harvard that this undistinguished record in Sri Lanka as health minister makes him the best leader in the world on the topic of health. What a complete JOKE!

And can you imagine if you extend this ‘unearned accolades’ into other areas vital to being an effective president in Sri Lanka. For example, Maithripala has no record at all in developmental economics yet we are supposed to believe he could build on MR’s extraordinary economic growth that has made Sri Lanka the “miracle of Asia”. Maithripala has no record of achievement in counter-insurgency and anti-terrorism policy, yet we are supposed to believe that he is more qualified than MR in keeping terrorism from re-emerging again. In fact, on this point we have indications that Maithripala from his recent talk at New Town Hall that has the TNA praising Maithripala that he will FULLY implement the 13th Amendment by following all of the LLRC recommendations, and giving away land and police powers to a devolved North and East, and at this point in time such stupidity would certainly create a high risk of terrorism reemerging.

We are supposed to believe that Maithripala’s lack of record and achievement in international relations and diplomacy makes him more qualified than MR, and that he will not reset relations with China as he has promissed and as desired by the US and UK who are supporting his candidacy, even though China is the ONLY country in the world that is putting up the multi-billion dollars needed to bring Sri Lanka into the modern era. Yes, these are mainly loans for expressways, dams, and bridges, but all of these expressways have tolls that generate revenue, making these loans relatively secure as traffic always increases year by year, and dams produce electricity which is also a revenue source. China is also the sole financial backer of the planned Colombo Port City development, the largest development of its kind in the world. How many SRI LANKANS are employed by such Chinese funded developments, and what kind of work would they be doing without these projects if Maithripala resets the relationship with China as he has promised?

And we are supposed to believe because of Maithripala’s ‘farmer roots’ that he is capable of lifting the poor in Sri Lanka out of poverty. Yet his record does not support this conclusion, in that he has not lifted a single person out of poverty during his entire time in government. MR, on the other hand, has earned international distinction for his anti-poverty programs (Google: “Kudos for Sri Lanka’s anti-poverty programme”), which includes self-sufficiency in rice, cowpea, sorghum and other food products, improvements to the fishing industry, increasing supply of electricity to rural areas, and improving primary and secondary education.

Yes, compared to MR, MS is an empty sarong – having no record achievement in any area of government that would suggest he would be a better president than our current one.

  7. Lorenzo Says:

    NMY,

“MOU has not proposed any solid plan for combatting Corruption, Nepotism and cronyism.”

Yes. I got the same idea. For that matter the MOU LACKS DEPTH IN EVERYTHING!

I have GIVEN UP on corruption. It will NOT be reduced significantly in the foreseeable future. That is why I DELIBERATELY left it out in my examples.

e.g. LESS nepotism, more clamp down on drugs and tobacco, removing EP

But LESS nepotism will lead to more transparency and hence less corruption.
Obviously the MS family will NOT control 56% of the budget. So it is still better.
Removing EP will also save BILLIONS.

My biggest hope is WHEN the parliament is empowerd over EP, 13 amendment can be scrapped eventually. That will SHUT THE DOOR for SUPER MASSIVE corruption.

These INDIRECT moves can reduce corruption than taking it head on.

I’m also impressed with the EXAMPLE set by MS. UNP, etc. camp has enough money to beat MR in the cut out game. But MS insists he will keep it to a minimum. BILLIONS of state funds are wasted in these dirty campaigns. There is a viral video a ROADS DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY worker pasting MR’s posters.

  8. Lorenzo Says:

“The basic problem is Maithripala does not have a proven record that would EARN him the presidency”

Not true. What did MR have in 2005 or CBK in 1994? NOTHING!

But MS has done a lot of work.

    1. As irrigation minister he rehabilitated 1,000 tanks.

    2. As acting defence minister he served on 5 occassions. ONLY the MOST trustworthy person would be appointed to such a post.

    3. As agricultural minister he started a cultivation revolution which made SL export rice, etc.

    4. As health minister he achieved many good deeds like expanding hospitals, cutting down tobacco, etc. DESPITE BUDGET CUTS!!

SWORDB was also the health minister before he crossed over.

    5. He managed to bring together powerful diverse political forces – UNP, JVP, JHU, CBK, SF, etc. A tremendous achievement.

    6. He was awarded HARVARD and WHO awards for exceptional leadership in healthcare.

    7. MS is not worse than MR in diplomacy. A large number of our diplomats are MR’s relatives. NONIS, one of the BEST we had, was slapped and kicked by another relative. MR failed to avoid 3 UNHRC defeats. So MS is way ahead of MR in diplomatic matters.

  9. Susantha Wijesinghe Says:

DAYA !! MY3 DID TRY TO HELP HIS BOY BY GIVING A HUNDRED AND ONE CALLS TO DIGs< WHO WENT ON THEIR KNEES TO HELP HIM.

  10. Lorenzo Says:

    SW,

That was just ONE incident and the victim (a son of a police officer) was also involved in the scuffle. MS’s son was arrested the other guy was not arrested because his father was in the police! Since then no more incidents.

Compare that to MALAKA. He is out again!!

  11. Vimutti Says:

Lorenzo – MS being a complete lackey of Ranil and the United States makes him “way ahead of MR in diplomatic matters” because the US won’t haul Sri Lanka before the UNHRC if they could control the Sri Lankan government, then what you are really saying is Sri Lanka should be a neo-colony of the United States. My only point is that we should be having THAT debate in front of the entire nation – SHOULD SRI LANKA BECOME A NEO-COLONY OF THE UNITED STATES AND DO WHATEVER THE US WANTS IT TO DO OR SHOULD IT REMAIN AN INDEPENDENT COUNTRY AND CHART ITS OWN COURSE?

Hiding behind false issues like curbing presidential powers does the nation no good, as the true consequences if Ranil/Maithripala get power and whether this is good for the country never gets debated at all.

  12. Lorenzo Says:

    Vimutti,

We are back to USA! So who are the Americans in the GOSL? I count 4 of them. VERY VERY SENIOR.

With Americans at home, how can we blame America?

I agree we need a debate in front of the masses on the US involvement.

BTW since you mentioned COLONIALISM the first thought that came to my mind is the COMMONWEALTH. You know the rest.

SL can never be independent if GOSL releases Endian drug dealers, promises to fully implement 13, become the chair of the commonwealth, allow British-American Tobacco’s subsidiary to become the largest corporate in SL, run to USA for all medical treatment, scared to ban MONSANTO’s round up, cannot sign the long awaited FTA with China, runs to Endia to explain why we allowed a Chinese sub in Colombo and scared to deport illegals!

  13. Susantha Wijesinghe Says:

LORENZO !! It appears that you seem to have missed some vital news.
One of the Goons of My3s Sons, out of eleven took a photo of a nude man, with the DIGs sons wife in the background. The DIGs son saw this, and walked upto the photographer and said we have all come here to enjoy, I need no trouble, but please delete that photo that you took now. Then My3s son came along, with the other goons and assuaulted the DIGs son mercilessly. It was a brutal assault, and the wife was pleading with her hands clasped, not to assault him. two police officers came and they were also manhandled. When My3 was informed of the fracas, he took a hundred and one calls to DIGs to save his son. The DIG whose son was assaulted mercilessly, kept silent, as he has to put food on the table. These are the imbeciles who are wanting to rule the country. Good luck to them.

  14. Lorenzo Says:

    SW,

That was not what happened. The DIGs son took the powers of his DIG father (as usual) and picked up a fight for no reason. Policemen were used as personal goons by the DIG (not that uncommon in SL).

Anyway how about the imbeciles of Mervin’s son, Dumbinda Silva (blue murder in public in broad day light and scot free), the Thangalla PS chairman, and the kid who ran over 2 men (killing one) when he was practicing for night racing?

I’m still waiting for the trial of Dumbinda Silva for MURDER. When?

Ven Sobitha will RUE the day if and when President Mahinda Rajapaksa is defeated, and a UNP+TNA dominated traitors government captures power in a subsequent General Election!

He can FORGET about Sinhala-Buddhist rights for SEVERAL DECADES at least, because non-Buddhists and Eelamist Tamils will RULE the land!

The BAD OLD DAYS when the SLFP and UNP had Sinhala votes split nearly equally between them, and the Federal Party (ie., ITAK = TNA) was the kingmaker that determined who would rule, based on who could be blackmailed more to serve its Separatist agenda, will be resurrected in Mother Lanka if the UNP+TNA prevails.

Ven Sobitha is living in a FOOLS PARADISE orchestrating the DEMISE of the PATRIOTIC ALLIANCE that VANQUISHED THE SEPARATIST TERRORISTS and is RAPIDLY developing the nation into an IMPREGNABLE FORTRESS with a VIBRANT DEVELOPED NATION ECONOMY!

These MUTTS living in their LALA Land may prove to the WORST ENEMIES of Mother Lanka!

‘Many Sinhalese too unhappy with Rajapaksa’

    ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 01 (Hindu) It is not just the Tamils, but a wide majority of Sinhalese too are disillusioned with President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s government, according to Sobitha Thero, leader of the National Movement for Social Justice (NMSJ) in Sri Lanka.

In an interview to The Hindu on Sunday on the premises of the Nagavihara Buddhist temple near Colombo, he said: “From the police force to the judiciary, the President has everything under his control. People who are corrupt are protected by the government and people are suffering.”

Executive presidency posed a serious threat to democracy and rule of law, he said, making a strong case for constitutional reforms in Sri Lanka.

Perceived as an influential religious leader, the 73-year-old Buddhist monk is one of the chief architects of the campaign for the abolition of executive presidency in the country. With the common opposition platform adopting the issue as its central agenda for the presidential elections scheduled on January 8, 2015, the monk’s pet theme is now in spotlight.

“We had told the government that if they don’t abolish executive presidency, we would have to field a common candidate to challenge him.” Sobitha Thero — along with former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and former Prime Minister and Opposition Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe — now backs Maithripala Sirisena, who recently defected from Mr. Rajapaksa’s party to be named the common candidate. The senior monk’s support to the common opposition platform could potentially dent Mr. Rajapaksa’s Sinhala-Buddhist support base.

“The fact that he [Mr. Rajapaksa] rewrote the Constitution to allow himself a third term created a serious problem for the country,” said the monk, referring to the 2010 amendment removing the two-term limit on presidency.

On whether the Sri Lankan Tamils were likely to support him, he said: “The support of Tamils will be crucial for us in abolishing executive presidency.” Fair negotiations were crucial in addressing the Tamil question, he said, adding that the government needs to constitute a credible parliamentary select committee before insisting that the Tamil leadership come for talks.

“We need a government that will look after the interests of not just the Sinhalese, but also those of Tamils and Muslims. There cannot be any discrimination based on religion, caste or ethnicity. “

  16. Vimutti Says:

Lorenzo – you say “With Americans at home, how can we blame America?”

You obviously have not read Edward Snowden’s insiders account of what REALLY goes on at US embassies around the world. According to Snowden, US Embassies have essentially become SPY BASES and cover for CIA personnel and Special Ops forces who are tasked with stirring up opposition in the countries they operate in; especially countries that are not towing the US line on a number of issues, like ignoring the US China Containment Policy which is what Rajapaksa is doing in Sri Lanka. This is why Snowden fled to China first before securing refuge in Russia. He knew from firsthand experience as an American spy that China is the one country that America fears the most since they are likely to overtake the US in the next couple of years as the largest economy in the world. The fear is China will leverage this economic muscle into security muscle, knocking the US off its perch as the sole superpower in the world. You really should READ Snowden’s account and then look at Rajapaksa’s actions and I am sure you will understand the REAL REASON the US Embassy in Colombo is backing Ranil/Maithripala, and will know for sure that it has nothing to do with executive power, corruption or media freedom – the issues that THEY have identified as ones that make it difficult for them to influence and control the Sri Lankan government – and it is all about using Sri Lanka as part of their asinine China Containment Policy.

King of the Hill is a childish game played by school kids in America, in which the big kid sits at the top of the hill and tries to knock down all of the other kids rising up the hill. This is what American foreign policy has become, which is completely incompatible with economic development goals of Sri Lanka and most of the developing world. America will keep Sri Lanka poor and divided just like they do in all of their client-states. China, on the other hand, takes a “no internal meddling” approach to the countries they invest in and genuinely wants them to rise with them rather than knocking them down. Two diametrically opposed approaches to world development.

Absolutely CORRECT, my friend. You have CLEARLY understood the ESSENTIAL DRIVER behind the ASININE American Policy against Sri Lanka!

  18. Daya Says:

Susantha, it was I who origninally quoted, in these responses, the fact that Maithri’s son had been involved in an unfortunate incident. Well, nobody has suggested that the son be part of the government. As far as I can see, when we talk of Maithri, we are NOT talking about taking on board a whole family; he alone appears to have been involved in politics.

Also, since “101 telephone calls” and “getting down on knees” are metaphorical expressions there is an obvious need to ascertain exactly what happened. In any case, what you are suggesting is that during the past few years public officials have thought it necessary to pander to any request by a powerful politician. MR was the EXECUTIVE President who controlled all. I see it as a positive that Maithri remained a FATHER who was still concerned about his son, but ensured that the son changed his ways. All those graphic details of what happened at Pasikudah have to be investigated credibly to find out what really took place. I’m afraid that I see a need also to keep an open mind about what happened to hapless Tamils who surrendered, or to Muslims who have suffered recently. How can aged nerds like us sitting at computers be aware of what really took place?

What is significant is that British Prime Minister David Cameron’s personal intervention was necessary for a straight-forward lust-driven murder to be even investigated. Witnesses harassed. The very existence of “The Open International University of Complementary Medicines of Colombo” run by Lord Pandit . . . Sir Anton Jayasuriya, of acupuncture fame, from which Mervin Silva BOUGHT his PhD, these are what is wrong with our society.

And is this what a country that was ahead of Singapore has come to? Our associates now are Mauritania, a desert country noted for barbarisms like slavery of Negroes by the minority of Arab stock, genital mutilation of females, and the deliberate fattening of girl children since that is seen as desirable for pulchritude there (don’t keep reading all my drivel – research it all on the Internet). We send our women to still feudalistic countries to work as . . . well, I guess we don’t care! Find out who supports us at the UN. Our relatives don’t dare go to those countries! Yes, there is a Sinhalese Diaspora as well – in the countries that we accuse of meddling in our affairs! We want to associate with WHITE countries! It’s some peculiar sort of inverted racism that we have towards whites – and our young and budding politicians are filled with lust when they see a white woman. Fact? or my invention?

I am very grateful that this forum allows us to post all views, but it may be that we, the parasitic English speakers, are writing too much, and so have to read too much of un-moderated views, and what is significant may get lost in all the verbiage. How little we count! And on what flimsy evidence will those who have NO time to follow all this, or who, in this day and age yet know only their swabasha, on what evidence will they outvote us! What follows, I have already posted; pardon me if some of you have already seen it. However, I feel that all will grant that we must strive for an “inclusive and open society” and have something better than the law of the jungle operating in it.

There can be no doubt that a majority of English speaking people will vote for Maithripala, despite the common perception that he himself speaks no English! That perception is probably right, but it doesn’t matter to me. I am convinced that Maithri is a good man, but he is no simpleton. Most Sinhala speaking people also will resonate with him, but many will vote for the known guy, Mahinda R, mostly out of gratitude for ending the War. How will the minorities vote? I live in the hill country, and I can tell you that come what may, most Up-country Tamils will vote for the present regime. Not much anyone can do about that! I wonder whether Maithri speaks Tamil; Mahinda does! Addressing people in Tamil may make a marginal difference only here, but the “Jaffna Tamils” may not actually get out of their houses on the 8th of January unless a real effort is made to win them over.

I feel duty bound to forward a message from a close friend, a class-mate fifty years ago, from Jaffna, who suffered much at the hands of the LTTE. There are many good people among the Tamils, and reconcilliation is desirable, but ultimately, we’ve got to be conscious of our self-interest! This much I am doing for him: here is his comment:

“There is one school of thought that Rajapakse has bribed the voters so heavily that it may be hard to move him. As many have pointed out, the votes of minorities who have little reason to be enchanted with Rajapakse are going to count very heavily. The trains have come to Jaffna, but the people feel insulted at every turn. What does it mean when the Government celebrates the war victory with great pomp in the South and then beats up Tamils who want to observe the same event as an occasion for mourning – and many have real reason to mourn, even if others want to make a political point of mourning, which is not a criminal offence?

Maithripala Sirisena’s side does not even seem to have woken up to the fact that there are people other than Sinhalese speakers who have the vote – all the speeches and symbolism of their campaign are in Sinhalese, the Sinhala Only mindset. If the minorities see Rajapakse and Sirisena as Tweedledum and Tweedledee, they are not going to do much to send Rajapakse packing.

I hope you could pass this on to quarters where it would count.”

Whatever the Muslim politicians may say in public, a majority of Muslims will vote for Maithri; the Rajapaksas have needlessly alienated them over too long a period for that to be reversed.

However, despite all this, the odds favour the Rajapaksas because there isn’t any real grinding poverty, and he has certainly has my gratitude for eliminating the LTTE. However, I’m beginning to feel that it is the future that we must think about when voting.

How often have we seen a good first term followed by a disappointing second! We will all remember Janaka Bandara Tennakoon’s tears at Dambulla. Whatever the outcome of the elections, I hope that the new President (and I’m predicting that it will be Mahinda R) who greets the Pope on the 13th of January to usher a six year rule, is somebody gentler than we have known for the past four years.

  19. Ananda-USA Says:

    Daya,

    Your Tamil friend had said,

“What does it mean when the Government celebrates the war victory with great pomp in the South and then beats up Tamils who want to observe the same event as an occasion for mourning – and many have real reason to mourn, even if others want to make a political point of mourning, which is not a criminal offence?”

This Comment encapsulates the WHOLE PROBLEM in a NUTSHELL!

The very people who were liberated from slavery of the LTTE, to go about ther business today as law-abiding citizens, now want to mourn the demise of their tormentors … the LTTE … who murdered all those who opposed them; kidnapped, brainwashed and caused their children to be used as cannon fodder, and blew into bits, hung from lamp posts, executed in mass graves, and sliced and diced in the dead of the night, tens of thousands of innocent people, in a war they waged to create a Mono-Ethnic Aparthied State for Tamils Only.

In which part of the world are Pol Pots and their murderous followers allowed to be mourned on the same footing as the people who saved the innocents? Nowhere, is the answer. Just like the Germans who joined the Nazi Party and supported the Third Reich in its muderous rampage across Europe, Tamils who overtly or covertly aided and abetted the LTTE to carve out a Mono-Ethnic Aparthied State through murderous no-holds barred violence that puts the barbarous killers of the Islamic State to shame, should drown their shame and guilt in whatever booze they can find, and thank their Gods that they are still alive today to complain about their failure to triumph.

This reminds me of the tale about the man who AXED both of his parents to death, and PLEADED with the sentencing judge for CLEMENCY, because he was now an ORPHAN!

Jewish people have a GREAT LABEL for this kind of Hypocrisy & Affrontery: Chutzpah!

Please, let us REJECT this ABSOLUTE HYPOCRISY of Eelamist Tamils TOTALLY, and reserve our COMPASSION for the TRULY DESERVING VICTIMS of their horrors!

  20. Lorenzo Says:

    Vimutti,

Look at the other side. It is the very same reason for green cards too.

They are still US citizens and their children are US citizens too. And they will go back when (2015 or 2020 or 2026) they lose. This is how they manipulate.

    e.g. Takshin, Marcos

  21. Lorenzo Says:

“This reminds me of the tale about the man who AXED both of his parents to death, and PLEADED with the sentencing judge for CLEMENCY, because he was now an ORPHAN!”

An excellent analogy how the Tamil mind works!

  22. Sunil Mahattaya Says:

Hopefully Maithripala Sirisena, Ranil W and Chandrika K have read these somments as they would make them feel very insecure about their chances as promising as what is being expressed is a total rejection of their aspirations to portray the President as inept which he is far from being although there are many grey areas he needs to address towards restitution. He still has what it takes towards projecting the Nation towards progress whereas his opponents appear to be a bunch of deadbeat losers whose ambits are directed towards their own interests rather than that of the nation! They are part of a bandwagon of deserters, ship jumpers and opportunists who by virtue of their conspiratorial approach to attempts at unseating the President will ostracise them from decent Sri Lankan society!

  23. Vimutti Says:

Lorenzo – you keep evading the reality that MR is moving AWAY from and CHALLENGING US foreign policy with his growing relationship with China, whereas MS recently said “China expansionism” is something he is concerned about, which is the MAIN concern of the US Embassy folks in Colombo, the US State Department folks in Washington, DC, and George Soros, who is funding and associated with all of the NGOs (Human Rights Watch, International Crisis Group, Transparency International, etc.) that are now currently focused on helping pursue war crimes accusations against Sri Lanka at the UNHRC.

Again, this is not about passports and greencards, it is about who you have aligned yourself with and how this benefits or harms Sri Lanka.

  24. Lorenzo Says:

Now GR is also in trouble with some UPFA MPs.

They blame GR for waiting till MR went abroad to get MS to open the Pettah floating market.

    Youtube: Colombo Floating Market opening

It was indeed MS who opened it with GR.

(BTW MS and GR are best friends, still.)

  25. Independent Says:

    Daya,

Can you please ask your Jaffna friend why their demands never end.

    * They have already got their council to run all the government work themselves. Other Palaath Sabhas do not have the independence they have as they are answerable to the Chief Minister who is answerable to the President indirectly but surely.

    * They are allowed to go to any country to complain. No other Palaath Sabha has that previlage.

    * They have their own Indian Embassy. Jaffna to Colombo is only 200+ km. Even in Australia where main cities are 1000-4000 km apart, they have only one embassy. I don’t thing any other country has allowed this.

    * They have a train to go to Colombo which only Tamils occupy all the seats. When coming back they can have many seats if they come in early, if not seats guaranteed after Anuradhapura.

    * They have luxury busses to go to Jaffna.

    * All the work in government offices done in their language and even if a Sinhala person ask for a translation, it is not available. In any other area , they will be given a translator.

    * The government has allowed them to steal all the land occupied by Sinhalese by force.

    * Government has not settled 20000 Sinhala population their boys chased out.

    * They have direct connection Tamil Nadu and are able to travels their as they wish. Sinhalese in the South are not welcome there.

In other words President Rajapakse has almost given their Ealam as far as the law allowed. Why don’t the rush and vote for him 100%. Why should they vote My3 ?

  26. Vimutti Says:

Independent – they will vote for Maithripala according to TNA leader Sampanthan because he will GO FURTHER than MR and hand over land and police powers as described in the 13th Amendment, and THEN they will have their Elam!

What MS doesn’t understand is that so soon after the war with many former LTTE people still on the street, giving police and land powers at this point could well lead to the re-emergence of terrorism and demands for complete statehood next.

If Samanthan really wants to live separately from others in Sri Lanka, he should emigrate to Tamil Nadu and leave us alone. The Samanthan case is yet another example for Lorenzo that it doesn’t matter what your passport says, it matters where your true allegiance based on your ACTIONs is, and in the Samanthan case it is with Tamil Nadu.

  27. Lorenzo Says:

    Independent,

It is NOT the right time to discuss these HEAVY topics.

Lets not push it too far. They might boycott the election again.

    Vimutti,

He is NOT a US citizen. TN cannot grant citizenship. Only Endia can.

  28. Lorenzo Says:

Wimal W’s MSD has been replaced by STF. GR is also disappointed. He confided his disappointment to Sagala Ratnayaka’s brother. Only GR and Chamal are sensible people.

There is a rumor WW might also crossover.

I don’t like MS promising defence minister post to SF. We need someone who is easy to work with. IF SF is going to punish GR, we don’t want SF.

  29. SA Kumar Says:

Why don’t the rush and vote for him 100%. Why should they vote My3 ?
because MR killed our Thesiya Thalaivar VP & liberated 297,000 peoples .

IF SF is going to punish GR, we don’t want SF- SF is not Bhudha, He will put GR in jail before he use his green card to fly USA.

There is a rumor WW might also crossover. – Common…. Wimal you can do it ???

  30. Susantha Wijesinghe Says:

DAYA !! My comment was only about the Passekudah incident. You seem to be going at a tangent, and presenting all that harangue and crap about David Cameron etc, which Iam not interested in. You can pass it yourself to where it would count.

  31. Daya Says:

Susantha, the one thing that detractors have been able to home in on about Maithri is this serious incident which involved NOT the old man who has led a blameless life, but his callow son. What I have done is discomfited you by hauling up a series of other, much more culpable and systematic horrors – the ones we know of. If they involved humbler, non-English speaking and low profile personalities, they wouldn’t even be talked about. There is no war anymore, there are no bombs, but there is another sort of fear psychosis that has now begun to manifest itself among the people.

I don’t like David Cameron myself, but my reference to him here was very pertinent. It’s the government led by Mahinda R. that created the conditions that allowed the Prime Minister of our last Colonial occupier to wield again a big stick against us.

  32. Independent Says:

    Lorenzo,
WW cannot sit with BBS unless Norway issue is solved between the tow parties. He should cross.
Why SF requesting defence ministry ? Start his commission on military hardware business again ?
But he is not asking defence secretary post. Defence minister is the President himself ?

Minister of Disaster management has created a disaster to the president. He has said since the President Family and Friends have earned enough wealth, they will want anymore , so rather than voting My3, who will start building his own wealth, people should vote the President !I saw this news in Ravaya. Actually logical but stupid !

  33. Lorenzo Says:

“Defence minister is the President himself ?”

Not necessarily. Lalith was DM of JR. Ranjan was DM of RP.

Yes. WW should cross than sit with NORWEGIAN FUNDED BBS.

  34. Lorenzo Says:

There is a NEW distance measure in SL.

“How far is your home from Nugekoda junction?”

“It is 20 Mahinda billboards towards Maaragama”

  35. Ananda-USA Says:

It really amuses me to read comments on allocation of Ministerial Portfolios by the hapless Maithripala Sirisena to various codgers.

This is all WASTED VERBIAGE; it will NEVER COME TO PASS for the President WILL WIN BY A LANDSLIDE!

The Common Opposition is just arranging the chairs on the deck of the good ship Titanic! Listen for the coming CRUNCH folks!

Dear old STAND-UP COMIC Maithripala Sirisena will learn what Sarath Gonseka learned to his dismay: Everyone will ABANDON HIM TO THE WOLVES right after the Election! Time to brush up on the Party Jokes for your next career, dear MS!

  36. Lorenzo Says:

    Ananda,

Don’t you think it is EQUALLY applicable to MR?

  37. Ananda-USA Says:

    Lorenzo,

Nah! I don’t think it applies to MR at all!

  38. Independent Says:

    Lorenzo,
Billboards ? Cannot beat the one during commonwealth rubbish which said “World Leader” or something.
I don’t know why the President doesn’t want to stop these. This is Mervyn Silva politics.

  39. Ananda-USA Says:

As I had PREDICTED, HERE COMES the TNA bearing aloft its SEPARATIST DEMAND FOR FEDERALISM to the Common Opposition!

Thinking that the SINHALA Vote will be SPLIT 50-50 as in the BAD OLD DAYS, when the Federal Party was KINGMAKER deciding which major party will rule the Nation, the TNA is ALREADY exploiting its electoral leverage to BLACKMAIL the Common Opposition into granting its SEPARATIST demands!

We OWN Colombo and the Northern Province, they say, GIVE US FEDERALISM and we will MAKE YOU KING!

I FERVENTLY HOPE & PRAY that the Patriots of Sri Lanka RECOGNIZE these moves for what they really are, as DAGGERS POINTED at the heart of Sri Lanka’s Integrity & Unity.

I hope they will DEMOLISH by Leaf, Branch, Trunk and Root the TREACHEROUS “Common Opposition” move for Regime Change, that will REVERSE the Victory of May 18, 2009, and HALT the TRANSFORMATION of our Motherland into the New Wonder of Asia!

    ……………………….
Sri Lankan opposition candidate rejects Tamil federalism plan

    ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 02 (AP) In an agreement with a major Buddhist political party, an opposition presidential candidate in Sri Lanka said on Tuesday that he opposes a proposal from Tamil leaders for a federal model granting greater autonomy to Provinces to solve the country’s decades-long ethnic conflict.

Maithripala Sirisena also agreed with the National Heritage Party, led by a Buddhist monk, to preserve the constitutional prominence given to Buddhism.

The two parties made the pact as opposition parties try to unseat President Mahinda Rajapaksa in the January 8 elections. Mr. Rajapaksa has ruled for 10 years, and is going for his third term in office.

Leaders from the ethnic Tamil minority have proposed making Sri Lanka into a federal state that would grant significant power to Provinces.

Mr. Sirisena also promised to resist attempts to prosecute Mr. Rajapaksa for war crimes allegedly committed in the final months of the civil war.

The United Nations Human Rights Council is investigating the Sri Lankan government and the defeated Tamil Tiger rebels for possible war crimes but Mr. Rajapaksa’s government has refused to cooperate.

  40. Independent Says:

Well done My3 ! People must demand from the President for such a pledge too!

  41. Ancient Sinhalaya Says:

Who is going to gain from this fiasco. Traitor National Alliance (TNA) and the mossies.
Mossies waiting in the wings, weighing up options to see which side is going to win and
jump in the band wagon with all their demands for a separate state (initially) in the
Kalmunay area. They know with multiplying like xxxx, it is a matter of time before they
overwhelm the country. They’ve already beaten Tamils to 3rd place with uncontrolled breeding.

Eelamists won’t give up their dream of a real eelam even they are down to just one vote.
They had mythical kingdoms (we all still see the remains of those buildings in the north
and east). This is Sri Lanka. This is the tunnel-vision Sinhalese and the Tamils.
They still don’t see the danger looming. Mossies slowly destroying both races!
Keep fighting. Thanks to UnPatriotic Party (UNP) for dividing the Sinhalese once again.
Another 50 years of UnP, will see the end of Sinhalese and Buddhism in Sri Lanka.

  42. Lorenzo Says:

    AS,

Compare the positions of TNA and SLMC in 2009 and 2014.

    PARTY……….2009………………..2014
    TNA………….lost soul…………….chief minister
TNA………….no voice in IC………regular STATE FUNDED anti-SL foreign trips
    SLMC………..no bodies……………justice minister
SLMC………..junk………………….runs the EPC through SLMC PCs
    # mosques…X……………………..X+1080
(include houses used as registered prayer centers).
    Koti Ganesaon…UNP………………UPFA (deputy minister)

Should we change this pattern or not?

  43. Ananda-USA Says:

Despite his DENIAL, does Maithripala Sirisena, the Executive President for 100 days, and PUPPET of the UNP and the TNA, have any POWER to deny a “FEDERAL MODEL” to the TNA? NO! He does not call the SHOTS …. all that is ELECTION POSTURING!

What is AMAZING is how this man, a 47-year SLFPer, who knows the entire HISTORY of treachery by Ranil’s UNPEE and the Tiger Nominated Agents (TNA), is WILLING to HAND OVER his Motherland to them to DISMANTLE again!

This is a TRAITOR of VAST PROPORTION driven by FRUSTRATED AMBITION & PERSONAL ANGER against the Rajapaksa Family from whom he has benefited MIGHTILY…. just like Sarath Gonseka!

He cares not WHAT WILL HAPPEN to HIS MOTHERLAND! Send him HOME to scrape Coconuts in his kitchen!

  44. Ananda-USA Says:

    Lorenzo,

You said “I have GIVEN UP on corruption. It will NOT be reduced significantly in the foreseeable future. That is why I DELIBERATELY left it out in my examples.”

BUT, BUt, But, but …. You were so GUNG HO about Corruption as the SOLE PROVINCE of the Rajapaksa Family ONLY YESTERDAY, but you have now GIVEN UP? Because that allegation is UNSUPPORTABLE as the SOLE INVENTION of the Rajapaksas … perhaps?

Whisper to me softly Effendi Lorenzo, WHAT ELSE will you GIVE UP TOMORROW after VOCIFEROUSLY ARGUING FOR IT TODAY with ALL GUNS ablaze?

ALL FURY AND RAPID FIRE without MUCH THINKING of the CONSEQUENCES of your furious proposals!

  45. Lorenzo Says:

    Ananda-USA,

I have NOT blamed Rajapakshas for corruption. It is a STRUCTURAL PROBLEM MR cannot resolve. We need structual adjustments to overcome corruption.

  46. Independent Says:

    Lorenzo,
    “Structural Problem” ?

It may not be. Look at the CPI ( corruption index).

Although people call Chandrika “Chaura Queen” during her time CPI was 62 units, close to Thailand.
Since the President took over, it jumped above 90 beating India, still behind Bangladesh. This year came down a bit.

So it appears structural + personal. I believe it is the “personal” component that matter most. Without it , “structural” adjustments will NEVER happen.

  47. Independent Says:

But no one bothered over this since there was much more important Tiger Hunting to do.
Now it is over we cannot carry guns and increase it more, rather must attend to these extremely important issues.

The problem is the KUDU issue which has reached a critical condition under this government as never before. I known Mr. Gotabhaya is fighting but having Kudu Duminda as a friend will not help. PM caught up in KUDU racket. Knowing his thuggery character personally, I am convinced he himself is into this horrible business. I know what he did in Gampola those days.
But he is the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, the “Miracle of Asia”. Guardian of the Buddha Saasana !

  48. Ananda-USA Says:

    Lorenzo,

You said “I have NOT blamed Rajapakshas for corruption.”

    HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT?

OF COURSE YOU HAVE blamed the Rajapaksas for ALL the Corruption in Sri Lanka, EVER SINCE MR began seeking a 3rd term, and you started your campaign to undermine his RE-ELECTION. You BEGAN with Corruption and moved onto other allegations also, as you got into top gear.

No point DENYING now Lorenzo; your words are jn the LankaWeb Archives! Stand up like a man, and TAKE DUE CREDIT …. its all YOURS!

  49. Lorenzo Says:

Thanks Independent for that FACTUAL account and a credible source (transparency international).

So SL has slipped the ranks of corruption from 67 during Bandit’s time (2004) to 85 (2014) during MR’s time.

A VERY BAD increase in corruption. Honestly, this is news to me. I KNEW corruption is everywhere but never imagined there are more LESS CORRUPT countries AHEAD OF SL today than in Bandit’s time.

As I said before we need a good STRUCTURE to reduce corruption and now I AGREE we need BETTER LEADERS to REDUCE corruption.

But there is a better way. Let’s shoot the messenger, bash transparency international and keep robbing!

  50. Lorenzo Says:

    Ananda,

NO. I for one forgave MR for corruption which he inherited. It was other issues that I took up until now.

    But TRANSPARENCY INTERNATIONAL shows otherwise.

  51. Sunil Mahattaya Says:

very well put Ananda when you write `”What is AMAZING is how this man, a 47-year SLFPer, who knows the entire HISTORY of treachery by Ranil’s UNPEE and the Tiger Nominated Agents (TNA), is WILLING to HAND OVER his Motherland to them to DISMANTLE again!

He cares not WHAT WILL HAPPEN to HIS MOTHERLAND! Send him HOME to scrape Coconuts in his kitchen!

Better still. strip them of political freedoms ( Ranil, Chandrika, the JHU, JVP etc.) with the help of the voters and rehabilitate them into acquiring a patriotic sense rather than the one of betraying the Nation to its enemies.
It does sound draconian but their modus operandi needs a draconian response.

  52. Vimutti Says:

Lorenzo is correct, Transparency International is NOT an objective source, and is funded by Jewish American billionaire, George Soros, who is the key financial sponsor of the Arab Spring and regime change around the world. Other Soros funded NGOs operating in Sri Lanka are Human Rights Watch, International Crisis Group, Reporters Without Borders, and Open Society Foundations. All of these Soros NGOs are tasked with influencing public opinion in favor of REGIME CHANGE in the countries they target, and in the Sri Lanka case they want to use the island as a testing ground for future efforts to divide up into small parts and thereby weaken certain up and coming powerful nations like China, India, Indonesia, and Russia that may threaten US-EU hegemony.

    Google: “Exposing the International Arbiter”

Other interesting reading on the Soros NGOs, Google:

“Pillay’s panel from the shadow of George Soros”

“A Soros-Made “New World Order” Takes Shape at the UN”

“SOROS ADMITS RESPONSIBILITY FOR COUP AND MASS MURDER IN UKRAINE”

    and

“Soros Criminal Conviction Exposes Human Rights Scam”

    From Human Events:

Soros has repeatedly said that he sees himself as a messianic figure. Who but a megalomaniac would make these comments? “I admit that I have always harbored an exaggerated view of my self-importance—to put it bluntly, I fancied myself as some kind of god” or “I carried some rather potent messianic fantasies with me from childhood, which I felt I had to control, otherwise I might end up in the loony bin.”

  53. Vimutti Says:

As implied from the Soros scheme in my last post, the way to defeat it is to form an economic and security alliance with China, India, Indonesia, and Russia, which would dwarf the US-EU in terms of economic output and prosperity and security for centuries to come. This is why the US-EU is trying so hard to convince India that China is some sort of existential threat to them because if India does not fall for that and unites with China, the whole divisive scheme of the West unravels permanently.

Sri Lanka is actually playing a major role in demonstrating to India that China is not a threat to them at all, which is why the US-EU are so concerned about Rajapaksa as president, and want a dumber more compliant leader (Ranil/Maithripala) in Sri Lanka who does not fully understand the full picture in the international arena.

  54. Lorenzo Says:

Why everything has to end up in Jew bashing?

    This is not right.

Soros has not done anything against SL so leave him alone. SL has $11 billion export earnings but a $20 billion debt. So no wise man will want to manipulate SL currency for profit!

  55. Vimutti Says:

Lorenzo – it is not about Jew Bashing – it is about megalomania and wealth, and how this is being played out on the world’s stage. The Jewish connection has more to do with how Soros sees himself and the world – it is through the Jewish prism of feeling the world is going to wipe you and your race out unless you harness as much power as possible, and messianic notions of ‘saving the world’ from those who you cannot control.

I think the world has had enough of viewing everything through this prism, and wants the West to pipe down and live within its own borders. Constantly meddling in the internal affairs of other countries that you believe pose a threat to your world domination schemes only creates a lot of unnecessary tension and is completely incompatible with the self-determination ideal of free people in these countries. It is not about what the West thinks should be the public policy in a given country, it is about what the people of that country think should be the public policy. Period.
