Rt. Hon john Key,
Prime Minister of New Zealand.
Dear Mr. Key,
Our hearts go out to Sydney residents as they cope with the terrorist siege in their CBD. Sri Lankan’s more than any other appreciate their ordeal and challenges, having had to endure much worse at the hands of the Tamil Tigers for three decades.
Sri Lankan sympathies and concern are even more heightened because Australia along with New Zealand were the only two western countries to detract from the US, UK Canada & EU led censure of Sri Lanka at UNHCR in March for three years running, for alleged human rights violations in the process of overcoming Tiger Terrorism successfully in May 2009. These allegations have now been shown to be patently untrue (www.lankasave.com) but are being pursued by different groups motivated by political self interest, though each of a different type.
The Sydney events show again why the west should draw on Sri Lanka’s experience rather than sanction it for their achievement. New Zealand , should use their new found muscle in Washington and UNSC to veer US and it’s allies away from the expected increased censure in the coming March.
