INDIA ALLOCATES US$ 100 MILLION FOR THE REHABILITATION OF THE SRI LANKAN IDP

Presenting his budget for 2009-10 IndiaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee announced that the government has set aside Indian money worth US $100 million for the internally Displaced People in Northern and Eastern Sri Lanka.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ He said the amount, Indian Rupees 5000 million will be spent for rehabilitation of the for the Sri Lankan Tamil people who were displaced due to the war between the Tamil Tigers and the Sri Lankan government troops.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Addressing the Lok Sabha, the lower House of the Indian parliament Mukherjee said the money is intended to be spent for nearly 300,000 Tamil civilians housed in various welfare centers in Sri Lanka following the three dacades long war in Sri Lanka.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Mukherjee further said the UPA government is committed to ensuring that the Sri Lankan Tamils enjoy their rights and legitimate aspirations within the territorial sovereignty and framework of the countryƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s constitution (eom)
