WHAT A CHOICE- PITY THE SRI LANKAN VOTER

The Sri Lankan voter has been asked to appoint a person to be the next President . A President who will be a dictator for the next 6 years with a subservient parliament ,Judiciary, Public service , a power given to that position by a Machiavellian Jayawardena who manipulated a parliament by holding the members to ransom. The cunning architect of all evil in that country had the resignation letters of the MPs with which he threatened . This really brings into question the legality of this position. No one dare question that position if he or she did they were scared of a white van.

Getting back to the two main contenders. Both are claiming they will fight corruption. Under one there was blatant embezzlement of wealth. From hedging to Mihin Air it was a question of embezzlement. No word was heard from the maha raja when this was going on. The other contender claims he is honest but his Son In Law had a arms company in America when the contender the father in law was the army commander. It is said of course that the arms company had dealings with arms sales to Sri Lanka. This is too close for comfort. Are they now saying we have been both corrupt but will turn a new leaf if appointed? Or are they saying that the Sri Lankan voters are idiots. They will never see through it.

Next the position regarding the tamil voters . Both are saying that the rights of he tamils are going to be redressed but the question is Sri Lanka is not appointing a president to address the problems of tamils only. All the people of that country has rights issues because of the political and its associated corruption. The issue hear is one of fair play for all. General Fonseka has done one better. He alleged to have signed an agreement with the remnants of the LTTE to give them what they could not get by war in the presence of two western diplomats. Up till today he has not let the citizens know what the agreement was neither has he denied it. He should as he has a traitor to the sinhala nation in Ranil Wickremesinghe supporting him. People are kept ignorant .

How can the voters decide , Both are not honest with the voters , both have connections with corruption . How can the poor voter decide whom to appoint as the next maharajano. Since the only star on both contenders is that they won the war against the tigers , The one who will sell the country at the instigation of the whites diplomats should not get any vote. It is time General Fonseka is honest and publishes his agreement if not he does not deserve the vote of any patriotic citizen.

Yes, pity the poor voter and the choice he has before him – a known devil – and not an unknown angel, as some would have you believe – but another devil who is showing his true colours as the campaign progresses. There are a lot of reasons for not voting for Mahinda Rajapakse. So, also with his main challenger, Sarath Fonseka. But, faced with the unenviable dilemma of choosing between two not so appealing candidates, I will choose the man who stood up to the foreign powers when they wanted the war against the LTTE to be halted in its final stages, and achieved what other Presidents before him had failed to do – overcome the LTTE.

I cannot place my trust in someone who seems to want to be all things unto all men, someone who appears to promise all sorts of things to all manner of people including the TNA. I cannot see how you can be the common candidate of parties with such diverse policies and histories as the UNP and the JVP. In 1956 Mr SWRD Bandaranaike came to power heading a coalition of parties whose policies were very, very different but were in a coalition with the sole motive of defeating the UNP. And Mr Bandaranaike was to discover that his victory came at a great price. Much of his time was taken up in keeping the peace between the ‘warring tribes’ of his unsteady coalition. Sri Lanka cannot afford a repeat of that depressing experience. I also do not have much respect for the loose tongued, as Sarath Fonseka showed himself to be during his interview with a Sunday newspaper. On that occasion he demonstrated a lack of both discretion and, arguably, even loyalty, both qualities I want to see in those who aspire for high office.
