Dr.P.A.Samaraweera, Australia

Eight months ago, with the defeat of the LTTE, Gen. Fonseka’s popularity was at it’s height. He became an idol overnight. This led to his greed for power.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
The bankrupt politicians who smelt this used him as a cat’s paw sponsoring him for the Presidential elections. He thought he could use Obama’s strategyƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ but Obama’s oratorical skills are no match for him. Fonseka’s speeches were more in military style. Some speeches made by him to discredit the govt backfired as they were against the army which he led.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ He continued these allegations after the elections. For eg on the 8th Monday he said that, “…he is prepared to give evidence in an International court on war crimes charges against the govt. I am not going to save anyone who has committed war crimes… I am definitely going to reveal what I know, what I was told and what I heard…”
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
This is shocking because all this is fodder for the US State Dept., Human Rights Activists, NGO’s etc., and they allege that the Sri Lankan govt. committed war crimes during the final phase of the war against the Tigers.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
During this period, the govt had been processing Gen. Fonseka’s alleged fraudulent military deals, committing military offences such as revealing military secrets. The latest is his alleged planning to stage a coup to overthrow the govt. A senior military official has said that they are inquiring into all the activities of Gen. Fonseka and if he had violated the code of conduct of the army he will face a court martial.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
The main charges against him are:
a) Plan to stage a coup to over throw the govt.
b) Politicking whilst in uniform
c) Conspiring against the Commander in Chief
d) Harbouring more than 1500 deserters and
e) Corrupt practices in relation to military procurements.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
So his high popularity led to his greed for power and thereby aligning with bankrupt political partiesƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ led to his downfall.
