Hon.Mr.Stephen Smith,
Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Federal Government of Australia
Canberra

Dear Sir,

Ministerial Statement on the 17th March in Federal Parliament

It was encouraging to see that the foreign minister of Australia reading a balanced report on Sri Lanka at the recent Parliamentary sitting. All over the Globe we hear, read, biased reports ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-prepared by anti Sri Lankan agentsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ being articulated or printed by the influential leaders of Governments.

Sri Lanka is a developing country that needs every encouragement, guidance and financial support. The country after recovering from three decades of destruction both materially and economically is making a genuine effort to rebuild the country providing all basic requirements to her citizens and ushering ever lasting PEACE by wining the hearts and minds of those who believed that they have been deprived of rights.

These weaknesses were exacerbated by the Western World who still try to create a ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-KosovoƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ or East TimorƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ type separation without fully understanding the History of the Country. They must understand this country which has a written history for nearly three thousand years is quite capable of solving its internal problems with local solutions. The only country that has never killed its citizens for the sake of a religion! When the savages destroyed the Bamiyan Buddha statues in Afghanistan Buddhist did not issue a fatwa unlike Islamic fundamentalists.

Since the eradication of the terrorist group, the expatriate Sinhalese all over the Globe started sending funds and various types of material support towards the IDP welfare. However it is very sad to mention, that the expatriate Tamil Diaspora instead of helping their kith and kin, have started forming Transnational Eelam Governments in exile with the help of misguided Parliamentarians, Academics and media to introduce violence in a subtle way. This would allow legalizing the collection of funds.

We see on TV frequent arrival of boat people from Sri Lanka, thereƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s was no reason even in the past for the Tamils in Sri Lanka to flee from the country under the false pretext that they have been harassed or ill treated by the Government. Sri Lanka has never differentiated its citizens due to their ethnicity. Some flee the country to avoid the harassment and abduction of their children by LTTE, and some to capitalise the situation just to migrate to a developed country.

Now the country is safe for all citizens, no one needs to risk their life in boats, no country should accommodate them at the expense of genuine refugees from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Tibet to name a few.

In conclusion I extend my sincere gratitude in appreciation of your balanced presentation in the Federal Parliament.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Yours Sincerely,

Vajeera Warnakulasuriya
Melbourne
