Stop the abuse of women in the Middle East

Ben Silva

It has been reported in the media that our women in the Middle East are abused and ill treated. It is reported that many arrive back in Sri Lanka in body bags. These women could be our mothers, sisters and our daughters. No human should be abused or ill treated and it is time to take action.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ We should stop sending women to work as domestics. I have the following alternative ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ programmes, that have many positive points.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ There could be fast track ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ training/education programmes in different fields, to develop skills, depending on theƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  persons wishes. One year, fast track, craft training ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ programmes that may be useful are:ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

  1. Plumbing
  2. Electrician
  3. Carpentry
  4. Catering
  5. Driving
  6. Air conditioning
  7. Motor mechanics
  8. Cooking
  9. Hotel management/Tourism, Hospitality
  10. Care assistants
  11. Building construction

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ My own recommendations are on the first 6 above, as these skills mayƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  be in demand for at least for a few more years. Unfortunately, in the modern world, it is changing fastƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  andƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  there is no such thing as a ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”job for lifeƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Other suitable programmes are:

  1. Nursing
  2. Nurse assistants
  3. Accountancy
  4. Book keeping
  5. It skills

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Once a person complete basic training, barriers should be removed for progressionƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  to professional fields. We should develop a ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”can doƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ attitude and develop skills to survive in the modern world and stop living in the past.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Some of the fast track schemes have been tried in UK, where the selection has been based on basic numeracy and language tests, Pre test numeracy and language support could be given. Throughout the course the trainees should be given support in terms of study skills, mathematics, English language support, time management skills etc.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ As a short term measure, abuse incidents should be reported to HRW and AI and other human rights organizations so that they do some thing useful for a change and move away from being the mouth piece of terrorists.
