Raj Rajaratnam the Sri Lankan born American criminal said that ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-in Sri Lanka rupees fifty thousand will bring a judge to dine with you.ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  What has that got to do with you in the crimes you commited in the USA?

Raj was charged for insider trading in the USA and received a jail sentence for 11 years.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  With good behaviour he may be out in seven years.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  So the crime he commited in the USA why is he accusing a Sri Lankan judge for bribery and corruption?ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Fifty thousand rupees is only a poultry sum in Sri Lanka.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  It cost rupees 2.5million for Thilanga Sumathipala to get a judge to hear his case on a public holiday to release him from the remand prison where he received all the luxuries in life including an air conditioned bungalow with a wide screen TV inside the prison.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  That was during the time of CBK and Sarath Silva.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  But this incident has no connection with Raj RajaratnamƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s case.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Is he implying on the judge of the USA?ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  The writer is in a big puzzle not knowing where to find the right answer.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Does he mean it was Sarath Silva or the judge who released Thilanga Sumathipala from the remand prison?ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Whatever the case may be, the writer takes his hat off to Thilanga Sumathipala for teaching a good lesson to Sarath and CBK.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  It was only flimsy charges that Sarath Silva and CBK cooked up to take the revenge from Thilanga.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  CBK and Sarath Silva together used the countryƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s judiciary to harass the public whom they despised. BUT WHERE DOES THIS CLOWN RAJ RAJARATNAM COME FROM? Raj must hit back at the USA judge who convicted him for insider trading in the USA.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Perhaps he meant it was a judge in the USA could be bought over for a chicken feed of rupees fifty thousand.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Fifty thousand rupees in US dollars is only 4500.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Well in that scenario the writer must assume it was a judge in the USA and not a judge in Sri Lanka.

Raj, you lived a life of a rich man while supporting and funding the terrorists in Sri Lanka.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  You paid the terrorists to kill innocent Sri Lankans.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  In Buddhism it is called your own KARMA.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  11 years in jail is one hell of a long time Raj.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  By the time you left the jail, hell of a lot of things have changed in the world.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  You miss a hell of a lot of fun in life.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  By the time you left the jail you will be a broken down human being.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  You have 11 years for yourself only to think of those innocent people you killed. Some 60,000 or so.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  From now on, each night you go to sleep, if you can get any, think of those innocent families who lost their loved ones.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  AT LEAST NOW YOU TELL YOUR RACISTS, TERRORIST SUPPORTING TAMIL DIASPORA TO DROP THEIR RACISTS ATTIRE AND LEARN TO LIVE AND LET LIVE.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  THE WRITER TELLS YOU TO TELL THOSE RASICTS TO LEAD A LIFE LIKE PATRIOT HON. TELLI C RAJASINGHAM.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  LONG LIVE IN PRISON RAJ RAJARATNAM.

I really cannot understand what the writer is trying to say. He is admitting that SL’s judiciary is corrupt by bringing in Thilanga’s case. However he is bringing in another issue related to ex CJ which is a current topic. It appears to me that his real motive is to support the charges against ex CJ. If he wanted to attack Raj, he should have focused on the bigger picture:
Raj got the seed money from LTTE. He made big money out of it, sponsored terrorism in SL, contributed to political campaigns in his adopted country and became influential. To my mind, Secretary of state going to Tamil Nadu, TNA going to meet various top people in US are all interconnected and are the results of Raj’s influence.

Raj Rajaratnam was in pursuit of wealth at any cost while not fully understanding of the rules, regulations and laws in the USA. The rules, regulations and laws in the USA apply to everyone, no matter who you are or how rich you are. Some Indian and Sri Lankan entrepreneurs who are in pursuit of wealth in the USA strongly believe that the rules, regulations and laws can be ignored if you are rich.

Good article and the good comments.

Definitely, CJ has got into nerves of some people. Therefore long after his retirement, it is imperative to prosecute former CJ before he scuttles everything.

Aloy, like you, I also am at a loss to understand what exactly this writer is getting at. Anyway, if you care to read Rajaratnam’s interview with Newsweek, you will find the following is what is reported as having said.

“In Sri Lanka I would have given the judge 50,000 rupees and he’d be sitting having dinner at my house. Here, I got my shot. The American justice system is by and large fair.”

The comment gives some insight to this man’s thinking. It seems to indicate that he believed money could buy anything and/or that he had in fact obtained favours in that fashion. It is instructive to read the entire report of the interview – he comes across as prepared to blame others and complain of prejudice but not prepared to accept wrong doing on his part.

There is no doubt Raj Rajaratnam funded the terrorist in Sri Lanka. The question I like to ask is how did he mange to transfer funds without the knowledge of the establishment?
If those in authority knew ( My understanding is that he has made several visits to Sri Lanka and has met number of very influential people in the establishment) why did not they document his activities and report to US government.
It is important that the full facts are established by a thorough investigation.

It would be interesting to find out how money influential characters in Sri Lanka in the establishment benefited through his Investment arm or his contribution. I think when he talks about bribing a judge we should read between the lines and reflect on his comments.

oldfarm39, you are right. Our opposition politicians will not talk about going to Pamankada and Alimankada for nothing (and perhaps suffering defeat after defeat for that). They too may have been heavily bribed. But do not believe what Raj says; he is a crooked businessman, he seem to have got a reduced sentence and may be planning for an early release.

  8. Devinda Fernando Says:

The Tragic tale of Raj Rajaratnam’s life… He was the LTTE’s biggest financier, engaging in criminal activity in the way that seems synonymous with LTTE supporting Tamils these days. His billions in wealth in the USA will evaporate after his time in jail; the numerous fines, penalties, civil lawsuits and seized assets will leave him penniless by the time he gets out of jail. And if he’s not prosecuted under the US Terrorism laws as a financier of a Terrorist organization then in 11 years when he gets out of Federal prison he will get on the first plane and fly first class to Colombo where he will live here in luxury being that he has Millions of Dollars invested in the Sri Lankan stock market. The Irony of it all… A man who funded the destruction of Sri Lanka finds it his only viable sanctuary and chance at a decent life after prison…
