March 13thƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ 2012
The leader of the opposition Ranil Wickremasinghe in all probabilities has been tolerated in his status as an MP and leader of the opposition purely through the democratic process and none other. A chameleon who changes colours to suit his circumstancial needs, accused of beingƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ an apparent formerƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ colluder with the now defunct LTTEƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  as well as many of Sri lanka’s adversaries towards his own advantage and one of the biggest political bunglers in the history of Sri Lankan politics heƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ is most unfortunately still around in Sri Lanka’s political arena doing his thing which oftentimes is an embarrasment not only to the political party he clings toƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ (by virtue of partisan support of some whose futures depend on him) but also to his country. An enigma that surely needs sorting out in the best interests of Sri Lanka andƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the sooner the better!
HisƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ decision to remain noncommittal on the current United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) sessions in Geneva, where the government is battling a US-led resolution, looms large towards his frailities. ItƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ is something which exposes the man’s true nature and when the term “surreptitiousƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ pretenderƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ who has enjoyed political privileges for too long with his glib tongue and crafty manoeuvering” as someone cared to call him itƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ does seem to ring true with no reservations.
To the contrary, whenƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ UNP Deputy Leader Sajith PremadasaƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  a man who in the eyes of many analysts is the more deserving to be leader of the Opposition and someone who seems to portray astute vision towards the future of the UNP and perhaps the best interests of his motherlandƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ says that ” there is absolutely no basis for Western efforts to confront Sri Lanka over alleged accountability issues” the writings on the wall about the disparity between Wickremasinghe and himselfƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ about who has the proper direction in an unfetterd sense of patriotism and righteousness where the former has revealed his transparencies which need to be put into perspective and probably taken to task, something which seems long overdueƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ .
The Deputy UNPƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ leader PremadasaƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ in a public statementƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ posted by the Sun newsƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ media hasƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ said that”those pursuing Sri Lanka on the human rights front had conveniently forgotten that they could intervene in affairs of a member state only when international peace and security were threatened. In fact Sri Lanka had eradicated a terrorist group, which posed a grave danger to global security. The global community should appreciate Sri LankaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s efforts against terrorism, particularly in the wake of 9/11″ where perhaps the leader of the opposition needs to take an object lesson about the realities involving the UNHRC which is becoming more and more visible as a global conspiracy against Sri Lanka instigated by the Tamil diaspora which at the end of it all will probably be more contentious to the realities which are supported by the more rational elements in the international community as well as world leaders who see the importance of the logic of Mr Premadasa who makes sense as opposed to the rantings of Wickremasinghe which bear no importanceƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  at the best of timesƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  and realistically his attitude is more insignificant rather than carrying anyƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ relevance to the issue at hand yet the principle involved needing exposure based on his status as leader of the Opposition!ToƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ maintain ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ a strong pro-Sri LankaƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ stance over unsubstantiated allegations made by interested parties in colaboration with falsified evidence which have to date never been proven or strong enough to be taken up in any international tribunal on the basis that Sri Lanka isƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ a sovereign country whose sovereignity,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ territorial integrityƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  and political independence which cannot be undermined on the pretext of protecting human rights is the theme which fortifies Mr Premadasa’s rationale and outspokenness and seems far too complex for the seemingly feeble minded Wickremasinghe to comprehend and towards where his loyalties by rights needs to be logically. ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

It becomes plain from many perspectivesƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ in the face of the Premadasa vs Wickremasinghe diversities that ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the UNPƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ is indeedƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ sharply divided over the responses needed towards the UNHRC sessions in Geneva issue, with those behind the former, callingƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  for support of the Government of Sri Lanka in opposingƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the abhorrently lopsided accusations projected by Sri Lanka’s enemiesƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  and done blatantly at a time when there are glaringly shameful issues involving many of the sources who seem to be so insistent about Sri Lanka’s aberrations when they themselves are guilty as leading world nations of painfully visible excesses of the same accusations levelled at Sri Lanka and not involving their sovereignities nor territorial integrities. Sadly innocents suffer as a consequence. It is an affront to justice and the maintenance of world peace albeit motivated more by greed for resources, territory and a power drivenƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ madness which shows no mercy for the consequences which could eventually endanger the very existence of the world ! The Wickremasinghe rationaleƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ (if it can be called that !) to the contrary seems blinkered at best on the issue andƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  whether it be at an MP’s cricket match or on the floor of the parliamentƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  his responses are more willy nilly and insignificant of late relative to the intelligence required it needs to be emphasized.

The strongest point about Mr.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ PremadasaƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ towardsƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  his dedications and patriotism as a true son of Sri LankaƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ shows whenƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ maintaining ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ that ” he couldnƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t keep quiet when an obvious attempt was being made to destabilise the country and cause chaos”ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  he said while also quipping thatƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ “ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the Rajapaksa administration had failed to alleviate the sufferings of the poor due to negligence, waste and corruption. Those struggling to make ends meet hadnƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t received any tangible assistance, though the war had ended almost three years back,.” which of course seems more tongue in cheek rather than realistic given the financial challenges the nation faces during the process of rebuilding after a devastating, nearlyƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ three decades long internal armed insurrection and perhaps typically opposition motivated..

Coming back to reality he has refered to the US led resolution,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ as one which has noƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ moral or legal justification for any country or a group of countries towards intervention in Sri Lanka. Very courageously andƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  more importantly, very correctly he has maintained thatƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  “Sri LankaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s war against terrorism should not be a political issue, whatever the differences they had with the government. The country had no option but to defeat the LTTE through military means as it rejected efforts made by successive governments to settle the national issue, he said. The LTTE quit the negotiating table in April 2003 after six rounds of talks at various overseas venues. Only the LTTE could have avoided war. The majority of those upset about Sri LankaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s success did nothing to avert war. None of them at least bothered to issue press statements condemning the LTTE for withdrawing from the Norwegian-led peace process in April 2003 or opposed the use of children as cannon fodder.”

Bravo !ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ to his courageous stance where his vis a vis compatriot and “comradeƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  in politics”Wickremasinghe has had little more than apathy to offerƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ inƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ what apears to be either an” I dont know and I don’t care” response or “Well !ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ I am not going to get involved in what may come back to haunt be or jeapordise my ratings with my western allies” scenario.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Regardless of which it may be, the responses truly seem wimpishƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ where Mr Wickremasinghe should get a life and perhaps quit politics!

    Dear Sunil Kuma!
Thanks so much for exposing a leader who managed to give 2/3 of the country to LTTE & its supporters, just stay as Prime Minister.

First, in a predominently Buddhist country, there should never be a leader who is non-buddhist. This creates problems at the outset.., His backers are most dienachanted Tamils, LTTE supporters & elite of Colombo city. His orientation is also questioned by his own MPs.

I feel it is time he packed it in and give someone like Sujith Premadasa to be the leader of UNP. At least he is patriotic & supports Mother lanka.

Very valuable article, and hope many will read & respond. Just expressing my views as EXPAT still concerned & value what is happening to our beloved Motherland………~ Gammunu, Retd Engr-Canada

UNP has only a past and it does not have any present.

UNP needs new leadership and external blood. I don’t think anyone at present in UNP is suitable or capable of leading the country.

Father was a president or sitting in the parliament for decades should not be a qualification to lead the country.

None of the parties have ways to promote capable budding leaders to the top. One disadvantage may be highly corrupt nature of these parties. Lower ranks votes for the leader if they are bribed with future minister posts. As UNP does not have many seats, it is easy to cheat them with minister posts.

At least RanilW can leave his legacy if he brings the party to right tracks before the next election. I am sure, he himself knows that.
