Haj Festival – Avoid cow slaughter, Muslim clerics tell Muslims of India

Lucknow: In keeping with the city’s famous communal unity, Muslim clerics here have urged the community to avoid cow slaughter on the occasion of Eid ul Adha aka Bakarid as a gesture of tolerance and respect to the sentiments of the Hindu brethren.Bakarid celebrates is all about making sacrifices and falls this year on Saturday,October 26.

In a press release,vice president of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board and noted prominent Shia cleric Maulana Syed Kalbe Sadiq said,”We live in a country where Hindu brethren are in majority and their religious sentiments should be respected. It is my appeal to Muslims to restrain completely from sacrificing cow on the Eid-ul-Azha.”

He informed that after India got independence,a fatwa prohibiting sacrificing cows was issued for Shia Muslims.Community members should follow the fatwa, he said.

Meanwhile,in another development,nayab mohatamim (pro vice-chancellor ) of Islamic Seminary Dar-ul-Uloom Deoband Maulana Abdul Khaliq Madrasi voiced similar opinion.In states where cow slaughter is banned,one should avoid sacrificing the animal, he told the local press.Maulana Madrasi said this had been published by Dar-ul-Uloom in the book related to issues pertaining to sacrifice.

He said while literate classes try to follow advice of the Islamic institutions on the issue of sacrificing cow,awareness was lacking among the illiterate class.He said followers of Hindu religion revere the cow, thus,Muslims should avoid sacrificing the animal. TNN
