Emergency meeting of Judges and Hulftsdorp Coup !

Chief Justice Shiranie B convened a special meeting for all District Judges and Magistrates on Monday 3rd. Everyone including the MinisterƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ had been kept in the dark about this decision. The question is why the CJ called for thisƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ suddenƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ meeting when there is a controversy between the Parliament and the Judiciary. The Judges and Magistrates had to attendƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ leaving their official duties behind. Because of the meetinng Courts had not functioned on Monday. This hadƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ caused further inconvenience to the people who linger for years until their cases are heard. But the CJ is not the least concerned about the interests of the public as long asƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ her interests are safeƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ and she is covered.
Legal experts have argued that such meetings are called only in emergencies. So many have wondered why CJ called for this meeting when the PSC is scheduled to meet on Tuesday 4th. On the other hand, there is also a move by the opposition members of the PSC for a postponement of the PSC meetings by one month. May be they want to give the Supreme Court breathing space to make a decision about the PSC. Having lost the war, now groups both foreign and local are trying to further their ends by other means. They are now using the ‘Black Coats’ to target the govt.
With regard to the PSC the Speaker had already made a statement saying, “…This is a matter which falls exclusively within the power of Parliament’s authority..” Then, former CJ Sarath Silva had said, “…There is nothing wrong with the case. CJ or no CJ one cannot have improprieties and that is fundamental. That is why I have no objection to the case. The Judiciary cannot issue writs against Parliament which is the highest body in the land…”
