OVERVIEW
Historic records attest that, since 230 BCE, Sri Lanka was invaded as much as seventeen times by South Indian Dravidian Tamil-speaking invaders. These Tamil invaders ruthlessly wiped out entire Sinhala villages along their way to Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, the royal capitals of the ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Sinhala Buddhist kingdoms of the past. They ransacked and plundered these prosperous capitals and the Sinhala people were subject to untold atrocities. They killed Sinhala Kings or forced them to retreat to the south of the island. At different times during the history of this nation, some South Indian Dravidian invaders sat on the Sinhala throne and ruled over the Sinhala people for about 170 years.
Tamil threat to the Sinhala Buddhist kingdoms had become very real in the 5th and 6th centuries CE, when three Hindu empires in Southern IndiaƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ – Pandya, Pallava, and Chola, were becoming more assertive and the Tamil ethnic and religious consciousness began to mature. At this time, owing to the pressure by Hinduism, the influence of Buddhism was rapidly receding in India and BuddhismƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ was becoming vulnerable. The ruthless Chola, Pallava and Pandya TamilsƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ undertook repeated invasions of our island at this time, and became a serious threat to our Sinhala Buddhist rulers.
The history of Tamil involvement in our country from early times until today, is marked by excessive violence and deceit. Some Tamils came to our country as mercenaries. Propensity to criminal activities is not a recent development among the Tamils for it has prevailed from ancient times. This makes one think whether violence has become a part of the mental and psychological structure of the average Tamil.
The island experienced terror in its worst forms, never known before in our land, especially ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ during the invasions and rule of the Dravidian Kalinga Magha and in recent years under the ruthless Tamil terrorist Prabakaran. The crime-prone rule of Kalinga Magha prevailed for 21 years during the 13th century. After the 13th century, the Tamil Pandyan and Tamil Nayakka intrusion into Sinhala royal families led to our traditional royalty falling into disarray, and the eventual decline of the stability and magnanimity of the Sinhala Buddhist nation.
Whether the offensive and violent attitudes of Tamils towards Sri Lanka have changed in recent times is questionable when one considers the outrageous public pronouncements of racist Tamil leaders such as Jayalalitha of Tamil Nadu – the Homeland of Tamils. In May 2009, this dim-witted woman called for Indian troops to invade Sri Lanka to help create a Tamil state. This is the Chief Minister of Tamilnadu, and Leader of the largest Tamil political party of India.
FIRST TAMIL INVADERS ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” SENA AND GUTTIKA (22 Years)
The first invasion around 230 BCE, was by two brothers who ruled on the Sinhala throne over the Sinhala people for 22 years till they were killed by a Sinhala prince from the south. The first reported account of South Indian Tamil rule in Sri Lanka was during the period 237-215 BCE by the horse dealers. Sena and Guttika. who killed the Sinhala king Suratissa and usurped the Sinhala throne and occupied the throne at AnurƒÆ’-¾ƒ”š‚dhapura for twenty two years. In 215 BCE, Sinhala king Asela, the brother of SurastisssaƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ and brother of King Devanampiyatissa regained the kingdom from Tamil invaders and ruled from 215 to 205 BCE.
TAMIL ELARA (44 Years)
Ten years later, a Chola Tamil South Indian invader named Elara, came and slew the legitimate Sinhala king Asela, and ruled Rajarata from Anuradhapura. He held the Sinhala throne for 44 years (205-161 BCE). This Tamil invader was slained by Prince Dutugemunu and the entire country was unified under his rule.
WAR WAGED BY SEVEN TAMILS
Valagambahubecame the king of Anuradhapura Kingdomin103 BCE.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Five months after becoming king, he was overthrown by a Tamil invasion from South India. Seven Tamils waged war against king Valagambahu – Pulahatta(or Pulahatha), Bahiya, Panaya Mara,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Pilaya Mara, Dathiya. In 88 BCE these Tamils were deposed by Valagambahuending Tamil rule. Valagambahu I (89-77) BCE restored the Dutugamunu dynasty.
SIX PANDYAN TAMIL INVADERS (428 – 452 CE)
Six Pandyan Tamil invaders ruled the country during the twenty-four year period from 428 to 452 CE. They were – Pandu ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” 428-433, Parinda ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” 433, Khuda Parinda ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” 433-449, Tiritara ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” 449, Dathiya – 449-452. Sinhala King Dhatusena defeated the last two of these Tamil usurpers and ruled our nation from 452 to 470 CE.
PANDYAN AND CHOLA INVASIONS IN THE 9TH CENTURY CE
By the middle of the ninth century, the Pandyans had risen to a position of ascendancy in Southern India. The Pandyan king with a ruthless armyƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ invaded and ransacked Anuradhapura during the period 846 to 866 CE.
TAMIL VIOLENCE LED TO ABANDONMENT OF ANURADHAPURA -THE ROYAL CAPITAL OF 1400 YEARS
In 993 CE, the Chola Emperor Raja Raja-Iinvaded Sri Lanka, forcing the then Sri Lankan ruler Mahinda VƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ (917-1007) to flee to the southern part of the country. Rajendra I, the son of Raja raja -I, launched a massive invasion of Southern Lanka and Mahinda V was captured and taken prisoner to India where he died in the year 1037. ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Mahinda V, was the last Sinhala king to rule from Anuradhapura.
These Cholas ransacked the city of Anuradhapura and moved the capital to Polonnaruwa. ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The abandonment of Anuradhapura, one of the most magnificentƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Buddhist cities of the world at that time, was brought about by the violent actions of ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ South Indian Tamils.
TAMIL PLUNDER OF ANURADHAPURA
Rajadhiraja Chola II(1166-1178C.E.) who was a Cholaking in India had serious disputes with the Pandyans and the Sinhalarulers on the opposite side, bringing untold misery to both sides. This civil war that resulted between the Cholas and Pandyan Tamils brought power to Pandyans resulting in invasions and plunder of Anuradhapura.
CHOLAS OUSTED FROM POLONNARUWA
Vijayabahu- IƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ (1045-1095 CE) ousted the Chola Tamils from Anuradhapura and regained the Rajarata Sinhala kingdom. He chose Polonnaruwa as his capital. It is also significant to note that the Tamil soldiers who surrendered were maintained by the Sinhala king who also took action to protect Hindu DevaleƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s that had been built by the Tamils. Leelawathi was the chief queen of King Vijayabahu, but as his second wife, he also married a princess from Kalinga Royal Family. From her he had a son named Vikrama Bahu and a daughter named Ratnavali. His sister, Mitta, was given in marriage to a Pandyan Prince who had three sons, the eldest of whom named Manabharana, became the husband of Ratnavali and their son was Parakrama Bahu. I.
Parakrama Bahu- IƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ (1140-1173 CE) ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” Grandson of Vijaya Bahu- I, a Prince of Royal Blood, of Pandyan descent, as the son of Manabharana and Vijaya BahuƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s sister Mitta. Parakrama Bahu- I became King in 1140 and reigned for thirty three years leaving behind no heir to the throne.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ This led to the nomination of Vijayabahu ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…”II as king (1173-1174 CE) who was king Parakrama BahuƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s sister’s son.
Nissanka MallaƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ (Kirti Sri Nissanka)(1174-1183 CE) was a Kalinga Prince and his reign was followed by a period of utmost political instability resulting in downfall of the Rajarata kingdom and the former glory of Polonnaruva.
TAMIL INVASIONS DURING POLONNARUWA ERA
During the reign of Queen LilavatiƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ (1197-1198 CE) ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” the Widow of King Parakrama Bahu ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” a South Indian Pandyan Tamil invader deposed her and became the king and ruled for three years.
KALINGA MAGHA INVASION (1201-1222 CE)
In 1201 Sri Lanka was invaded by Magha a Dravidian Kalinga prince who took the king captive, tortured him and robbed him of all riches and ruled for 21 years until 1222 CE. The ferocity, cruelty and barbarism of Tamils were unprecedented during this time. They ransacked the kingdom, killed man and beast, broke images, destroyed temples, viharas, tortured the rich of their wealth and gave land to Cholas. The BuddhaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s Tooth and Bowl relics were hidden by them. Kalinga Magha tyrannized the inhabitants of Raja Rata and extended his invasion to the south of the country. Here, being counter-attacked by the Sinhala people led by king Vijayabahu ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…”III (1222-1226) of Maya Rata, this Tamil terrorist was compelled to retreat and was killed on his way back to India.
INSECURITY AND RELOCATION OF THE NATIONƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢S CAPITALS
Vijayabahu ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…”III (1222-1226 CE) who expelled Magha the Tamil invaders from Maya Rata, moved the seat of government to Dambadeniya.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ He had two sons named Parakramabahu and Bhuvaneka Bahu.
Panditha Parakrama Bahu- II(1226-1257 CE) ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” the eldest son of Vijaya Bahu- III became the king after his father Vijaya Bahu- III. ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The new king was known as Panditha Parakramabahu – II, on account of his great learning. Chandra Bhanu the Tamil, who claimed to be a ruler of Jaffna, engaged in war with Panditha Parakrama Bahu and was defeated mercilessly.
Although Panditha Parakramabahu was crowned at Polonnaruwa he ruled at Dambadeniya. He reigned as king over the whole of Lanka for thirty five years and upon his death was succeeded by his son, Vijaya Bahu who ruled for two years and political instability followed with several kings who ruled for short periods of time.
VIJAYA BAHU IV, ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ 1257-1259 CE ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” Eldest son of Panditha Parakrama Bahu IIƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ He was treacherously murdered in 1259 by one of his Army Generals named Mitta who ascended the throne in 1259, who was killed.
BHUVANEKA BAHU I, ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ 1259-1270 ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” Brother of Vijaya Bahu IV (1257-1259 CE) ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” During the early part of his reign Lanka was repeatedly invaded by Indian Tamil forces. He ruled initially from Dambadeniya and later moved his capital to Yapahuva in 1272. The king brought the Sacred Tooth relic of the Buddha from Dambadeniya and enshrined it in a special palace in Yapahuwa. ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The Tamil Pandyans of South India invaded Yapahuwa following the death of King Bhuvenakabahu in 1284. They captured the Tooth Relic and took it away to South India. Following its capture, Yapahuwa was abandoned. (The Tooth relic was recovered from India in 1288 and placed in Polonnaruwa by king Parakkramabahu-III who ruled from 1287 to 1293).
King Buwaneka Bahu ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…”I, died at Yapahuva in the eleventh year of his reign. The life of Yapahuva as the capital of Lanka lasted only until ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the death of King Bhuvaneka Bahu I, when it was subjugated and despoiled by another Tamil invasion.
REPEATED INVASION BY TAMIL PANDYANS
CHANDRA BHANU 1270 CE ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” captured Yapahuva but was deprived of his victory by the Pandya Emperor Kulasekera.
PARAKRAMA BAHU III 1270-1275 ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” Nephew of Buvaneka Bahu I, son of Vijaya Bahu IV ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” His mother was a sister of Kulasekera. He was established as King of Polonnaruwa. During his reign the island was invaded by a Pandyan army led by one Chakravarti. The invaders succeeded in capturing the forces of Yapahuva and carrying off the sacred Tooth-Relics. However, King Parakramu bahu III succeeded in bringing it back to Lanka and placed the relics in Polonnaruwa where he reigned.
BHUVANEKA BAHU II 1275-1277 ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” Son of Buvaneka Bahu I, cousin of Parakrama Bahu IIIadvanced to Polonnaruwa, slew Parakrama in battle and brought the Tooth-Relics to Kurunegala. Kulasekera, the Pandya Emperor, came himself to avenge the death of his nephew Parakrama Bahu III. Bhuvaneka bahu died fighting heroically.
PARAKRAMA BAHU IV 1277-1301 CE ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” son of Buvanekka Bahu IIƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ proclaimed himself as sovereign against the Tamil Pandya emperor Kulasekera. He ruled from Kurunegala.

SL has only ONE ENEMY – Tamil nationalists. Not all Tamils but Tamil nationalists (those who believe there was a Tamil Homeland in SL).
BUT in the past we got rid of them. Nowadays the leaders are not so capable.

yes we must re-iterate history which was buried by politicians for their advantage. every sri Lankan including tamils must know the atrocities committed by dravidians. we fought them from 2 bc up to 2009. we will continue to fight them. this is not about inflaming racial hatred but to be ‘conscious’ of the facts of history. tamils too need to know the facts and history should be taught in schools, whether its palatable to one section or not.
we need to get rid of all these corrupt politicians to establish a country run on principles and not based on this system of hypocritical democracy and vote!

The Tamils were never allowed to have a long lasting state within the island nation by the locals. They always destroyed it and the leaders were killed or left the island nation. Theose who stayed integrated with the locals. But all this changed after they came with the Britsh as Sepoys and Coolies. In the old days transport between Indian subcontinent and the island was difficult, but by the time the British and the Indian colonial parasites started building the transport accros the oceans have become easy.

Thank you Dr. D.H. This is an interesting article and an eye opener to most ignorant and idiotic politicians like Rajitha, Athaudha S. and the rest. They have been lulled into complacency and think that we will be safe for ever.
I would like to put my two cents worth as follows:
During the British colonial period our security was provided by them and we did not have to worry as India was also under them. The moment they left the problem started. Prabhakaran was only the first person to have a go. There will be many more Chandra Banus and Kulasekaras to come and try their luck here as happened during the 2000 years before the colonials came. At the height of recent terrorist problem I have heard many of our women folk lamenting and saying “isn’t there any nation who will come and help us”.
Perhaps they were feeling helpless as we did not have a worthwhile leader and perhaps Ranil did what he did as a last resort.
Are we going to create the same situation without a proper control in the north?. we cannot expect lot of help from China and even Russia. Although both these countries are backing Syria, that country is in a big turmoil even though Russia is just next door. West is trying hard to corner China again and perhaps destabilize it. If they become weak due to any internal problem we will be fully exposed to TN which will have the central government backing. Our leaders need to have that scenario in mind.

Tamil Nadu is USING Sri Lanka as a venting place for their caste/poverty problems/anger. Vested interests are USING the ongoing events past & present in Sri Lanka for their own purposes.
Today’s problem in Lanka appears to be the Labor Supply/Needs. Modernise/Mechanise existing Labor. Train existing citizens of Lanka for skills needed. Let our people work for Sri Lanka, not go abroad for jobs. Pay them as well as possible and take care of their Needs. Do not overly depend on existing Tamil Labor, and zero dependency on new Tamil Labor from TN.
Some facts :
* Sri Lanka buys about 40% of goods from Tamil Nadu from the total purchased from India. About 70% of the pharmaceutical products purchased from India are from Tamil Nadu.
* Tamil Nadu fishermen have poached millions of $$s worth of fish from Lanka’s seas.
* Tamil Nadu leaders have encouraged the Separatism of Sri Lanka and also vilifying of Lanka abroad.
* Tamil Nadu appeared to be attempting to annex parts (K’tivu island, N&E) or whole of Lanka as a portion of Greater Tamil Nadu.
* Tamil Nadu appears to have a endless supply of Tamils to unload via the Tamil Nadu Refugee Camps.
* Will Tamil Nadu take back all the Tamil illegal migrants in Lanka and also close down the Refugee camps ?
Parliament ought to careful assess these events/facts and take the necessary steps to avoid future strife with Tamil Nadu.

Sri Lanka was under threats through out it’s history. But the modern threats are serious. the reason is religious conversion in Sri Lanka slow and spread like a cancer. So, we don’t know until we are close to the death.
The most reason island wide census proved it. Now, we are at a breaking point. If we don’t resist and do not the turn around it we become another KERALA where Hindu majority becomes a minority and Christian and Muslim minorities run all the affairs for them and they call it a socialist Govt.
See none of the “democratic” govts of the west don’t allow that. In there, Christian whites run all the affairs when it is comes to governance. that happens even at the municipal level and not only at the central govt level. Minority participation is minimal and negligible.

The invasions of various Tamil kingdoms to empires is well known as the ruins of Anuradapura show but at the very same time none of the invaders were able to permanently annex Sri Lanka or any part of it. Every single invasion was eventully thwarted by the Singhalese Kings to the extant that King Parakramabahu not only defeated and chased the Chola garrison but chased them deep into Tamil Nadu. History again rhymes (not repeats) as a new avatar of Tamil aggression was witnessed in the civil war for the sole purpose of splitting the nation and again as in history the Tamils were defeated and their quest for Eelam destroyed.

But some so called new patriots helped CHANDRIKA to divide the country and went against Dinesh.

‘India lags in reducing infant mortality rate’

The likes of Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have overtaken India in reducing the rate of mortality among children under the age of five (U5MR), according to a report released by UNICEF in Chennai on Friday. The ‘State of the World’s Children 2013’ ranks India at 49th place out of 195 countries in U5MR, which is a crucial indicator of health and well-being of children.
This year’s report, which is based on data from 2011, puts U5MR in India at 61 deaths out of 1,000 live births.
The U5MR for boys was 59 per 1,000 while the corresponding figure for girls was 64. The infant mortality rate, which measures mortality among children below 1 year was 47 per 1,000 live births.
The report also assessed other issues including education and marriage among children.
In terms of education among youth (15-24 years), the report points out that 88 per cent young men and 74 per cent of young women are literate.
Interestingly, net attendance ratio in secondary schools in India was as low as 59 per cent in males and 49 per cent in females in 2007-11.
At primary school level, net attendance ratio was significantly higher at 85 per cent in males and 81 in females, thus pointing at increasing school absenteeism and dropout rates at secondary level.
As per data from 2002-2011, about 12 per cent of children in India are child labourers while 18 per cent are married by the age of 15. By the age of 18, 47 per cent of India’s youth are married.
Five per cent of adolescents (aged 10-19) males and 30 per cent of adolescent females are married or in union. Out of this, 57 percentage of adolescent males justified wife beating.
Meanwhile, birth registration in India was as low as 41 per cent in 2005-11. This accounts to 59 percentage of registration in urban areas and 35 percent in rural areas.

Sri Lanka’s Tamil alliance decides to boycott parliamentary select committee on ethnic problem

June 29, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s major Tamil party, Tamil National Alliance (TNA), has decided not to participate in the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) appointed to find solutions to the national issue.
The TNA took this decision when the Representatives of the party met in Colombo today (29) to discuss their participation in the PSC proposed by the government.
Representatives of the main constituent political parties of the TNA, Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK), People’s Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE), Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) and the Eelam People’s Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF) attended the meeting.
The Speaker of parliament appointed 19 members to the PSC chaired by the Leader of the House, Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva.
Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has also decided not to participate in the PSC and the main opposition United National Party is awaiting the response from the President to a letter sent by the party leader setting party’s conditions.

Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa has complained to his mobile phone service provider that his phone is being tapped by an organised team with the intention of gathering national security secrets, according to a newspaper report.
A special investigation that looked into this complaint has revealed that those behind it were linked to a foreign mission in Colombo as well as a powerful foreign spy agency, our sister newspaper Irida Lankadeepa reports today in its lead story.
The report adds:
In addition to tapping the phone of the Defence Secretary, the phones of several other VIPs were being tapped by the same group, which possesses sophisticated phone-tapping equipment, the investigations have revealed.
The mobile-telecom service provider has also begun a probe to ascertain if national security was being compromised and if there is an attempt to tamper with the telecommunication system of the country by those engaged in wiretapping.

NPC polls: SLMC to go it alone

KANDY – Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) will contest the forthcoming Northern Provincial Council (NPC) election on its own.
SLMC Leader and Justice Minister Rauf Hakeem said in Kandy yesterday (30) that his party intended to go it alone at the NCP polls scheduled for September.
Minister Hakeem was responding to a question by the media, while addressing a meeting of the SLMC political activists in Kandy at the party branch office at Katugastota Road.
Minister Hakeem said that there was no need to be excited about the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on the national question as several political groups including the TNA, the UNP and the JVP had already announced that they would not participate in it.
In the address to the SLMC gathering, Hakeem said that during the on-going debate over the 13th Amendment, sinister attempts were being made by some groups and individuals to pull the SLMC out of the government.
But, the SLMC was not prepared to destablise the government, the SLMC leader said.”Whatever the critics of the 13th Amendment may say I strongly believe that President Mahinda Rajapaksa, with his experience of 40 years, will make a reasonable decision on the matter, Hakeem said, adding that the SLMC made independent decisions and acted accordingly.

Sri Lankan Minister will quit government if provincial councils abolished

July 01, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s veteran leftist Minister of State Languages and National Integration Vasudeva Nanayakkara announced today that he would leave the government if it takes steps to abolish the powers of the provincial council system.
He said that he could agree to the abolition of powers of the provincial councils to merge, but the proposed amendment to make the nationally important laws approved only by the general majority of the councils needed to be taken up at the parliamentary select committee to amend the Constitution, he said.
Addressing a press briefing held in Colombo today, MP Nanayakkara slammed the idea circulated by some other members of the government that provincial councils are a “white elephant”.
He argued that the cabinet of 95 ministers was more a white elephant than provincial councils.
He said that mere 7% of the cost of provincial councils is spent for maintaining them. The majority of the expenses of the provincial councils are for sectors like education and health which the government will have to bear in case the provincial councils are abolished.

It is time India corrects its Sri Lanka policy

It is impossible to believe that the forced withdrawal of two Sri Lankan army officers from the Defence Service Staff College in Wellington in Tamil Nadu will not affect ties between New Delhi and Colombo.
No self respecting nation likes it when its military officers sent for routine training are told to go home – due to the host country’s domestic politics. Knowing the animosity in Tamil Nadu to the Sri Lankan military, New Delhi should have either not invited the two officers to Wellington or, having done so, should have stood by them until the training got over.
Yes, in a federal set up, the central government should listen to even conflicting issues from states. But no government can endlessly allow itself to be blackmailed into submission just because Tamil Nadu politicians who failed to drive sense into the LTTE when it was alive and kicking have now decided to avenge its defeat with a sweeping I-hate-Sri-Lanka policy.
The anti-Colombo sentiments in Tamil Nadu, fuelled by both the ruling and opposition parties, have led to attacks on innocent Sri Lankans who cannot be blamed for that country’s military or foreign policy. This has fuelled anti-India feelings in Sri Lanka. If the situation continues without check, the time is not far when Indian interests in Sri Lanka could seriously get hurt.
The only winner in such an ugly situation will be the pro-LTTE political forces in Tamil Nadu and elsewhere who still cannot get over the fact that a militant group they thought could never lose has been vanquished.
There is no doubt that innumerable innocent Tamils got killed in the final stages of the war against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. But the LTTE was primarily to blame for forcing thousands of Tamil civilians to move into the battle zone – in the hope that their presence would prevent its own doom.
Having crushed the LTTE in 2009, the Sri Lankan leadership must have gracefully admitted to the death of innocents and announced a generous compensation and rehabilitation policy. But having claimed that no innocents were targeted, Colombo has got caged in a situation from where there is no easy escape, leading to repeated unpleasant international censures.
But that is only one aspect of a larger – and complex – story.
On their part, Tamil Nadu leaders, who otherwise preside over the destiny of millions, made no effort to inject sense into the LTTE leadership to call off the war when there was time. In any case, the LTTE didn’t care two hoots for Tamil Nadu politicians – except if they contributed to its war efforts. Forget sound advice, some in Tamil Nadu urged Velupillai Prabhakaran to fight on till the Congress gets ousted by the BJP in the 2009 Lok Sabha election. That didn’t happen, and the LTTE crashed.
While the war was on, India turned down Sri Lankan requests to build the Palaly air base in Jaffna (by attaching conditions Colombo couldn’t meet) and a port at Hambantota because the Congress-led government was wary of rubbing Tamil Nadu the wrong way. Now Sri Lankan military officers invited to Wellington have been told to leave – and not just once.
It is time Prime Minister Manmohan Singh takes a re-look at India’s Sri Lanka policy. India can’t have the cake and eat it too. If India wants to advice Sri Lanka on its ethnic policy, then basic courtesies will have to be extended to Colombo. India cannot view Sri Lanka solely from the Tamil Nadu prism.
If attacking innocent Sri Lankans or asking their military officers to go home is right because of what happened in the war, then India should be ready to face similar music when its military officers go abroad. After all, have there been no rights violations in places like Kashmir?

Daya Master is STILL SPOUTING Eelamist rhetoric, and the GOSL is trying to field him as an SLFP CAndidate in the PC Elections.
To be PALATABLE to Northern PC residents …. he has to support Eelamist goals (See my last post on Daya Master).
To be PALATABLE to the SLFP …. he has to WEAR an SLFP sheepskin.
If he gets elected, which man will emerge? Another Douglas Devananda? The Eelamist or the SLFP-er? These are FUNDAMENTALLY INCOMPATIBLE positions.

Former LTTE spokesperson to prepare Sri Lanka ruling party manifesto for Northern PC poll

July 02, Colombo: The former LTTE Spokesperson Velayutham Dayanthi alias Daya Master will prepare Sri Lanka governing party’s manifesto for the Northern Provincial Council election.
Dayanithi plans to contest under the governing United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) for the Northern Provincial Council election.
He has told the media that candidates who are to contest under the UPFA including him have identified the issues faced by the Tamil people and the solutions to these issues would be included in the party’s election manifesto.
According to Dayanithi, Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) Leader, Minister Douglas Devananda and other governing party members representing all communities are in the process of preparing the manifesto along with him.

Former LTTE Women’s Political Wing leader to get membership in Sri Lanka Freedom Party

July 02, Colombo: The former Women’s Political Wing leader of the terrorist group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) Subramaniam Shivathavi alias Thamalini is to get the membership in the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), political sources say.
Sources also say that Thamalini will contest as a candidate of the SLFP to the upcoming Northern Provincial Council election.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa who is the leader of the SLFP is expected to approve Thamilini’s membership after his return to country.
Thamalini was arrested by state military when she was with the civilians in a refugee camp following the defeat of the LTTE. She was detained for a long time and released recently after a rehabilitation programme in Poonthottam Rehabilitation Camp in Vavuniya.

then Threaten, Invade and Occupy Sri Lanka under the guise of “Peacekeepers” when that terrorism is in FULL SWING, preventing Sri Lanka from defending itself against their terrorist surrogates,
then they CHANGE OUR CONSTITUTION and IMPOSE the 13th Amendment upon Sri Lanka at GUNPOINT to solve their own problems presumably to ensure “ethnic harmony” in Sri Lanka that they themselves disrupted,
then they allow that terrorism to GROW beyond their ability to control it,
then they declare victory and advance to the REAR back to India leaving Sri Lanka with their terrorist baby to feed,

Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa said today that Sri Lanka should not listen to India with regard to the implementation of the 13th Amendment as the national problem was inherently one that should be solved by Sri Lankans.
“We should not listen to India on this; this doesn’t meant that we lose the relationship we have with India. But if there is a problem it should only be solved by Sri Lankans and not India,” he said.
He said the national question should have a homegrown solution — and the debate about 13th Amendment should not affect the relations between the two countries.
“India is our friend and we need to continue the good relations. This should not be an issue to strain our relationship, and I’m of the view that India understands that. They should understand that this is inherently a Sri Lankan issue and we have to address it with a solution that we devise” he said,
Rajapaksa said the “alienation of provinces based on ethnicity” was not the solution to the ethnic issue.
“This is not the solution; and it has failed. There are Tamils living in all parts of the country and Muslims too — so what about them? How does the Provincial Council system solve their problems? I believe in the decentralisation of administration; but I don’t believe that areas should be demarcated according to ethnicity, religion, caste or creed. This country belongs to all Sri Lankans and we have to think in those terms,” he said. (Hafeel Farisz)

Sri Lankan Minister leaves for India to discuss changes to13th Amendment

July 04, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s Economic Development Minister and Senior Adviser to the President Basil Rajapaksa left for India Thursday to apprise high ranking officials of the Indian government on the Sri Lankan government’s stance on13th Amendment to the Constitution.
Minister Basil Rajapaksa is expected to inform the Indian officials of the government’s stance on police and land powers and the reasons behind that stance.
He will meet Indian External Affairs Minister Salman Kurshid and National Security Advisor Shivsankar Menan during his two day stay in India.
Cabinet Spokesman and Mass Media and Information Minister Keheliya Rambukwella at the cabinet press briefing held in Colombo today said the Sri Lankan government has informed India at diplomatic level on the proposed revisions to the 13th Amendment.
The Sri Lankan government is required to officially inform the Indian government of the intended changes to the 13th Amendment since India is also a partner of the agreement, according to Minister Rambukwella.
The 13th Amendment to the Sri Lankan constitution, which created the provincial council system in the island under the Indo-Lanka Accord in 1987 as a solution to devolve power, is found to be problematic under the current political situation.
Minister Rambukwella said although land and police powers were vested with the provincial councils by the 13th Amendment these powers have not been practically used by the provincial councils for over past 25 years. The Minister added that the government is considering to dilute those powers vested in the provincial councils.
