This is something that is very easy to make, and all concerned about eradication of Dengue, should start.  Also, “FLY PAPER ” too, do trap Mosquitos. It can be imported, or manufactured in Sri Lanka, by a business entrepreneur. He can be a millionaire overnight.  Government authorities should look into this suggestion very seriously. Good luck

Do It Yourself Home Mosquito Trap
Safety From Disease Begins At Home

mosquito-trap-500wMy ‘apologies’ to all branded insecticides in the marketplace but FIGHTING DENGUE MUST START AT HOME.It’s just a mix of water, brown sugar and yeast.

1. Cut a plastic bottle in half, keep both parts. Can be soft drink bottle.

2. Dissolve brown sugar in hot water and let it cool down to around 40C – room temperature (check using a thermometer). Pour into the lower portion of the bottle.

3. Add yeast to the sugar/water mixture (Carbon Dioxide will be formed and will attract the mosquitoes).

4. Cover the bottle with a dark wrap and insert the top portion upside down (like a funnel). Place it in a dark corner in your house.

5. In 2 weeks you will be surprised by the number of mosquitoes killed.

REPLACE THE SUGAR WATER & YEAST SOLUTION EVERY 2 WEEKS !

IT WAS I WHO SENT THIS ARTICLE TO THE LANKA WEB, BUT INADVERTANTLY, MY NAME HAS NOT BEEN REFLECTED. I SENT THIS BY EMAIL TO- HIS EXCELLENCY THE PRESIDENT, COMMANDERS OF ALL SECURITY FORCES, IGP etc.

I also suggested that “FLY PAPER” that also kills Mosquitos too, be imported, or manufactured by an enterprising entrepreneur, who could be a millionaire overnight.

THIS IS THE START OF THE END OF DENGUE.

ALL RECIPIENTS OF MY EMAIL PLEASE TAKE THIS SUGGESTION SERIOUSLY AND IMPLEMENT IT ASAP.

    Good work SW.

We should take this to the PEOPLE.

I wish killing mosque-itos was as easy!

  3. Susantha Wijesinghe Says:

Yes Lorenzo ! Please find a way to spread this news to every individual in the country. I also wrote to Shenali to spear-head this subject. I do hope that somebody will start the manufacture of “FLY PAPER “, that will also kill the mosquitos by their millions. Happy to be with you all in the Lanka Web.

  4. Nanda Says:

What is happening now is attracting mossies , giving them sweet to be happy only. Haven’t heard trapping yet, big talk only.

  5. Lorenzo Says:

Clever tactic. Mosquitos and other insects feeding on humans follow CO2 (breath out air).

It can REDUCE dengi, malayria, philaria, encephalitis (check spellings) and even iron deficiency – blood loss due to mosquito bites.

These problems affect TOURISM too. So it is best to control mosquitos.

    Nanda,

We will come to mosque-itos later. Tomorrow is the LAST FRIDAY before RAMADAN bombathlon. The religion of peace website expects this years Ramadan bombathlon to kill at least 23,000 people – mostly Muslims killing each other.

I’m sure there is FEAR in defence that mosque-itos might go crazy after Friday prayers. Troops should be deployed to Beruwela, Maradana, etc.

    SW,
    A word of caution:
CO2 is a health hazard and should not be inhaled as it is poisonous. We do not know how much of it is being released by the trap, it should depend on how much sugar and yeast is being used. Therefore I suggest that it should not be kept in a closed environment, such as a closed room. Best is to keep it in a living room. Dengue mosquitoes bite only during day time; it has been found in SL that they bite more during specific hours. Best is to get some advice from those who have used it before.

  7. Susantha Wijesinghe Says:

    ALOY !!
Not necessasarily to keep it in the bedroom in the night. It can be kept anywhere in the household. The concept here is to kill the mosquito. It can even be kept in the garden. So, even three or four of these traps will do the needful to kill the mosquitos. I know that Carbon Monoxide CO3, is very dangerous, that is the gas given out by a combustion engine. I believe CO2 is what we breathe out.. Will do some research on that.

The FLY PAPER can also be used. It is very simple to make:- Corn syrup and Brown Sugar mixed and heated up to a consistency that can be applied on Brown Paper strips, to hang. I would advice to add a little gum resin. IT WILL KILL MOSQUITOS AND FLIES BOTH.

Iam a Buddhist and Iam preaching to kill mosquitos. Iam doing it in good faith. I want to save the lives of Human beings, and little children who are exposed to this deadly mosquito. That is why the mosquito has to be got rid of. I hope the lords above will forgive me.

There is NO LEADER to give a start to this campaign. The President cannot do everything, while the Ministers and MPs are in blissful slumber, waiting for more Hossannas to fall into their homes. It is a difficult subject to take it to all the people at the same time, yet there has to be a start. I will put my thinking cap on and suggest a strategy to get started. Meanwhile, if anyone has an idea, please reflect it in this forum. I think the Minister of Health and Hospitals should give the lead. It may even be mind boggling for him too to find the START.

    SW,
Thank you for clarification. I think the trap should give out just the amount of co2 from human breath to deceive the mossies. That means you have to give the right concentration of the solution in the bottle (ie. amount of sugar and yiest and the size of the bottle. The best way to popularize is by putting it in local TV. I am sure TV stations would oblige if a request is made by a well meaning organization.

  9. Nanda Says:

    Susantha,
“Iam a Buddhist and I am preaching to kill mosquitos. I am doing it in good faith. I want to save the lives of Human beings, and little children who are exposed to this deadly mosquito. That is why the mosquito has to be got rid of. I hope the lords above will forgive me. ”

If you expect forgiving from a fictitious “Lord” you are not a Buddhist but a Muslim or Christian. According to your good faith, your future degree of suffering will be determined.
But if you work hard diligently as Buddha said you can get rid of suffering.
Buddha said “by protection oneself one protects the others and by protection others one protects oneself”
As you are trying to protect others from mosquitos, your are protecting yourself against mosquitos. That is all.
Therefore you should protect yourself from greater dangers than from mosquitos.
I am telling you this out of compassion.

Similar to Mossies, Mosquito breeding environment SHALL be destroyed , killing of endless mossies is not the answer anyway. That is why Black June is not the answer.
But what you said is correct. “There is NO LEADER to give a start to this campaign. The President cannot do everything, while the Ministers and MPs are in blissful slumber, waiting for more Hossannas to fall into their homes. “

  10. Nanda Says:

Note the stupid English grammar typing errors.
It should read “by protecting oneself one protects the others and by protecting others one protects oneself”

  11. Susantha Wijesinghe Says:

ALOY ! Good idea about Local TV. I wonder whether Lions in Sri Lanka would take a cue. I will try.

NANDA ! When I referred to Lords above, I referred to Lord Shiva, Lord Murugan and Lord Ganesh. I fervently believe in them. Please have my assurance that Iam neither Muslim nor Christian. Yet, I must tell you that I have Muslim Blood in me. You might be intrigued, just hold on. When I was at the Frazer Ward at the Kandy Hospital, long years back I got into a health condition and I had Blood Transfusion. The Nurse attending on me told me that the Blood was from a young Muslim boy, who had left this planet. Bless him, I survived.

Again, thanks for your compassion and concern about my protecting from greater dangers. Yes, Iam well protected. The subject here is Mosquitos and Dengue, and I have no wish to get into conflict with your point of view. Appreciate your compassion, once again.
