Way Forward : China-India-Russia strategic geopolitical alliance

Should the 3 powers of Asia combine to make a formidable global force? Its not a bad idea – in fact it’s an excellent idea and would provide Asia and inadvertently the world the balance of power and stability that is lacking. Against a declining West, Asia’s 3 formidable power houses are best placed to challenge USA’s supremacy but the only issue is India’s mixed signals and its colonial-servant attitude in bowing to Western dictates. Yet, given the current world scenarios, Russia, China and India should combine and together as a common block enforce their demands to their friend” the US and the West.

The triangular partnership was first mooted by former Russian PM Yevgeny Maximovich Primakov and today in the light of the West’s pursuance to militarily interfere citing humanitarian concerns should make the Asian giants realize the need to safeguard their interests (internal and external).

The power of the 3 nations combined is phenomenal. The 3 nations make up more than 40% of the world’s population and the significant rise in their economies would provide greater nation-to-nation links that would also entail a rise in the economic conditions of all Asian nations as well given that the nations still hold a wealth of natural resources that the West are desperate to take over.

The total area of the 3 nations is 29.96million sq.kim (22.5% of the total area of the world) – this clearly predicts potential human resources, huge potential of market and rich natural resources between them. China has common borders with Russia and India. If security poses a risk to the three nations individually once the three tie up to form a partnership the entire region will be protected. Russia can keep an eye on NATO while China can watch the USA. The 3 foreign ministers have already kick-started discussions and Sri Lanka must take every opportunity to encourage this partnership at even external ministry level.

As a possibly move towards that direction no sooner the President of China assumed office he headed to Russia to meet his counter part Putin. Symbolic meaning was that inspite of West’s relationship deteriorating China and Russia’s was not.

Crux of China’s relationship has always been not to be dependent on any single-nation source. It’s a lesson Sri Lanka simply ignores. Relationships with China means that while China assures a nation they can depend on China, China will seek trade where it is offered the best leverage. These are all hallmarks of straight-forward preconditions which Sri Lanka’s officials again lacks – though Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike managed not only to continue ties with India and Pakistan but had the greatest of relationships with China. The leaders today can certainly take a leaf or two from her book.

Russia and China are very clear about their common positions on the value of sovereignty in international affairs and China’s own choice of staying out of a countries internal affairs – in particular both will not allow Syria, North Korea and Iran from collapsing. These are clues as to why Sri Lanka needs to continue the ties with China and Russia and forge partnerships that compliments each others security concerns in the entire region.

Small as Sri Lanka is, Sri Lanka is the gateway to East from West and West from East it is thus in an enviable position.

If the West views Sri Lanka as a geopolitical tool – China, Russia and India’s views cannot be far different. The only problem is our leaders have yet to discover how to use our geopolitical advantage to Sri Lanka’s benefit and Governments continue to neglect the role of its Ports as a strategic logistical tool on all fronts. For starters corruption in these areas need to be seriously looked into from secretary level downward. It moots the need to perhaps consider amalgamating the Defense and External Ministries together given that national security and external affairs are complimentary and need to go hand in hand. Mr. Gomin Dayasri’s father, Mr. N Q Dias was the Secretary of both Defense and External Affairs under the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Government,.

Moreover, the Asian nations are beginning to see how the West is plotting to again plunder their nations. They have been quick to ponder over the establishing of a new international lending institution to challenge the IMF/World Bank global monopoly with one more suited for the developing world”.

The formation of BRICS – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa has come up with that alternative source of development fund. The BRICS nations have a foreign currency reserve of $4.4trillion and already trade between BRICS nations is about $282billion annually and the 5 nations together make up 17% of global trade.

There is also the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) – all 3 nations are very much involved in it. The more the threesome take a collective stand on international issues the influence of the West would be countered.

Then in comes the Ugly American – and India is offered permanent member status at the UN Security Council, aligning as America’s ally in Asia – when India is in Asia why would it want to aspire to be selected as an ally. It is India that should be picking its allies given that India is placed in Asia and not America. Then the warmth turns to arm twisting with threats of sanctions if India does not reduce oil imports from Iran. So the US is all out to turn India into another Japan and has to a great extent succeeded given that India was led by a foreigner inclined towards the West and its ideologies. With a nationalist Indian now in power, India needs to wake up and realize it is taking the baton towards the wrong direction and needs to refocus towards East.

The US visits are clear indications of how hard the US is lobbying to ensure India does not tilt towards China and Russia. Following visits of President Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary, 5 cabinet level US officials have arrived in India in 2012 itself signaling tremendous pressures upon India to turn West and not East. India did however under pressure cancel Walmarts plan to enter India – something Sri Lanka needs to also learn to do. Saying no is sometimes far better than saying yes and regretting later.

We have China and India both accelerating rapidly and Russia returning to the great power status it once held – there is no reason why the three cannot combine to make a formidable global force that would help protect themselves and their Asia neighbors. There is no reason why Sri Lanka should not align itself to this block given that we are an Asian nation.

The Russia-China-India strategic alliance is the best way forward for their own interests and that of the entire Asia region and even the world at large and Sri Lanka’s officials must encourage this at diplomatic levels.

I appreciate the writer’s view on the importance of the three Asian powers getting together to work on a common ground in terms of physical and economic security in order to keep the threats posed by the West away as they often meddle in the internal affairs of the countries in the region citing their definition of human rights and their so-called democracy. Human rights and democracy are just two of many excuses the West cite to interfere and invade into the third world countries whereas the reality is to carry out their own agenda of plundering the resources, and subjugating those countries who defy their dictates.

I think, along with the three countries, Pakistan should also join and not to be left out, as otherwise the West would try to use that country as it had been used before.( we have seen how many times the country was under the rule of the military leaders and enjoyed the support of the West, even though they were not democratically elected leaders, whenever the country seemed to make genuine attempts to come close to India). For Sri Lanka, however, it is important not to antagonize any of the above four countries due to any outside pressures, even if it come from one of those very four countries.

When it comes to colonies of India, India and Indians have a different view. For them we are the untouchables. Our resources were plundered by the Indians since their arrival after 1792 and still doing it. Even today most of our wealth end up in India. It is alleged that Shastri was murdered by the Third Eye.

  3. Christie Says:

The writer should look at Kashmiri and Tibet. US dominance of IT is mutually dependent on US and the Indian Union. Obama Democrats get a lot of Finding from the Indians. It is said Indians are the leading political donators in the US, Canada and UK. That is why they are taking us to the international gallows.

Endia will NEVER be a sensible country. Russia and China are already working together but Endia sleeps with BOTH Russia and USA!

Can Russia and China trust such a cunning turncoat? NO!

We all know what Endia did in SL by breast feeding the LTTE to destroy SL. We don’t trust Endia. So do Russia and China. Now Russia has started to sell OFFENSIVE WEAPONS to Pakistan and China despite Endian objections.

This is a turning point of Jihad in the west. West has LOST their war on Jihad.

  6. Mr. Bernard Wijeyasingha Says:

The timing of this article is appropriate since China has already invited India, Pakistan, Iran, and Mongolia to become full fledged members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) next month (September 2014) and they have accepted. who would not? It would create an organization with 4 nuclear powered nations (Russia, China, India and Pakistan), one potential nuclear powered nation (Iran), two security council members (Russia and China), two of the world’s largest economies (India and China), three of the members of the BRICS group of nations (India, Russia and China) where the “New Development bank” is the bank of the BRICS group and already has seed money of 100 Billion dollars where China contributed 50 Billion in Yuan, while the other members contributed 18 Billion each with 5 Billion in US dollars.

That bank is more well funded than the African national Bank which has a total investment of 30 Billion dollars and doe not carry the debt inherent in the US backed banks such as the World Bank, IMF, or the Asia Development bank.

It would then create a new force from the China sea to Eastern Europe (since Russia Collective Security Treaty Organization CSTO and the SCO work in tandem) and down to the Indian ocean. It would include entrance into the bay of Bengal and the straits of Hormuz. The article even commented of a current currency along the lines of the Euro. It would be a devastating blow the role of the US dollar as the international currency of exchange if that ever happened. It would also explain why China is buying so much gold when she has already surpassed South Africa in the mining of Gold within China. China’s gold untapped gold reserves are estimated to be 7% of the world proven reserves.

This was first reported in a blog in the Asia Times. the implications of which would be felt as far away as the United States and NATO and define the rise of the Asia Pacific region as the primary region of power. The US still has the might of Japan but with the inclusion of Iran, Pakistan and India (including Mongolia) the rapid rise of the SCO will be a subject much written. It is a shame that Colombo did not make the necessary overtures to be included with the SCO but still maybe included in some future date. If not maybe with the CSTO of Russia.

  7. Mr. Bernard Wijeyasingha Says:

The article points to the US offering India a place in the Security Council. Until recently when China formerly invited India, Pakistan, Iran and Mongolia to become full members of the SCO it was China’s veto that kept India from becoming a member of the Security Council. None of the other members (USA, UK, France or Russia) stood in India’s way. Now with India entering the SCO that obstacle is removed and it also places the US in an odd position.

After supporting India’s entrance into the Security Council Washington would be hard pressed to now refuse her. The chances of India becoming a member of the Security Council has greatly risen. Even without being a member of the Security Council India, Pakistan and Iran now will have a voice that must be heard by the West and cannot be ignored.

Simultaneously next month Scotland will be voting for independence from the United Kingdom. When (and not if) Scotland gets her independence it would be primarily based on her control of the North Sea oil field, which is one of the largest oil fields in the world. To date that revenue has been channeled to London. With Independence Scotland will emerge as a Catholic nation free from the Church of England, free from London’s tax revenues, have her own military, air force and navy, Edinburgh will emerge as one of the Capitals of the world with her own voice in the UN and other nation’s embassies in her city. Scottish culture will be free from the yoke of the “United Kingdom” and Scotland will have her own currency.

The implications of this new nation on the mindset of the Western world would have far reaching implications. Quebec of Canada can then demand the same referendum, not based on faith or language but based on the vast oil and gas reserves that is at her disposal. Unlike France who carries the baggage of a Colonial Empire, French speaking Quebec does not. She can set her own immigration policies and considering the social and economic crisis of France Quebec stands to gain a large influx of immigrants from France that are determined by her immigration policies. Quebec also stands to gain from direct foreign investments from Europe.

Taking this one step further the secessionist tendencies of Texas where Governor Rick Perry has been arrested by the Federal government (Washington D.C.) for political reasons. He will face a grand jury in a liberal county of that state. Making a long issue short an independent Texas cannot be ruled out. If so then expect Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi to Arizona joining in. They would form a formidable new nation. The New England states get their gas from the state of Louisiana. Louisiana controls the mouth of the mighty Mississippi. Between Texas Louisiana (who has the longest coast line of any US state 15 thousand miles of it) they control the Gulf and by that access to Central and South America.
Most of the US military personnel come from Southern states. The Gulf region gets an annual rainfall measured by the feet per year and unlike the rest of the US with the exception of California these states have harvests 3 times a year. They will be rid of the massive US debt and create a currency stronger than the US dollar.
These are the implications when Scotland becomes an independent nation next month (September 2014) and I have barely scratched the surface of what it will mean to world geopolitics when The SCO expands and the United Kingdom ceases to be. It will then have to refer to itself as Great Britain.

  8. Mr. Bernard Wijeyasingha Says:

All of the US major harbors are located in Texas and Louisiana where the bulk of foreign goods come up the Mississippi. Other states with large harbors include California and New York but they are not as vital to the US as those in Texas and Louisiana. Forgot to mention that.

  9. Mr. Bernard Wijeyasingha Says:

Most of the military bases are also located in those states. Like Quebec and Scotland a new nation made up of these states would control the vast oil reserves of the Gulf and within their territory . They would also control the shipping routes of the Mississippi. Due to the geographical nature of the Mississippi dams cannot be built above them. What remains of the US then will be dependent on this new nation. The secessionist movements of this area have been gaining ground for awhile. What would give them an authentic voice is the independence of Scotland for economic and cultural reasons, and possibly the independence of Quebec from (liberal, English speaking, Protestant) Canada.

  10. Lorenzo Says:

Scotland is NOT likely to vote YES for independence.

NO vote is the majority so far.

Referendum will be on 18 September. VERY UNLIKELY things will change by then. Scotland will remain part of the UK.

This is BAD NEWS for Tamil Elam separatists.

Break up of Canada, USA and UK is anyway good for the world. The problem is it is not happening unfortunately.

IF Putin has ANY brains left, he should fund African Americans with weapons, etc. to fight for INDEPENDENCE AND FREEDOM.

  11. Nanda Says:

“West has LOST their war on Jihad.”

West is THE JIHAD. Their “war on Jihad” is bogus.

  12. Leela Says:

I do not believe neither Canada nor the USA nor the UK would have a problem of secession in the foreseeable future. Beginning of the downfall of those countries will emanate by the Islamists making use of their hypocritical stance of human rights, this right, that right baggage to propagate Islamic jihad. I wish I live to see their folly.

  13. Ananda-USA Says:

I think the formation of a bank by the BRIC countries to fund development projects is a GREAT idea which will circumvent the current monopoly of the IMF that is a tool used by the NeoColonial West to control and punish developing nations.

I have long advocated this, in addition to the creation of a UNION OF NATIONS as an alternative the current United Nations that dominated and controlled by NeoColonialists of the West to pursue their global agenda.

By the way, I am currently in Sri Lanka. I have toured the Northern Province and the WAR ZONE, and saw all of the hot spots of the war, and the military equipment built by the LTTE to support their military wing. I also saw the fruit and vegetable farms, hundreds of acres in extent, that the LTTE had created. They are now maintained by the Army with the produce going into the Defence coffers. Prabhakaran would turn in his grave if he saw how his yeoman efforts are now benefiting the enemy he failed to destroy. POETIC JUSTICE … I say! Jayawewa!

I am amazed by the PUBLIC infrastructure development by the government that I have seen. Along the East and West coasts, and the Central A9 route, the newly renovated/rebuilt roads are awesome, and often better than those which exist in the South. However, although I saw massive investment in buildings, both commercial and residential, in the greater Colombo area, there is no parallel PRIVATE investment on a similar scale, for example, in Jaffna. My inquiries indicate that the Tamil Diaspora money is responsible for some of new developments iaround Colombo, but why is the Tamil Diaspora not focusing on Jaffna as well? Are they avoiding doing that on the instructions of the TNA so they can claim that the Northern Province is getting step motherly treatment, that can be eliminated only if they gain complete autonomy?

Nevertheless, the Northern Province is developing rapidly, the people seem to be happy, the Army is largely in their omnipresent bases, and even helping to provide water to people in the midst of the prevailing drought, and is bustling with commercial activity with people going about their routine business. There is really no massive unhappiness and tension that the Eelamist Diaspora and the TNA keeps yelling about. They seem to be ALL FAKE COMPLAINTS designed to incite strife where there is NONE.

IT IS TIME that the 13th Amendment shackling Mother Lanka was disposed of, and the Northern Province opened up to settlement by Sinhala people just as the Tamil people of Sri Lanka settle freely in the South. It is the inalienable right of ALL PEOPLE of Sri Lanka to live and work ANYWHERE in Sri Lanka without let or hindrance by anyone. That is an essential ingredient of TRUE DEMOCRACY in TOGETHERNESS, unlike the FALSE DEMOCRACY of subdivision of Sri Lanka into ethnic fiefdoms walled off from each other to preserve an UNNATURAL NOTION of DIVERSITY in SEPARATENESS.

GREAT NEWS! India is clamping down on NGOs!

It appears that India is fed up with NGOs undermining India and remaking the country in their own image, just as Sri Lanka has moved to curb them for similar reasons.

Under Narendra Modi, it appears that NGOs in India will be strictly controlled, and restrictions on their funding, will be strengthened.

The following article, albeit by a proponent of NGO inteference in sovereign developing nations, makes interesting reading.

    ……………………………….
    India’s NGO Backlash

India prides itself on its respect for democratic values. So why are civil society groups under attack?

    By Ram Mashru

    ForeignPolicy.com

On July 10, India’s recently elected government presented its draft budget to Parliament. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s speech underwent the usual flurry of analysis — most of which, however, glossed over a particularly insidious detail. Should it become law, the budget will grant revenue officials the power to revoke the registration and tax exemptions of any nongovernment organizations or charitable institutions that run afoul of the country’s complex tax rules. The measure spells disaster for India’s civil society organizations.

The budget proposal follows the furor over a report produced by one of India’s domestic intelligence services that denounces the country’s NGOs as fronts for foreign interests that are undermining India’s development. The leaked report — which claims that NGOs are responsible for a 2 to 3 percent loss to economic growth — was handed to Narendra Modi, India’s new right-wing prime minister, days after he took office, and it was circulated to a number of government ministries, prompting fears of an official clampdown.

Although the report names dozens of activists and organizations, it singles out Greenpeace as a “threat to national economic security.”

Although the report names dozens of activists and organizations, it singles out Greenpeace as a “threat to national economic security.” The organization, the report alleges, is using its “exponential” growth in terms of “reach, impact, volunteers, and media influence” to “create obstacles in India’s energy plans.” (The photo above shows Greenpeace activists staging a sit -in to protest the destruction of forests in Madhya Pradesh.) Also in the cross-hairs are groups such as Amnesty International and ActionAid, which are accused of sponsoring “anti-national” protests.

The report bemoans the disruption caused by NGOs in sectors spanning industry, technology, and natural resources, and it comes just as India’s new government has pledged to fast-track applications for major construction projects. The coincidence exposes a clear commercial motive: NGOs in India have been particularly active in campaigning against large projects that are environmentally devastating. The report discredits this long and successful history of activism just as India’s government has given the green light to firms seeking to exploit the country’s natural and industrial potential.

“The government is adopting scare tactics,” said Suhas Chakma, director of the Asian Center for Human Rights, in an interview with the Guardian. “It wants to ensure that nobody comes in the way of big projects.” The People’s Union for Civil Liberties, India’s largest human rights organization, also reportedly blasted the report as an attempt to intimidate and silence activist groups. Some activists named in the report — such as the anti-nuclear campaigner S.P. Udayakumar, who was accused of having “deep and growing connections” with the United States and Germany — are considering legal action.

The demonization of India’s watchdog agencies is neither new nor unexpected, but foreign funding is a particularly sensitive issue. In fact, India’s Intelligence Bureau is not the only organ of state investigating the matter. In a follow-up to the report, India’s Ministry of Home Affairs claimed that the country’s NGOs are “vulnerable to the risks of money laundering and terrorist financing.” And on July 4, India’s Supreme Court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation, another domestic intelligence agency, to complete its probe into NGO finances after entertaining a public-interest lawsuit last year against the Hind Swaraj Trust, an outfit founded and run by the famous anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare.

Despite having full charitable status in accordance with Indian law, Greenpeace’s Indian subsidiary is now subject to a new set of rigid rules. It must obtain the approval of the Ministry of Home Affairs before it can accept any future donations from the U.S.-based ClimateWorks Foundation or its parent body, Greenpeace International.

This policing of NGO finances has an insidious history. In India’s war of attrition against civil society organizations, starving them of funds has been the preferred mode of attack. Last year, Human Rights Watch reported that the Indian government was using funding rules to “repress groups critical of the government.” The report accuses the government of using ministerial harassment, the threat of criminal investigation, and restrictive financing regimes to force advocacy groups to “toe the line.” The consequences have been far-reaching. In May 2013, the government revoked the right of the Indian Social Action Forum, an umbrella organization, to receive foreign funding, constraining the operations of its 700 subsidiaries. Last year, India’s Ministry of Home Affairs froze the accounts of as many as 4,000 NGOs for violating rules on international funding. Groups across the spectrum — campaigning on issues as diverse as torture, domestic violence, and minority representation — have all been undercut in this way.

The chief culprit is the 2010 Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act. Originally passed as an anti-corruption law aimed at preventing politicians from taking bribes from abroad, the statute mandates an onerous system of financial hurdles for civil society groups. As Maja Daruwala, of the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative in New Delhi, notes, under the act, India’s NGOs are “unfairly overregulated.” They must reregister every five years, cannot accept foreign funds for any activities dubbed “political” by the state, and are denied the investment opportunities available to other legal entities, forcing them to survive on charitable contributions.

This overregulation exposes a despicable double standard on foreign money. India is severing crucial international funding lifelines for NGOs even as it actively courts foreign investment in key industries, including defense, infrastructure, and insurance. Indeed, the July 10 budget speech was a sustained signaling exercise, rolling out sweeping reforms in an effort to seduce international investors.

Campaigners across the globe have fought hard to free India’s advocacy groups from these restrictive controls. In 2011, Margaret Sekaggya, then the U.N. special rapporteur on human rights defenders, and, in 2012, the U.N. Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review committee both called on India to reform its laws to ensure that civic organizations can operate with freedom and independence. In the absence of such protections, Indian NGOs are left with only two options: They must self-censor or close shop.

Of course, not all nonstate groups are benign. It was the Shiksha Bachao Andolan Samiti (Save Education Movement), a group that claimed to be safeguarding collective interests, that forced the recent pulping of The Hindus, a history of Hinduism by University of Chicago scholar Wendy Doniger. The group sued Penguin, the book’s publisher, for offending religious sentiments, triggering a four-year legal battle that ended with Penguin’s capitulation earlier this year, when it agreed to an out-of-court settlement. Emboldened by this victory, the Save Education Movement has now set its sights on other works of art and literature that it has deemed transgressive.

Yet it’s not this sort of activity that prompts the ire of NGO critics. The Intelligence Bureau report taps into a deep well of knee-jerk public hostility toward nonstate groups, especially those that are nonnative. The Intelligence Bureau’s conclusions raise some important questions about the quality of India’s nonstate space: How tolerant is the government of critical voices? How willing is it to remedy complaints and be held to account?

The Intelligence Bureau report dismisses the work of some of India’s most prominent NGOs as “anti-national” — a nebulous offense encompassing almost anything that goes against the government’s platform.

The Intelligence Bureau report dismisses the work of some of India’s most prominent NGOs as “anti-national” — a nebulous offense encompassing almost anything that goes against the government’s platform. Some political groups have welcomed the possibility of a clampdown, accusing NGOs of falsely claiming to be working in the public interest to avoid scrutiny. The vagueness of these charges reflects a mounting threat to Indian civil society.

The tragedy is that the Intelligence Bureau’s fresh assault on NGOs is entirely unprovoked. Claims that NGOs have held back India’s growth are highly dubious. There is little evidence of a nefarious “foreign hand” at work, and there is scant suggestion that NGOs have broken any laws. But the damage has already been done. India’s Ministry of Home Affairs called a meeting on July 4, after the leaked report made headlines, and decided that the implementation of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act needed to be “tightened” and that there should be “greater scrutiny of those NGOs about whom the government has [received] an adverse report.”

As Daruwala has argued, “True democracies celebrate involvement of citizens.” The covert war that India has waged against civil society groups places serious hurdles in the way of popular participation and corrupts the quality of nonstate space. First, the demonization of NGOs diminishes India’s proud history of civic activism, which deserves credit for everything from catalyzing the country’s independence movement to campaigns for women’s rights. But more worrying is the creation of a climate of fear and self-restraint. As the anti-nuclear campaigner Achin Vanaik said in the aftermath of the report to the Guardian, “We are fearful that this is a kind of witch hunt with longer-term implications to repress all kinds of popular struggles.”

    Ananda,

“My inquiries indicate that the Tamil Diaspora money is responsible for some of new developments iaround Colombo, but why is the Tamil Diaspora not focusing on Jaffna as well?”

Future Tamil Elam will INCLUDE COLOMBO CITY. At least this is what Tamilians want.

“Are they avoiding doing that on the instructions of the TNA so they can claim that the Northern Province is getting step motherly treatment, that can be eliminated only if they gain complete autonomy?”

YES! Keeping the beggar’s wound bleeding!!

“There is really no massive unhappiness and tension that the Eelamist Diaspora and the TNA keeps yelling about. They seem to be ALL FAKE COMPLAINTS designed to incite strife where there is NONE.”

There NEVER was!! But we had war.

  16. Lorenzo Says:

    Nanda,

They did start it but now it has become UNCONTROLLABLE. The problem is it affects western interests. They can’t run away from that.

IF Muslim-Muslim wars end (I hope NOT), all these Jihadists will come home to USA, UK, etc. and that means HELL. So they make sure it continues.

  17. Ananda-USA Says:

    Lorenzo,

Regarding the beheading of the US Journalist, I beg to differ that this augurs victory for the Jihadists.

I think that this in-your-face act will galvanize the US and European powers to push back against the Islamic State by committing greater military resources, including US troops.

Let us watch and see: the pot of military conflict in the Middle East is boiling again!

  18. Ananda-USA Says:

I watched Dr. Subramaniam Swamy’s speech on Sri Lanka TV; it was an unambigous indication that India’s foreign policy towards Sri Lanka has reversed completely from that of Sonia Gandhi’s govt.

Furthermore, he admitted that Tamil Terrorism in Sri Lanka was initiated and fostered by India, and that iot was a GREAT MISRTAKE on India’s part.

HERE AT LAST … we have India TELLING THE TRUTH and admitting not only to Mea Culpa but also to Mea Maxima Culpa!

India will not endorse any foreign intervention in Sri Lankan affairs – BJP leader

    ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Aug 20, Colombo: India’s foreign policy is very clear and will not agree to any foreign power interfering in Sri Lanka’s internal matters, a senior leader of India’s governing Bharatha Janatha Party (BJP) Dr. Subramanian Swamy said.

Speaking at the last day sessions of Sri Lanka’s three-day defense meet, Defense Seminar 2014, at the Galadari Hotel in Colombo on the topic ‘India – Sri Lanka Relations’ , Dr. Swamy said India’s ‘national interests’ are the most prioritized and India will not favor one particular ethnic group.

“India’s foreign policy is very clear and will not agree to any foreign power interfering Sri Lanka’s internal matters, nor it will intervene in any such regional context either. India’s ‘national interests’ are the most prioritized and India will not come forward to help one particular ethnic group alone,” he said adding that every segment in Sri Lanka should stick to that policy.

“Indian people, except for a few extremist groups, have overwhelmingly voted against any form of terrorism and it was evident in all recent election results,” the BJP leader underscored.

The senior BJP leader assured the “love and support for a united sibling nation of Sri Lanka” since the new Indian government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not fettered by the past compulsions of Indian politics.

Speaking of Sri Lanka’s close relationship with China, Dr. Swamy pointed out that it was India’s mistake earlier for leaving a vacuum to be filled with China’s offer of assistance.

“President Rajapaksa first invited India to commence harbor construction in Hambantota but due to Tamil Nadu compulsions, India did not take part in it. Now, China has built a massive harbor for Sri Lanka with all modern facilities,” he said.

Addressing the issue of devolving power to Sri Lanka’s provinces under India-brokered 13th Amendment to the Constitution, Dr. Swamy pointed out that the Sri Lankan President through the elections and provincial councils, has given all what they asked for except for the police powers.

“It is time that Tamils in Sri Lanka also become stake holders in the Sri Lankan polity and work for the betterment of the country like, how India with all diverse cultures are running, although the Hindus make 85% of the population,” he remarked.

  19. Ananda-USA Says:

I have said it before, and I will say it again: the existence of Provincial Council Governments created under the 13th Amendment only gives the TNA separatists more legal status to undermine and destroy Sri Lanka.

The FAILURE to investigate, indict, prosecute, and punish these LTTE proxies and to BAN all separatist groups such as the TULF, TELO, PLOTE and EPRLF now pretending to be legitimate political parties is ASININE. The MORE you let them GET OFF SCOT FREE, the MORE YOU ENCOURAGE them to committ TREASON against Sri Lanka in collaboration with Tamil Nadu and Foreign agencies and Neo-Colonialist Western Powers.

The BEST RECONCILIATION is to DELIVER JUSTICE to their myriad victims by bringing these criminals to book, and to throwing them in prison sentenced to hard labor.

No “Reconciliation” with SERIAL MURDERERS and TRAITORS is necessary. It is they who inflicted murder and mayhem upon the country killing thousands of innocents … so hold them ACCOUNTABLE for their crimes of the past 30 years. Don’t elevate them to become legislators and provide them the cover to cause further mayhem.

Call for expanded UN probe divides TNA ahead of party convention
Top leadership assures inquiry into N&E PC members’ move

General Secretary of the five-party Tamil National Alliance (TNA) as well as its dominant partner, Ilankai Thamil Arasu Kadchi, Mavai S. Senathirajah, MP, yesterday said that the party hadn’t authorised any of its members to seek a wider UN investigation against Sri Lanka.

National List MP Senathirajah said that the party was inquiring into circumstances under which a group of 33 members of the Northern and Eastern Provincial Councils had called for the Geneva-based United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to expand its ongoing inquiry to investigate alleged atrocities committed by successive governments against Tamil speaking people since 1974.

The MP was responding to a query by The Island as regards the latest move made by the TNA in the run-up to the UNHRC session next month. Senathirajah said that the leadership wasn’t aware of the provincial councillors’ move.

The Island on Tuesday revealed the TNA Councillor’s request to outgoing UNHRC Chief Navi Pillay.

The UN recently launched the inquiry under the supervision of British national Sandra Beidas, formerly with the London headquartered Amnesty International. The investigation focuses on the period from Feb 2002 to May 2009.

In a letter dated August 17 addressed to UNHRC Chief , 33 Tamil National Alliance members of the TNA-run Northern Provincial Council (NPC) as well as the UPFA controlled Eastern Provincial Council (EPC) asked the UN agency to ascertain whether Sri Lanka committed genocide. They have requested the UNHRC to set up an investigation body in Tamil Nadu due to Sri Lanka’s refusal to cooperate with the UN investigation.

Among the signatories are Northern PC Deputy Chairman M. Anthony Jeyanathan and Ministers, Thambirajah Gurukularajah, Balasubramanium Deniwaran and Dr. Pathmanathan Sathiyalingham.

The five-party TNA alliance consists of the ITAK (Illankai Thamil Arasu Kadchchi), TULF, TELO, PLOTE and EPRLF. Three of them are former Indian trained terrorist groups.

Well informed sources told The Island that Northern Province Chief Minister, C. V. Vigneswaran had been angered by the unexpected move. Sources said that the retired supreme court justice had expressed his displeasure to those responsible for the plea to Geneva. CM Vigneswaran wasn’t available for comment.

Responding to another query, sources said that Indian authorities, too, had been disturbed by the TNA move. India strongly opposed the setting up an external investigation when the UNHRC adopted US-led resolution at the last Geneva sessions in March.

Sri Lankan authorities brought the latest development to the notice of top Bharatiya Janatha Party (BJP) official, Dr. Subramanian Swamy, who is in Colombo to attend the fourth edition of Defence Seminar. Dr. Swamy lashed out at the TNA during subsequent meetings with the local media.

The Geneva issue could cause unnecessary friction in the run-up forthcoming ITAK convention in Vavuniya, where veteran politician Senathirajah was now expected to be elected its leader. The four-day event is scheduled to begin on September 6.

Chairman of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Committee for Strategic Action and Leader of the Janatha Party Dr. Subramanian Swamy yesterday said Sri Lanka’s victory over terrorism helped ensure the security of India too. “Not only that Sri Lankans have started to live in normalcy without fear but a major national security goal of India was also achieved as a collateral gain by Sri Lanka’s victory over the LTTE,” he said. Swamy added that reconciliation will go a long way if Tamils as a bloc do not vote against Sinhala candidates at the forthcoming elections.

“We will not accept any inquiry against Sri Lanka from any quarter.

“No genocide has taken place in Sri Lanka,” Dr. Swamy emphasized. He was addressing the delegates at the Defence Seminar 2014 in Colombo yesterday.

The Janatha Party leader said that India’s foreign policy will be formulated with national interests in mind. India will always place its own national interest above the interests of Provincial governments.

Swamy said that issue in Sri Lanka is not an ethnic issue but purely an issue related to linguistics.

“Patriotic Indians do not consider the core issue of the Sri Lankan strife as connected to ethnicity as the West is prone to project, but that it was a linguistic one,” he said.

He said that he has never been able to understand the attitude of the Tamil people who adopted former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka as a candidate at the last Presidential election while leveling baseless allegations that the army committed genocide in Sri Lanka.

“I have never been able to understand the Tamil attitude in Sri Lank particularly in the North.

The Tamils who kept on telling me that that the army committed genocide have selected the Commander of Army as their candidate,” he said.

Swamy queried as to how the Commander of the Army was not aware of a genocide if it had been perpetrated.

“How is it possible that the Commander of Sri Lanka Army knew nothing about the human rights atrocities carried out by the Sri Lankan army and President Rajapaksa would alone be responsible for them.

The Janatha Party Leader added that no genocide had taken place in Sri Lanka during the conflict and even the UN has not said that Sri Lanka has committed genocide.

“It is a group of people with vested interests based in London who are trying to propagate this ideology,” he said.

    1. MR has wasted over 272,000,000 rupees on presidential commissions.

    This is INSANE!!

What good did any of them bring to the country?

    2. Despite GR’s BEAUTIFICATION, Colombo is the 13th from BOTTOM of livable cities in the world. Or the 13th UNLIVABLE city in the world out of close to 200 cities.

    (the economist)

Are we still going to waste money on this Tamil-Muslim GHETTO called Colombo? Instead use that money on SINHALA MAJORITY cities.

  23. SA Kumar Says:

I have said it before, and I will say it again: the existence of Provincial Council Governments created under the 13th Amendment only gives the TNA separatists more legal status to undermine and destroy Sri Lanka.

Naalai pirrakkum Saiva Thamil Eelam (NP) !

We asked Thamil Eelam but we got Saiva Thamil Eelam !!!

  24. Mr. Bernard Wijeyasingha Says:

Lorenzo: You need to Google Asia Times (8/21/14) and read an article titled “Sanctions rebound to hit Europeans”. I quote a specific passage:

“…Russia decided to hit back against US and EU sanctions by barring some US and EU imports. And why shouldn’t it, after such gross provocation? But there’s a definite downside for innocent people. For example, Russia is the biggest market for French apples and pears, of which 1.5 million tonnes were expected to be exported this year. Now, thanks to Russia’s reply to the US/UK-sponsored embargo there are hundreds of small farmers in France who are going to have a miserable Christmas. The Scottish and Norwegian fishing industries are suffering appallingly because their exports to Russia were enormous. Now – nothing.

I take a section of that quote: “The Scottish and Norwegian fishing industries are suffering appallingly because their exports to Russia were enormous. Now – nothing”. For the average Scot the decisions made by London is not only out of their control but is now ruining their lives. It is things like this including an article in the DRUDGE report a few days ago that showed a sharp spike in the number of Scots willing to vote to break free from London.

  25. Mr. Bernard Wijeyasingha Says:

Sorry I accidentally pasted instead of copying. The quoted article now reflects a double copy of the same news. that was a typo on my part, please read the article titled “Sanctions rebound to hit Europeans” in the Asia Times

  26. Lorenzo Says:

    Thanks BW.

And MOST EU countries are already on shaky economic ground!

But I doubt they will have an impact on their WHOLE NATIONAL (INDIVIDUAL) ECONOMIES. Agricultural and fishing component is very small.

I think this is a US PLAN to save its OWN ailing agri industry by busting EU competitors.
