    I salute you Dr. Nalin!!

Of course on the face of it, it looks MS had to give into foreign agents’ pressure to denounce MR publicly to spoil MR’s election campaign. There probably could have been an organised propaganda & hate campaign by these NGO led groups to put MS into submission. There was news that his officials stopped answering calls full of abuse which MS mentioned in the speech. What is important is, this the lesson the MR group should learn;they should find a good team of young professionals handling propaganda work over social media & print. MR group should not depend solely on age old rallies & ground work in the villages.
However the ulterior motive of MS’s speech is his fear that if MR wins handsomely that he could be impeached, I think.

By the way as someone else questioned, why Nalin, you were not in any list to the parliament, I wonder. You do know working inside is much more important & effective than from outside & one day, hope you are there!

President Sirisena did us a favour by making things clear to voters — Udaya
    The Island – July 15, 2015, 9:34 pm

In this interview, Udaya Gammanpila, UPFA candidate for the Colombo district and leader of Pivithuru Hela Urumaya speaks to The Island staffer C. A. Chandraprema about the controversial statement made by President Maithripala Sirisena the day before yesterday. This interview was taken a couple of hours after president Sirisena made his special statement.

    Q. What do you make of President Maithripala Sirisena’s special statement on Tuesday evening?

    A. We must not forget the fact that he was elected president by a coalition led by the UNP. Therefore if he has any feelings of gratitude it will be towards the UNP and not towards the UPFA. Since he was elected by the UNP, he is under obligation to them. I am thankful to the president for displaying his true colours before the election so that the UPFA voters can make an informed decision.

    Q. You have said somewhere that with president Maithripala openly rooting for the UNP in this manner, he seems to have pushed the entire SLFP and UPFA vote onto the laps of Mahinda Rajapaksa and his loyalists.

    A. Yes. We must be thankful to the president for making his real feelings known to the world. In the past six months, there have been two factions in the SLFP, one led by Maithri and the other by Mahinda. Even though the Maithri faction did not have a presence in the villages, there were some Maithri loyalists in the provincial councils and Parliament. The argument put forward by the Maithri faction was that they respect Mahinda Rajapaksa as the former leader but now Maithripala is the party leader and therefore they had to work with Maithri and there was no need to bring back Mahinda. They also argued that Maithripala would do what was necessary to ensure that the SLFP won the next parliamentary election. By now the remnants of the Maithripala faction still left in the UPFA know that they were mistaken. From today onwards, there are no two factions in the SLFP and the UPFA. There is only one faction and one SLFP and one UPFA which looks to Mahinda for leadership. If there was even a slight impression that Maithripala Sirisena would lead the UPFA to victory and that there was no need of Mahinda Rajapaksa, all those doubts have been laid to rest now that Maithri has shown us where he stands.

    Q. With president Sirisena being forced to give nominations to Mahinda Rajapaksa, many of those identified as Maithri loyalists were forced to decamp and seek shelter under the UNP banner. But a few have remained to contest on the UPFA list. What do you think will be the position of the Maithripala loyalists who stayed back?

    A. President Maithripala has been fair by the ordinary SLFP loyalists by openly speaking his mind so that they can make an informed decision. But, at the same time, he has just about sealed the fate of his loyalists who are contesting the election on the UPFA lists. The people always suspected that once the parliamentary election was over, Sirisena might try to form a government led by the UNP along with some of his loyalists who get elected on the UPFA list. Now the people know that this was exactly what he had in mind all along – not a UPFA victory. Therefore, those thought to be Maithri loyalists on the UPFA lists run the risk of being defeated at this election. A little while ago, one prominent UPFA candidate who is identified as a Maithri loyalist told me that it would have been better for Maithri to have stuck a knife into him and finished him off once and for all instead of making such a statement while they were in the middle of an election campaign. He also said ruefully that that was the gift that Maithripala had given them for having followed him after abandoning Mahinda.

    Q. This is one of the rare instances in Sri Lankan political history where the leader of a political party is not participating in the election campaign of his own organisation. The only instance bearing any resemblance to this is that of Sirima Bandaranaike not supporting Hector Kobbekaduwa at the 1982 presidential election.

    A. You can’t compare this to what happened in 1982 because Mrs Bandaranaike never teamed up with the UNP to defeat the SLFP. There are no parallels anywhere to what is happening now. President Sirisena forcibly took over the party opposed to him and if he now wants to see that party defeated.

    Q. Six months ago, you were among those who embarked on what looked like an impossible task of getting Mahinda back into politics. Now he is back in politics. Then he was given nominations. The next thing that happened was that many of those opposed to Mahinda left the UPFA and joined the UNP leaving the SLFP and the UPFA in the hands of the Mahinda loyalists. Now, president Sirisena has publicly stated his stand and given the UPFA voter prior warning. Aren’t these great political bonanzas that have come your way one after the other.

    A. The present leaders assumed duties on the evening of Jan. 9. The following morning I said at a UPFA press conference that we would take action to defeat the new government at the next parliamentary election. On Jan. 13 I announced that we would bring back Mahinda Rajapaksa as our prime ministerial candidate. Because that campaign was built up outside the SLFP, we were able to survive the counter measures taken by the new leadership of that party to stifle the bring-back-Mahinda campaign. We are very happy that our predictions have come true.

    Q. Dayan Jayatilleke, Sarath N. Silva and Wasantha Karannagoda were dropped from the UPFA National List at the last moment. These three people would have pulled in votes for the UPFA. In hindsight this too appears to be a part of president Sirisena’s plan to undermine the UPFA?

    A. President Sirisena has been working for the benefit of the UNP. He tried several tricks after agreeing under pressure to give nominations to Mahinda Rajapaksa. He tried to block nominations for Prasanna Ranatunga and me. President Rajapaksa had to personally intervene to ensure our nomination. Then they refused to give nominations to Samamalee Sakalasuriya, Saman Lal Fernando and Sampath Atukorale. All that was done firstly to weaken the UPFA list and to undermine the Mahinda Rajapaksa camp. But, because we understood what they were aiming at, they have failed in creating disunity in the MR camp. They have failed in disheartening our activists. However, they have succeeded in weakening the list to some extent.

    Q. Do you think the UPFA campaign will be affected by the president remaining neutral?

    A. Absolutely not! The bring-back-Mahinda campaign which we started immediately after the presidential election was a campaign against both Maithripala Sirisena and the government. It was a campaign centred on Mahinda. We were campaigning to defeat the present government. If the government was doing anything wrong, the first person who bears responsibility for that is the head of the government and the Cabinet, who is President Sirisena.

    Q. President Sirisena stated very clearly that he had dissolved parliament to prevent the UNP government from being defeated through a no-confidence motion against the prime minister. Then again he said that the UPFA group in Parliament was conspiring to defeat the UNP government through a no confidence motion and appoint Mahinda to Parliament on the National List to head a UPFA government.

    A. Yes we did want to defeat the UNP government. But we never wanted appoint Mahinda Rajapaksa on the National List and form a government. We wanted to form a government after an election with a clear mandate from the people.

    Q. President Sirisena also said that in the event of a UPFA victory there were several party seniors fit to be prime minister. But the president is bound to appoint as PM not those whom likes, but he who commands the confidence of the majority of MPs in parliament. Your comments.

    A. We see that president Sirisena, too, has indirectly predicted a victory for the UPFA. The president does not have discretion in appointing the prime minister. He is constitutionally bound to appoint as PM the person who commands the confidence of the majority of MPs in parliament. In 1994, president D. B. Wijetunga had to appoint Chandrika Kumaratunga as the prime minister and Chandrika Kumaratunga in turn was compelled to appoint Ranil Wickremesinghe as PM in 2001 for that reason. That’s what’s going to happen this time as well.

    Q. How do you view the role played by Susil Premajayantha and Anura Priyadarshana Yapa in thwarting the attempt to force Mahinda to go his own way and ensuring that the SLFP and UPFA remained in one piece at this election?

    A. What should happen in any democratic party is that the will of the majority of its members should prevail rather than the personal preferences and prejudices of individual leaders. Over the past six months we have held rallies in various places to convince the party leaders that the vast majority of our people want Mahinda Rajapaksa as prime minister. We must commend Mr Susil Premajayantha and Anura Priyadarshana Yapa for demonstrating to the entire word that the UPFA and the SLFP are political entities that uphold the will of the majority.

    Q. What happened to the Jathika Hela Urumaya?

    A. The JHU was not just another political party. It arose to fill a certain political vacuum. But because of the MOU signed on Dec. 01, 2014, the JHU started co-habiting with separatists, terrorists and federalists. With that they deviated from the founding principles of the party. That is why we had to form the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya. The JHU died on Dec. 01 2014 and was buried in July 2015 when they joined the UNP bandwagon.

    Q. We see that political parties like the TNA, the JVP, the UPFA and the UNP are contesting this election while maintaining their distinctive identities. Parties like the Communist Party would not form a coalition with the UNP even if their lives depended upon it. The JHU however does not seem to have an identity like that. Is it the case that the JHU was never a real political party but just a group of people around Champika Ranawaka?

    A. The fact is that the JHU has been turned into a group of political vagrants. In December they were with the Swan. In January they were with the betel leaf, in June they were with the diamond. By July they had gone over to the Elephant. The day after Parliament was dissolved, Ranawaka said that the Central Bank bond issue was a massive fraud and that it was Ranil Wickremesinghe who was responsible and that parliament had been dissolved to prevent the report of the COPE inquiry into the bond scam from being tabled in parliament. They have now got together with the very people they described as rogues! Today, the JHU has become a movement centred around an individual rather than principles. They have only one aim – to make Ranawaka the president of the country. They are willing to give up any principle to achieve that aim. I know Champika well. If Hitler and Champika contested for the presidency in 2020, I would support Hitler!

Mahinda was a decent man to invite him to his home and offer him B’Fast without knowing his inner evil heart on that day. He is a vicious snake not an ordinary snake. People in this country should know by now who is this traitor and how his mind works. He changes his colors every second and I see him as mental disorderly person.

No leader of a party has spoken like that in our history. He is not fit to be a President of any Pradeshiya Saba even because to have such a person as head of a country is dangerous and shameless. He should be sacked at once by the S.L.F.P. as he is not fit to be the President of a party which has a long history with great leaders. This shameless traitor must resign on his own for his shameless remarks on President Mahinda Rajapksa and the S.L.F.P. party. If he knows that 100% on Mahinda’s side why on earth he keeps the post of Presidency of the party without handing over to the man who actually loves this party and the nation? Sack the traitor and fight the enemy UNP head on to win the next General election on Aug 17th. Jayawewa to Mahinda our leader for ever.

His attempts to see the UPFA defeated in the elections and save Ranil from the CB scam are both bound to fail.
