ASGIRIYE CHAPTER ISSUES A TOUGH STATEMENT

Following a meeting of the Karaka Sangha Sabha, the Mahanayake of the Asgiriya Chapter, the Most Venerable Warakagoda Gnanaratana Thera in a strongly worded statement today highlighted concerns about the challenges posed by internal and external conspiracies against Sinhala Buddhists and emphasized the need for the Mahanayake Theras of the Three Nikayas and the patriotic people of the country to act in unison to face such injustices.
All other religious groups in the country should keep it in mind that Buddhists in Sri Lanka had always respected and allowed unhindered the existence of other religions. We condemn acts by other religious groups that insult this tolerant Buddhist ethic,” the statement said. Although we do not approve the aggressive behaviour and speech of Bhikku Galabodaatte Gnanasara the viewpoint expressed by him cannot be discarded. Insulting Bhikkus by various groups without inquiring into the veracity of the issues raised by him cannot be condoned.”

Like Ananda-USA says, the the other two Nikayas must join in, issuing similar tough statements warning those at the helm at present. Unless the other two Mahanayakes also adopt the same stand, the yahapalana scoundrels will hardly heed the Asgiriya warning. At a government press conference held the next day (21st June), Rajitha Senarathne is asked by a journalist to respond to the Asgiriya Mahanayake Thera’s charge (in that statement compiled by the Sangha Sabha) that while conniving at politicians who are engaged in speeches and actions that are likely to inflame feelings of mutual hatred among the different ethnic communities, the government is only pursuing the Buddhist monks who are merely reacting to those unscrupulous politicians. In an apparently confused, but deliberately confusing, self-contradictory response, SR reflects a garbled version of the statement. Paragraph 6 of the statement refers to the Buddhist activists’ controversial allegation carried in print and electronic media that there is a clandestine campaign to sterilise Sinhalese women. SR subtly distorts this allegation: he says that as the doctor involved is a Sinhalese, a rumour has arisen that a normal advice about birth control (offered to a mother after the birth of a certain number of children) she gave to a Muslim woman was an attempt to restrict Muslim population growth! What a diabolical liar this cabinet spokesman is! SR was noncommittal about taking action in response to the Mahanayake Thera’s statement. A statement will be issued in response, he said. SR is only trying to devalue that statement. The other habitually lying nincompoop S.B. Dissanayake publicly apologised to the Mahanayake Thera for referring to Gnanasara Thera by his bare name without any honorific (an insult by an unnamed minister to the monk that the statement draws attention to). SB volunteers to say mea culpa to that charge. I think he is joining SR in a common effort to neutralise the effect of the Asgiriya Sangha Sabha’s statement, deflecting public attention from the grave matter that it raises.

Agree with Ananda that ALL the Nikayas should join the Asgiriya statement, to unite the Country for the greater good of ALL the People, and the protection of the Buddhists who have paid dearly with lives & funds and many other ways, for many hundreds of years.

According to Derana TV’s 6.55PM News today (2017.06.23), the Ramanna Nikaya has completely ENDORSED the statement previously made by the Asgiri Chapter of the Siam Nikaya!
The Ramanna Nikaya Theros further stated that a UNIFIED statement from ALL THREE Nikayas should be seriously considered as a warning to the Yamapalana government that cannot be ignored.
Only the Amarapura Nikaya STILL remains to formally issue a similar statement, and we URGE the venerable clergy of the Amarapura Nikaya to do that without delay in the best interest of our Motherland and our threatened Sinhala Buddhist Community.
They MUST HELP NOW to UNIFY the PATRIOTIC FORCES of our nation in this time of GREAT PERIL to our existence as a sovereign Buddhist nation!
May the THRIVIDARATNAYA, the Buddha, the Dahmma and the Sangha, Bless and Protect our Motherland as they have done throughout the hallowed history of our Resplendent Island!
