The Asgiriya Chapter of the Siyam sect on Saturday vehemently protested against the proposed new Constitution at a meeting the Mahanayake of the Chapter Most Ven. Warakagoda Sri Gnanaratne and other senior monks had with a group of Buddhasasana Task Force representatives at the Asgiriya temple.

The Asgiriya senior monks led by the Mahanayake declared that one of the objectives of the proposed new constitution was to make way for separatism and remove the foremost place given to Buddhism in the existing Constitution.

They said they would not hesitate to take to the streets to show their opposition to the constitution project.

The Mahanayke told the visitors that another objective of the architects of the new constitution being prepared was to destroy the hitherto existing Buddhist environment in the country and do away with the unitary status of the country to please foreign powers.

Most Ven. Gnanaratne thera warned that if the proposed Constitution sought to reduce the powers of the President it would have a negative impact on the unitary status of the state and pave way for the division of the country.

  2. Ananda-USA Says:

The MAHA SANGHA have CONFIRMED what I have been long-saying

The EXECUTIVE PRESIDENCY should be RETAINED and STRENGTHENED FURTHER to endow our government with the ABILITY to DEFEND and PROTECT our Motherland BETTER!

It is PRECISELY for that REASON that the MOST POWERFUL countries in the WORLD TODAY have adopted the EXECUTIVE PRESIDENTIAL form of government.

We Sri Lankans, threatened from all sides by EXTERNAL & INTERNAL ENEMIES dare not do ANY LESS!

    1. RETAIN & STRENGTHEN the EXECUTIVE PRESIDENCY. REPEAL the 19th Amendment with its term limits completely.

    2. ELIMINATE the post of PRIME MINISTER; retain the post of SPEAKER of the HOUSE.

    3. CREATE a SENATE with 2 Senators per District to give regions with lower populations a greater say than under population based representation.

    4. REPEAL the 13th Amendment and DISSOLVE the Provincial Council System as unnecessary redundant by reach that is PRONE TO SEPARATISM.

    5. INTRODUCE a DISTRICT-based system of Administration headed by a DISTRICT Governor APPOINTED by the PRESIDENT and NOT ELECTED by DISTRICT residents.

    6. STRENGTHEN TREASON LAWS and MANDATE ENFORCEMENT.

    7. DECLARE Buddhism to be the STATE RELIGION to be PROTECTED & FOSTERED by the National Government. Freedom of worship should be guaranteed to other minority religions.

    8. DECLARE Sinhala to be the ONLY OFFICIAL NATIONAL LANGUAGE, with the right if Tamil speakers to use Tamil in official communications and in courts of law. ENGLISH should be a COMPULSORY link language nationwide and for international communications.

    9. NATIONAL INTEGRATION through enforcing the right of ALL CITIZENS to RESIDE and WORK anywhere in Sri Lanka should be adopted as OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT POLICY.

    10. ONLY ONE SYSTEM OF LAWS applicable to all citizens of Sri Lanka, irrespective of community, should be ADOPTED. All community-specific laws such as Sinhala Kandyan law, Tamil Thesawalamai Law, Muslim Sharia Law including Muslim marriage law, should be DECLARED ILLEGAL and DISMANTLED!
