Here the monk is telling the truth; Ali Sabry is lying. His cunning but guilty smile is a give away. He said one thing to Al Jazeera, and he is saying another thing to the local media in SL in this video. Obviously, he is equivocating. As a Muslim believer he can be thought to be following the Taqiyyah principle, of which the Wikipedia gives a simple definition: “In Islam, Taqiya or Taqiyya (Arabic: تقیة) taqiyyah, literally “prudence, fear”) is a precautionary dissimulation or denial of religious belief and practice in the face of persecution’. Ali Sabry is clearly imagining or actually pretending that Muslims are being persecuted in Sri Lanka. He is nevertheless a very intelligent person who has cozied up to GR as his lawyer using that intelligence. He is a PC and is also legal adviser to GR who happens to be the current president. The PC title can be easily misunderstood in this context; the subtle difference between the legal adviser to the president and legal adviser to the private citizen GR is lost on the ignorant ones among the local population and on foreigners who are mostly unaware of the local use of the PC title. Ali Sabry’s speech elsewhere reveals him to be a serious ‘man of religion’; not all persons of religion are harmless. In his position, he is a great potential danger to GR, and more so to the country. GR must be warned.
