Chief Prelates call for legal measures against distortion of Buddhism

In response to the recent emergence of a self-proclaimed “Awalokitheshwara” propagating distorted interpretations of Buddhist philosophy, the Chief Prelates of the three Buddhist Sects have collectively written to the President, urging him to enact legal provisions to address this concerning issue. The letter emphasizes the critical need to safeguard the purity and integrity of Buddhism, a cornerstone of Sri Lanka’s cultural and spiritual heritage.

The self-proclaimed “Awalokitheshwara” has gained attention for disseminating teachings that deviate from the authentic principles of Buddhism, leading to confusion and potential misunderstandings among the public. In their letter, the Chief Prelates express deep concern about the potential impact of such distortions on the genuine understanding and practice of Buddhism in the country.

The Chief Prelates highlight the importance of preserving the sanctity of Buddhist teachings and traditions, which have played a fundamental role in shaping the cultural and moral fabric of Sri Lanka for centuries.
