Colombo, Sept. 7 (Daily Mirror) – The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) said it will not remain tolerant of continuous smear campaigns carried out by the current government and will not allow such practices to continue in the future.
Speaking at a media briefing held at the party headquarters, SLPP National Organizer Namal Rajapaksa said legal action would be pursued against false allegations repeatedly directed at the Rajapaksa family, citing past claims involving golden horses,” the Dubai Marriott Hotel, funds in Uganda, and rockets. He said a new smear campaign has now emerged in connection with the recent container controversy.
Rajapaksa questioned the government over the release of 323 containers from the Colombo Port in January without inspection and demanded that authorities disclose what goods were brought into the country. He claimed there was reasonable suspicion that containers carrying chemicals were linked to those released without checks.
He further criticized the government for failing to conduct proper inspections while instead attempting to discredit the opposition. Rajapaksa also noted that four individuals had been arrested within 12 hours of media conferences that displayed photographs of his family.
In addition, he demanded that the government clarify how land in Nuwara Eliya had been allocated for ice production.
Rajapaksa accused the government of failing to curb the growing wave of violence and underworld shootings, urging immediate action to restore public security. He also challenged the government to reveal details of the 323 released containers and the items they contained.
