Sri Lanka has witnessed many INGOs whose sole purpose of their existence was to thrive on othersƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ miseries. The terrorism that plagued our country for three decades was their precious cash cow in the South Asian region. Though 20 million Sri Lankans were greatly relieved by the end of Terrorism, it has infuriated highly paid ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-carrion fowlsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ or dollar vultures, as they are commonly known among Sri Lankans -in bogus rights groups such as Amnesty, HRW and Crisis Group.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Now , they make their fullest effort to topple the ongoing reconciliation process in our country wishing Sri Lanka would be back in another bloody war ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ . ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ While people like Jim McDonals, (ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-Sri Lanka Country SpecialistƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ for Amnesty U.S) are busy with writing petitions to White House and showing terrorist propaganda videos around the world, ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ One Sri Lanka came across a rare INGO that really helps Sri Lankan people to recover from the wounds of war.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ We found this news on Mine Advisory GroupƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s website describing how the INGO helped resettlement of 2140 internally displaced people in Sugandipuram village, by clearing landmines and other unexploded devices left by the Tamil Tiger terrorists.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ One Sri Lanka Peace Watch commends this true humanitarian organization and its employees who really live up to their mission by promoting human rights. We consider the MAG to be a great example to be followed by all other groups who claim them to be ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-Rights GroupsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚, if they want to do anything meaningful towards promoting human right.

Suresh lost his right arm during the civil war. Both his parents and his sister were killed. But, despite his tragic misfortunes, the 12-year-old has an incredibly positive outlook.

Suresh was one of 2,140ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ internally displaced peopleƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ (IDPs) who returned to Suthanthipuram village in June, after MAG released previously inaccessible land that had been contaminated with 69 anti-personnel landmines and 15 items ofunexploded ordnanceƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ (UXO). He told us he now hopes to study hard and get a good job to support his grandmother when he gets older.

ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-I am very happy to leave the IDP camp and go back home with my grandmother,ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ he said. ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-I canƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t wait to go back to school and help my grandmother to rebuild our house.ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚

Suthanthipuram is located in the north-eastern corner of Mullaitivu District, in Puthukudiyiruppu Division ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” the final stronghold of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), and where the last stages of the conflict took place in May 2009.

Many of the 638 families who fled the fighting had been living in camps for two years and were coming back home for the first time.

As well as enabling a safe return to their houses, our work also meant that 600 wells, two schools, a hospital, five water tanks for irrigation purposes, five square kilometres of agricultural land and 20 small business premises were all available for the community.

One shop that is fully stocked and operational is the local co-operative. Run by the Government, these co-operatives play a crucial role in the immediate stages after resettlement, with community members given stamps to collect essential food items.

ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-We have now opened up our co-operative after MAG cleared the area,ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ said Sales Manager Jusuthas Jude. ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-And 170 families will benefit from this shop, so we are very thankful to MAG.ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚

A further 3,693 IDPs were able to resettle in Thevipuram and Vallipunam ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” two other towns in Puthukudiyiruppu ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” during the month of June.

OurƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Community LiaisonƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ staff provided safety briefings to all three returning communities, informing returnees of the location of hazardous areas, and what steps to take if they uncover landmines or UXO.
