ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Uncle Sam and Aunty Pillay will not halt in Geneva in their quest to disembark in Sri Lanka. The password is Accountability, the username is Human Rights with Civilian Casualties as the web page but the untold hidden agenda is to punish for winning a war that was disapproved- against a banned terrorist outfit! To greet Uncle/Aunty and their litter in the arrival lounge with intent to intervene and interfere must be avoided like the plague but treated with care as passing passengers from a diplomatic distance.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Their criteria on civilian casualties are selective, in practice discriminatory: was there any cry for accountability when the LTTE killed thousands of civilians over 30 years? Did the West desire to intervene when the LTTE eliminated their Tamil political adversaries and killed Tamil civilians whom the terrorist felt could not be crushed under their jackboots in the North and East? This needs retelling often.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Offered western prescription was to blow peace pipes with the terrorists and reach a settlement conceding demands, adding more strength to the terrorists. Their guidance was followed foolishly for years, engaging in a futile on-off dialogue. If continued,durable peace would have been for ever a distant dream and civilian atrocities a common occurrence. Hard talk is necessary to blow human rights bluff of the West with a reciprocal requirement to listen and learn from any useful source on our infirmities; west is a market relied strongly to keep the economy buoyant: needs safeguarding in difficult times.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The national priorities should take precedent at this historical pace-setting moment: unfolding decisions will have an impact on the future more than the present. Gratifying is the response of a nation willing to shove economic hardships to the background and rise above petty differences to stand up for the country against foreign interventions. Sri Lankans come out best when pinned against a rock wall.
Rising cost of living is a crushing body blow that needs strenuous protest but the patriotic people did not forget the need to rise to the defense of the country when in peril, remembering the elimination of terrorism is not incomparable to price escalations.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The opposition and critical private media outfits placed the country ahead of petty differences with the government. It was shameful of the TNA to invite members of the Human Rights Council to sanction foreign judicial intervention to Sri Lanka. [ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-For these reasons we have urged the international community to take steps to institute an international investigation into the credible allegations of war crimes committed by both sides during the last stages of the warƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚- extract from the TNA statement]. TNA deserves just treatment for its treachery!
Country is paying dearly for a monumental lapse of the LLRC in failing to create a vehicle for the implementation of its recommendations – leaving it to a Government that ordinarily needs a whipping to wake up from slumber.LLRC knew their interim recommendations remain mostly unattended.
The price paid for being laid back was felt in Geneva-though it is a mere three months from the release of the report. Its no reason to bow to a western timetable with their bewildering double standards.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ None will stand strong against the thrust of the West with iron determination to defeat it as much as President Rajapakse, notwithstanding other infirmities.West seeks a limited ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”regime changeƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ to eliminate two principal characters of the war.
The need of the hour is for the government to priories the pressing issues, mindful of creating a stable future, balancing it to satisfy national interest while minimizing international pressures. The following are the prime issues of equal importance-

Inquiries must beheld in a credible manner after giving notice calling for public information. This closes the door to foreign judicial intervention.
(2)ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Grievances– LLRC has identified grievances affecting the various communities but since the North/East suffered most under the LTTE regime, immediate attention be directed to Tamil grievances to wean them away from extreme elements and to create amity. This is the path to tread towards reconciliation.
(3)ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Police and Land Powers and Merger of the North & East– Police & Land powers are the remaining props vested in the peripheral units that can lead to secession in the future.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Constitution should be revisited and Police and Land powers re-vested in the central government. Any trace of merger remaining in the Constitution is not in the interest of national security as shown in the efforts of the previous North/East provincial council that declared an independent state. No room should be left in furthering secession.

A unit larger than the previous village councils should be provided with financial support.This is the best antidote for corruption and to avoid secession
The paramount twin objectives should be to make Sri Lanka secure and stable and successfully establish amity among its people.

Then what about Sinhala grievances?
Then what about Muslim grievances?

Settle non-Tamils in the north and look into their grievances; problem solved.
Tamils will NEVER EVER be satisfied no matter what you give. We gave them a university and what happened? It became a breeding ground of Tamil racism. All non-Tamils have been expelled from it!

Church ‘rift’?
The bishop’s comments also contrast graphically with those of the top Catholic hierarchy in the country. The BBC’s Charles Haviland in Colombo says the differences have laid bare what appears to be a split in the church in Sri Lanka.
A statement by Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, who heads the church in Sri Lanka, accused Western countries of meddling in Sri Lanka’s sovereignty by planning to table a resolution on Sri Lanka at the Human Rights Council, which is currently convening in Geneva.
It said this was “an insult to the intelligence” of Sri Lankans.
The diametrically opposed messages from senior Catholics here point to a rift in the church, even though the cardinal, then an archbishop, worked with the same Bishop of Mannar a decade ago to try to mediate between the government and the Tamil Tigers, our correspondent says.
The church also made a joint presentation to the government-appointed war commission, noting that a priest was among many people who unaccountably disappeared on crossing into government territory as the war ended.
But activists say Cardinal Ranjith should be more vocal on human rights problems.

Taking the above into account, Sri Lanka while being pursued by the International Community is also continuously criticized at home by the Opposition parties. As we are facing a foreign assault against our sovereignty is it not time that all opposition parties halt for the moment their incessant attack on the government ?
In order to do that there should be a sort of “moderators” to contact the opponents and speak to them of the necessity to collaborate with the government and make constructive criticism of “ sliding down an economic precipice” which I am sure the President will listen to.
For that matter JVP and its leaders Lal Kantha, Anura Dissanayake, Tilvin Silva, UNP and its Tissa Attanayake , Gayantha Karunatilleke, Karu Jayasuriya, Ravi Karunanayake, Lakshman Kiriella, and Ranil are the vociferous critics along with Maduluwewe Sobhita who have to be reined in.

Bishop Rayappu is well-remembered for transferring the sacred statue of the Virgin Mary from the Madhu shrine into the hands of the LTTE, and for urging Tamils of Vanni to ‘go with the Eelam forces’. Ever since Eelam war was over, Rayappu and his collaborators have been calling the TNA to do everything they could get the Tamils to stand up as a nation. This lot has no interest what so ever in Sri Lanka.
Prime or not, I agree that six points listed by Dayasri is important. But offer anything; as Lorenzo says here, nothing short of Eelam would settle Tamil grievances. So, only with that in mind we must put forward solutions.
I say; assimilation is the answer. And now.

Human problems (cloaked as Human Rights) in Sri Lanka should never be tied to ethnicity – absolutely true ! There are people of every ethnicity having human problems all over the world, not just in Lanka. With free education (incl.University) plus free health care for all, Sri Lanka is, in fact, one of the better democracies in the world to live in.
INTEGRATING into main stream life in Lanka is the best option for all Tamils in Lanka, not the rest of Lanka integrating into language/life style of Tamil folk who are a minority in Lanka. Tamil leaders have created Separatist problems and that is a solution which is ‘dead on arrival’ to human problems.
Where SEPARATISM ENDS TRUST BEGINS.
All Lankans should concentrate on developing the Economy in a wholesome way.

1. They haven’t DENOUNCED the racist Vada-Kundi resolution
2. They continue to use SEPARATIST names like “Tamil National”, “Tamil Arasu”

4. They plaot against national interests (e.g. secret meetings with Clinton, etc.)
5. They haven’t distanced themselves from the LTTE RUMP.

Can you please confirm this statement of the President when he addressed the nation after the defeat of LTTE.
“There is no MAJORIT and MINORITY in Sri Lanka anymore. There are only those who are “AGAINST” and “FOR” Sri Lanka”.
If this the truth that you said, my question is :- WHY ARE WE SPEAKING OF MINORITY RIGHTS ANY MORE. Of course, in the context of the above statement, I wil not hesitate in branding you as a TRAITOR if you refer to the rights of the people against the nation and country Sri Lankan and Sri Lanka.
So agreeing with Lorenzo, I urge all of the authorities and the intellectuals to refrain from referring to MINORITY (Tamils, Muslim.Malay, Burgher) RIGTS AND PREVILEGES. Let us talk of our way of life as a NATION -(period)

Very Interesting to see a good response from our readers. Very thoughtful & valuable facts, figures, I am sure the learned Mr. Gamini Jayasiri will excel in getting some like minded individuals, writers to lankaweb & many other Newspapers, and form a joint front as the Leader of Australian-Sri lanka association has done.
I always enjoy reading Shenali Waduge’s articles, as well as Charles Perera & Dilrook and many others. I feel most individuals mentioned above will be an asset to keep our Govt. informed about actions to take to counter mostlty Western countries & India.

This should be the guiding principle on EVERY matter. It OVERCOMES racism, caste, religious, political and other BS differences that are totally irrelevent to humans.
We agree Tamils and others have grievances and they MUST be resolved. No argument. There is NO NEED to give ANY grievance the racial/racist outlook. Good governance, poverty, corruption, political violence, threat of separatism, racist political parties are the GRIEVANCES OF ALL!!
Resolve them FIRST.
If someone asks me for some change for coffee or help with something I don’t ask for his ethnicity. It DOES NOT matter.
Looks like the president has come a long way from that; the WRONG WAY. His NEW buddies are making it all the more difficult. Too much power has corrupted him to forget about his roots.

Absolute rubbish. Reconciliation, if any, should only come from the Tamils since they started the animosity.
North/East suffered by selecting to support LTTE. By right huge demonstraion should sprign up from N/E against this resoultion, if they believe they have suffered in the hands of LTTE and their supportive international community.
How about the grievances of thousands of mothers in the south who lost their children, husbands who did not crime ?
Are those grievances less worth than grievance of mothers who willingly let their children join LTTE and enjoyed LTTE favouritism ?
