“UN failed Sri Lanka” – Leaked UN Report
Posted on November 13th, 2012

Asada M Erpini

A UN internal report, which the readers are expected to accept as ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-leakedƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  states, ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-Events in Sri Lanka mark a grave failure of the UNƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚, as quoted by the local media on 13 November. None could state facts more succinctly or clearly than that: the UN, or the United Nations, is not united and is a mere appendage of the rich and the powerful, led by the US and which is at the beck and call of the US doing what the sole superpower of the world commands. The surprising thing is if the UN, except for institutions such as WHO or UNICEF, ever succeeds in its goals and avowed aspirations.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The report quoted in the local media is ascribed to BBC. It is not surprising at all to see the BBC correspondent stating, ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-an earlier UN investigation said it was possible up to 40,000 people had been killed in the final five monthsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ What the UN said in 2009 was that it estimated the number killed in the final stages of the war to be approximately 7000, but since the figures could not be verified, the data were not released. Gordon Weiss, an employee of the UN at its office in Colombo at the time, gave a figure of 20,000 dead, and after his services with the UN ceased and on arriving in his native Australia, the figure ballooned to 40,000 (Incidentally, The Cage, a book written by Weiss on the conflict in Sri Lanka appeared not a long time after that!)

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Many people have no faith in a number of organisations that come within the UN. Being impartial appears to be an aspect that these institutions do not value. There is a High Commissioner for Human Rights, originating from South Africa, who sees Sri Lanka as the only human rights violator on planet earth: what the US did and continues to do in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya and Syria in endeavouring to ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”bring in democracyƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ to non-Caucasian natives who have ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”not yet been civilizedƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ is no concern of hers. Another woman, sadly from Sri Lanka, who is entrusted with overseeing the protection of children, did not see the LTTE forcibly recruiting children to be used as cannon fodder against the Sri Lankan armed forces that went on for decades, but has now woken up from her slumber to point a finger at the Sri Lanka government for not doing what is needed for the welfare of children.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The BBC report goes on to say that the Tamil civilians were exploited by both sides (LTTE and the Sri Lanka government). The whole world saw how the near 300,000 Tamils who had been herded by the LTTE escaped to the armed forces of Sri Lanka when the soldiers breeched the barricades and the embankments. All that the Western media, the NGOs and the LTTE sympathisers saw was indiscriminate shelling of civilians. The truth of the matter is that there was no indiscriminate shelling; the LTTE had planted their heavy weaponry in the No-Fire zones that the government had declared, and, in the pursuit of minimising civilian casualties, the armed forces lost over 6000 men and women in uniform in the final stages of the war.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ It is time that the media people who rush to quote UN figures cite the numbers that the UN had actually mentioned at the time ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” 7000, but not verifiable. LTTE remnants, LTTE sympathisers and many NGOs will continue with figures of 20,000, 40,000, 100,000 or even 200,000 Tamil civilians ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”massacredƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ by the Sri Lankan armed forces, as they stand to gain by depicting Sri Lanka as country of Tamil killers!

By next Tamil Nadu state elections, the death figure will balloon to 80,000.

USA can bring democracy to Saudi Arabia, Oman, U.A.E, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan too. Why stop with Syria, Libya and Egypt? I wonder why they don’t ? Poor Saudis, they need democracy more than Syrians. At least, Assad had an election and won it. What about that 7,000 strong Saudi Royal family, they need democracy too.

facts: UN was created by US and UK. It was not created by any other country in the world except their European cousins. after the creation. the membership was offered and other countries joined in without checking the back ground
this agency is almost a part of US, UK and european govts except the name UN. This agency must go and if not more it exist the more it harm to the world.

just check who was the founder of it. it was created by several western agencies. this is what I heard but check for right info

  3. jayt Says:

go to yahoo answers. under “who created UN”

  4. jayt Says:

anyway. UN is the most secret org in the west that so far did not reveal the the true nature. but for many high school students in canada knows well who runs it. for them it is not a big huge secret.

It give UN full right to open offices in other countries and staff are appointed by western nations and thier home ministries and work for them while no Russia, China, SL etc have rights to appoint their staff and open offices in the west under name “UN”

This dangerous org and their staff should be arrested and lay charges of war crimes

  5. gdesilva Says:

“The BBC report goes on to say that the Tamil civilians were exploited by both sides”

Wow! what a revelation….wouldn’t it be more accurate to say that Tamil civilians were exploited by the BBC and their paymasters to control the colonies of the British Empire?

No wonder it is called the Bullshit Broadcasting Corporation.

  6. jayt Says:

UN and NGOs. are same partners. Good thing about using name “UN”, Western countries have free access to the whole world where they cannot have access under NGOs for eg russia etc

  7. S de Silva Says:

I have said this before and have to sadly repeat that the GoSL should challenge the source of their casualty figures (40,000 – 100,000) and who verified them. If not the UN should retract them or be more honest and say for example that the figures are unverified and anecdotal (from the LTTE!?). If the UN does not do that, SL has the option to demand a clarification or even sue them for Libel, but knowing the manner in the way GoSL has performed so far, we can hardly expect that! – S de Silva – London

Did you guys notice a pattern here..

    1. As soon as this guy who created the report, he has become an Ex. UN Employee. That means, he is no longer answerable for the content of the report irrespective of how inaccurate the content. Didn’t we notice the same from from the Darusman Report – now they all are employees of LTTE front INGOS, and constantly appear to bash Sri Lanka.

    2. Leaking a report in advance is Western strategy -especially, when there are gross inaccuracies.

Who answers for over 56 MILLION dead ??? What happened in Europe to cause such a war ? What lessons can we learn ?
The UN was set up after WW II with the high intent of avoiding WW III.

Lanka suffered nearly 500 yrs of Colonial rule, which brought in various divisions within Lanka, and Cold War (1947-1991), politics made matters worse. The biggest mistake Sri Lankan GoSL authorities made in the past was to allow ILLEGAL MIGRANTS TO ENTER SRI LANKA. This is the one big mistake that has allowed various groups to wish to carve up Sri Lanka. Illegal Migrants feel no LOYALTY to Sri Lanka – they have not integrated into mainstream life here. They do not even know the language of the country. If some people think they are getting cheap labor via illegal migrants, they are sadly mistaken. Look at the strife created, the cost of war in life & funds, plus the costs to the reputation of the country !

  10. Lorenzo Says:

SOME Tamils wanted division of SL. They engaged in ACTS OF TERRORISM AGAINST CIVILIANS, took up arms and fought for it. Their deaths IN WAR are totally justified.

Thanks to the deaths of Tamil terrorists, we have peace in SL.

It is similar to peace in WW2 AFTER tens of thousands of Nazis died.

  11. Fran Diaz Says:

The UN failed to stop the ltte cadre from shooting fleeing civilians who had been held as hostages by the ltte. The UN has also failed to take into account the fact that the ltte shot their own hostages who fled into army controlled areas.

  12. OaO Asithri Says:

“UN failed Sri Lanka” – Indeed UN did fail in Sri Lanka!

Govt. of Sri Lanka must publicize and even now tell the world community about the multiple times where UN vehicles were caught trying to smuggling guns/explosives to the LTTE terrorists controlled northern Sri Lanka (from the GoSL controlled south)!!!

Did poeple on this forum know a person apeared on this web about weak ago under user name “Voice123” After I read his or her trickey comment I asked him to provide his id to this web, he disapeared. What he want to tell us was obvious. This is how a racists western european group who have been acting as middle men in tiger and SL war send messages in directly to Singhalese

  14. Dham Says:

UN is determine to fail Sri Lanka and re-start killing.
Zionists want people to be killed all the time to reduce world’s population. UN HQ run by Zionist murderers.

  15. Voice123 Says:

I am here jayt. I don’t know what you’re talking about. Can you elaborate for me to answer? By the way, my ancestors were always indigenous SRI LANKAN, not Pakistanis or North Indians like yours. You are the racist.

  16. Dilrook Says:

UN is failing Palestinians even today.

Palestinian civilians are needlessly killed by Israeli air strikes targeting civilian centres. What is the UN doing about it? This selective approach of UN must end soon if it is to remain relevant.

  17. Fran Diaz Says:

Ms Navi Pillai on her appointment as head of UNHRC said that she was committed to end “Institutionalised Discrimination” (ID). There is such “ID” in Tamil Nadu to this day where the Caste system is practiced. There is no ID in Sri Lanka except in pockets of Tamil habitation such as in Jaffna. The Upcountry Tamils have a “Caste based mindset”, even though Free Education & Free Health Care is offered to them as for the rest in Lanka.

Ms Pillai should know that it was not Sri Lankans who brought in One and Half Million Tamil people (piteously Caste bound) from Tamil Nadu. It was the Colonial rulers (Dutch & British) who brought them to Sri Lanka. Later, the ltte (and their affiliates) brought in Tamil illegal migrants in large numbers via the Mannar route.

Ms Pillai : Instead of carving up Lanka to solve Institutionalized Discrimination re Caste system of Tamil Nadu, please do take the problem straight to Tamil Nadu, India, where the Tamil problem originates. In all seriousness we say, do kindly donate a modern sanitary system to Tamil Nadu via the UN and this will mitigate the pain of the lowest people in the Caste structure there. The state of Tamil Nadu still employs some 95,000 ‘night soil carriers’.

The Sinhala people and others have been asleep and have only recently woken up to what the real problems of Tamil people are. Blaming others in Sri Lanka will not address or eliminate the Root Cause of the Tamil Problem, “Institutionalised Discrimination” through the Caste System, which originates in Tamil Nadu, India.

Only truth (and Truth) will set us all free of past pain and anger.

  18. Lorenzo Says:

“The ambassador’s (Dayan Jayatilake) presentation ended with the following characterisation of the Lankan state’s policy: It strives for “autonomy within a unitary structure”. A social scientist would not have uttered such a sentence. A unitary structure (=centralised structure) excludes autonomy. But the ambassador’s point is to show that he has listened to Tamil demands for autonomy. It was a political-populist statement.”

    – Tamillnet

Tamil autonomy within a unitary structure?

This is unacceptable. There should be NO autonomy for Tamils in SL.

Why can’t he say that? What’s wrong with our diplomats?

    s de silva

who will initiate it? this is overdue

  20. S de Silva Says:

Jayat: thank you for reading what I had written and posing your question. The VERY BRIEF answer, to start with is for the subject of accountability of Amnesty, HRW etc for their comments to be taken up in the SL Parliament in the first instance and a decision put down to challenge these busy bodies. That will create the justification in the eyes of the foreign bodies for us to take the matter further, requiring them to clarify how they for example arrived at the 40,000 – 100,000 casualty figures when these numbers do not fit with the relevant census statistics, now and past!! – then follow up with legal action on these outfits for libel and seek compensation. Because the only action for example Amnesty and others will understand is when they are forced to pay out. Of course, needless to say, all this is more easily said than done. And the follow-on action by GoSL has to include a TEAM of competent lawyers to take over or as a temporary measure engage a foreign legal firm to pursue the action. Please visit the UK Parliament website and you will be surprised to see how much SL had been discussed and condemned!! – all such actions being sponsored by the Tamil diaspora for promise of votes by the hard-up MP’s!! If the UK expects SL to listen to the outpourings of the UK Parliament, so should they to what we have to say – Sri Lankans have to wake up –
For example, there are many times when Sri Lanka was discussed in the UK Parliament and strictures passed while our fools simply mutter .. “Aney apita puluwanda ehema karanda..?? GoSL bloody well has the right to do that – S de Silva – London
