The Sri Lankan government and a state-run Indian firm on Tuesday signed an agreement to develop infrastructure for storage, regasification and LNG supply for a combined cycle power plant in the island nation, according to the power and energy ministry here.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Sri Lanka’s LTL Holdings Limited and India’s Petronet LNG Limited for the infrastructure development of the Sobadhanavi Combined Cycle Power Plant at Kerawalapitiya, north Colombo.

The Sri Lankan Minister of Power and Energy, Kanchana Wijesekera, and the Deputy High Commissioner of India, Satyanjal Pandey, signed the MoU at a ceremony here.

Wijesekara said the power generation could be as low as fifty per cent less here than generation through fuel usage.

“MOU for the development of Storage facilities, Regasification unit in Kerawalapitiya and the supply of LNG for the Yugadhanavi, Sobadhanavi & other LNG power plants in Sri Lanka was signed today,” Wijesekera said in a post on X.

He said the initiative will “reduce the cost of energy from thermal power generation to the consumer from 2026, contribute towards the clean energy transformation, stabilise the grid for renewable energy integration, create a domestic market for LNG, facilitate LNG bunkering in the future & domestic other LNG requirements.”
“MOU between LTL Holdings Ltd Sri Lanka & Petro Net LNG of India aims to invest in development and implement the 18-month programme from the signing of the MOU to facilitate the LNG requirements through ISO container from Petro Net LNG Kochi Terminal to Port of Colombo and Kerawalapitiya to 1000 MWs of LNG power plants,” he said.

The 350 MW LNG-based Combined Cycle Power Plant Sobadhanavi’ is a landmark power project currently underway in Sri Lanka, according to the adaderana.lk news portal.

“Once commissioned, it would be the largest IPP (independent power producer) in the country and the first power plant to operate with LNG, paving the way for the country to transition to greener forms of power generation from conventional thermal power,” it said.

Wickremesinghe stabilized economy but ties to Rajapaksa clan could hurt

COLOMBO — Sri Lanka’s first presidential election since an economic crisis tipped the government into turmoil two years ago will focus attention on whether the unelected incumbent Ranil Wickremesinghe can hold on to his position.

United National Party’s Wickremesinghe assumed the presidency after Gotabaya Rajapaksa was ousted in the political upheaval of 2022 and the 75-year-old now faces three main competitors — of whom opposition leader Sajith Premadasa is the most popular — in an election next month. A total of 39 candidates have entered the race to win the five-year term.

Whoever comes into power after the vote on Sept. 21 will not only have to oversee Sri Lanka’s economic recovery and negotiations over an International Monetary Fund bailout, but must also navigate the geopolitical landscape at a time of heightened tensions. Sri Lanka’s strategic location in the Indian Ocean means major powers like China, India and the U.S. all have vested interests in its stability.

“Our geographic location and relevance to many countries, in and outside the region, makes this election very significant,” said Sri Lankan historian George I. H. Cooke. “It’s natural for them to be concerned about who will win as they would be interested to know foreign policy trends and how the situation will unfold.”

For that reason, 38-year-old Namal Rajapaksa, representing the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) party, is expected to fail, given that members of his family presided over the worst economic meltdown in the country’s history. Namal is a descendent of the powerful Rajapaksa family, nephew of Gotabaya and son of another former president, Mahinda.

A June survey, the latest available, conducted by nonprofit research outfit Institute for Health Policy showed that Premadasa, representing the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) party has support from 43% of voters. Anura Kumara Dissanayake of National People’s Power (NPP) came second with 30% support, Wickremesinghe with 20% and a generic candidate from SLPP with 7%. Rajapaksa was yet to be named as the SLPP candidate then.

Analysts say Wickremesinghe may be undone by his association with the SLPP and the Rajapaksas, who gave him their support after Gotabaya fled office during the 2022 uprising. Facing severe shortages of fuel, food and medicine, soaring prices and lengthy power cuts, Sri Lankans took to the streets to demand change.

Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court ruled late last year that Gotabaya and Mahinda Rajapaksa were among 13 former leaders guilty of economic mismanagement that led to the crisis.

Since Wickremesinghe has taken the reins, Sri Lanka has sought IMF aid and the economy has again started to grow. On the negative side, the IMF reforms have also hit hard some segments of society.

Dinouk Colombage, a confidant of the incumbent and senior director of international affairs, believes voters will remember the good that Wickremesinghe has done.

“When he took over in 2022, the country’s economy had collapsed. … In the ensuing two years, the president has successfully solved these issues and stabilized the economy,” said Colombage, pointing to success in the IMF program and debt restructuring negotiations with bilateral lenders and bondholders.

Critics argue that Wickremesinghe does not have support beyond urban centers.

“The economic burdens he has imposed on large sections of the population, mostly the poor and the middle classes, and the social discontent it has produced, is likely to work against his political fortunes,” said Jayadeva Uyangoda, a political science professor at the University of Colombo, referring to austerity measures under the IMF program.

Executive Director of the National Peace Council of Sri Lanka Jehan Perera agreed.

“The problem is the unequal division of the burden of this restoration of normalcy,” Perera said. “Prices have risen threefold, but the salaries of most people have remained stagnant. This has created immense hardships to the majority of people to whom the promises of those in the opposition will give hope.”

Uyangoda believes that Premadasa and Dissanayake have better chances of succeeding because of their appeal beyond elite circles and their representation of a major political shift.

Melani Gunathilaka, an activist who took part in the 2022 protests, said that Sri Lanka needs a government that can rule with transparency and is accountable. “I want a party that prioritizes the people’s wellbeing over business and elite interests,” she said.

For now, both opposition parties are promising just that. Vraie Cally Balthazaar, executive committee member of the NPP, said the party will combat corruption. “This election is a chance for people to get the leadership they trust and want,” she said.

The SJB called for voters not to be fooled by SLPP “propaganda.” An SJB organizer, Rehan Jayawickreme, expressed strong confidence in Premadasa, saying: “We are sure Mr. Premadasa will win. It is also important for voters not to fall prey to false propaganda.”

Jayawickreme was referring to the SLPP attempt to frame Gotabaya Rajapaksa as a founding father of modern Sri Lanka during the last presidential election in 2019. Yet, Sri Lankans’ reverence for the Rajapaksa family cannot be underestimated. This is why despite the Rajapaksas’ fall from grace, they still entered Namal in a race he is sure to lose, with the view that raising his profile now may help to return the family to power in the future.

Imran Furkan, CEO of Tresync, a consultancy firm focused on the Asia-Pacific, described Namal’s entry to the presidential race as an “interesting development” but believes his chances are slim due to his name and its association with the 2022 chaos. If anything, Furkan thinks that Wickremesinghe could suffer as the Rajapaksas turn their support to one of their own.

“With Namal’s candidacy, the SLPP’s efforts will focus on securing a decent performance for him. It will be interesting to see if SLPP MPs (members of parliament) currently supporting Wickremesinghe will return to support Namal Rajapaksa,” he told Nikkei Asia.

Despite Sri Lankans’ desire for change, some are still pinning their hopes on Wickremesinghe.

“We didn’t have gas or fuel and had daily power cuts due to the economic collapse,” said Sahan Rathnasekara, a taxi driver in Colombo. “But after Wickremesinghe took over, things improved. We must be thankful he turned our country around.”

Former President Maithripala Sirisena has completed the payments of compensation of Rs. 100 million to the victims of the Easter Sunday terror attacks as ordered by the Supreme Court.

Accordingly, it is reported that the former President has paid the remaining amount of Rs. 12 million on August 16, thereby completing the total compensation payment ordered by the court.

On January 12, 2023, the Supreme Court found that former President Sirisena, former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando, former IGP Pujith Jayasundara, former National Intelligence Chief Sisira Mendis and former Chief of State Intelligence Nilantha Jayawardena have violated the Fundamental Rights of petitioners, by failing to take action to prevent the Easter Sunday attacks despite receiving sufficient intelligence information.

As a result, they were ordered to pay compensation to the victims of the Easter Sunday attacks, Ada Derana reporter said.

Accordingly, the Supreme Court ordered former President Sirisena to pay Rs. 100 million in compensation to the petitioners, former IGP Pujith Jayasundara and the former SIS Director Nilantha Jayawardena were each ordered to pay Rs. 75 million, former Defense Secretary Hemasiri Fernando was ordered to pay Rs. 50 million and former National Intelligence Director Sisira Mendis was ordered to pay Rs. 10 million from their personal money.

In addition, the judgment also stated that the government should pay Rs. 01 million in compensation to the victims.

The order was issued by a seven-member Supreme Court Judge bench, delivering its decision with regard to the 12 petitions filed by various parties stating that their fundamental rights were violated by the defendants’ negligence and failure to prevent the terrorist attacks on April 21, 2019.

The 12 petitions were filed by a group of individuals including Nandana Sirimanna, whose two children were killed in the Easter Sunday attacks, tourism entrepreneur Janath Vidanage, three Catholic Fathers including Rev. Fr. Sarath Iddamalgoda and Attorney-at-Law Moditha Ekanayake, who was injured in the bombings at the Shangri-La Hotel.

On July 15, the Supreme Court had ordered former President Sirisena, former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara and former Chief of State Intelligence Service (SIS) Nilantha Jayawardena, to complete their outstanding compensation payments before August 30, 2024.

Furthermore, the seven-member Supreme Court judge panel had ordered that if the relevant individuals fail to complete the payments before the said date, contempt of court charges will be filed against them before September 20, 2024.

The former President’s lawyers had informed the Supreme Court on the same day that Rs. 58 million of the total Rs. 100 million in compensation, which Sirisena had been ordered to pay the victims, had already been paid.

Meanwhile, the former President had also requested the court through his lawyers to extend the payment period for the remaining sum by six years. However, this request was rejected by the court which extended the deadline to August 30.

On July 11, 2023, the former President completed paying Rs. 15 million as part of the compensation he was ordered to pay to the victims and filed a motion requesting that he be allowed to pay the remaining sum in 10 instalments of Rs. 8.5 million from 30 June 2024 to 20 June 2033.

The deadline to complete the relevant compensation payments was initially set for July 12, 2023.

ENGLISH FICTION AND EELAM PART 1

KAMALIKA PIERIS

Shankari Chandran’s book  Chai time at Cinnamon Gardens,” (2022) won the Miles Franklin award for 2023.This award was established in 1954 by the estate of Miles Franklin to be given to the  novel of the highest literary merit which presents Australian Life in any phase.

However, there are no rave reviews of this book. That is due to the structure of the novel. It has two stories. One story which got the novel its prize, is on contemporary politics and racism in the western suburbs of Sydney, Australia, written by the author with great confidence, because it is based on lived experience. Shankari is a   human rights lawyer. This story suddenly gathers momentum, without warning, reaches a sensational climax at great speed, and abruptly brings the novel to an end, leaving the reader feeling breathless.

The other story, interspersed with the main one, has absolutely nothing to do with the events in Sydney. It is actually a series of ponderous flashbacks to key events in the Tamil Separatism saga of Sri Lanka, written in a different style, by the author who has no personal experience of any of it. In this way, Tamil Separatism is neatly included in a story about racism in Australia.

Reviewers saw this imbalance. The Guardian (UK) said,  set in both modern-day western Sydney and the Sri Lankan civil war, Shankari Chandran’s latest novel Chai time at Cinnamon Gardens,”  is sprawling but unbalanced. The balance doesn’t always sit right. The entire present-day timeline takes place over a short period, in contrast with decades in the flashbacks. Chai Time is an enticing, if not entirely realized, opportunity for a wider conversation about Australia, the diversity of its people and the gaps in our collective cultural knowledge concluded the review.

The story is set in a retirement home in western Sydney, which is owned by an expatriate Ceylon Tamil, filled with Ceylon Tamil senior citizens and staffed by Ceylon Tamil immigrants who somehow manage to live harmoniously without fighting. This sound fictitious, but it was real. Shankari’s grandmother was resident in such a home and Shankari visited her regularly and listened to her reminisces of her life in Jaffna. She took her children also to listen. Many of the residents who lived there and the staff were also Sri Lanka Tamil.

Every fortnight I would take my children, we would visit my grandmother and she would talk to us about the past and tell us stories of her childhood and her life and her migration. And in doing so would tell us the stories of Sri Lanka and our culture and our heritage and our religion and our cooking and our community. The grandmother’s reminiscences would have been on childhood, girlhood, family, but the book does not contain any of that. The book only speaks of the ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka.

That is because this  novel is  part of  a new strategy of using  English  fiction, to  tell  unsuspecting readers about the sufferings  of  the innocent Tamils in the hands of the cruel Sinhalese,  back  in Sri Lanka .  The intention is to catch a reader unawares. So that when the reader next sees a Tamil Separatist demonstration on the street or on TV, hopefully he will say, I know about this. I read it in a novel. This could be described as propaganda via fiction.

Shankari Chandran was born in London and grew up in Australia, but Sri Lanka was always a presence in our lives, she said. Her parents had a strong connection with north and east of Sri Lanka. We were constantly aware of what was happening with the war, she said. My family, particularly my father and his brothers really felt so much grief, anger, and guilt about having left and having survived and having gone on to create good lives for themselves.  And so there was always this pull, and though we weren’t coming back to Sri Lanka, it was still a daily part of our lives. For us it is received memories of the older generation. But I do feel a very strong connection with Sri Lanka, she said.

This means that Shankari’s   interest in Tamil Separatism can be accepted though she has only heard one side of the story. A lot of my work looks at the narratives in Sri Lanka that created  one particular national identity,  Sinhala-Buddhist, which excluded the  Tamils in their own country, she said in her Authors Note to Chai time at Cinnamon Gardens .

Shankari   has more to say on the ethnic conflict.  She says in the Authors Note that Sri Lanka’s nation hood and the historical narrative of its formation has always been Contested. The Island was once three kingdoms forcibly united under British rule. The north and east were historically a Tamil kingdom. Jaffna was its capital. However, Sinhalese people are taught a completely different history, in which Tamil people are later arrivals, usurpers and  a threat to Buddhism,  she concluded in her Authors Note.

Three items are used for propaganda in this book. The first, predictably, is on cruelty in the Eelam war.  In ‘Alaveddy, Northern Sri Lanka 1995’ the character Reuben is whipped by a policeman who had nails fastened to the end of his whip.  ‘the nails had gouged deep cuts into his body sometimes the nails caught  and the whip would be dragged through the skin to free it, leaving  dangling flaps of skin”. One of Reuben’s brothers had a finger snapped out of its socket. The police took the sister into the bedroom.

Vanni jungle May 2009” was on the last phase of the Eelam war.  Sri Lanka army swept through  killing faster, sparing fewer lives.   Bodies littered the streets. Blood was running into the drain.   Young boys and girls were singled out, to be taken away. Parents tried to pull them back and were hit by rifles. Children were prised from the arms of their mothers.

The next propaganda item is the Jaffna Public Library. ‘Jaffna 1977’   is on library collections. According to the book the Jaffna Public Library was a marvelous repository of ancient Tamil culture and archaeology. The Jaffna Public library had parchment maps of Tamil empires, the scrolls of a second century Tamil census, the text books on Ayurveda medicine and pre-Pythagorean Tamil geometry. Readers came to the library for its famed collection of ancient manuscripts that detailed the longevity and richness of the Tamil culture.’

‘Jaffna 1981’ is on the burning of the public library. The fire burned the sacred texts of the ancient Jaffna Kingdom held in the library, also Vedic scrolls etched into ola leaves, British period newspapers,   and the diaries of the first Portuguese traders and songs that venerated the Tamil kings.

This is utter nonsense. The Jaffna Public library was not even heard of, until it got burned down, then overnight it became a wonderful library with valuable items, now burnt to cinders. This is yet another example of the whopping lies uttered by Tamil Separatist Movement.

Jaffna Public Library was a negligible library. Ishwari Corea, librarian of the Colombo Public library had a very low opinion of the Jaffna Public Library. She said she had visited it.  It had a lending, reference and children’s section and that was all. When she   published a three volume work, to celebrate the Colombo Public Library centenary, in the 1980s, she did not include any reference to Jaffna Public Library, let alone a separate essay on its so-called wonderful collection.

HAI Goonetileke does not mention Jaffna Public library in his monumental work Bibliography of Ceylon.” Among the 7 major research sources he used in Ceylon, he mentions Jaffna College Library, but nothing about Jaffna Public library.

The third item is the most interesting. It is pure fiction   but so was the Da Vinci Code. The fictional characters in the book   say that the Tamils were here before the Sinhalese, they were here long before Vijaya.  There were Hindu temples before the Buddhist ones were built. The Sinhala-Buddhists destroyed all this and then said that they came first. Sites that showed early Tamil settlements were deliberately destroyed by the government at the insistence of the Buddhist clergy.  There are remains of Pandya kings in the rest of the island too, but the Buddhist monks do not like to talk about it, said this fictional account.

In the book, there is a prominent fictional character,   Dr K.N. Sri Skandarajah, an archaeologist attached to the University of Jaffna who was the first to say that the Tamils were here before the Sinhalese. He had explored the length and breadth of Sri Lanka to find and preserve the ancient Tamil sites that indicated this.

This fictional Sri Skandarajah was also the ‘curator of one of the largest collections of Tamil archaeological archives in the world.   This collection was held in the Jaffna Public Library because the University did not have room for it. The library offered him space for the books and hundreds of maps that meticulously recorded the geographical scope of the ancient Tamil civilization, a scope vastly different to the diminishing territory of the Tamil people of Sri Lanka, continued this fictitious account.’

Dr.Zakhir Ali, a Borah, (fictional)   who turns up sometime after, was also thinking on the same lines. He had come   looking for Tamil architecture in Pre Buddhist Sri Lanka. He was researching into the competing histories of Sri Lanka, their discovery and suppression.

These two fictional characters meet and engage in fruitful discussion on the theory of pre Buddhist Proto Dravidian migration into Sri Lanka. They had found Tamil Brahmi script carved beneath Buddhist stupas   and said that the early Hindu Tamils of India migrated south to Sri Lanka before Vijaya and before Buddhism. This   discussion   is fictitious.

The fictitious story continues. Sri Skandarajah   and Zakhir Ali   were prevented from perusing their research by the government of Sri Lanka and the Buddhist Sangha. Sri Skandarajah’s   work was suppressed and silenced. All copies of Sri Skandarajah’s   book were withdrawn from universities. But Jaffna Public Library bravely    refused to destroy its copy and    maintained a full set of Sri Skandarajah    works. Zakhir was arrested and tortured by the CID in Colombo.  He was made to retract his book.

The author Shankari Chandran then takes the fiction a little further. She   creates a lengthy fictitious report on the matter, based on the work of fictitious Zakhir Ali   , which is presented to a fictitious tribunal in Sydney which is dealing with the fictitious toppling of a statute of Captain Cook at Cinnamon Gardens.

In that fictitious report,   the character Anji, says, ‘this report charts the archaeological discoveries made by Dr KN Sri Skandarajah in the Jaffna province of Sri Lanka between 1943 and 1956.  He discovered a temple which he named Mayanilayam, and surrounding town complex which indicate that a civilization existed in the north of the island as early as 7 BC. Mayanilayam was built by people who had come from South India and were of Dravidian origin. The discovery of Mayanilayam indicates that an early Hindu civilization existed in Sri Lanka before the arrival of Vijaya and Buddhism.

Dr. Sriskandarajah continued to excavate Mayanilayam for 13 years more. At his request the Jaffna Public Library brought in teams of archaeologists and historians from University of Madras to verify his finding. In 1956, shortly before Sinhala Only Act and Buddha Jayanti, Mayanilayam was closed by the government and the site turned into a military base. This report openly and defiantly states that a Tamil Hindu civilization existed in Sri Lanka before the arrival of Sinhala civilization and Buddhism continued this fictitious account.

This work directly contradicts the prevailing mythology of Sri Lanka’s formation, said Anji. In the later 19 and early 20 century, Sinhalese politicians supported by the Buddhist clergy, created a powerful narrative that Sri Lanka was a Buddhist country. This narrative claims   Sri Lanka for the Sinhalese and frames the Tamils as usurpers from India who arrived later to steal the country from them.

Their history is wrong, said Anji. This is land has been held by Tamils for thousands of years. Mayanilayam makes that clear. The attempt to stop this research strengthens the validity of the thesis.  The foundation of modern day Sri Lanka is built on myths. Historical fiction can only be fought with historical fact such as those buried in Mayanilayam. Anji ends her fictional speech at this point and the tribunal returns to the topic of what to do about the Captain Cook statue.

However, readers seem to have wanted   further clarification. Shankari says in her Authors Note that Mayanilayam and Sri Skandarajah were invented by her. They are both fictitious. Mayanilayam never existed. However, the character of Sri Skandarajah is a composite of all the historians and archaeologists she knew, who have been silenced.

Shankari believes there is some truth in what her fictional characters said. Because in the Authors Note, she says that as Tamils we have learned of about the existence of Dravidian or proto Tamil civilization on the island. We have been taught that the evidence of our existence in the north and east was destroyed and Sinhala-Buddhist temples were built over Tamil Hindu ones. Tamil historians and archaeologists have faced extraordinary pressure from the government and bhikkhus to hide certain findings and emphasis or even contrive others, she concluded.

The question then arises, why was the actual research of these silenced archaeologists not used in the novel.  Where is this research anyway and who are these silenced archaeologists? Two concluding observations, Sinhala civilization was not introduced to Sri Lanka from outside. It ‘evolved’ within Sri Lanka. Hinduism was in its   Vedic period in the 7 century BC. Modern Hinduism came much later.

Colombo, August 18 (Daily Mirror)- The National People’s Power (NPP) will bring back former Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran, who fled to Singapore, to Sri Lanka as the first priority of a NPP government, NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said today.

Speaking at a rally in Kiribathgoda, he said the NPP will take over power with plans to raise state revenue and said the NPP government will stop fraud and corruption.

He said Rs. 1,100 billion in taxes have been defaulted by various people and assured that the NPP government will recover all the defaulted taxes.

“At least Rs. 169 billion can be recovered initially without any issues. There are some court cases regarding the rest. Some file cases against paying taxes and after the court rulings they pay the same amount after about ten years. We will amend laws to recover the tax amount with interest after the court ruling,” he said.

Dissanayake said the NPP will take over power with plans to raise state revenue and said the NPP government will stop fraud and corruption.

He said the NPP government will engage in discussions with the IMF on tax relief and pointed out that the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) tax threshold will be increased from Rs 100,000 to Rs. 200,000.

He also said low income families will be provided with a minimum monthly allowance of Rs. 10,000 under the NPP government.

Dissanayake said the Cabinet of Ministers and Deputy Ministers will be restricted to 25 and there will be no State Ministers under the NPP government.

“We will allocate ministries on a scientific basis,” he added.

The Hidden Forces Behind the UK Race Riots

August 18th, 2024

By Kit Klarenberg Courtesy MintPress News

Aug 9, 2024

Ever since July 29, Britain has been plunged into crisis, with incendiary far-riot rights sending towns and cities across the country spiraling into states of emergency. Vast mobs of armed, angry thugs, motivated by racist, Islamophobic animus, have vandalized homes, property and places of worship, violently clashed with police, and targeted hotels housing refugees with arson attacks in apparent stabs at mass murder. Hundreds of arrests have been made, and counter-protesters have taken to the streets in profusion to counter the upsurge of hatred.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged those responsible will face the full force of the law” for their actions, and several perpetrators have already been sentenced to years in prison. Still, the situation remains gravely tense. Furthermore, in keeping with so many prior explosive, unanticipated episodes in modern British history, a vicious mainstream blame game has erupted, with ultimate responsibility for the upheaval being apportioned to a wide range of domestic and foreign actors and causes.

The unrest’s actual, and perhaps most apparent, sources have been mysteriously overlooked. For one, average Britons remain gripped by an ever-worsening economic cataclysm, in which the cost of essentials ever rises while living standards precipitously decline. The newly-elected Labour government has not only practically pledged to do nothing to alleviate the misery – by maintaining if not intensifying self-destructive austerity policies – but already exacerbated the dire situation significantly by slashing winter fuel payments, leaving millions facing life-threateningly freezing cold, without state support.

History shows that this milieu is invariably a fertile breeding ground for fascism to take root. With no mainstream alternative to the neoliberal status quo, desperate, disillusioned and dispossessed working-class Britons look to outsiders” and extremists like Nigel Farage and Tommy Robinson for salvation in ever-greater numbers. And their remedy, as always, is to blame migrants, refugees and the other” for all of society’s ills and their own personal deprivation rather than ruling elites.

Even more ominously, though, there are unambiguous indications the anti-Muslim fervor that has torn through Britain in August is being stirred up by unseen spectral actors in service of the Zionist entity’s ideological, political, and military interests.

‘Get Them Gone’

For all the flurry of claims and counter-claims about how and why the riots started, there is no dispute they ignited on July 29 following a savage knife attack at a children’s yoga and dance workshop. Three children were killed and eight others injured, with five still in critical condition. Two adults present were also severely harmed. News of the shocking event rapidly spread far and wide, promptly followed by wildly incorrect conjecture and disinformation about the suspect’s identity.

Within mere hours, a popular anti-lockdown account posted on ‘X’ that the attacker was named Ali al Shakati” – an asylum seeker who came to the UK by boat last year…on an MI6 watch list.” While this false information was deleted within an hour, the damage was thoroughly done. Multiple far-right influencers instantly leaped upon these claims, adding further groundless, incriminating details of their own to the mix. Among them was Robinson – aka Stephen Yaxley Lennon – a notorious fascist activist of some standing.

He declared the Southport knife attacker was an alleged Muslim,” adding, They always target women.” The next day, an aggressive crowd gathered outside Southport Mosque, chanting Robinson’s name, along with the offensive Islamophobic slogan, Who the fuck is Allah?” – a common fixture at far-right demonstrations. Attendant law enforcement officers were attacked, objects were hurled at the mosque, and police vehicles were set on fire. This malign spark produced copycat events and incidents across Britain, leading us to where we are now.

In almost every instance, police were quick to identify the rioters as members of the English Defence League (EDL), a now-defunct far-right organization comprised of hardcore anti-Islam agitators and football hooligans. Robinson, the League’s former leader, rubbished these allegations via X on the grounds that there’s has [sic] been no EDL for over a decade.” Nonetheless, in a video published while the Southport riot was ongoing, he seemingly traced the violence back to the group he once headed and the streetfighting dogma it espoused:

Before people…condemn the ‘angry men’, that anger is justified. I’m surprised it’s took [sic] this long…you’ve actually encouraged the scenes you see tonight. You’ve done this, your government has done this, the police have done this…You care more for Afghanis, Somalis, Eritreans, Syrians, Pakistanis. They’re a danger to us. Stop the f***ing boats! Get them out of them [sic] hotels! Get them gone! Send them back! They shouldn’t be here ! Men will rise up, they were always going to rise up, they have to rise up, to defend their families!”

On August 8, intelligence-adjacent independent” outlet Byline Times published a lengthy probe into the real UK race riot instigators,” mapping the key players and Transatlantic network” around Robinson. It argued he may have instigated the recent British upheaval at the behest of a sinister nexus of wealthy far-right figures in Europe and North America, including wealthy Donald Trump supporter Patrick Michael Byrne. Markedly, not once were Israel or Zionists mentioned – far more plausible candidates for directing Robinson’s incitation to Islamophobic violence.

‘Foreign Pressure’

The EDL burst onto British streets in June 2009. Describing itself as a human rights organization”  and touting the slogan not racist, not violent, just no longer silent,” Robinson and his confederates consistently claimed to be simply standing up for white working-class citizens and raising legitimate concerns about extremist Islam. However, the behavior and chants of its members on regular EDL marches through British towns and cities told a very different story.

Still, the League was ever-keen to flaunt its non-racist, diverse credentials. From its inception, the EDL had dedicated divisions for its Cypriot, Greek, Hindu, Jewish, LGBT and Pakistani Christian supporters and other minority groups present on marches besides. The League’s Jewish” wing was always the movement’s most visible, even if barely acknowledged by the mainstream media. The profusion of Israel flags routinely found in EDL protests also went largely unremarked upon during the group’s five-year existence.

Yet, indications that the EDL’s activities served quite another nation’s interests were always unambiguously hidden in plain sight. The League never operated as a charity or political party in Britain, but two separate commercial entities were registered under its name. In June 2011, Robinson’s compatriots launched a company, the English Defence League. A month later, this was updated to the English and Jewish Defence League. Meanwhile, a firm known as EDL English Defence League LTD was registered in December 2010.

Two years later, the company’s name became the Jewish Defence League and one of its directors, Roberta Moore, a belligerent Zionist, established links with Jewish Task Force, a far-right U.S. organization. Founded by Victor Vancier, it espouses a hardcore, fundamentalist Zionism. Despite raising money for illegal settlements in the West Bank and avowedly seeking to save” Israel, Vancier was banned from entering Tel Aviv for his involvement in 18 bombings in New York and Washington, protesting Soviet treatment of Jews during the 1980s.

This connection was reportedly too extreme” for EDL higherups, who subsequently distanced themselves from Moore and their Jewish” wing. However, this is difficult to rationalize with Robinson’s own views. In February 2019, a leaked video depicted the former League chief declaring his love for Israel and discussing how, on some occasions, he is forced to get [his] Zionist card out, which says that [he is] a Zionist.” The clip ended with him proudly declaring:

Palestine?! F*** Palestine. Why would you support Palestine? If there was a war tomorrow, which probably there would be, I would be there on the front line fighting for Israel”.

Five months later, Robinson was jailed for 13 months for contempt of court after he exposed the protected identities of accused sexual groomers while they were on trial in May the previous year. Once imprisoned, notorious hardline Zionist lobby think tank Middle East Forum announced it had not only helped fund his legal expenses but financed and organized 25,000-strong solidarity protests in his honor. An accompanying statement revealed:

MEF is helping Mr. Robinson in his moment of danger…[MEF] is aiding Mr. Robinson…diplomatically, by bringing foreign pressure on the UK government to ensure [his] safety and eventual release.

The statement was signed by MEF Director Gregg Roman, who previously worked in the Zionist entity’s Defence and foreign ministries. There are no prizes for guessing from which country the foreign pressure” to release Robinson emanated.

‘Going Undercover’

In the EDL, Robinson and Moore were not alone in having deep and cohering ties to Israel and a pronounced affinity for Zionism. One of the group’s key founders, Paul Ray,” whose blogging on race was cited in the manifesto of Norwegian Islamophobic mass murderer Anders Breivik, had a highly dubious history indeed as an infiltrator of Palestine solidarity movements in Britain. Whether he was a volunteer or state agent remains unclear today, but he evidently inflicted enormous damage on his targets.

In September 2006, Islamophobic U.S. website FrontPageMag published an exposeé” on how one of its British volunteers” had infiltrated the International Solidarity Movement’s London wing a year prior. ISM is a pro-Palestinian campaign group dedicated to nonviolent protests, with chapters around the world. It trains and dispatches volunteers to the Occupied Territories to assist with nonviolent protest activities. Despite this, in 2003, two ISM activists – Rachel Corrie and Tom Hurndall – were killed by Israeli Occupation Forces.

Investigative journalist Asa Winstanley, a veteran Palestine solidarity activist, has revealed that British intelligence has long penetrated ISM. Ray—real name Paul Cinato—was among the spies who infiltrated the Movement. As the FrontPageMag article reported, he had prior experience going undercover for the police in the UK” before targeting ISM. The outlet added, Photos and intelligence [Cinato] brought back are proving invaluable to intelligence agencies watching ISM and [are] in official hands.”

Again, there are few prizes for guessing the location of the intelligence agencies watching ISM” that benefited from Cinato’s activities. Other British spies who infiltrated the Movement very clearly passed what they learned on to Zionist entity authorities. By 2008, Tel Aviv had obtained such precise intelligence on the group that its volunteers were either deported after entering Israel or blocked from entering altogether. As ISM’s primary raison d’etre was to get people into the Occupied Territories, its value and impact were significantly curtailed.

It must not be forgotten either that the deranged Great Replacement” conspiracy theory was a core precept of the EDL during its five-year-long lifespan and remains promulgated by Robinson and Britain’s fascist rioters in the present day. This narrative posits that Western elites are covertly engaged in a dastardly connivance to flood Europe with Muslims and destroy local culture in service of creating Eurabia,” an Islamized mega-continent and caliphate.

The originator of this profoundly racist, fantastical drivel was Bat Ye’or” – the nom de plume of former Mossad operative Gisèle Littman. In 1961, she and her British husband David led Operation Mural, a sickening Zionist operation to kidnap Jewish children from Morocco to become settler colonists in Israel. She spent three months in Rabat posing as a Christian aid worker, gaining the trust of young targets to assist with their unwilling extraction.

The pair went on to be involved in a variety of Zionist organizations and leading lights in the Islamophobic Counterjihad movement. Despite their sordid personal and professional history being well-documented, Gisèle Littman’s obscenely hypocritical Great Replacement” theory quickly became popular with right-wingers in Europe and North America. As a 2019 Guardian long-read put it:

Once an obscure idea confined to the darker corners of the internet, the anti-Islam ideology is now visible in the everyday politics of the West.”

Littman’s theory” is just one way in which the Zionist entity has over decades normalized and legitimized everyday discrimination and xenophobia towards Muslims while dehumanizing and demonizing them in pursuit of its putrid, genocidal settler colonial project. Having insidiously poisoned Western information spaces with surging Islamophobic hatred via assets such as Tommy Robinson, it appears the pot is finally boiling over in Britain.

That there is a mainstream omerta on these fundamental truths indicates Europe and North America’s media and political class are determined to let the Zionist entity get away with it.

Decolonizing History and Fiction in a Neo Colony

Fair is foul and foul is fair”— William Shakespeare’s Macbeth

COLOMBO | 7 August 2024 (IDN) — Why are there no Booker Prize-winning novels about mundane multicultural families that inter-married for generations, shared religion/s, language/s, histories, and co-existed for centuries, while living in relative harmony in Ceylon / Sri Lanka?

Is the trope of ‘dark natives’ engaged in endless, chaotic violence an international literature prize-winning bestseller that masks white mischief, including sanitized, techno-scientific AI guided hybrid warfare in a post-Truth world awash in distracting Culture Wars?

Susan William’s brilliant and brave book White Malice” is subtitled The CIA and the Covert Recolonization of Africa’. Her analysis may well apply to Eurobond debt trapped Sri Lanka, Pakistan and other Afro-Asian post-colonies, where National Endowment for Democracy (NED), funded protests and regime change operations have unfolded recently. NED is known as the second Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

Conversely, why are there very few prizes, literary or otherwise, for brilliant cross-over social science researchers and journalists like Phil Miller, author of the book Keenie Meenie: The British Mercenaries who got away with war crimes” in Sri Lanka, Oman, Afghanistan, and other parts of the post-colony. Or perhaps we should call it the post-Covid-19 Eurobond and International Monetary Fund (IMF) debt-trapped, Afro-Asian neo-colony.

Located at the center of the Indian Ocean World, a tropical monsoon paradise isle, long deemed an unsinkable aircraft carrier” and hence perpetually in the cross-hairs of great power rivalry, Serendip, Taprobane, Ceylon, Sri Lanka, has so many stories to tell beside tired and trite narratives of ‘ethno-religious violence’—a grand narrative that launched 41 years ago with the staging of ‘Black July’ 1983 as Cold War turned hot in the Global South.

Beyond Literary Prize Politics and Raj Nostalgia Festivals

Literary prize politics and the merits of Shehan Karunatilleke or V.V. Ganashanathan’s novels aside, why not invite the brilliant and brave American journalist, Vincent Bevins to speak at the Galle Literary festival? Or ask Phil Miller in place of rose-tinted British Raj Nostalgia favourites—the flip side of the dark natives’ violence and corruption stereotype?

Bevins is the award-winning author of The Jakarta Method”, about the US Central Intelligence Agency’s (CIA), and British secret service MI-6’s Cold War killing sprees across Asia, Africa and Latin America against communists, socialists and the Red left that helps contextualize some of the armed conflict evident in de-colonizing Ceylon/ Sri Lanka, and elsewhere in the Afro/Asian post/colony.

Phil Miller and Vincent Bevin’s brave books, both published in 2020, read better than a lot of fiction, and are based on recently de-classified documents, including the US State Department, Asia Foundation, the Foreign Office and British Archives. Most important and fascinating in both Bevin’s (and Miller’s) books are the interviews with people who lived through GLADIO-style Cold War clandestine violence and purges against Communists, Socialists the Left and Trade Unions in the de-colonizing Global South—a subject to which we shall return.

While Keenie Meenie” is based on Miller’s Doctoral research at the University of London, Bevin’s he Jakarta Method’ details the 1965 anti-Communist violence and regime change in Indonesia, and helps contextualize patterns of violence evident in de-colonizing Ceylon/Sri Lanka and other Afro/Asian and South American post/colonies, subjected to Cold War Proxy Wars—given Washington’s Domino Theory” that Communism would sweep through Asia after the fall of Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia.

They help us connect the dots of apparently local and internal’ ‘Leftist terrorists’, ethnic, religious and nationalist violence to the wider global Cold War strategy of fanning proxy wars to ensure continued colonial divide and rule policies, while weaponizing religious, linguistic and cultural differences in the Afro-Asian post/colony, by the US-led war machine which maintains a surveillance network of more than 800 military bases around the world at this time to safeguard Euro-American and allied corporate financial, economic and security interests including in off-shore tax havens.

Millers ’s book helps locate the South Asian Cold War proxy war that certainly unfolded in Sri Lanka—between India, regional hegemon, and the Capitalist West backed and penetrated United National Party’s (UNP), President J.R Jayawardena regime in Colombo after 1977—when ‘Yankie Dickie’ as JR was nick-named), came to power. The proxy war between the neocolonial West and India escalated after the staging of the 1983 pogrom/riots in Colombo that opened the door to British, US/Israeli intelligence agencies and mercenaries who also provided protection to the President.

Thus too, we may read Sri Lanka’s ethnic conflict’ as another South Asian Regional Cold War proxy war: India, allied then as now with then Communist Russia/ the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), had already fought a war with US-proxy Pakistan’s ‘Garrison State’ on its western border and assisted the creation of Bangladesh in 1971, (formally, East Pakistan).

India was hence fearful of another US military base being set up in her Southern backyard—the coveted Trincomalee deep sea harbor, over which the British and French had once fought a bloody battle seeking to extend surveillance and control over Indian Ocean trade routes. Hence, Indian intelligence agencies through the Research and Analysis wing (RAW), funded and trained Tamil militant groups including the Liberation Tigers (LTTE), in the northeast—to deter the pro-US Colombo regime from any such adventure.

Lifting the Veil of Islanded Ignorance

Along with Yale University historian, Eugen Ford’s Cold War Monks: Buddhism and America’s Secret Strategy in South Asia”, Miller and Bevins help lift the veil off long-cultivated islanded ignorance among Colombo’s academic, political, and business intelligentsia about the wider geopolitical Cold War dynamics that contextualize Sri Lanka’s spasms of conflict among Leftists, ethno-nationalists and the State, as well as, the pogrom/riots of 1983 and the war that followed. This includes the weaponization of linguistic and religious identity politics in collusion with and funding for politicians in the geostrategic post/colony –still struggling for real independence from the UK-US Raj.

Cold War Monks: Buddhism and America’s Secret Strategy in Southeast Asia” (Yale University Press; 2017)’ based on analysis of de-classified Asia Foundation and State Department documents tells the story of the use and abuse of religion/s and religious networks of influence to stave off ‘God-less” Communist, socialist and left movements.

Ford traces the weaponization of Buddhism by the CIA via the Asia Foundation in order to contain Communism, as well as de-colonization struggles in Southeast Asia, including Burma, now Myanmar and Sri Lanka—emanating from Theravada Thailand, where OOO the Southeast Asian NATO was set up head-quartered. This work parallels work by historians who have traced a similar weaponization of Islam in West and Central Asia against Communist and Socialist national liberation movements.

Jakarta Method-style ‘lists’ of homes and business to be targeted were used in the Pogrom of 1983 in Sri Lanka. Likewise, the forms and aesthetics of violence associated with the killings in university campuses during the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), uprising in 1971, and 1988-89 echo patterns of violence in Universities across Indonesia during the CIA-backed anti-communist purges of 1965.

The pogrom/ riots of 1983 and subsequent bouts of armed conflict in Sri Lanka attenuated close ties among the Sinhala and Tamil speaking communities that had live in proximity for centuries and inter-married for generations in urban areas and coastal regions.

Based on impeccable research these excellent books by Bevins’, Ford and Millar help us connect the dots of apparently local and internal’ Leftist terrorists, ethnic, religious and nationalist conflicts in Sri Lanka to the wider Cold War strategy of fanning regional proxy wars in the post/colony, to ensure neo-colonial divide and rule policies, while weaponizing religious, linguistic and cultural differences. This to protect the economic and security interest of a retreating UK Empire and the rising US empire at the end of World War 2 in the Global South.

GLADIO style ‘stay behind’ operations ensured continued colonial divide and rule proxy war in the decolonizing third world. After, all the US-led war machine maintains a network of more than 800 military bases around the world at this time to safeguard Euro-American and allied corporate financial, economic and security interests including in offshore tax havens. And they were not growing roses and waterlilies in these military bases.

White Mercenaries and Whiter Malice: Grenades in Cocktail Glasses

Phil Miller book which exposes the role of the British secret services in the post/colony.  lifts the veil of secrecy about the role of British mercenaries and Special Operations Forces that structured 30 year of armed conflict in the geostrategic island. It reveals another dimension of how the global geopolitical arena of Cold War in South Asia structured an apparently internal conflict in Sri Lanka

Phil Miller’s book opens with the arrival of Britain’s Keenie Meenie Mercenaries, ex-SAS officers in the island in 1983. The Keenie Meenie or KMS mercenaries (now Saladin London) were in the country to help set up and train the Sri Lankan Special Task Force (STF), later accused of war crimes, also with Israeli intelligence MOSSAD agents.

Miller describes how villagers in Batticaloa, Eastern Province who were bombed from the air called the Keenie Meenie white mercenaries, who flew the military helicopters, Mossadu”. Ironically some of the same villages from the highly multicultural Eastern Province later became refugees in Britain. The STF training Camps were overseen by Ravi Jayawardena, son of the US-backed President J.R. Jayawardena. Ravi who was a marksman, remarkably, later became a Buddhist Monk in Thailand and dawned Robes for a short time, before migrating to Australia, and then returning to Sri Lanka. Was he the agent of his own destiny or ‘caught in webs of belief’ and structures of power that others had spun?

Mossadu was the local name for the foreign (white) mercenaries a la Israel’s intelligence agency, The British Mossadu’ also participated in dropping grenades in cocktail glasses taken from the Officer’s Mess in Trincomalee Harbour on innocent civilians according to a British Diplomat.

Although the role of Indian Intelligence agencies in Sri Lanka’s ethnic war’ is well known, also given the ‘Indian Peace Keeping Forces’ intervention 1987-90, the role of British agents was a well-kept secret. So too, the shadowy role of Israel’s Mossad, which had leaked out in a book by an Israel Intelligence officer that led to the ‘The Mossad Report.

Western Special Forces and mercenaries entered Sri Lanka as part of a proxy war on India in the geostrategic island nation, given India’s alignment with Communist Russia/USSR.  India’s intelligence agency, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), operations had included setting up of Tamil militant groups in northeast Sri Lanka—in order to ward off any US military base in Trincomalee in a geostrategic theater called Sri Lanka. The setting up of the Voice of America Station in Iranavilla after JRJ came to power clearly set off alarm bell in Delhi.

The Weaponization of linguistic tensions among Sinhalas and Tamils began after the US-backed President J.R. Jayawardena came to power, unseating the Socialist Delhi-aligned Sirimavo Bandaranaike regime in 1977.

Mossadu” Weaponizing Religion? Staging a Buddhist-Islam Clash of Civilizations?

Long sustaining ties among Tamils and Muslim communities in the Eastern Province were systematically targeted and damaged during counterterrorism” operations in the second decade of armed conflict when Israel’s Mossad ran riot. The STF training camps were located in the highly multicultural Eastern Province, where Mossad agents, highly experienced in Israeli State counterterrorism’ operations against Muslim and Christian populations in Palestine weaponized religious differences.

Inter-and intra-religious conflicts proliferated. Staged massacres such as the Kathankudi Mosque and retaliations led to the mass expulsion of Muslims who had once fought alongside the LTTE against the State, in 1991, from Jaffna and the northern province. The counter-terrorism operations run by white mercenaries and Special Operations Forces also aimed to divided and weakened the LTTE’s Eastern and Northern command.

Miller provides a detailed account about the sundering of close ties between Muslims and Tamils in the East. Mossad continues to this day to be present in Batticaloa operating among Muslim communities where Saudi slush funds circulate among politicians. A characteristic of Mossad attacks is targeting Christian communities and then blaming Muslims, in order to create ‘cascades of violence’ as also happened recently in the occupied Golan Heights when a children’s playground in Majdal Shams, a Druze (Christian), area was targeted.

The Easter Sunday 2019 attacks on luxury hotels and churches were designed to stage Cascades of Violence”, with the endgame being a Buddhist-Islam Clash of Civilizations. The I2U2 or the India-Israel and United States United Arab Emirates in the new US mischief in the Indian Ocean region to cause a Clash of Civilizations between Islam and Hinduism and drown the Asian 21st Century.

During the mysterious ISIS-claimed Easter Sunday attacks in 2019 the even more mysterious Zion Church in Batticaloe was targeted, seemingly, an own goal mission. Four Chinese marine scientists were also killed in the attacks at Kingsbury Hotel and a joint research expedition with the National Aquatic agency (NARA), on a Chinese research vessel Shi Yan-3 was then aborted. The incoming US ambassador, Elizabeth Horst, is on record stating at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee earlier this year that it is the highest priority of the US government to prevent Chinese research expeditions in Sri Lanka! The CIA and Mossad work closely together.

Mossad agents were and are also present in many coastal areas where there was a great deal of land-grabbing after the 2004 Asia Tsunami Disaster to monitor the Submarine Datea Cable routes and the Surfing Zones of Arugam Bay along Sri Lanka’s strategic Indian Ocean coastline that was also hit by undersea nuclear explosions that triggered the Indian Ocean Tsunami Disaster in 2004 off the Coast of Aceh, Indonesia as Cold War on China heated up the Indian Ocean region.

The I2U2 Set up to weaponized religions?

Hence, too the local refrain among multicultural border communities in Sri Lanka where I did ethnographic research in the late nineties, that the armed conflict was Someone Else’s War”, and the UTHR book of the same name.

Connecting the Dots: From Gladio to SEATO, Cold War Economic Shocks in the Post Colony

It is remarkable that the worst ‘ethno-religious’ violence, such as the Pogrom of 1983 happened in Ceylon/ Sri Lanka when liberal pro-Western, United National Party (UNP) governments were in power. Hybrid shocks like July 1983 debilitated the economy, triggered out-migration and brain drain, and enabled deep penetration of government institutions by external intelligence and other economic experts’ also for neoliberal economic reform.

This included penetration of the security and legal systems, NED-funded civil society and research organizations in the post/colony, as well as cover up ‘investigations’ to conceal the external Masterminds” or mahamolakaru” of hybrid-war style Disasters like the 2019 Easter Sunday Carnage, also to enable Disaster Capitalism as Naomi Klein termed it in The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism”.

Global-local networks of crime and intelligence game the narrative ex-post a System-Shock and effectively conceal the Mastermind, increasingly AI driven complex systems analysis. At this time Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has set up an office in the Office of the President of Sri Lanka to game the Data and the Narrative—in the wake of the staged Default and IMF takeover of Sri Lanka’s Economic Sovereignty and Policy Autonomy in April 2022, claiming that the country was ‘bankrupt’ simply because it lacked ‘exorbitantly privileged US dollars”.

The Gladio ‘stay behind” model used in Europe were certainly used in Ceylon / Sri Lanka which remained a British Dominion until 1972, as elsewhere in the Afro-Asian post/colony where Assassinations, Coups, protests for regime change and other Shock to Make the Economy Scream” were carried out as part of Cold War proxy wars by retreating Western imperial powers anxious to retain their influence, economic and security interest in the post/colony.

Gladio was the code name for a multi-country, anti-Communist operation that ran in Europe after World War 2, when the UK and the US decided to create stay-behind”  paramilitary organizations with the official aim of countering and containing Communist Russia/ Soviet Union also through sabotage and guerrilla warfare ‘behind enemy lines’. Gladio’s clandestine cells” were stay-behind (SB) units, created with the experience and involvement of former Special Operations Forces Officers. Operation Gladio is detailed in the important work of Swiss Historian, Daniele Ganser titled Gladio: NATO’s Stay Behind Army”.

Along with Gladio operations, Partition and or ethnic conflict to Divide and Rule was the other tried and tested exit-strategy of the British Empire to ensure continued influence in the post/colony to imperial economic and security interests. This pattern is particularly evident in South Asia and Palestine which were partitioned ensuring Britain’s continued sway beyond putative Independence in 1947. Ceylon of course remained a British Dominion” albeit with the façade of ‘Independence’ until 1972 when the country really achieved Independence with the adoption of the First Republican constitution under a Socialist Government.

Institutions like the Southeast Asian Treaty Organization (SEATO), similar to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Europe, as well as, the Australian Security Intelligence Organization (ASIO), were also set up to contain Communism during the Cold War. As well, they served to stem de-colonization, national liberation and Independence movements in the Third World, and sabotage Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), countries in order to sustain Euro-American interests in the post/colony. SEATO was set up in 1954 by US President Eisenhower and headquartered in Bangkok, Thailand, to help run internal proxy wars in South and Southeast Asia, including Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Burma, even as Buddhism and Islam were weaponized.

Eisenhower would later warn the American people and incoming president John. F. Kennedy who was assassinated in what is widely believed to be a Secret Service inside job in September 1963, about the US military business industrial complex being the greatest threat to Democracy in America (rather than Communist Russia or China).

According to the CIA authorized Story of SEATO[1]

Freedom must be defended in every quarter. Each collective security organization has its own character. SEATO, NATO, CENTRO, and other groups have been designed to meet particular situations in various parts of the world for the threat of Communism is worldwide.”

In September of 1954, the United States, France, Britain, New Zealand, Australia, the Philippines, Thailand and Pakistan had formed the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization, or SEATO. The purpose of the organization was to prevent communism from gaining ground in the region given the ‘Domino Theory’ regarding the spread of Soviet influence. So too, the Central Treaty Organization (CENTO), formerly known as the Middle East Treaty Organization (METO) and known as the Baghdad Pact, was a US led military alliance of the Cold War in West Asia. It was formed on 24 February 1955 with Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. The alliance was dissolved on 16 March 1979.  ASIO was set up in Australia.

In such a context, the JVP and LTTE conflicts with the de-colonizing State in Sri Lanka ensured the socio-economic under- and de-development of the strategic Indian Ocean island. What emerged was an economic development model of and for colonial dependency on the Imperial West, for markets and products, sans technology transfers. The ‘economic reforms” inaugurated when J.R. Jayawardena came to power with the riots of 1977 to ‘Make the Economy Scream’, like the ISIS-claimed terror which hit the country in 2019 .in the form of hybrid economic war attacks on hotels and tourism also laid the groundwork for the current IMF USD-Eurobond Default and purported ‘bankruptcy” of Sri Lanka.

They are not growing roses and waterlilies in those 800 US military bases around the world!

‘Deception, misdirection, and obfuscation –

all key traits of a successful Sri Lankan politician’

– 13 August 2024, EconomyNext (Another US Embassy Service of the Lips)

This ee reconnoiters the intriguing monotony behind the capitalist media’s name-calling and attacks on Sri Lanka, and the link between the owners of so-called social media and the country’s debt bondage. We examine the interlocking between the ‘owners’ of Sri Lanka’s debt and such sexy tech companies like Googleee also highlights the role Facebook, et al play in promoting brain drain, as well as interfering in the country’s internal affairs. And, why not? The ruling oligarchy is deeply mired in the white world, and indebted to them.

This week’s revelation by the Election Commissioner about a fraudulent website, hosted on a US-based Google server, with links circulated via WhatsAppX and other messaging platforms points to  the usual CIA playbook. The news also coincides with the US government’s purported attempt to break up Alphabet Google’s ‘illegal’ monopoly over online searches (which will only create deeper monopolies). This ee also tries to show the constant concentration of capital, and the links between monopoly capitalism and the state. Indeed, English news about Sri Lanka invariably prioritizes news by BBCCNNBloomberg, etc…, which spits out the same drivel over and over again. Then again, why not? They cannot very well sum up, after 500 years and more of invasion, that they owe Sri Lanka.

The internet was ostensibly initiated and still belongs to the US government (more precisely its war-making wings). For example, Facebook’s first investor Peter Thiel (who like Twitter’s Elon Musk arose out of white South African & Namibian mining finance) has very deep ties to the US military – he set up Palantir, a major weapons dealer and surveillance firm, whose first institutional backer was the CIA. He also exerts a deep influence on US politics (Trump’s running mate JD Vance was hired by Thiel at Mithril Capital, and Thiel was Vance’s main financial backer in his 2022 Senate campaign). Let us reiterate once more, there is only one party in the USA – the Capitalist Party – no matter how many fancy wings (Republican, Democrat, Left, Right) it arrays.

Their media monopolies inevitably frame and select a colonized country’s priorities, let alone insist on naming the roots of our discontent – refusing to look at the sabotage of any attempt at modern industrialization, which alone can resurrect the economy. Their monopoly becomes more evident in capitalist elections, which are a big business for the capitalist media – the major immediate beneficiary of the rupees, dollars and pounds that flow at elections, along with the ink, electronic and other, paper and cloth…Such media are at the mercy of such ‘fast-moving’ consumer goods’ retailers like Unilever and Proctor & Gamble, linked to slavish plantations around the world, who run the ad agencies, and thereby promote diversionary sensationalism, instead of focusing on land, labor, and national liberation.

Corruption is their cry and yet this is surely nothing new:

The will of the capitalist is certainly to take as much as possible.

What we have to do is not to talk about his will, but to enquire into

his power, the limits of that power, and the character of those limits.

– Karl Marx, 1865.

The media would rather waste our time on the promises of decadent merchants and moneylenders – the market minorities imposed on the country to extend the long nightmare of colonialism and its import-export plantation fraud.  Yet, the country can only rise, with where the country’s wealth truly lies – in its fertile land and skilled labor:

‘We must not base our orientation on the strata of society

which are no longer developing, however predominant,

but on those strata which are developing and have a future,

even though they are not yet predominant.’

– J. V. Stalin, 1938.

Samagi Jana Balawegaya’s (SJB) presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa says that he will be initiating a recovery program for the country’s economy with the help of foreign aid after his presidential election victory.

Speaking at a public rally in Bandaragama, he highlighted that true development means the welfare and development of the people.

For us, the development means the development of 2.2 million people in this country, not just statistics”, said Premadasa.

He further criticized the current government for its focus on personal gains while neglecting the needs of 22 million citizens who are struggling.

As the election approaches, they make misleading promises, attempting to deceive the populace. It is not impossible to deceive the people of the country at the moment”, he added.

Support us in creating a new era of development for everyone. We are committed to addressing and resolving the country’s issues with the help of foreign aid”, he said.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe emphasized the importance of strengthening economic cooperation and regional integration from Japan to India, with a special focus on deepening ties with India. The President made these remarks while addressing the Head of State Session of the 3rd Voice of Global South Summit, held under the theme “An Empowered Global South for a Sustainable Future.”

Speaking from the President’s House in Anuradhapura virtually yesterday (17), President Wickremesinghe highlighted Sri Lanka’s strategic commitment to expanding economic partnerships across Asia, particularly through the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC). The President noted that as the Bay of Bengal region emerges as a hub of economic growth, the significance of BIMSTEC continues to rise. Sri Lanka, as a member, seeks closer economic integration with India and is exploring economic cooperation agreements extending from Japan to India.

The conference, chaired by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, brought together heads of state from various countries. During his address, President Wickremesinghe praised India’s efforts to strengthen the Global South, acknowledging that the West can no longer maintain its dominance in global leadership. He lauded the Voice of the Global South Summit as a crucial platform for fostering consensus on challenges facing developing nations.

Reflecting on Indo-Sri Lankan relations, the President emphasized the “Vision” statement shared between the two nations, which celebrates their historical cooperation and lays the foundation for future collaboration. He expressed optimism that this vision will lead to stronger integration between Sri Lanka and India across various sectors.

President Wickremesinghe also expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Modi and the people of India for their support during Sri Lanka’s recent economic crisis. The President acknowledged that India’s assistance played a vital role in helping Sri Lanka navigate the challenges of the past two years and emerge from bankruptcy.

President Wickremesinghe further elaborated,
“Your Excellencies, Sri Lanka thanks India for hosting the third virtual seminar on Voices of the Global South. This series enables us to engage with each other to understand our different viewpoints while also helping us arrive at a common stance on many issues confronting the South. We have reached a point where the West can no longer dominate global leadership and, furthermore, has become part of the problem. Ukraine and Gaza are prime examples, which I will not address as they have already been discussed by previous speakers. In this context, we must appreciate India’s efforts to strengthen the Global South.

Your Excellencies, let me speak a few words about my country. Sri Lanka has reached agreements with the Official Creditor Countries, the Export-Import Bank of China, the IMF, the World Bank, and the ADB to emerge from bankruptcy. At this stage, I must acknowledge the generosity of Prime Minister Modi and India, whose contributions made it possible for us to survive the two years of bankruptcy, which imposed a heavy burden on our people. The Vision Statement agreed upon by both our countries outlines the path for closer relations, emphasizing our 2,000-year history of cooperation. This will ultimately lead to deeper integration between our nations across many sectors.

We will be finalizing the Comprehensive Economic and Technological Agreement. We will also inaugurate connectivity in power, transport, and land, and we will focus on the development of Trincomalee Harbour, among other projects we have agreed upon. These efforts will help us upgrade our knowledge and technology, enabling us to move towards a digital economy. I must express my gratitude to India for the assistance it has provided.

I must also mention the Bay of Bengal, which is becoming a growth centre, with BIMSTEC gaining increasing importance. As a member of BIMSTEC, Sri Lanka, with its close economic integration with India, seeks membership in the RCEP, aiming to establish economic cooperation agreements from Japan to India. We recognize the Bay of Bengal as essential for the development of our economies.

Given that many of the topics I intended to address have already been covered by previous speakers, I would only like to mention that the post-1989 era, started with the collapse of the Soviet Union, which was dominated by such views as the clash of civilization and the end of history, which highlighted the dominance of the Western system, has now coming to an end. This summit, along with similar gatherings, the expansion of BRICS, and the expansion of the G20, will pave the way for a new order where the Global South will leave a lasting legacy. I must thank India, which, since its independence, has worked to unite Afro-Asian countries and for the role it continues to play in forging closer unity among all of us. Thank you.

PART VII: OF THE MYTH OF MALIMAWA: A COMPASS WITHOUT THE MAGNETIC NEEDLE

August 17th, 2024

1. Ranil’s Strategic Maneuvers

A. RW- masquerading as the savior

RW was offered the Premiership by GR in April 2022, Finance portfolio in July 2022, made President by the majority of Pohottuwa MPs in July 2022; it was GR and Pohottuwa who jointly created a Frankenstein, knowing very well RW’s shadowy past since 1977 and how the UNP supported the Galle Face Protest. We have documented that dark history in our earlier writings. Pohottuwa accepted him as the leader of their parliamentary group, Head of State and Government, and their savior in the face of murderous onslaught of protesters; RW has saved not only their lives; he has paid compensation for their property destroyed by the goons.

At the last stages of GR’s tenure, police and security forces did not take any action against the protesters. A government MP Madura Vithanage disclosed in the Parliament on 7 July 2024 that on 31 May 2022 when the protesters besieged GR’s private residence at Mirihana he, as requested by GR had telephoned the then Army Commander to take preventive action against the protesters, (blocking roads using armored vehicles was the request made by him), but he was told that it was a political matter” and to quell  the protest using their own club wielding party supporters.

This statement begs a few explanations: why the Commander-in-Chief ask an ordinary MP to speak to the then Army Commander instead him talking direct to him or Secretary/ Defense? Can an ordinary MP suggest the Army Commander the action he should take in such a situation? How can the Army Commander suggest to incite party supporters to take the law into their hands? Was it a political matter” that had happened at Mirihana on 31 May 2022? Have the protesters besieged President’s private residence to hold a political rally?

If this statement is correct it is a very contentious and a dangerous one; can an Army Commander suggest such a foolish act? Is not the duty and responsibility of the army top brass to safeguard the security of the President and the State? Was it a suggestion made to hasten the triggering of the conspiracy already hatched, had Madura Vithanage acted accordingly?

By a very strange coincidence Vithanage’s statement did not receive the attention it deserves either of SJB, NPP, foreign-funded NGO cabal or bourgeois press (columnists and editorialists). No one, including those hawks who visit the CID as to perform purification rites at a drop of a hat lodged a complaint. Vithanage can safely sing cradlesongs for the amusement of his new leader RW.

With this digression we come back to our main narrative; SLPP accepted portfolios under RW; the worst was done by Dinesh Gunawardena who is from a different party accepting the premiership; the man who was removed by GR immediately after his remarks made during his marketing spree at Delkanda Pola, Susil Premjayanth was appointed as the Leader of the House; it is very interesting to note that RW did not accommodate SLPP seniors in the Cabinet of Ministers; before long  some SLPP Ministers and State Ministers became clamorous spokespersons of RW. The strangest happening was those SLPP seniors who were not accommodated in the Cabinet of Ministers by RW, joining RW in his Presidential Election campaign abandoning the SLPP.

RW from the day of his ascendancy to the top post began pursuing his own agenda, what he could not accomplish as PM on several occasions at the expense of the SLPP.

It is none other than the SLPP leadership who is responsible for the present predicament of the SLPP. Before they proposed the name of RW for the Presidency (as there wasn’t a single UNP MP in the Parliament) and voted and elected him as the President, SLPP leadership should have signed a MOU with RW for a minimum programme and giving RW critical support, in other words reaching a compromise knowing his satanic past – not to support his anti-national bills as it was common knowledge that RW would not accede to carry out SLPP programme.  But alas! SLPP supported all his anti-national bills, including the controversial Electricity Bill, Gender Equality Bill etc. despite MR’s letter dated May 12 sent to RW, against the divestiture of profit-making SOEs and requesting him to stop such action until the conclusion of the next Presidential Elections. But MR himself voted for the Electricity Bill and negated what he himself had written.

This confirmed the impression that RW and SLPP are having a grand political honeymoon, cruising together in a luxury yacht in the Mediterranean, despite some muscle flexing antics by Basil R, orchestrated for the benefit of gossip savvy media.Basil Rwas not able to get acquiescenceof RW for conducting Parliamentary Elections before the Presidential Elections. A shrewd politician RW knew how to woo the SLPP parliamentarians who have not completed the stipulated period to enjoy pension rights.

In this context Basil R’sstatement made at a Kalutara felicitation meeting, bayath nae; nayatha nae” (we are neither afraid nor in debt) became meaningless as it was RW who is in debt to SLPP and the person who should be afraid of losing SLPP support.  If our politicians know something about our ancient Buddhist canons, RW would have re-joined: I have redeemed a loan; now I can offer a loan; I have left behind a treasure”, as stated by the Bodhistva parrot king in Salikaedara  Jatakaya”.

It was evident since many months ago that at an election a large number of Pohottuwa MPs would switch their allegiance to RW; before the nomination day this number multiplied dayby day in an unprecedent scale with diehard Mahinda loyalists switching allegiance to RW as they were caught in a bush fire.

In all meetings he addressed RW expressed that people should not forget the hardships endured in 2022, due to shortages of essential items such as fuel, gas, fertilizer, medicine; mentioned about calamitous circumstances people faced, foreign exchange scarcity, shortages and queues when he assumed leadership having only a single seat in the Parliament. He repeated all the other party leaders declined to accept leadership given on a platter. He was the only one who took up the challenge when others fled; he claimed that he himself was the savior and reiterated that he should be given another chance to continue the unfinished job.

RW says that he has revived agricultural activities, boosting production; bolstered revenue streams, strengthened the rupee and facilitated economic resurgence; he warns if we fail to rectify this and transition to a new economic paradigm we risk sliding back into economic turmoil; he creates a monster and shows its dreadfulness to the people; says Sri Lanka emerged from bankruptcy and was been able to agree upon debt repayment plans. His oft-repeated chansons full of poetic renditionswel Paalama” (vine bridge), Grusha and Caucasian ChalkCircle”,wankagiriya” (labyrinth) and the latest addition Titanic” keep the people in bewilderment, whether it is fantasy or reality.

In his Address to the Nation on 26 June RWsaid that Sri Lanka received an opportunity to repay loans on concessional terms with an extended period until 2043; Sri Lanka could now defer all bilateral loan installment payments until 2028. He said that development work which was halted are set to commence; can initiate new development projects; he demonstrated that he is capable of doing and have confidence to do so; said that he successfully elevated the country from bankruptcy and economic turmoil to a position that astonished the world; said that he had safely guided the child named Mother Sri Lanka through treacherous waters; this speech was like a clarion call for his Presidential Election campaign and showed futility of campaigns of Sajith Premadasa and Anura Kumara.

I pose a critical question. Will you move forward with me, who comprehended the problem from its inception, offered practical solutions and delivered results? Or will you align with those grappling in the dark still struggling to grasp the issues? Will you stay the course towards a brighter future for yourself and the nation? Or will you opt for a different path? We all are aware of the perils of veering off course or choosing the wrong path. Therefore, make the right decision.”

At Matara rally on 30 June Ekwa Jaya Gamu, Api Matara” (Victory through Unity), organised by SLPP Young Turks, again RW highlighted his efforts over the past two years; he underscored the need for collective commitment of all to propel the nation’s political journey; he said, I have safely brought the Titanic to the port; while other captains fled from the iceberg, we took a critical decision; sink or navigate to safety; now that we have reached the port; the question is what to do next with this ship; he blamed the other contenders; that they are not fit to hold any responsible position; When the President resigns and the ruling party fails to act, it falls upon the opposition to step in. Yet everyone evaded responsibility”. He said that he was the only person who shouldered the responsibility.

Clearly, he laid a trap; If any party possesses an alternative approach, I am willing to facilitate discussions with the IMF for them. The government is willing to make arrangements to provide travel permits, necessary funds for travel and accommodation for these discussions, he said at Matara. We can no longer afford to revert to old politics; do we have an alternative future? Can we afford to return to the days of long queues and traditional politics?” He repeated the same thing on 2 July in Parliament that he can make arrangements to meet Finance Ministers, in the countries mentioned by SP, Ghana, Argentina etc.

RW reaffirms,  to take the country forward we no longer can make experiments; this is not a time to play bringing this person or the other; I have brought the country to a transformative stage only thinking about the country; if this government is replaced with any other there will be a severe crisis again; this should be avoided.”

Has RW done any miracle other than accepting dictates of the IMF and complying with IMF conditions and acting accordingly? It is well known that he has agreed to highly objectionable conditions of IMF.

Would the voters listen to these urban myths? This is a country which chased out the President who gave political leadership to defeat Tamil Tiger terrorists in 2005. Many say that we have short memories, although this writer does not subscribe to this idea, because we are a nation who have a rich historical memory and a cultural memory. But the neocons and neoliberals who are at the helm and various segments of the middle class who follow the former blindly want to keep the status quo.

The other important aspect is, this country having a surfeitof political parties, did not support even the war efforts, tried every trick in their book to scuttle the war efforts; even tried to defeat the budget. This criticism is also levelled against RW’s UNP and his loyal lieutenantsat the time. Just recall the notoriousutterances of Karunanayaka (Kilinochchi-Medawachchi: Alimankada-Pamankada binary), Kiriella (any bull can wage war”), Samaraweera (army commander is fit to be the commander of Salvation Army”), and RW himself (Toppigala is a jungle”). We do not see even a remote possibility major party leader joining the callof RW to unite, except three-wheeler parties”. These realignments are being witnessed daily. It is a futile call since all think that they are poised for victory; when they see the finishing line running solowhy shouldthey join in a relay and share the spoils?

B. Ranil’s strategic maneuvers in the economic front

Using public funds, RW began to give away various handouts and poor relief to different segments of the society. As they are legion it is not necessary to list down what they are and commenting on the viability and practicability of such acts, as almost all are aimed at the upcoming Presidential Election. But making some observations about some proposals which are detrimental to the country in the long run is important.

Under Urumaya land grants, giving freehold land title deeds was lauded by RW supporters, but it will result in pauperization of the peasantry and adding more numbers to landless lot as there is an inducement to sell land. This was what the Americans needed by their abortive agreements.

RW met Bishop of Mannar in mid-June and discussed development of Point Pedro, Mullaitivu as renewable energy hubs, power connectivity and land connectivity with India, plans to develop Mannar as a tourist hub, development of   Mannar Fort to attract cruise ship tourists. This manifests the prominence he has given to so-called connectivity death trap laid by India.

RW while attending the opening of a Sea Water Desalinization Plant, promised a River to Jaffna” to provide water to the Northern Peninsula; this proposal was in the pipeline for nearly 5 or 6 decades. He also promised to introduce drip irrigation as it is a new concept; he did not tell how to get water for drip irrigation. All Presidential candidates promise to introduce many things thinking they are novel concepts; these do goodies try to invent the wheel not knowing that the wheel was invented many centuries ago, in this case several decades ago.

Proliferation of Smart classrooms” has reached an epidemic level as many Presidential candidates think that it is the main drawback in our school system. Education Minister on behalf of RW, announced the creation of Entrepreneurship Circles” in 3000 schools as part of the first phase aimed at fostering school-level entrepreneurs. Now RW, SP, Anura Kumara all talk about Entrepreneurship. Where were they all this time? JVP destroyed factories, transformers and Agricultural Service Centers. UNP governments destroyed state industries under its privatization programme and local level handloom and power loom industries.

RW says transformation of Sri Lanka to an export-driven economy is imperative; both SP and Anura Kumara repeat the same. Creating an export-driven economy was in the top of the agenda of development initiatives cherished by many policy makers and governments and there is nothing new in these dreams of new born babies.

RW said that he is going to identify areas occupied by plantation workers and designate these areas as new settlement villages at a special discussion held on 17 July. Not to be outdone Premadasa promises to make plantation workers entrepreneurs – tea smallholders providing them with tea lands; we do not know how he is going to do it. Is he going to fragment big tea plantations? This will provide with a death warrantto lush tea plantations in the hill country. These were the people who opposed vehemently nationalization of foreign owned tea plantations alleging that nationalization of plantations would kill the hen who lays golden eggs. Later when they came into power, they formed cluster companies and as the next step state owned plantations were handed over to capitalist management companies by CBK.

These politicians first, should understand how the tea small sector grew overtime. There is a scheme already in existence introduced since 2008 called Revenue Sharing Model (RSM) in some state-owned plantations.  A part of tea estate land given to workers to grow, pluck and sell green leaf to the company.

The danger of these short-sighted proposals is making the so-called Mallaiyaha Tamils” into an antagonistic force in the hill country, fighting for their ‘liberation”. Already it is being carried out with the blesings of Julie Chung, so-called Rama Trail” and establishing massive Sita Amman kovils in the Central Highlands.

Increasing fixed deposit interest of senior citizens to 10% (senior citizens are aware that it was this government which reduced the interest rate from 15% to 8.5%), is a mere eyewash to hoodwink them.

C. Ranil’s strategic maneuvers in the political front

RW began his political manipulations by appointing some of his loyalists as Governors, the worst was the appointing of a Thondaman as Governor of the Eastern Province.

In July 2023 a conference was organised to update the parliament party leaders on the National Reconciliation Programme and North East Development Plan; RW said collective discussions among all parties are necessary to decide in granting police powers to Provincial Councils; RW proposed arrangements that would allow members of Provincial Councils to concurrently hold position and be appointed as MPs, while MPs could also hold position as members of Provincial Councils; his recent utterings reveal that he has not deviated from this stance. This will make provincial affairs and parliamentary affairs a mockery, making provincial affairs an appendage of the legislature, creating more power wielders at provincial level. RW is under pressure from Modi to implement the 13th Amendment. Now there is a competition between RW, SJB and NPP about full implementation of the 13th Amendment. It was UNP, JVP and TNA indefinitely postponed Provincial Councils elections in 2017. Provincial Councils are now being controlled by RW through Governors appointed by him. Visiting North and East he said that in this country we have 10 governments, 9 of which are Provincial governments”. He cannot say like this unless he is going to break Sri Lanka into 10 states.

Gender based bills: Womens’ Empowerment Bill and Gender Equality Bill; the former was introduced by Anupa Pasqual of Yuthukama Group , State Minister of Social Empowerment;according to Julie Chung’s ‘X’message dated 18 Juneshe had met withAnupa Pasqual at the US Embassy along with Madura Vithanage , SLPP MP, Dulles Alahapperuma MP (now changed his allegiance to SJB) and some other SJB MPs. Gender Equality Bill is said to be a joint effort of Women’s Parliamentary Caucus; they including Harini Amarasuriya of NPP were sent to New Zealand on a study tour funded by USAID with the blessings of Julie Chung. RW made a statement in the Parliament on 18 June concerning the Gender Equality Bill; proposed a Parliamentary Select Committee to review Supreme Court determination as it has determined the bill was inconsistent with the constitution, would require both a parliamentary special majority and a referendum. RW referred to it as judicial cannibalism”; Harini Amarasuriya of NPP said that it was a weak draft bill filled with vague clauses which was the reason why the Supreme Court has determined it was inconsistent with the constitution.

RW attempted to extend the term of Attorney General for another 6 months on the pretext of his services would have to be retained in view of the Easter Sunday probe and X-Press Pearl issue; but was scuttled by the Constitutional Council.

RW providing funds under decentralized budget to opposition MPs; alleged to have given bar permits to some.

Using Local Government polls candidates in state-funded development activities.

RW in July 2023 gave presidential pardon to 2 convicted Tigers, serving a jailterm in the Central Bus Station bomb attack on 31 January 1966, which claimed the lives of 91 persons. One of them was sentenced to 200 years imprisonment and the other life imprisonment; he also pardoned LTTE cadres who bombed the Central Bank in 1996.

RW began forging alliances firstly with SLFP breakaway group Ministers, State Ministers and MPs and secondly with PohottuwaMinisters, State Ministers and MPs and the so-called New Alliance” and other Pohottuwa anti Rajapaksa groups in a subtle way; diehard Mahinda loyalists of SLPP drifted towards him astoundingly breaking ties with MR and Basil R. We witnessed a grand spectacle in which SLPP MPs and former SLPP Ministers (men and women) who vilified, denigrated and disparaged RW joining him en masse as what was said and done by them had happened in a previous birth. This tide began with a significant number of Pohottuwa Ministers and MPs pledging their support to RW at Ekwa Jayagamu” public meetings held at various cities.

It is said by now around 100 out of 145 MPs elected on SLPP ticket have decamped. All these MPs decamped for their own sake to be re-elected as MPs at the next General Elections. Almost all these MPs were elected in 2020 thanks to MR. If the SLPP hierarchy has taken any action against the SLPP dissidents initially, as the SJB did, it could have halted this situation without allowing it to grow as anepidemic. MR’s saloon door policy” did work against him this time.

RW succeeded in forging alliances with EPDP, whose leader Douglas Devananda opposed the idea of fielding a common Tamil candidate declaring that it is not beneficial to Tamil community, inimical to the interests of Tamil community; Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP), State Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanth (Pillaiyan) expressed solidarity and confirmed his support for RW. He was seen wrapping RW with a Ponnadai” (golden robe) and garlanding him with a huge garland; KarunaAmman and VillayaindranMP for Batticaloa also pledged his support; RW was able to woo certain leaders of the plantation workers. Just before the nominations and soon after the nominations some SJB key figures and Muslim MPs switched their alliance to RW defying their party leaders. Tamil (including plantations) and Muslim political parties and some old buddies like Ranawaka pledging support to Premadasa do not portray a significant political advantage to him as they all supported Premadasa in 2019 also; it should be stated that with their votes Premadasa obtained only 5,564,239 votes (or 41.99%).Only new faces in his alliance” are those who left the SLPP whereas RW leads a broader alliance” than his former ally.

Sarath Fonseka had met with RW regarding a foreign exchange matter, believed to be what SF had received in the run-up for the 2010 Presidential Elections; RW was the Chief Guest at the launch of SF’s book on 28 June; paying SF a glowing tribute RW highlighted SF’s  ability to contribute significantly to the country’s future. He did not forget to remind that it was the yahapalana regime, he as the Prime Minister promoted him to the rank of Field Marshal; SF breaking away from SJB and contesting at the forthcoming Presidential Elections are interpreted as the work of a vote breaker proxy candidate.

RW addressing issues of unity in a coalition, demonstrates that he is committed to unity for the nation’s interest; encourages other political parties to join in this initiative. Regardless of political affiliations what is foremost is the country’s success has become his catchword; he extends an invitation to opposition urging them to prioritize national interests over partisan politics.

D. Culture

Not a single candidate is interested in culture. Sometime back Anura Kumara announced at a meeting held at Uda Dumbara that there are no Sinhala films in Netflix. This was the way he identified our cultural problems. Mao said: An army without culture is a dull-witted army, and a dull-witted army cannot defeat the enemy”. We change this to, a political party without culture is a party of hooligans and thugs”.

E. Internationally

By entering various connectivity” programmes with India RW is attempting to make Sri Lanka, a vassal state of India; doing so RW is trying to achieve two things: coming into the orbit of influence of India and thereby becoming a partner in QUAD activities in the Indian Ocean Region. This stance is good for him in the long run. RW had told the Indians that (in his visit to India) Sri Lankan territory will not be used against India; RW and Modi had discussed the question of Chinese presence in Sri Lanka; India protested to China’s research vessel Yuang Yung in2023, calling it a spy ship; to reassure India Sri Lanka on July 18, 2023, 2 days before RW’s visit to India announced a new standard operating procedure” for future port calls by foreign research vessels; but allowed Indian naval ship (INS) Khanjar to visit Trinco on 29 July, 2023 to take part in several training programmes with a crew of 151; it was welcomed by Sri Lanka Navy; on 14 September, 2023 INS Nireekshak” arrived at the Trinco harbor with a crew of 137; was involved in diving training with Sri Lanka Navy Diving Unit.

Julie Chung, the US Ambassador to Sri Lanka as self-proclaimed Viceroy of Sri Lanka continues her meetings with government officials, including members of the Elections Commission, superior officers in the defense establishment, government Ministers and opposition MPs as she was given a carte blanche by the Foreign Minister and the President. This week she was seen touring the Southern Province. Visiting Kirinda Viharaya she rang its gantaraya (temple bell). What was announced? For Whom the Bell Tolls? Does it signify death? This is none other than abusing Buddhist rituals.

Visiting Indian Externa Affairs Minister Jaishankar in June discussed with all political parties and he reportedly said that it is important that India-funded projects such as renewable energy projects, including solar power projects, grid connectivity, land connectivity and proposed petroleum pipeline between India and Sri Lanka are not derailed by any incoming government, stressing the need to ensure that these projects continue under any incoming government after theupcoming Presidential polls. He hailed the pledge to fully implement 13th Amendment.

2. Ranil’s Machiavellian tricks

Rapid alignments and realignments of political forces has changed the political dynamism. On 29 JulySLPP announced that it has decided not to back RW’s candidature at the Presidential Elections and to field its own candidate instead and he will contest under Pohottuwa symbol. Until then there was speculation that SLPP was going to support RW and he having a very good chance of winning. But the situation changed dramatically as scores of SLPP MPs switching their allegiance to RW. With this can RW free himself from the derogatory term used by the capitalist media Ranil – Rajapaksa” is the biggest question. But all the rogues who were responsible for the downfall of GR are either with RW or with Premadasa; the other group including Viyathamaga” grandees also joined Premadasa and neither party can claim that they are free from Rajapaksa wrongdoers. Similarly, SJB cannot absolve itself from yahapalana political, economic and cultural crimes.

RW was the last man out of the three main contenders to enter the fray; his delay in announcing his candidature gave rise to many speculations; but he was the first candidate to pay the deposit at the Elections Office, this time as an independent candidate. This was a terrible setback to SLPP strategists.  Restoration of law and order, economic recovery even as an eyewash, getting the support of the majority of SLPP MPs defying MR and Basil R, are the stepping stones laid in front of RW.    Next question posed by some is can an independent candidate win a Presidential Election? This is not a serious obstacle to be reckoned with, as in 2015 Sirisena won usingan obscure symbol -Swan- of a more obscure wild card” political party not in mainstream politics except loaning its name and symbol to political outcasts.

SLPP MPs have aligned themselves with RW not to save the country, but in the name of their political future; to get elected as MPs and getting portfolios in the event of a RW victory. The biggest question is whether they can bring votes; they have made a big misjudgment that they were elected last time on their popularity forgetting it was because Rajapaksas, especially MR’s munificence. It was MR who brought votes to SLPP and as a result they were elected as MPs.

Same thing applies to SLPP dissidents who joined Premadasa; all these people will be swept away at a General Election. Those who were appointed as appointed MPs will fade into oblivion never to see them again. Only G. L. Peris, the Olympian pole-vaulter and a handful would get a national list slot from SJB. If RW loses SLPP dissidents will be the biggest losers. They will have to come back to SLPP fold to win at a General Election. They cannot contest as Independents or as UNPers as UNP no longer exists.

Why SLPP leader MR postponed his decision regarding the presidential candidate? He kept business magnate Dhammika Perera, the actor who was dressed in his stage costume until the Director finalizes the acts, scenes and actors in a peculiar political drama in which the script wasconcealed, embroiled in a guessing game.  Still everything is shrouded in a mystery; according to grapevine a massive campaign against him was being planned targeting his businesses; also, when the bats were abandoning the tree once full of juicy fruits, a person who has built up a massive business empire would not come forward to be a loser, having no SLPP loyalty and an established political network for himself.  Another interpretation was it was nothing more than showing a Goliath toincrease SLPP’s bargaining power with RW which went haywire. No doubt Namal R was a last-minute replacement. Fielding a candidate is beneficial to SLPP instead of allowing it to be decimated as a political force. This would augur well at the next parliamentary elections.

Initial mistake was done by the SLPP. At this juncture we do not discuss why GR handed over the reins of power to RW; what we ask is why SLPP supported every bill introduced by RW? They were reduced to a mere set of puppets or signal posts raising their hands to every bill RW introduced. They deprived themselves of their power base; did not know how to show their strength and bring RW to the negotiating table; instead SLPP forfeited its bargaining power. They did not realise that they gave the reins of power to a person who himself was a creator of the present crisis, the architect of foreign exchange crisis under yahapalana regime. As this was discussed many times by various analysts, we do not intend to discuss this matter any further.

This process began with SLFP breakaway group led by Nimal Siripala Silva and the alliance consisting of SLFP dissidents holding meetings at Ambalantota, Badulla and Wellawaya. SLFP was broken into three groups of which one group fielding a candidate at the Presidential Elections. This candidate has resigned from his cabinet portfolio; it seems that he is coming forward to help RW to break whatever votes one group of SLFP has in its bag.

Pohottuwa grandees began to address RW’s meetings held at Matara, Kandy, Galle and other places respectively at a time SLPP was toying with many options whether to support RW, or RW coming as the SLPP candidate or fielding their own candidate; this idea remained while some Pohottuwa grandees openly supporting RW’s candidature.

Addressing a meeting of print and electronic media heads on August 7, RW said that the other candidates are coming forward for the furtherance of their future whereas he has come to build up the future of the country and people. Since he has rescued the nation from a severe economic disaster,he has no contest with the other contestants. What is needed at the next Presidential Election is carrying forward this government’s economic programme as the only way forwardand heneeds a mandate from the people for it.

Addressing Kantha Ape Balaya” rally on 9 August, RW replied to his critics why he became a non-partisan candidate: The truth is that hunger is not political; regardless of party affiliations everyone experiences pangs of hunger. We must set aside our political differences and unite to address the needs of our people.”

From the day he became the President he was inviting the opposition MPs to join him for the sake of the country. To the gullible voter this can be appealing.  It sounds like something emanating from an auction house, do you want to go back to petrol, cooking gas and milk powder queues, power outages, shortages of pharmaceuticals and fertilizer”?  Sounds like a call from the messenger of death, makingthe gullible voter shivering in fear and anxiety. This reminds us how JR came into power in 1977 amplifying the agonies of an era of queues.

RW’s selection of gas cylinder as his symbol is a shrewder act than its symbolic value portraying the hardships people had to undergo as he reiterates in his rallies. There is every possibility of using this symbol in public places defying election laws.

At this juncture it is only RW who draws attention of the people to certain developments outside the shores; no other candidate is worried about what is happening in the international arena as it does not affect Sri Lanka. Soon after the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh by Israel Zionists, RW appointed three committees to address the national security and economic impacts that may affect Sri Lanka considering the political developments in the Middle East. At a meeting he announced that in such an event Sri Lanka would have to take measures to repatriate the migrant workers from the Middle East.

3. Bangladesh: Ranil’s uninvited guest?

As soon as we received the news related to the ouster of Sheik Hasina of Bangladesh, we thought that the developments in Bangladesh are very much advantageous to RW and he would exploit it in his Presidential campaign to hilt.

As expected RW on August 7, declared at a meeting of print and electronic mediaheads, if he has not undertaken this country Sri Lanka too would have ended up as Bangladesh. Although the protesters ousted the Prime Minister there was not any organization to take over. He made a very legal observation, an observation Western governments and media ignored for reasons known to them. RW remarked whether the appointment of Mohammad Yunus as the head of Interim government is constitutional. What he said was a member of the Parliament should have been given the opportunity; if a similar thing happened in Sri Lanka, we would not be able to hold Presidential Elections. He must have thought about the way he came to power! But we should not forget that he was the man with Sirisena who made Mohan Peiris, the Chief Justice evaporate– remarking that such a position did not exist – under yahapalana regime. In doing so he did not follow any correct procedure. As President, postponing local government elections he said that there wasn’t an election to postpone.

Only the men of the SJB bandwagon and electronic media openly supporting SJB are using Bangladesh events, just to attack NPP in general and Lal Kantha in particular.

Lal Kantha addressing a group of tax men on 6, August said that JVP’s plan to capture parliament in July 2022 went awry as some protesters and their leaders did not support it; his party wanted to do it, but it was not possible because others left the scene. According to him the so-called aragalaya failed as a result; although they were able to oust GR, they could not capture power; Rajapaksas made a comeback consolidating their power in the parliament, he said. This shows NPP politics, using others as hirelings for their work.

At the opening of the Special Operations Command of the Police Special Task Force on 12 August, RW capitalized the Bangladesh situation very effectively. He repeated that after taking over the government he had taken necessary steps to stabilize the economy and avert bankruptcy. (We forget for the time being that it was he, his Finance Minister and Governor of the Central Bank were the persons who declared Sri Lanka’s bankruptcy). He reminded again the situation two years ago, how the protesters seized public buildings, attempted to set fire to them and take control of the Parliament.  Due to the efforts of our armed forces and other law enforcement agencies we were able to prevent the capture of Parliament, he said. He described in detail the situation in Bangladesh, collapse of the Parliament, killing of MPs, key government functionaries have been forced to flee, hotels set on fire and destroyed and the situation in Bangladesh remains far from normal.

We should not forget that Ranil Wickremasinghe is The Child of Galle Face Protest”. He, UNP and his present advisers were with Galle Face Protesters; he proposed to provide facilities to the Galle Face urban ghetto; later he was instrumental in dismantling the Galle Face campsite and stopped NPPers storming the Parliament.

But we observe that RW is cautious in capitalizing the situation in Bangladesh as he does not want to antagonize his US and Western masters as now it has been revealed that the US was involved in the ouster of Sheik Hasina. In May, Sheik Hasina said that conspiracies are hatched to topple her government and alleged a white man’s plot” to carve a new Christian country” out of Bangladesh and if she had allowed a certain country to build an airbase in Bangladesh then she would have had no problem.

Deccan Herald” reported on 21 July that Sheik Hasina has said the Indian envoy in Bangladesh that anarchists in Bangladesh tried to create a Sri Lankan type mayhem to topple her government.

In her undelivered speech she revealed that she would have remained in power if she had surrendered the sovereignty of Saint Martin Island and allowed America hold sway over the Bay of Bengal”.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, I welcome the swearing of Dr. Mohammad Yunus to lead the interim government in Bangladesh. US supports his call for calm and peace”. Can Blinken say anything rather than welcoming their protégé, the man flown from Paris immediately as a puppet. (This is not the time to describe what type of a person Yunus is. Allegations against this so-called poor man’s banker and Nobel laureate are appalling). Galle Face Protesters wanted to anoint a Bar Association bigwig, an arch anti-nationalist, a reactionary and a darling of USAID as their interim President of Sri Lanka! The irony of the whole episode is an 84-year-old octogenarian leading an interim government in Bangladesh formed after a so-called Z- Gen Revolution”!  Earlier US State Department, UK and some other Western countries said Bangladesh elections held in January were not credible, free and fair”. Western countries expressed concerns over violation of human rights and press freedom under Hasina. The groundwork was prepared for her overthrow. Some US lawmakers in the Congress have urged sanctions on Bangladeshi officials over human rights abuses.

RW cannot denounce the attacks on Bangladeshi Hindus, their houses, businesses run by them and Hindu temples as he does not want to antagonize Muslims and Muslim fundamentalists in Sri Lanka on the eve of an election.

RW took more than a week to congratulate Mohammad Yunus. It was reported that the American puppet Yunus, in his telephone conversation with RW has requested RW to visit Bangladesh at the earliest opportunity and provide necessary guidance for the recovery of the country. Birds of a feather flock together!

Bangladesh Interim government appointed Ahsan H. Mansur, a former IMF official who has worked with the IMF for almost 3 decades as the Governor of the Central Bank. (Sri Lanka at the height of the crisis brought an IMF official as the Governor of the Central Bank.)  Bloomberg” on 13 July reported Ahsan H. Mansur’s appointment as bringing firepower to the team negotiating with multilateral lender for more funds to prevent foreign reserves from dwindling further”.

It was a sad spectacle the so-called Jana Aragalaya” Presidential aspirant appearing in a TV talk show who justified the ouster of Hasina adding, that Bangladesh people had chased away Prime Minister Hasina as she had pursued an IMF led agenda inimical to her country”. Think ahead and see what is happening around before making such ridiculous statements is the advice we can offer to these misinformed people. If it is so why did not, they begin a struggle against RW’s capitulation to IMF dictates?

According to e-Con e-News political analyst US will put up their military demands on Sri Lanka before the elections and failing to obtain will allow their ‘elements’ to run riot by claiming fraud as in Venezuela until the US strikes a deal and then wipe them out, getting rid of another generation. Remember in 2010 JVP cried computer jilmart”, but could not go any further. This time they have ex-servicemen and a digital platform” to run wild after the election. Who has provided the NPP with finances, resources and expertise for this extravagant digital platform, which claims a digital revolution” remains unanswered? There are certain politicians in Sri Lanka already claiming that the election is not going to be credible, free and fair”.

Do not forget that NPP stalwarts Vijitha Herath, Samarasinghe and Nalinda Jayatissa had met with US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Donald Lu on 13 May 2024. Julie Chung also took part in the discussions. Vijitha Herath received a memento from Lu. In her ‘X’ message Julie Chung had stated the discussion focused on Sri Lanka’s current economic situation, the intervention of the IMF, the conducting of free and fair elections and the security of the Indian Ocean region”.

Donald Lu and Julie Chung also met with Premadasa, Harsha de Silva, G. L. Peiris and a few more of the SJB, to discuss Sri Lanka’s upcoming elections and their perspectives on Sri Lanka’s economic recovery and their vision for the nation’s path forward”.

Economic Times” reported on August 9, as quoted in Indian Punchline”, citing Awami League sources that the hatchet man of the colour revolution in Bangladesh is none other than Donald Lu who visited Dhaka in mid May 2024. Indian Punchline” further adds that Donald Lu specialised in fueling and masterminding colour revolutions which led to regime changes in Albania, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan and the ouster of Imran Khan in Pakistan. (Imran Khan paid the prize as Pakistan abstained to vote against Russia). It is horrendous if one explores the treacherous history of this man named Lu.

There is a theory that Bangladesh will very soon become the next Afghanistan as influential Islamic religious groups such as Jamaat-e- Islami and Hefazat-e- Islam Bangladesh and terror groups like Jamaat-ul- Mujahedeen- Bangladesh (JMB) are actively participating in protests in Bangladesh.

Western narrative about Hasina’s ouster is exaggeratedwith criticizing Hasina’s security forces resorting to egregious levels of violence against peaceful protesters”; repressive action unleashed prompted the people rally around the protesters. Did GR resort to egregious levels of violence” against peaceful” protesters in Colombo for them to oust him? Why the protests were petered out when RW dismantled the Galle Face urban ghetto and prevented the storming of the Parliament? Answer is, whether there was violence against protesters or not Western imperialists use their pawns to achieve their goals.

Canada has become Sri Lanka’s whipping boy on “Tamil Genocide Monument

August 17th, 2024

Asoka Weerasinghe (Mr.)King Grove Crescent > Gloucester . Ontario. K1J 6G1 . Canada

17 August 2024

Your Excellency Eric Walsh
Canadian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka
33A, 5th Lane, Colpetty, Colombo 3
Sri  Lanka.

Your Excellency Eric Walsh:

What do you know?  I just read that Sri Lanka’s “Foreign Minister Summons Canadian HC to Register Sri Lanka’s Objections of the construction of  a so-called Tamil Genocide Monument at theChinguacousy Park in Brampton, Ontario,”

So now puny Sri Lanka has become the Whipping boy of Big Canada.  Ha! We asked for it, for our sheer Canadian arrogance and stupidity.  For Prime Minister’s Justine Trudeu’s Liberal Government  letting the  Mayor of Brampton, the pretend Saint Patrick Brown of Barrie,  get up on his High-horse and decide to recognize the Tamil deaths in a separatist War who were spoiling for a fight for donkey’s years, with Kalashnikov’s, Hand grenades, Claymore mines, and live bullets  And having difficulty to accept the Kindergarten Fact that if you live by the Gun, you die by the Gun, and ‘there is no if’s and but’s not even to find sympathy for crying Tamil-Men-Baby tears having had their butts whipped by the Sri Lankan soldiers on 19 May 2009.

You know HC, what is insane and despicable on the part of  the Liberal Government which has got my goat, is to let  that  pretend Saintly Clown Brown in Bramptonto discard the respect of the young lives of our own Indigenous children whose bodies were found in 1,300 unmarked graves, and 4,120 students known to have died in acts of Genocide at Residential Schools in the West, to erect a Memorial  monument for them, before he decided to erect a monument for the separatist Tamils who died fighting  wanting their separate mono-ethnic, racist Tamil State, Eelam, 13,720 km away.. This Saintly Clown is nuts and a Conservative.

Damn it!  It was in a historic move, the Canadian House of Commons unanimously recognized the Indian Residential School System as Genocide, on October 27, 2022 . In other words Canada is deemed to be a country who were Masters of Genocide,,   Which by right, we have no business to point our fingers, as we do at Sri Lanka, saying “We are Holier than Thou!”

Goodness, gracious.  What poppycock!    It’s time that Political-Canada smarten up without throwing  Canadian-codswallop at Sri Lanka,  and  trying to feed them rotting dead capelin found on the shores of Middle Cove in Newfoundland, by frying them curled in the middle of a Tamil   parippu-lentil wades. Sweet Mother of Jesus, these Canadian Liberals need help quite badly to understand the words “Truth” and”Honesty” Please help them.

If this pretend Saint Patrick Brown of Barrie is letting his bleeding heart  to act, I wonder whose communal deaths will he recognize next to memorialize with a  Monument in his Brampton Memorial Heavenly Garden.

Are these communities given numbers of priorities – like the 33 Sinhalese Novice monkswho were massacred at Arantalawa who were on a pilgrimage, by the Tamil terrorists on 2 Jun 1987,  13,720 km away; or the  147 Muslims who were  gunned down by Tamil Tiger terrorists when over 300 men and boys  were at Isha prayer. in the Meer Jummah Mosque at Kattankudy on 3 August 1990, in the east of Sri Lanka;  or will it be Newfoundland’s Native  Indian Beothucks  who were wiped out  2,674 km miles away  by the white-man. The last of the Beothuks was Shanawdithit who died on 6th June, 1829.   If the majority lying Tamils deserve a monument so do the Beothucks …  Shanawdithit  the last who died, said::”..
We tore our cassock
to reveal our Boghmoots (Breasts), to prove
we were women begging for your mercy,
but you had no compassion but heresy,
shooting and cutting our throats
killing the nits from lice,
and I still want to be understood
and be alive for I am Shanawdithit…”.

(from CANADIAN STORIES Vol 23, No.131, 2020 ,by Asoka Weerasinghe)

Your Excellency, I pray that this Sri Lankan- Canadian won’t be dragged along by the Tamil vote hungry Liberal Government with its arrogant, obnoxious, stupidity, and  kill  my will to let, truth, honesty and decency seep into my skull, for me to live in Canada in harmony in a  multi-cultural society and not promote the Canadian version of  Re-Con-Silly- a-shun  with the Tamils that Canada aided and abetted  helping them to become terrorists to fight the Sri Lankan Government to claim their mono-ethnic, separate Tamil state, Eelam, dissecting  the beautiful little island, my Motherland,  Sri Lanka , ino two,  that I am still romancing with.   Amen!

Sincerely

Asoka Weerasinghe (Mr.)

The other wrongfully imprisoned Julian Assanges that we do not fight for.

August 17th, 2024

Senaka Weeraratna

The case of Julian Assange who was imprisoned for 18 years and raised global protests, leading to his release only a few months ago is a classic example of the double standard employed by human beings.

French Buddhist Monk Mathieu Riccardo used the expression ‘ Cognitive dissonance ’. You split your mind,’ to describe this morally indefensible stand of humans.

We are worried about the long term imprisonment of Julian Assange (for 18 years) and its effects on his health, but least worried about the fate of the  equivalents of millions of Julian Assange of the Animal World that humans have imprisoned  in jail houses called Zoos, with hardly a protest or call for their release. Totally innocent of any wrong doing they spend a lifetime in small enclosures with hardly any room to move, having been plucked from their natural surroundings.

We do not see any injustice in our actions concerning lifetime imprisonment of animals in Zoos but in contrast do everything possible to achieve freedom for humans like Julian Assange.

Though we are separated by differences on ground of different species we are all united by a common sentience. We all suffer.

Our actions and double standards are ethically incoherent. As lawyers our legal training and more importantly the extension of justice to weaker sentient beings is brought upon to stand on its head.

The way we treat animals not only by commission but also by omission ( failing to release them from man made prisons) is an innate test of our true commitment to Justice, the real purpose of our legal education and our own moral progress.
