I just read a ColomboPage news item of Thursday, June 6, 2013 which was headlined ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” Canada shuns Sri Lanka summit over human rights concerns.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ It continued to say ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-Frances Harrison, author and former BBC correspondent in Sri Lanka, Hugh Segal, the Canadian governmentƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s envoy to the Commonwealth and Lal Wickrematunge from the Sunday Leader newspaper gave their views about the meeting.
To be honest I have not read your views, but I can imagine the gist of it from the headline ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” Canada shuns Sri Lanka summit over human rights concerns.
My response as a cautionary word for the Sri LankanƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s back in that beautiful island was ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-Just forget this Canadian Senator Hugh Segal.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ I donƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t think he is capable of deciphering what are ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-good human rightsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ and what are ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-bad human rightsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚, as he is one of the Canadian Conservatives who after you all managed to kick the butts of the worldƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s most ruthless Tamil Tiger terrorists and wiped them out militarily on 19 May 2009, have still been unableƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ to acknowledge and accept, your classic textƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ book example of the most profound human rights act.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ That your Sri Lanka was involved in liberating 295,873 TamilƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ hostages, the biggest liberation of political hostages in modern history. The TNA fondly ASSUMES that the GOSL has to hold the Provincial Council Elections because of the UPCOMING CHOGM and UN Human Rights Council meetings.

Sri Lanka Tamil party sees no use of holding Northern PC poll after reducing powers to provinces

June 09, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s major Tamil party, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) says it would be useless to hold elections to the Northern Provincial Council after amending the 13th Amendment and reducing powers vested with the provinces.
TNA parliamentarian Suresh Premachandran says the government however is compelled to hold the Northern Provincial Council elections.
“The current President and the government are going against this (implementing the 13th Amendment and going beyond),” he said.
“We want to go beyond the 13th Amendment. Provincial Councils need more powers on land, police and taxation. There are also issues in relation to the Governor. It is important to go beyond the current system. Only then can people in each province look after themselves. We are not satisfied with the current system and we must go beyond,” he added.
According to Premachandran, he does not have faith in the government to hold the Northern Provincial Council election, but understands that the government is compelled to hold the election because of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) and the resolution adopted at the UN Human Rights Council.
“The government has to therefore show the world that it is democratic and holds elections. The government has to face accountability issues before the international community and there is a lot of pressure, so they would have to hold elections in the North. It is not that the government wants to hold elections, but it is compelled to do so,” he has said.

For the TNA members who rely on south & other tax payers who pay their salaries, perks & all benefits…ITS TIME YOU people realize that you are a minority. Amounts to about 4% of the total population of Sri Lanka, as General FONSEKA, said after defeating LTTE, you Tamils, need to adjust & try to live with the majority race peacefully, IF NOT FIND INDIA or Europe, or USA to live as most of you people do anyway.

Sometimes it becomes necessary to place the interest of the nation over the policies of other nations. If Canada continues to maintain that Sri Lanka is a nation that continues to violate human rights then the presence of the Canadian Embassy is not needed since it is counter productive to the national interest of Sri Lanka. Maybe it is time to invite the Canadian Ambassador to leave Sri Lanka and close the Canadian Embassy. To make the point to Canada give the building that housed the Canadian embassy to the Buddhist Sanga or to China. In the same breath close the Sri Lankan Embassy in Canada. That would immediately remove the power Canada has over Sri Lanka and do the same to the US and Indian Embassies if they continue down the path of classifying Sri Lanka in this humiliating way with little or no proof. India above all has the most to lose if her presence in Colombo is removed and it could induce New Delhi to take a new point of view of Sri Lanka
