We have to always remember the debt we owe to the men and women who defend us. They must be remembered without ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ petty opportunisms and also there is a noble duty of enforcing the victories which gained by them with continue dedication. In such context ; the memory of ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ our loved officer ,late DIG Upul senavirathna still revives within our hearts.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Mr Upul senaviratna was born in 1962 and he was a brilliant old boyƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  of the Dhramaraja college at Kandy . He has Joined to SL Police department as a sub inspector on 26^th April 1982. His first training was at the Palatota (in Kalutara) police training school. He joined the STF in 1984 during the first intake at newly formed this police commando unit and subsequently have undergone ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ special trainings in Israel , USA and in India as well.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ He was promoted to police inspector in 1985, and with following promotions of CI in 1992, to ASP in 1995 and to SP in 2000 and then SSP to 2006 and he was posthumously promoted as DIG in August 2006.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ He also served from 1989 to 1990, as the STF area commander in Vauvnia division and from the 15^th December 2004 till 14 th june 2005 he was the director of operations in the Eastern province. As a commando instructor, he also initiated Parachute and Long range Recon trainings to the Special Task Force . This technical upgrading has brought the STF, among the best ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-multi operativeƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ special units available to the date.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ He was awarded by the Janaraja Padakkama, Janadipath Dorapath padakkama,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Deerga seva padakkama, SL Police vishista seva padakkama, 125 Sangawathsera padakkama, Poorna Bumi Padakkama, Desha Putra Padakkama, Swarna Bumi Padakkama and by Prathamadara Padakkama.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Mr Senavirathna was married at 28th May 1990 and was a father of two children.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ This brave officer made his ultimate sacrifice in 07.08.2006 as his vehicle has been targeted by a ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Claymore mine at Digana area. At the time of death he was the director of ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ police commando training school at Katukurunda. Many of his companions still remember his charming and leading qualities which illuminatedƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  one of best special units of our modern epoch, the formidable SPECIAL TASK FORCE . And his humanitarian activities during the Post Tsunami days and the his ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ civil service to the Eastern province people also must be remembered.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Again in this moment, commemorating his third death anniversary ; we pass our deepest sympathies to his loved wife Mrs Sudharma Puncikumari Senavirathna, daughter Isurika and to son Bhimsara senavirathna.
