The Rise, The Fall & Re-Emergence of Sarath Fonseka
Posted on May 23rd, 2012

Prof. Hudson McLean

This is history repeating itself, now in Sri Lanka.

The story is not new. Similar events have occurred in every Continent in these two centuries.

Will Sarath Fonseka become the Pervez Musharaff of Sri Lanka?

Oh! Fonzy cannot be compared with other political leaders who did spend sometime eating “cold rice”!

If the ex-General desires a clean start, he should clarify all the claims against him at personal level, as well as his skeletons in his political cupboards. However Musharaff, for all intensive purposes, kept his uniform clean, unlike Fonzy.

Moreover, Sarath Fonseka should clean-up his Act, starting from his own family.

Get the absconding son-in-law to face justice. Or is he waiting to become the President so that he can grant a Presidential pardon to his son-in-law?

If, during his tenure as the Commander of the Sri Lankan Army, Fonzy misused his Authority & Trust, used his son-in-law, as the “bag-man” to collect Sales Commissions, what might he get up to if & when he becomes the Commander-in-Chief.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa is No Fool.

Got the Monkey Fonzy out of jail,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  but on-a-string, to appease Clinton, but shall keep him in check.

Checks & Balances

However, the Re-Emergence of citizen Sarath Fonseka, might create enough “storms” in “many tea-cups” which might keep the Rajapaksa Clan in-Check, since the corruption, according to various sources, has simply escalated in every Ministry within the government. And Rajapaksa as Nero is playing is “organ” with his erstwhile Foreign Secretary is displaying the subservience to the Western leaders.

One thing Fonzy can do is to yell like hell when he thinks that his ex-boss and the R-clan are doing the double-dip!ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Neither Ranil nor Sajith has the fire-power to stand-up and be counted!

UNP Leadership – Sajith’s Appeal for Help

The limping Ranil was a “God-send” to President Rajapaksa.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  For all intensive purposes, the Sri Lanka democracy simply staggered-on, with a powerful government and a lame-duck Opposition. The hapless Ranil Wickramasinghe provided a cosmetic opposition with a few potential leaders staggering around without a back-bone.

Now the Leader-in-Waiting, Sajith Premadasa announces that Sarath Fonseka might be that “White-Knight” to save the “virgin-bride” from the moustachioed Mahinda, Pepsodent-smile, galavanting in his dyed-wig & moustache.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  This should have been an opportunity to demonstrate his Leadership, by acting more like a budding-Statesman, not like a a shoe-polisher of citizen Fonzy.

In a way, this is good news for Sajith. He might be able to “have his cake and eat it” meaning, put a shine-on Fonzy, but due the Rajapaksa-string attached to the prison-release, both can have a long engagement to be engaged, without thinking of getting married.

Incidentally, why has Dr. Telli gone out of Vision?

The Sri Lanka saga could be another Shakespearean play!

  1. AnuD Says:

As SF knows how the Sri Lankan Justice system works he should send his relatives also through the same system

    Why don’t they clean this kind of things first. These things are a daily occurrence;

  2. NeelaMahaYoda Says:

Certainly President Mahinda Rajapaksa is No Fool. But Gonseka is a bloody fool. Gonseka thinks that if Sri Lanka agrees to war crime investigation we can get a fair justice delivered to us by Americans and Europeans system. Gonseka hasn’t got enough grey matter in his head to understand the fact that West is really unhappy about what has happened to their agent Probaharan.

  3. Sunil Mahattaya Says:

Like in the Old Billy Bunter novel expresasion “the Fonzyfulness is terrific!”
The analysis of relativities pertaining to the Rajapaksa’s, Mme Clinton, the political ( calatipol really!) arena of the UNP and the probabilities facing Fonseka Clan is even more terrific and brilliantly satirical.
However if the head honcho’s gand takes time to read and evaluate what the Prof is hinting at it won’t be long before heads might start to roll for the extent to which the members of the clan are implicated here and the resurgence if the white van brigade too could be a distinct possibility.Only this time they could be painted blue! He he! Trivia question~ is is constitutionally possible to revoke the release order and freedom directive and for his own safety and well being drag the poor chap…….. I mean general, back into the hoosegow ?
Great reading Prof! Do give us some more!

  4. David Appuhami Says:

    Well said Prof.
This is the important reason why I can’t support Fonzy

“If, during his tenure as the Commander of the Sri Lankan Army, Fonzy misused his Authority & Trust, used his son-in-law, as the “bag-man” to collect Sales Commissions, what might he get up to if & when he becomes the Commander-in-Chief”.

  5. AnuD Says:

During the war there was a scandle which involved a navy admiral, I suppose. Since then, MOD established a company took over the arms imports.

Do you think, if there is a little hint about SF engaging in those things would the govt stay silent ? He went against not any other person. It is the president and his brother who was the defence secretary.

If SF engaged in those. after so many investigations why did they took him to court martials just for buying some batteries andnight goggoles without the proper Tender procedure. Besides, that, since then , they are prosecuting him other crappy cases such as white flag case, getting the help from the deserters.

For me all these articles, are feeding things into peoples mind.

Why the govt is so scared to him, even 91% approval rating ?

  6. AnuD Says:

Is it just a coincidence that there is another article in Lankaweb suggesting that SF corporated with his son-in-law in collecting these commissions Or everybody was instructed at the same time to write articles emphasizing certain imagination ?

  7. Lorenzo Says:

    Always love reading the Prof.

I agree in most part. Few disagreements.

SF is useful. You will see how!

Instead of blaming SF, we should give him enough rope to play the “tie wearing game” or the “tortoise on a stick” game. :))

  8. dhane Says:

SF is now “in open Prison” having many enemies. Ex-Army, Personal now more political. Non of the Former veteran Political supporters for the “Common Presidential Candidate” will be happy he is over taking them with Karu & Sujith group. Considering all these points he is again “in Prison”

  9. aravinda Says:

Lets wait for formation of Mr.Fonseka’s much heralded Democratic Party. His wife will be the Deputy Leader in this Husband & Wife party. This man should retire and enjoy his his days with family, without becoming a burden to Sri Lanka.

  10. Dilrook Says:

There is an additional challenge for Sri Lanka.

The New Cold War officially started yesterday. NATO declared its missile defence shield is operational last Sunday. In response Russia test fired a Topol-M Intercontinental Balistic Missile (the most destructive weapon known to man) in its north-western (Europe) front. This has escalated the already tensed US-Russian relations.

A new arms race is on.

Sri Lankan policymakers should take into account the new world order that is now official. Pandering into too many US or Russian interests will lead to punishment by the other camp, their proxies and agents. It is not 50%-50% as it differs by region and country. We have to have our mix right.

Foreign Minister’s current tour of Russia is a good move.

  11. Dilrook Says:

As the new cold war intensifies, paid agents and destabilisation agents of both US and Russian camps will try to turn this country into their playground once again.

It must be avoided by careful moves. Foreign policy (including foreign aligned economic policy) disasters from 1948 – 1989 should be avoided.

  12. aloy Says:

    Dilrook,
The new world order has not arrived yet. It will arrive after an Iran war (during which the the energy starved west will take over middle east) or after US will become a none white country. The none white birth rate in US has overtaken that of whites now, as a result the US policy makers will be none whites in the future, perhaps in another 30-40 years time. The world oil reserves will also be finished by that time, requiring new modes of transport. Middle east will become irrelevant. I think our leaders should prepare the country for that scenario.
Do we have any capable leaders?. Military strategists and businessmen will not do.

  13. Sri Rohana Says:

Professor McLean brought a great topic. That is true Mr Fonseka has to clean up his acts.
I like to know how come S.F got American Green Card while he was working as an Army Commander. On what criteria he got GC without going to America. I guess he is the only Army Commander in this world got American Green Card while serving in the Army. U.S.A grants special category Green Cards only to their spy’s and obedient agents? If so is SF an American spy or agent? Is that the reason SF went to state department before contest as a presidential candidate? Is that the reason U.N.P, TNA, JVP and every other pro American CIA agents supported him shoulder to shoulder in election platform.
In addition what is SF’s latest opinion on “white flag’’ story? Is he still going to defend his hearsay story as a true?
SF has to tell the truth of his journalist who told “white flag” story to him
    1. What is the name of the journalist
    2. Where is he now
    3. Is he a refugee in another country
    4. In which media company he is/was belong to
    5. How come said journalist heard Mr G.R and General Shavendra de Silva’s conversation
    6. Had his journalist worked in the Ministry of Defence or 56th Regiment Head Quarters?

  14. Dham Says:

    Sir rohana,
“I like to know how come S.F got American Green Card while he was working as an Army Commander. ”
Not only he but alos Gota went there before coming back to SL after MR win. He did not get it while he was Army comm but before that.
Before coming he arrnaged to steal money by asking someone to sett up a ” zero dollar” company in Australia ( just one month before MR won, strangely). Then his son in law in bided for various contract to supply items to Army thorugh this company.
Lorenzo says these are minot items like goggles. True, but number is very large so is the profit and the steal.
He may have stolen more stuff which were never found.

  15. Sri Rohana Says:

    Dear Dham
Thanks for the query. Our topic is not G.R but of S.F anyway G.R got his American residency after he retired or resigned from Army in 1990’s. Since then he was in U.S.A and entitled for American Citizenship or Permanent Residency. But our S.F’s scenario is different. He was offered Green Card while he was in the Army if I am correct? This is a peculiar situation. There is no transparency or transparent procedure. Can Americans say under what legal category he got a Green Card.

  16. Dham Says:

    Sri ROhana,
Thanks for info ( if you know it 100%). If that is ture , he is THE MASTER BETRAYOR.

  17. AnuD Says:

Patriotism and “Americans – enawo” are the two terms of the game.

Everything is secondary to those two. People are unable to think critically.

Govt says, they are doing everything for Sri Lanka. but, have they done except establishing their positions ?

  18. Melbourne Patriot Says:

Fonseka talks about getting rid of corruption, then he should not get involved in such big time corruptors like Tiran Alles, Karu Jayasuriya, Ranil Wickramasinghe and Chandrika Kumaratunga. In relation to good governnance, he should not associate with people like Sarath Silva. In relation to patriotism he cannot sleep with such traitors of the country like Vikramabahu karuanarathne, mano ganeshan and rauf hakeem. In relation to creating decency, he should not assoicate with thugs like Arjuna Ranatunga. The only option available is for him is to reach the massess directly. JVP is the only party he can comfortably sleep with, but still with reservations

  19. Dham Says:

    AnuD,
There is nothing good in Gov. I agree.
But GonPonseka is worse. he will be next Idi Ameen. No doubt.
    Are you his brother ?
