The United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) has decided to give nominations to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to contest at the upcoming General Election on August 17 under the UPFA ticket.

A statement issued by the UPFA General Secretary Susil Premajayantha states that as discussed at the UPFA party leaders’ meeting held last evening (02), a decision has been taken to give nominations to the former President to contest the 2015 General Election from the UPFA.

The UPFA party leaders’ meeting was chaired by President Maithripala Sirisena, who is the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and leader of the UPFA.

Accordingly, the nominations of the United People’s Freedom Alliance would be prepared within the next couple of days, the statement said.

It further states that after the party’s nominations are compiled the Elections Operations Committee of the UPFA will convene with the participation of other political parties in the alliance.

On Wednesday (June 01), Rajapaksa announced that he intends to re-enter politics and stand in parliamentary elections next month.

Mr Rajapaksa lost the presidential elections to party rival Maithripala Sirisena in January.

Speaking in front of a large crowd of supporters in his home district, Mr Rajapaksa said he could not reject their clamour for him to stand.

But it was not clear which party the former president would represent.

Mr Sirisena, the new leader of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) which Mr Rajapaksa led for 10 years prior to his downfall, has previously ruled out appointing him as candidate.

Following the UPFA party leaders’ meeting yesterday, Premajayantha had stated that President Sirisena had assured that he would discuss the matter with his parliamentary group and announce his decision today.

In his speech on Wednesday in his home town of Medamulana, Mr Rajapaksa said that he and his supporters will contest and look to form the next government”.

Mr Rajapaksa did not say if he was aiming to become prime minister, instead choosing to invite all political parties to join hands” with him for the 17 August vote.

Last week, President Sirisena dissolved the parliament, paving the way for fresh parliamentary elections in mid-August, eight months ahead of the schedule.

Great! One battle is over, but there may be more. Now, MR must take extreme precautions against threats to his life from black tigers recently released by the Yahapalana govt.

It is very important to defeat this treacherous UNP govt let by Thoppigala Ranil. There are more reasons to do that but one of the most important ones is to save our war heroes from going to the guillotine. Think how hard Ranil tried to catch Gota? First, Rakna Lanka Security Company, then the floating armoury in Galle, construction of Defence head-quarters in Pelawatte and then the decade old Mig deal. Since he is very intelligent and took decisive and strategic steps to get a court order preventing him from the arrest, Ranil couldn’t do it this time. However, if he becomes the first executive PM in this country after the next general election, he will definitely do it. Remember how Ranil tried to go to Commonwealth to get the court order reversed in order to punish Gota merely because he defeated Velu. Not only Gota, Ranil tried his best to complicate Karannagoda for an old case of disappearing some Tamil students while in the custody of Navy.

So, if you want to see the end of war heroes, vote for the UNP or if as a grateful nation want to protect them, cast your vote wisely and make MR the next executive PM in this country.

Our best wishes to Mahinda Rajapakse and all his supporters ! Welcome back to make the country flourish again, in the right way, with Security & Safety, Peace & Prosperity for all. No more false accusations and vindictive backbiting when MR comes in.
And as Indrajjith suggests, do watch out for more traps ….

  3. Cerberus Says:

Based on the past record of Marusira he is very capable of saying he never agreed to give nomination to President Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister even if he wins the election for the UPFA. If the hard core tigers have been released by Ranil it will be ensure that they finish off the Rajapaksas. Who gave him permission to release those fellows?

  7. Metteyya_Brahmana Says:

I am not exactly clear on UPFA rules, but if contesting from a party within the alliance does not permit one to field a candidate from a district where another candidate from a different party within the alliance is contesting, then Mahinda should reject Maithripala’s offer to contest from the UPFA. It is imperative that Mahinda retains the ability to challenge the 30 disloyal SLFP MPs by fielding his own pro-Mahinda candidates in each of these MPs districts, as most of these MPs are in districts Mahinda carried in January. Otherwise, he is going to have a problem forming a government after the August election even if he garners the most votes for PM. Ranil is counting on these same 30 disloyal SLFP MPs who are currently part of his government to continue with his minority-rule after the election, so Mahinda needs a rock solid plan to either re-gain the loyalty of these 30 MPs or replace them in the August election with MPs who are loyal to him.

NMY, Lanka C News report is correct! I only wanted to show Marusira’s duplicity.

This is what happened: MS was in firm determination not to give nominations to MR but after seeing the massive crowd gathered at Medha Mulana he copuldn’t go against the peoples choice. So, he finally agreed to it as he has no other choice in this. But when Mr. Sopitha extremely objected to it, MS said he didn’t know about it just to please the now anti-Sinhala, pro-UNP monk.

Sri Lanka President claims ignorance over Mahinda nomination
    July 4, 2015, 6:37 pm

    By Our Political Correspondent

ECONOMYNEXT: President Maithripala Sirisena, who is facing intense criticism over accommodating his nemesis Mahinda Rajapaksa in the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA), appears to have made a second U-turn in as many days.

President Sirisena reportedly agreed to name former strongman Rajapaksa as a UPFA candidate to face the August 17 parliamentary election, but even 24 hours after the initial announcement, he himself remained silent.

However, Buddhist monk Maduluwawe Sobitha, a key figure responsible for Sirisena’s victory at January 8 vote, told reporters that he spoke with the president who claimed he was unaware of Rajapaksa getting a UPFA ticket.

“He says “mama danne na” ( I don’t know),” the monk told reporters. “Let’s wait for him to make a statement.”
