President Maithripala Sirisena has decided to retain the hitherto imposed import tax of 5 per cent on imported electric vehicles, rejecting the 50 per cent tax proposed in Budget 2016.

This decision was taken at yesterday’s Cabinet meeting which was reportedly skipped by Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake. A number of UNP Ministers, including Malik Samarawickrama and Sagala Rathnayake, however agreed with the President’s suggestion conceding that increasing the tax on electric vehicles was a mistake.

President Sirisena has said that although he is the Minister of Environment, he was not consulted when the decision to increase the tax was taken.
The government has decided not to subject vehicles imported on Letters of Credit opened prior to the presentation of Budget 2016, to new taxes proposed in the budget.
This decision was taken after President Sirisena tabled a proposal at yesterday’s Cabinet meeting to this effect. Minister of Higher Education, Lakshman Kirielle said that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had also mooted the same idea.

The secret deals carried out by the so-called ‘united opposition’, which is really the Mahinda faction of the SLFP, would be exposed soon says Minister Mahinda Amaraweera.

Speaking at a media conference held by the SLFP today (22nd) Minister Amaraweera said certain individuals of the faction who shout to topple the government during day time meet UNP leaders secretly at night for various secret deals. He said Mahinda Rajapaksa faction, carrying out a contract from the UNP, aims to sabotage the programme planned by the President.

Media had reported that during the budget debate former President Mahinda Rajapaksa secretly met the Prime Minister in Parliament. Also, despite the faction Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa represents voted against the budget, he kept away from voting which was a highly talked about topic in political circles.

Let us see which party will oppose the allowances increase of Rs 20,000 per sitting in the Parliament. We should cosider only that party as Patriots and ALL others as Leech.

    Merry Christmas everyone.

Enjoy without intoxicating alcohol and blood dried flesh.

Baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph had none of those!! He was born in a stable with cows, sheep, etc. Unthinkable of eating them for Christmas. King Herod after a few drinks ordered to kill all boys under 3 months immediately. Don’t be like him. Think of poor kids who barely survive. A meal for them will make YOUR Christmas.
