Vajiragnana Warnakulasuriya

With thousand plus apologies to those who burn the midnight oil to find solutions and suggest possibilities to ailing issues in Sri Lanka, I being inept in that area wish to write on a trivial issue for Sri Lanka knowing that Myna is a common bird found all over the country but ignorant to the fact it’s influence on other bird species!

Now that most of the burning issues of the day have been solved in Sri Lanka since Yahapalanaya was dawned, I would like to draw your attention to a very dangerous menace SL had for a very, very long time purely due to ignorance (popular definition of the inhabitants)!

Australia being a rich country, again some ignorant academics spends their leisure studying Environment and Nature and now they have stumbled across a disastrous change to come in local bird populations by Indian Myna. This extremely aggressive bird chases out native birds causing extinction of very attractive birds and marsupials according to extensive studies and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) declared the bird among ‘100 of the World’s Most Invasive species’.

This article deals with the subject and highlighting the gravity of the situation suggesting a culling of this Invasive species as a remedy! SL being a Buddhist country, birds however much destructive, this cannot be encouraged directly but if this issue is presented to the NGO group they may introduce a scheme similar to chicken farming which is now very popular in every home! Still a Buddhist country and Buddhist Monks live, mind you this is an insignificant issue to what people back there are subjected to feel daily or infrequently minus the White van era. Initially this was an utter failure when the Church had a go at it. This is akin to There’s more than one way to skin a Myna”

This Myna menace is very easier than the Elephant menace, this is in true sense of the word is a MINOR task, This way I can only draw your attention to an existing disaster that may have caused the extinction of unknown amount of enchanting bird species, my appeal now is for any one of you to educate your Environment and Nature Ministry to do the needful!

Strange that no Sri Lanka Myna understodd this so far.

    Probably Kithsiri may understand.
Indian Myna is a problem we Sri Lankans are facing since the year of the donkey. 2009 culling did not help becuase after culling we supplied nests for existing mynas.

Yes, Indian Mynas and Indian colonial parasites are a menace their according to my Indian Myna mate there.

A friend of his lives in an old house with broken ceilings and an old kitchen with a chimney.

A Myna pair bred in a nest built in the outside ceiling. After few years fed up with Myna nuisance he pulled the nest off.

The Myna pair built their nest in the chimney of the kitchen and all Myna shit and other rubbish falls in to the cooking pots and pans.

And the Indians are better and has taken his job over for half the pay.
