Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday that the government was planning to abolish the Executive Presidency at the end  of President Maithripala Sirisena’s current term.

Asked by a Sri Lankan domiciled in New Zealand during  a reception hosted for him at the  Auckland City Council, if he would contest the next Presidential election, Wickremesinghe replied ” We are working on scrapping the Executive Presidency.”

The prime minister said that it had still not been decided  as to which system would replace the Executive Presidency.” Whether its powers would be fully transferred to Parliament or a combination of the national legislature, Senate and Provincial Councils is being discussed.”
