Ranil Wickramasinghe has no right to continue as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, he should resign from his Office immediately.

Ranil Wickramasinghe should resign as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. It is not only because of the COPE report, and his deceitful action of trying to cover up a thief, but also for various irregularities of his very appointment as the Prime Minister and his failure to live up to the standard of a Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.
Prime Ministers in democratic countries have resigned for less damaging reasons. David Cameron of UK resigned because the people decided the country should withdraw from the EU. In the case of Ranil Wickramasinghe the Office was offered to him as a gift of gratitude, by a man-Maithripala Sirisena who would have never been appointed by the people as a President of Sri Lanka under normal circumstances. He was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka in January,2015 unconstitutionally, when there was already an elected Prime Minister and a Government.
The people had rejected him as a political leader capable of leading the country in 29 elections. When he was the Prime Minister in 2004 he signed the most traitorous, and a politically disastrous Cease Fire Agreement with the terrorist leader Prabhakara without consulting either the President or the Parliament of Sri Lanka. That agreement resulted, in 100 nay thousands of lives. It was signed at the demand of a Norwegian of a doubtful honesty, as Ranil Wickramasinha is an inveterate champion, and a poor imitator of white man’s culture. He will stop at nothing to receive the applause of the West.
What he seeks in politics is to gain personal social prestige, and the accompanying priviledge of moving with his western and Indian political heroes. Ranil Wickramasinghe is a stranger to Sri Lanka’s uniqueness which is its Buddhist culture. Hence it is nothing for him to sacrifice all that is Sinhala to reconcile with the Tamils and the Muslims which will win him the accolade of the West as another just and a fair democratic leader among Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore , or South African Nelson Mandela.
Ranil Wickramasinghe is not only a Lee Kuan Yew fan, but also a great lover of Singapore. He takes Singapore as the model to develop Sri Lanka. He recommends to his friends, cabinet Ministers, and even Monks who help him in his political ambition hospitals in Singapore to be taken care of their health. One such monk even died under mysterious circumstances.
Ranil Wickramasinghe’s best friend Arjun Mahendran is from Singapore . He made him the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.
Already the political leaders or their representative from USA, Europe and other countries in the West are in and out of Sri Lanka as it is their second home. They come to teach Sri Lanka about democracy, how to live with the minorities and make Sri Lanka a secular country not to affect the spiritual sensibility of the minorities, and to tell Sri Lanka Government to write a new Constitution.
Ranil Wickramasinghe the Prime Minister detests all those who represent Sinhala Culture beginning from the former President Mahinda Rajapakse. He would like to imprison him and all who follows him to put an end to Sri Lanka’s claim of uniqueness because of its Buddhist Culture. The nominally Sinhala Buddhist English educated Colombians- those from schools like the Royal, Trinity, follow Ranil Wickramasinghe calling him a clean man”. In reality he is the most unclean clean man”.
The English educated Colombians have little in common with the former President Mahinda Rajapakse. There are those who comment to say they have first hand information to dislike the former President. But despite the abusers, those harbouring personal grudges having failed to have obtained any personal benefits, Mahinda Rajapakse remains a true Sinhala Buddhist, who belongs to the core (souche) of Sinhala Buddhist culture –the ordinary mass of people. He has contribute to his mother land no Prime Minister or President before or after him was able to contribute.
Ruling a country is difficult more so when the ruler loves the country and its culture and wants to protect it and develop Sri Lanka in keeping it within its Cultural singularity, facing the challenges coming from the enemies of that culture, and those who know nothing of it but desire Sri Lanka go the way the rich and powerful would like it to go.
But Ranil Wickramasinghe the Prime Minister with his loyalty to the West has no compunction to take Sri Lanka the way the west wants it to be taken, outside its cultural orbit to please the minorities, to remove military camps from the north, take the Army personal before an international court for war crimes committed during the elimination of terrorism. He wants to sign trade agreements with India which will subjugate Sri Lanka’s independence and sovereignty to India.
Since Ranil Wickramasinghe became the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, he has not done much to develop the country and secure the hard earned peace after thirty years of war, nor has he taken viable steps to ameliorate the living conditions of the ordinary people of Sri Lanka. There is no doubt that the people were better off under the government of President Mahinda Rajapakse
It is only the English speaking middle class Colombians who speak of a difference in democracy, media freedom, and order and respect to law since the coming into power of the Yahapalanaya Government. But the greater majority of the common people outside Colombo wants a return of the former President Mahinda Rajapakse.
Ranil Wickramasinghe has organised his own secret police the FCID, and the judges are ready to accede to the findings of the Prime Minister’s FCID, Commission of Bribery and Corruption to please the Yahapalanaya Government. Ranil Wickramasinghe as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka has failed to earn the confidence of the people, who have begun to speak openly of his inability to continue as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.
The worst ever Bond Scam since Sri Lanka became independent came under Ranil Wickramasinghe’s Premiership. It is the worst fraud committed against the people of Sri Lanka. The COPE investigated into the Bond Scam and presented its findings to the Parliament. It has found the Prime Minister’s best friend, the Governor of the Central Bank Arjun Mahendran has played the central role in the Bond Scam making him accountable for the massive loss of over Rs.11 billion in the sale of Treasury Bonds.
The COPE has not named the Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe as directly involved in the theft, though it has been said that Arjun Mahendran had declared that he acted under instruction from the Prime Minister. But even if the COPE report has not mentioned the Prime Minister’s involvement in the Bond Scam, his responsibility and his being a party in the fraud in the sale of Central Bank Treasury Bonds become evident in examining the matters leading to the Bond Scam.
These facts alone make him a party to the Bond Scam which is reason enough under democratic tradition for him to tender his resignation, before he is removed from the Office by the President.
If the President Maithripala Sirisena fails in his duty to request the Prime Minister to resign, he himself become directly responsible in the Central Bank Treasury Bond Scam.
This is a serious matter which can be treated lightly by referring to frauds committed by the Previous Government of the former President Mahinda Rajapakse. These are two separate Governments and each has to be responsible for each one’s wrongs without any reference to the other to make light of the present offence with regard to the Bond Scam.
Even if it is granted that there had been financial irregularities” during the former government of the President Mahinda Rajapakse, the Bond Fraud is far greater, and the worst is that the loss continues for 30 years.
What are the factors leading to the Central Bank Treasury Bond Scam, which make the Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe directly or indirectly responsible for the fraudulent means used in the sale of Treasury Bonds-the Treasury Bond Scam ?
The Treasury Bond Scam seems to have been pre-planned. At the Presidential election of 8 January,2015 Maithripala Sirisena was elected President. Immediately after his swearing in as the President on 8 January,2015, he swore in Ranil Wickramasighe as the Prime Minister.
Prime Minister took over the Central Bank under his Ministry of National Policies and Economic Affairs.
On the 15 January,2015 Mr.Arjuna Mahendran a citizen of Singapore was appointed as the Governor of the Central Bank. In February, 2015 treasury bonds worth one Million rupees was put on sale by the Central Bank.
Immediately after the fraud with regard to the sale of treasury bonds was reported, the Prime Minster appointed a committee of three lawyers to investigate into the fraud and report on the involvement of the Governor of the Central Bank.
The Committee reported that there was no direct involvement of the Governor of the Central Bank in the Bond Scam. In the meantime the term of office of the Governor of Central Bank was coming to an end.
The President wanted the Prime Minister to terminate the Service of Arjuna Mahendran from the Central Bank. The Prime Minister pointed out that Arjuna Mahendran was not found guilty in the Bond Scam by the Committee he appointed to incestigate the Bond Scam.
Nevertheless the President appointed Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy as the Governor of Central Bank.
For some reason the Prime Minister still refused to send away Arjuna Mahendran. Instead of sending before an instigation committee for the alleged irregularities, the Prime Minister took him away from the Banka and appointed Arjuna Mahendra as a Financial advisor to the Prime Minister in the Ministry under him.
The Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe had been sending his FCID to arrest and question the Family members including the former first lady- the wife of the former President Mahinda Rajapakse, Ministers of his Cabinet and every one connected to him and worked with him in his government.
Most of these persons had been arrested, some put in remand jail without allowing bail, for offences which are peanuts” compared to the Bond Scam in which the Prime Minister is directly involved when examining closely the matters leading to the COPE Report.
The questions that should be asked from the Prime Minister are:
Why did he take over the Central Bank under his Ministry, when traditionally it should be kept under the Minister of Finance ?
Why did he appoint Arjuna Mahendran as the Governor of the Central Bank knowing that he is a Citizen of Singapore ?
Why did he appoint three lawyers who are working for him at Sirikotha to a Committee to investigate the involvement of Arjuna Mahendran in the Bond Scam, knowing that they were not independent ?
Why did he not terminate the Services of Arjuna Mahinda when the President demanded him to do so ?
Why did he appoint Arjuna Mahendran as his Financial Advisor along side Paskaralingam, without sending him before a court of law for investigation as to his involvement in the Bond Scam ?
Why did the Prime Minister repeatedly defend Arjuna Mahendran knowing that he was in some way involved in the Bond Scam ?
Has he made inquiries as to how the Perpetual Treasuries had disposed of the gains from the Bond Scam ?
Has any part of the monies involved in the Bond Scam find its way into the coffers of UNP ?
The fact that the Central Bank came directly under his Ministry makes the Prime Minister directly responsible for the Bond Scam. The Prime Minster Ranil Wickramasinghe has completely lost the confidence of the people of Sri Lanka , therefore he has no moral right to continue as the Prime Miister of Sri Lanka. He should resign forthwith from his Office as Prime Minister.

Ranil Wickremasinghe should not exist by now. He should have been convicted and hanged in 1991 for Batalanda murders if we assume he commited those cold blooded murders and tortures.
Not only RW but there are other murderers who exist in the parliament, going by news media. As for fraud, 70% of current MP’s should be in jails in a civilised country ! Those who love the country neither kill it’s citizens for speaking out nor steal the wealth of the country.
Actually, at this instance , I agree that a proper investigation shall be conducted to punish all culprits. There could be many in the Central Bank ,Tresuary and other leading banks who are connected with this type of activity for a long long time. A new COPE investigation shall be conducted to investigate KABRAAL and previous CB thieves too !

Thanks Charles.
I think we have to Mr Modi the most powerful Emperor of India to sack him. They are the ones who put them there.
If we are to hang Ranil for Batalanda; we should hang all those who were and are in the JVP and associated groups and Indians who financed and directed them.

Our country has been taken on a ride by politicians with 30-40 years experience far too long. RW should step aside temporarily and give room for a quick impartial investigation. If not Prez should sack him and appoint new ministers to replace Patali, Rajitha, Dayasiri et al, the unpatriotic men who have lost the confidence of the people and are batting for RW.
To my mind Prez was given a place to sit among the top world leaders and also to shake hand with the Queen in her ungloved hand thinking he will act clean which was his promise to people of SL before Jan 8th 2015.

Patali is doing the same mistake Mahinda regime did. Neglecting rural areas and over investing in Colombo City. From a SLFP point of view, Mahinda’s investments in infrastructure after 2010 was a complete waste as they focused on minority dominated areas. He failed to achieve relevant economic growth, sufficient tax returns for the government to repay the loans and votes. UNP is doing the same mistake. Although these areas vote for the UNP, over investing in these areas doesn’t increase votes.

I agree with Dilrook, They really spent too much to develop north and east to the extent of neglecting the rural areas in the south. In south there are villages without proper roads, bridges, and even water. In a way North and East nneeded more development because of the terrorism, but it was a wastage interms of lack of gratitude of the Tamils and Muslims for all that MR Government did for their welfare. There is a Tamil woman MP or Minister who said that they were far more safe and happy under terrorirsm

Ranil & UNP planned CB Robbery very carefully as soon he was appointed PM. UNP Picked Arjun Mahendran not because of his qualifications & experience. Out of the 16 prime dealers of CB its only Mahendran has family own dealer his son-in law Perpetual Treasuries do the robbery. As the first step RW took over CB under him, appointed most suitable man to do the robbery. RW would have assured Mahendran not to fear for any action that he will cover-up. Few days before Bond Scam at CB had a secrete discussion RW, Ravi, Mahendran, Kabbier Hassim, Malik. Nobody knows what these UNP planned. But we can consider its the planning for the Bond Scam robbery and the profit of this robbery may be next election coffers of UNP. That would been the reason TOP UNP had a discussion before Bond Scam. But thanks to JO and COPE most of the facts had now come out. Mahendran had declared that he acted under instructions from the Prime Minister. What more facts need anybody to know the culprits. As usual now RW will put Mahendran in trouble and he will get away. Wait and see what RW will do If President not take quick action RW may drag him also into this soup.

@Charles
Such ungratefulness can only come from south Indians. Their insanity was on display in 2010 when they made up their mind to vote for Fonseka (the army commander under whose leadership LTTE was annihilated and who made many inflammatory remarks against Tamil interests) against Mahinda. It is a community driven by hate.
Mahinda should have followed the “bahujana hithaya bahujana sukhaya” concept. With limited funds, where could he have invested that would benefit most (and the national coffers). It is certainly not the north and the east. Jaffna was developed since 1996 and needed no more development by 2010 than Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, Kurunegala or Monaragala. Batticaloa didn’t suffer significant war damage by 2010 as it was always under government control except a very few less populated areas. Vanni needed development but only to an extent. Basil over invested in the north, east and Colombo City.
UNP seems to be doing the same mistake. However, the megapolis ministry seems to be a sham as the government has no money to construct even a culvert let alone a city. If they summon the Chinese ambassador over his correct remarks, that will be the end of Sri Lanka.

The RW (UNP) led Yahap is in power. The UNP leader RW came in through the back door after downing the country a number of times earlier. Pres MS said he appointed RW as Exec PM ‘because the west wants it so’.
Earlier, the UNP under JRJ accepted the 13-A because INDIA wanted it so – and the ILLEGAL & DIVISIVE 13-A is still with us.
The Yahap have done NOTHING for the South, so far, and Yahap folk are thriving !
In the North, whatever is done for Tamil folk, the Tamil leaders are busy undoing that, e.g. only about 23% of the money allocated by the MR govt for the North was used by the NPC.
Tamil leaders still keep the V’koddai Resoln (1976) – Eelam through Violence.
Tamil leaders encourage dissent & violence, and then go abroad and complain to the IC (west) that the GoSL (any GoSL) is creating Tamil genocide, discrimination, etc.
Tamil leaders quite forget that across the Palk Sts, just 12 miles away, in Tamil Nadu the CASTE SYSTEM is thriving.
The CASTE of Tamil folk is stated in their birth certificates. This is not so in Lanka – no caste on birth certs.
In Tamil Nadu, the Census is carried out on the CASTE BASE.
Yet, in spite of all their complaining, all Tamil leaders of Lanka & Tamil folk are dependent on the GoSL & the rest of Lanka for all their needs in Lanka !
Who governs the Tamils of Lanka ?
Who governs the Sinhala people of Lanka ?
Who gains from all the mayhem in Lanka ?
Muslims & some others are caught in between these events plus the events in the Middle East/Europe and the rest of the west.
What we all need is : CLEAN air, water & Food.
Free birth control for adults : far kinder than wars to reduce populations.
Recognition of common ground for all religions : God/Truth/Peace is WITHIN YOU. Meditation is the way to get in touch with your Peace Within.
Recall that all wars are fought for Peace.

Lanka is on its way to be ruined. All that we value are gradually taken away from us. The country is already divide amoung the Tamils , the Muslims and the western minded Colombians. The ordinary Sinhala Buddhists remain orphaned without a leadership , without direction. President Sirisena is a cancer that is eating into the remaining strongholds of Sinhala Buddhist Culture. He is a weakling dancing to the tune of Ranil, Chandrika, and even Mangala and Rajitha. If things do not change our Sinhala Buddhist civilization in Sri Lanka is doomed.
November 6th, 2016 at 2:30 pm
LOVE should be so blind not to see the REAL COLOMBIANS
1. Who are educated at St. Thomases College and play rugby
2. Who block public roads and enjoy Road Races in expensive cars, women and boose
3. Who buy most expensive land in Mt. lavinia in the name of non-Sinhala grand mother
4. Who amass massive wealth within very short time
Brave Sinhala Buddhist soldiers died to serve these REAL COLOMBIANS ? Our country could have been in ruins in no time if this hooligons were allowed to use their political power to rape the motherland.
One must be cowardly poor in values to blame others and do not see stupidnessan within.

Dear Charles,
Do not despair.
The Big Powers will realise soon that CLIMATE CHANGE is the major challenge on Planet Earth. Actually, they know this already as almost all scientists in every country have agreed on this point. Politics have got in the way, but ground realities will wake up everyone soon.
Everyone will have to come together and work together, or else it is ‘Sink together’.
Clean Air, Water & Food a must !
Responsible Govts a must !

Commenting for sake of commenting….there is a subject discussed…. do not make it an occasion to …condemn some to praise others. If you do not like the subject do not comment. Why sign like those who write foot notes and then vote…they could have very well stayed without signing. Why foot notes ?

All the politicians both local and international seem to be hell bent on pocket stuffing. At a time when the economy is in such dire straits, how can they allow import of luxury cars for the uneducated louts in Parliament and a very special car for the head honcho Ranil. To pay for all this the poorest of the poor to have to pay VAT.
The planet earth has now moved beyond the tipping point in global warming. We have passed the 400 ppm of CO2 level which is what scientists have said will make the global warming irreversible. Some of the members of the richest countries are denying climate warming due to massive amounts of funding from the oil, coal and gas companies into their pockets. In another 10 or 20 years, it will become unlivable due to violent storms, flooding, droughts, and wildfires. We should not even think of coal plants and should replace them with the wind and solar energy. Please see the two articles below:

We can’t wait to meet those paragons of ability, virtue and sweetness !

Central Bank bond fraud is the largest fraud in this country with lifetime cost in today’s terms coming to 125 billion rupees.
At the same time, the corrupt UNP regime pushes ahead with other frauds – VAT, more federalism and ETCA. We must be aware of these as well. JO politicians (not much different to UNP MPs) seem to have forgotten about those other issues that are backed by external “superpowers” – IMF, West and India. So they focus only on the bond fraud, that too mostly outside parliament. I have not heard the JO leader make any speech in parliament on the bond fraud, VAT, budget or anything important. If the parliament is unimportant, he must leave it.
November 6th, 2016 at 11:09 pm
Gonsal’s list is CORRECT but SL people have their family parties. They will NOT BUDGE. Politicos know this. They play hell but make sure their CORE VOTERS are glued to them.
This is why a NEW PARTY CANNOT win. The ONLY WAY to beat UNP is to takeover SLFP leadership.
GL Pieris was made the leader of the new party. SLFP sacked him! Now GLP cannot crossover even if he wants to without going to the feet of CBK. Other JO people BAITED POOR GL and escaped.
MR will never leave the SLFP and become a member of a new party. Maru Sira knows that. So Maru Sira is not worried. Near the next big election Maru Sira will INVITE MR to contest from the SLFP promising him the PM post. But after MR wins, Maru Sira will appoint another SLFPer as PM.

I hope this Bond Scam case also will not end up the same way as former PM’s (Dimu) kudu case for which MR as the then Prez was deaf and blind.
BTW, what happened to the near one ton of Heroin and cocaine that was caught since then. The current Prez and Finance Minister were seen personally taking charge. I hope the stuff since that time has not vapourized in courts. According to reports kudu is very cheap in SL now under yahapalanaya, perhaps the only thing they managed to reduce the price. Well done. When outside powers want to take over a country they first drug the inhabitants. They did that to China.

Amidst reports that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was preventing the arrest of former first lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa over the murder of ruggerite Wasim Thajudeen, President Maithripala has revealed that Thajudeen’s murder case is in fact being suppressed.
In an interview with the Sunday Times, Sirisena said, “the Thajudeen case which is being investigated by the Criminal Investigations Department is being suppressed.”
He also said that the culprits behind the Treasury Bond scam at Central Bank must be punished.
Sirisena also claimed that his recent statement against the FCID, Bribery Commission and the CID were taken out of context, specially by the English media, which wrongly interpreted him over the statement delivered at SLFI. He said that he was always of the view that investigations and cases into large scale corruption cases should be expedited, but instead some were suppressed, such as Thajudeen’s case, as well as the case over the procurement of the MiG-27 fighter jets.
Sirisena said that he was not intervening in the investigation of such investigation agencies, but it was important to highlight the truth, or else the public will assume that he was not focusing on these matters. “What I am trying to say is that the action should be expedited and done effectively,” he said.
He also said that he was aware that the officers of the Bribery Commission, FCID and CID were doing a great effort, but emphasized that it was important to expedite cases, because some of the cases have dragged on much more than the expected time period of the public.
“The people expected speedy investigations and results. It is already 20 months. The investigations should be expedited as it is nearly two years. The delay is the question,” he said.
Speaking on the COPE Report over the Treasury Bonds at Central Bank, Sirisena reiterated that as the Parliamentary Committee report is out, the report should be submitted to an independent, impartial body which does not have politicians. “If somebody has done wrong, he should be brought before courts,” he said.
Sirisena also added that the media had distorted his statement over the arrest of former commanders.
“As the Minister of Defence, and as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, I should be made aware if a serving or retired Commander is arrested and taken to courts. Like those serving, even those retired have links in the armed forces. The public perception should be understood when action is taken. We should not act against the will of the people. We should act in a manner where the wish of the public is fulfilled,” he said.

Like cricket. They never retire until kicked out. Some return even after kicked out.
Our politics has improved since 2005. That trend must continue.
Look at the schools of our leaders since 1948. It tells a story.
St Thomas, Royal Colombo, St Thomas, St Thomas, St Bridget’s, St Thomas, St Bridget’s, Royal Colombo, St Joseph’s, St Bridget’s.
Absolute madness! Then in 2005 onwards.
Nalanda/Thurstan, Royal Polonnaruwa.
This trend has to continue. NO NEED to bring back another ROYAL-THOMIAN leader.
UNFORTUNATELY, OPPOSITION LEADERS still continue from that lot. Opposition leaders’ schools since 1948.
Royal Colombo, Royal Colombo, St Thomas, Royal Colombo, St Thomas, St Bridget’s, Royal Colombo, Royal Colombo, St Bridget’s, Royal Colombo, Nalanda/Thurstan, Royal Colombo, St Sebastian’s
Madness!
We are in a RIGHT ROYAL (THOMIAN) mess and we don’t need anymore of the same!

Thank you Gonsal and Piyadigama.
I will make a donation.
The BILLIONS we borrowed should have gone to these people and the like.
IF 0.000001% of our loans from foreign countries had gone to people like this, they would be over 100,000 rupees richer!!
Patriots’ blood boils when thinking of MONEY WASTING POLITICIANS.

The PITTING of people from different schools against each other is a DESTRUCTIVE ZERO-SUM GAME that only those who wish to destroy Sri Lanka engage in.
The leaders of this country, of my father’s generation, who fought for and gained independence from the British, were educated in the best schools of their day.
Given that under British Colonial Rule, Sinhala Buddhist Government schools LARGELY DID NOT EXIST, and PRACTICALLY ALL of the elite schools were Christian Private Schools like S. Thomas, St. Bridgets, St. Josephs, St. Peters etc, with Royal College, Buddhist Ladies College and possibly Hindu College in Jaffna being ALMOST the SOLE EXCEPTIONS.
The elites of all communities struggled hard to get into these select few schools, knowing that their children’s future depended on getting an “English Education”. Only by getting an “English Education” could they hope to progress in a colonized country, whose colonial overlords largely looked down upon and denigrated the Sri Lankan culture and non-Christian religions.
Even in my generation spanning the first 20 years after independence, that situation largely prevailed, although under successive Sinhala Buddhist dominated governments many Sinhala Buddhist schools, like Ananda, Nalanda, Dharamaraja, Vishaka, and Mahamaya, to name but a few, began to excel and even surpass the colonial schools in the quality of education.
This rapid transformation was initiated and driven by the new principles of governance that emerged from SWRD’s Revolution that gave primacy to the advancement of the masses.
Today, although the old “Colonial Schools ” still excel, the best schools in the land for quality education, and as measured by the PERFORMANCE in the national exams and in admission to the universities, are NO LONGER the schools in Colombo, but new schools in the outstations.
Among them, are many new National Colleges and Madya-Maha-Vidyalayas, that DID NOT EXIST in my school going days, that send the majority of students to the universities. Although Colombians should have a greater edge in education, today the BEST RESULTS and the majority of entrants now come from the outstation schools.
Given the situation in newly independent SriLanka, it is UNDERSTANDABLE that Colombians dominated the professions and the government in the early years. But, most of the PATRIOTIC politicians who led the independence struggle and the post-independence governments, who were products of the “Colonial Schools”, WORKED HARD IN THE NATIONAL INTEREST to benefit ALL of the people of Sri Lanka, and not only the ELITE.
This was true not only in EDUCATION, but in almost every area critical to ECONOMIC WELL BEING and UPLIFTING the lot of the masses. Almost every index of measurement of Sri Lanka’s progress in assuring SOCIAL EQUITY testifies to the success of that effort by those so-called “Colombians” denigrated by some commentators here.
It is TRUE that only in the last decade we seeing leaders educated in the new outstation schools gaining prominence and taking the helm to govern our country. That shows that it takes almost two generations to turn around the adverse effects of historic denial of education even in the most progressive newly independent nations.
This emergence of non-Colombians to prominence is ALTOGETHER PROPER and AS IT SHOULD BE, for they represent the vast masses of people now well-educated in post-independence Sri Lanka. They are the beneficiaries of the policies implemented by the reviled “Colombians” of the past, and it is to achieve that the previous generations labored.
Those “Colombians” were our parents who had no other choice but to get the best possible education for themselves and their descendants in a very difficult discriminatory situation of Colonial Serfdom that had denied them equal access to a quality education. If we had not gained independence, the division of the people into a small colonial elite and an impoverished exploited majority would survive to the present day.
The leaders who led the charge to benefit the masses were largely Sinhala Buddhists. Unlike the leaders of the Brahmin Hindus of India who immolate themselves in the streets to deny equal rights and a quality education to their Hindu masses, they labored mightily to provide the Sri Lankan masses the same advantages they themselves had enjoyed.
I often ask myself why it is that in Sri Lanka we have been able to achieve that level of SOCIAL EQUITY and PROGRESS by every objective measure, when related peoples of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh etc have not been able to match our progress.
What is the underlying REASON for this UNIQUE ACHIEVEMENT? Differences in scale of available resources, and other problems cannot explain the results.
The answer is CRYSTAL CLEAR to me; it lies in the OVERWHELMING INFLUENCE of the Buddhist RELIGION of the MAJORITY SINHALA BUDDHIST COMMUNITY and its LEADERS, with its teaching of TOLERANCE and EQUITY for ALL without DISCRIMINATION, that made it possible to EUITABLY DISTRIBUTE THE NATIONAL RESOURCES to all without regard to SEX, CASTE, RACE or RELIGION of the citizens.
That led to the HIGH LEVEL OF SOCIAL EQUITY we see in Sri Lanka today, compared to our neighboring countries in South Asia.
In CONCLUSION, let us not DEMONIZE the Colombians of YESTERYEAR for they did the best they could with the hand they were dealt.
INSTEAD, let us CELEBRATE what they have achieved to ENABLE vast numbers of non-Colombians of today to move ahead to govern the nation with PATRIOTISM & CONFIDENCE in their own ABILITIES!
Let us devote EVEN GREATER ASSETS in the FUTURE to further develop the educational infrastructure throughout the country, so all regions enjoy the same level of access to excellent educational facilities, thus enabling more and more non-Colombians to participate in the governance of the nation that WE call HOME!

Agree with Ananda, but the term “COLOMBIAN” does not mean “they are from Colombo”. I too went to one of those schools but that doesn’t make me a COLOMBIAN.
As I understood Colombians are the people who value western culture than ours. A man from anywhere can become one after forgetting how he came to that position and with whose help.

It is a JOKE SL with majority BUDDHISTS are ruled ALWAYS by people BRAINWASHED in WESTERNIZED schools. Some have a very strong WESTERN TRADITION. It is very easy to brainwash KIDS. SCHOOLS are where it all starts.
This is why SL RULERS are detached from the masses.
COMPARED rally MR went complaining about COST OF LIVING and rallied NR go complaining about the same thing.
One was sincere but the other was BAILA.
Buddhist, Christian, Hindu and Muslim COLOMBIANS TOGETHER rule SL while fooling the MAJORITY. They are all from the same set of schools.
Who are they fooling?
How long they can fool the masses?
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. We need a more appropriate set of leaders brought up in a SL CONTEXT. They have weaknesses but that is OK. They UNDERSTAND the masses. NEVER AGAIN any SL leader or opposition leader from any of the westernized schools I listed!!!
We need leaders who have swam in village brooks. Who have gone to paddy fields (not for fun). Who have been trained in SL CONTEXT schools to value what is SL.
Remember Anagarika Dharmapala said – they will give you independence you fools. But they will leave brown sahibs who will rule you. They will tell you Tamilians are Singhalese are the same. Muslims and Singhalese are the same. You modayas will look on like the MONGOOSE THAT ATE WILD BANANA.
We want to come out of this RIGHT ROYAL (THOMIAN) MESS!

Dear Ananda,
We cannot put all Colombians in to the same basket, there are those who contributed much to the well being of our country. The Anand and Nalanda Colleges have turned out many national leaders. I agree with the reasons you give about why Sri Lanka is different from other countries in Asia achieving n progree and social equity. Sri Lanka’s uniqueness lies in its Buddhsit Culture, which unfortunately was not shared by the minority Communities in Sri Lanka. If they did our country would have been a model for others to follow.
Nevertheless living side by side with the Buddhist culture alone, without trying even to understand it the other Communities have got rubbed into them our Buddhist Culture, which make the Sri Lanka Tamils and Sri Lanka Muslims distinguishably different from other Tamils and Muslims, when you meet them outside Sri Lanka.

Agree totally with Ananda’s beautifully expressed write up.
It is the SIMPLE TRUTHS of Buddhism, the REALITIES OF LIFE THAT BUDDHISM PRESENTS, that enables Lanka to progress in Education and other spheres of Life.

EDUCATION is important.
So is LAND ownership. MOST OF THE LAND MUST REMAIN IN THE OWNERSHIP OF THE PEOPLE OF LANKA – That is, Govt owned.
Sri Lanka is small island, 25,000 sq miles in size.
Lanka cannot afford SALE of LAND to foreign interests.
Some solutions :
– There can be several Free Trade Zones all over the island, including the North, to accommodate businesses.
– Co-operatives in many spheres of activity will promote equality and harmony.

Yes, Ranil Wickramasinghe must resign immediately. This is the honourable thing to do. The country should be run by a PM who holds the confidence of most people. This is very important. Someone else who holds the confidence of the people should be appointed the PM by President Sirisena. Besides, Arjunan Mahendran did say the PM, meaning Ranil, asked him to do it. Therefore he should resign immediately which is the honourable thing to do and let any investigations take place without any interference. In other countries, this is what happens after this type of incident. So it is not at all unique.
