    The current consensus among anthropologists is that ALL humans (ie. homo sapiens) originated in East Africa, and later migrated out of Africa to other parts of the world. First they migrated to the Middle East, Europe and East towards Persian and India. Later they spread across land bridges that existed then to the Americas and Australia.

    Apparently, the gene pool of those early migrants is quite narrow, and that despite apparently different superficial racial features, people throughout the world have mostly the same DNA. That is, very small differences in the DNA are responsible for the all of the superficial differences we see between people of different races today.

    As such, if ALL humans originated in Africa, it is not surprising that Dravidians originated there as well.

    @Ananda

    You are mixing up times.

    True, all humans originated from Africa and spread around the world. At that time there were no linguistic or ethnic groups. It was about 60,000 to 20,000 years ago. Language, ethnicity, worship practices or other civil groupings had not emerged then. This discussion is not about that.

    Dravidians were humans living in Africa during historic (not pre-historic) times. By this time linguistic and ethnic groups had emerged in many parts of the world; certainly in Sri Lanka and the land called India. It was in this time Dravidians migrated to India, etc. from East Africa as a distinct ethnic group.

    Early humans that migrated out of Africa didn’t carry with them religion, language or anything specific. But Dravidians did because hisitory had begun by then. For instance the most popular Tamil god Murugan is an African god by the name Murunku with the same specifics. Most commonly used Tamil words are African (Sumerian and Nubian). Even ancient Tamil religious recitals including Maha Vakyams are of the same origin.

    Actually Tamil historical texts support the view. Sangam period (the earliest historical period of Tamils in India) started in the 3rd centiry BC. By then even Wijaya had arrived in Sri Lanka for over 300 years. Tamils also believe in Kumari Kandam – a large continent from where they came from. This is Africa and not an imaginary continent in the Indian Ocean. If you look at now established continental drift theory, you can see there was no landmass south of Sri Lanka (other than Antarctica).

    This may also explain why Dravidian language speakers are only 15% of South Asia and are confined to the South Indian and north Sri Lankan parts with a coast. South west India is connected to Africa through a chain of islands and shallow seas facilitating rudimentary water craft to travel. Dravidians are well known seafarers.

    Dilrook,

    Thank you for correcting me.

    You are quite right about the relevant anthropological age. I was referring to pre-historic evolution and not more recent historic times and therefore my comment was not relevant.

    This is a pitfall of commenting without reading and digesting the entire article.

    @Ananda

    But you are spot on about the bigger issue about the human race. I must confess that I have read Clyde Winters years ago so had prior knowledge.

  5. AnuD Says:

    Recently, they found a continent underneath New Zealand extending to Mauritius. Dravideans should have lived in that continent and once that continent went under sea water. Dravideans should have have moved to adjoining lands.

    Australian aborginies, AFricans and Indian south indians are supposed to be genetically related.

    All people came from Africa but the Dravidians are the last to come to India with the Continental drift that clashed against the mainland Asia, thus forming the mountains at Himalaya. They too ended up in Australia.
