The office of Speaker Karu Jayasuriya yesterday accepted a no-faith motion against Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake submitted by the Joint Opposition (JO) over his alleged involvement in Central Bank bond scams in Feb. 2015 and March 2016.

At the time of the alleged scams, UNPer Karunanayake held finance portfolio. President Maithripala Sirisena appointed him foreign minister in May this year in a minor Cabinet reshuffle.

A spokesperson for the Speaker’s Office told The Island that Deputy Secretary General and Chief of Staff of the parliament Neil Iddawela accepted the no-faith motion on behalf of the Speaker.

Thirty seven members of the JO signed the petition.

The JO comprises about 52 members elected on the UPFA ticket at the August 2015 parliamentary polls.

Having handed over the petition, JO leader Dinesh Gunawardena told The Island that they would officially call for the support of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), the JVP as well as the SLFP group in the yahapalana government.

MP Gunawardena said they would push for an early date for the no-faith motion at the next party leaders’ meeting.

Responding to a query, Gunawardena said the JO expected those members of parliament who had been publicly critical of bond scams to throw their weight behind the no-faith motion.

The SLFP on the instructions of President Maithripala Sirisena lodged the first complaint against the bond scams in early 2015 with the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC). Subsequently, President Sirisena appointed three-member Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) in January this year to probe the serious allegations, the JO leader pointed out.

Gunawardena said the JO was acting on the revelations made at the PCoI as well as COPE reports prepared by former MP Dew Gunasekera and MP Sunil Handunetti.

Provincial Council and Local Government Minister Faiszer Musthapha repeatedly declined to comment on Foreign Minister Karunanayake’s conduct at yesterday’s SLFP press conference.

Minister Musthapha said that as a President’s Counsel he was cautious and would comment once the PCoI submitted its report to President Sirisena.

Minister Musthapha praised President Sirisena for having appointed the PCoI. When The Island pointed out that the President could have thwarted the second bond scam if he had acted soon after the first one, Musthapha asked what would have happened if PCoI had never been set up.

The SLFPer said the UNP should deal with Minister Karunanayake.

The Ravi Karunanaya, previously anointed South Asia’s “Best” Finance Minister and a whiz-bang economist, now says HE DID NOT KNOW how he came to live 9 months in a Super Luxury Penthouse, and DOES NOT REMEMBER many other relevant details of his dealings with the Bond Scamming family-friend Arjuna Aloysius.

Even if we accept such an “BOLONDA” EXPLANATION of his CROOKED DOINGS, can we CONTINUE TO ACCEPT such a IGNORANT THOTHA-BABA as a Foreign Minister, much less a Finance Minister. Either he is a WHIZ-BANG CROOK, or he is a NAIVE MUTT; he CANNOT SIMULTANEOUSLY BE BOTH!

Like his PREDECESSOR the former Foreign Minister Avamangala Samaraweera who BETRAYED our Motherland to the UNHRC in Geneva to SUCK-UP to Western Powers, with his current INABILITY to REMEMBER Ravi Karunanayake MAY ALSO FORGET which Nation he is SERVING as Foreign Minister! We SIMPLY CANNOT AFFORD to have this man in the CABINET!

It is BEST if he is IMMEDIATELY REMOVED from his post in case his MENTAL DISABILITY worsens, and is taken into PERMANENT PROTECTIVE CUSTODY and placed under the care of Psychiatrists and Neurologists who can treat him for his Advanced Alzheimers malady in Angoda Mental Hospital!

It is indeed RATHER AMAZING how RAPIDLY his mental condition has DETERIORATED in theshort time since he was anointed as the Best Finance Minister in Asia and the astoundings revelations to the Presidentail Committee investigating the Bond Scam!

The PROSPECT of facing a TEAM OF INTERROGATORS from the Attorney General’s Office DOES HAVE THAT CURIOUS TENDENCY to SUDDENLY CONFUSE the MIND of ERRANT & CORRUPT POLITICIANS.

Lifetime INCARCERATION in Angoda Hospital should cure it.

Patali Champika Ranawaka who ALLEGEDLY INVOLUNTARILY WARDED his amorous assistant with a beautiful girl-friend at Angoda Mental Hospital can serve as a Managing Consultant in Ravi Karunanayake’s case too!

In Ravi Karunanayake’s DEFENCE we MUST RECALL, that this is the VERY SAME MAN who confused Pamankada with Alimankada and Medawachchiya with KIlinochchiya during the last phase of the EELAM war! Perhaps this condition IS EPISODIC and EMERGES SUDDENLY to DISABLE his mental faculties!

All us unwilling bystanders in this Yamapalana Comedy Show can do maybe is to HELPLESSLY INTONE: Nidukwethwa, Suwapathwethwa, Ninvandakithwa!

Unfortunately, Ravi Karunanayake is a die-hard Roman Catholic; He is unlikely to APPRECIATE our fervent Buddhist blessings!

  3. Ananda-USA Says:

    SA Kumar,

Ah yes, let Ravi get a 9-5 job abroad from the Tamil Diaspora and see whether he can hack it!

Hopefully, he will have recovered from his memory sufficiently by then to add numbers and adhere to Standard Accounting Ethics without ending up wearing a striped suit in a prison cell right next to the LTTE-sponsor Raj Rajaratnam!

Good Riddance to Bad Rubbish, I say!
