Sadly, Gotabahaya contradicts the action of the Mahinda camp. Mahinda camp has agreed to contest with Sirisena’s SLFP on conditions. This is possible because Gotabaya wants to avoid ending up in jail. This is how Sirisena has blackmailed the JO. If he truly doesn’t care about ending up in jail, Mahinda’s SLPP has no reason to join with Sirisena’s SLFP. This is the curse of clan politics.

The two charges against Gotabhaya that I know of are the Mig deal and Lasantha’s case both of which are no issues to average citizen. He may have bought Mig jets as no other country was willing to sell jets like those to us at that crucial period. We cannot buy anything from a country like Ukrain in the normal way. Even the amount involved is insignificant looking at what was at stake.The west had imposed sanctions on us and I read so many articles by the traitor Lasantha critical of governments actions against the terrorists. He was acting as their agent. If he was killed by someone that was the best for the country at that time. To my mind those two actions helped us win the war. Even a horse shoe nail can tilt the balance in a war.

There was no fraud in the MiG deal. It is all fabricated nonsense. 6 working jets for $18 million is a bargain. These jets played a major role in winning the war.
Present cases are on the Welikade prison incident and the allegation of mishandling civil orgnisations’ funds.

Dilrook, isn’t it the case that the JO, let alone the SLPP, DID NOT offer to join the slfp shell that you-know-who is leading? The faction that is in desperation (you know which faction) is making overtures to the newly emerging MR-led front including the SLPP for a reconciliation purely for the purpose of avoiding certain electoral decimation. As for your assertion: “Mahinda camp has agreed to contest with Sirisena’s SLFP on conditions. This is possible because Gotabaya wants to avoid ending up in jail.”, I am afraid you are labouring under a delusion. MR is a pragmatist, but he will never agree to any such thing. He knows where the public opinion is swinging. Nevertheless, he didn’t fight the war and he didn’t start development programs, blindly following what was popular. Opponents accuse him of populist politics. But I think, supported by evidence, that he prioritised principles over mere popularity. To suggest that he will succumb to Sirisena’s attempted blackmail so Gota would escape jail is an unwarranted insult to Gota as well as to MR. For one thing, Gota has not done anything wrong to deserve imprisonment. Of course, the really good things he did could be interpreted as bad things by distorting facts. The Avant Guarde affair is a case in point. The successful quelling of the Welikada prison riot is another. When such allegations fail to provide legitimate grounds for his arrest, the yamapalana hounds seem to be resorting to their usual startegy: falsely accusing him of misuse of public property in relation to the building of the D.A. Rajapakse Memorial. (No irregularity has been committed in the last mentioned instance, as pointed out by several reliable persons. If you like, please read C.A. Chandraprema’s Politics column in today’s Sunday Island.
I’d also like to print below, the last paragraph of my comment on another item elsewhere in the Lankaweb today (November 26):
” If he must resort to blackmail to silence challengers in order to remain in power after three years as president, it only proves that he supports others’ alleged wrong doing if it is beneficial for him. But Sirisena clearly doesn’t have that option, because he will be required to blackmail MR and Gota. But more than three years of witch hunting has not produced any incriminating evidence against them, even in spite of the yahapalanaya’s well known readiness to manufacture such evidence or to create witnesses against them through monetary rewards. My friends may read a recent interview with MR in the Sinhala newspaper Divaina today (Sunday November 26th , 2017), also reproduced in lankacnews.com regarding merger talks between the official SLFP and the JO to clear their minds of doubts, if any, about the impossibility of Sirisena’s hopes of winning through blackmail being realized.”

Elections will not do any good for the masses unless those that are to be elected are good. The people who are clamoring for elections are the racketeers in previous and present governments with their ill gotten money. The prez should be allowed to clean up the mess created by these racketeers in scams like the CB bond before going for elections. Let us see whether he is going to do what he says. In the mean time he should protect the war veterans from the inimical forces that are trying very hard to destroy them.

Aloy,
You must be dreaming. How could he do that when he too is protecting crooks. Strange that you still have hopes on him. He is only a good NALUWA.

One of the persons in the list to be charged was appointed chief of a governement department after the intervention of ex-president despite coming from a UNP family, after the request was made by his doctor who was her brother in law. That will give you an idea of Yahapalanaya in Sri Lanka. However it was against a similarly experienced and qualified persons. I don’t blame MR for that, I blame the person who was simply greedy for the post, only to be hled for 1 year or so.
UNP and SLFP are not enemies. I am sure Gota will be prevented form arrest. Even if an arrest is made, he will spend few days in hospital before getting the release on bail.

@Vaisrawana
Mahinda stated that they will contest with the SLFP if their conditions are met. Please watch the video of his interview after the DA Rajapaksa memorial event. Accordingly 3 persons each from each camp will meet tomorrow.
Whether Sirisena will ultimately win by blackmail is a different thing but Sirisena is attempting blackmail. Mahinda had agreed to discuss the matter. If he had no fear, he would have totally rejected any alliance with the SLFP (my preferred position).
UNP’s FCID and presidential commissions and other investigative bodies have not filed action against anyone of the clan. They are holding on to those cases for the most opportune moment. It doesn’t mean they have no evidence. They are in the process of silencing all around the clan forcing the clan to a tight spot before taking legal action.
Sirisena is far more vicious and calculating than he seems. With 50 years political experience he knows how to get things done.

That is what India want. When backing Mahinda in 2005 over Ranil India did not take Gota in to the account when profiling Mahinda. An Indian imperialist woman who is a leading Human Rights activist and a former Time Magazine journalist has said Gota is the worst human rights violator in the conflict out of all including the LTTE and IPKF. The three puppets of India Chandrika, Sirisena and Ranil do what India tells them to do. They want to keep their jobs at the next election.
