Civil society activist Namal Kumara, who recently alleged a conspiracy against President Maithripala Sirisena and wartime Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa is now under investigation by the Criminal Investigation (CID) following a complaint by the Presidential Secretariat.

Dr. Samantha Kumara Kithalawaarachchi, Director, Presidential Task Force on Drug Prevention yesterday said that a complaint had been lodged with the CID seeking an inquiry to ascertain whether Namal Kumara, a resident of Warakapola engaged in any fraudulent activity on the pretext of being an employee of the Presidential Secretariat.

In a statement issued yesterday, the official said that Namal Kumara hadn’t been on the Presidential Task Force on Drug Prevention though he served as a volunteer in the Kegalle District in support of anti-drug project undertaken by the Task Force. Namal Kumara was described as one among over 20,000 volunteers involved in the project.

Addressing the media in Kandy on Sept 13, Namal Kumara alleged that a DIG who was previously in charge of the Terrorist Investigation Division (TID) conspired with him to assassinate the President and the former Defence Secretary.
