Minister of Industries Wimal Weerawansha and Hambantota International Port Group (Private) Limited (HIPG) held a meeting regarding a proposal to set up a tyre factory in Hambantota at the Ministry of Industries, Colombo 03 recently.
HIPG CEO Ray Ren said the first tyre factory was to be built with an investment of USD 300 million. He also said that 2,000 employees are required for the factory and they would be recruited from the area. Also all the materials needed for the production of tyres would be obtained from Sri Lanka.
Here, a proposal was made by the HIPG to promote industry in Sri Lanka which was subsequently presented to the minister. The factory will be constructed at the Hambantota International Harbour premises in the 280 hectares large industrial zone.

Good news I say.Rehouse the people who are settled in plots of land and who are shouting at the government to come and give them water, clean their drains and even dig their lands. It is the wrong idea to give plots’ of lands to people who are non productive who will react against the same politicians who gave those lands.
I notice this mistake at Dodangaslana where our private lands were the only that produced coconut, pepper, bannana, gurkins etc while the plot holders supposed to go through our lands to worship at the Reedigama temple but they only go through to worship when the coconut pick was collected laid on the ground every 3 months.
My advise to the government is to rehouse these people to any workers quarters built by the tyre factory then the question about politicians are pressurized to provide facilities will be diminished. This what the colonials did in their estates and this is what Sri John did in his big estate at Dodangaslandqa where I bought part of it.They are now with no income without me owning that productive land.
With limited land in the country politicians musn’t give state lands for political gain as it will rebound on them eventually. Let firms with knowledge run our plantations just like what is staring to happen in Africa and these firms will employ the people.
