Measures are underway to introduce a law similar to the Social Media Regulation Act of Singapore to regulate social media, such as YouTube and Facebook, in Sri Lanka, President Ranil Wickremesinghe said on Friday (06).

According to Hiru News, President Wickremesinghe pointed out that Sri Lanka has laws pertaining to newspaper and broadcasting media, but does not contain laws pertaining to social media.

The President further said that thereby, he has received a copy of Singapore’s Social Media Regulation Act and will enforce a similar bill consisting of laws suitable for Sri Lanka in the near future.

He made the remarks during a meeting with the heads of various media platforms yesterday.
