Over 80 arrested on drug charges in special island-wide police operation

The special police operations that commenced this morning (17) across the island have resulted in the arrest of 83 suspects thus far, Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles said.

The Minister stated that this includes 45 suspects who had been wanted in connection with narcotics-related offences.

Sri Lanka Police commenced a special operation from today in order to eradicate drugs trafficking and the underworld in the country.

Over 100kg of Kerala cannabis seized in Ja-Ela

The Police Special Task Force (STF) has recovered more than 100 kilograms of Kerala cannabis during a special raid carried out at a house in the Ja-Ela area. 

The raid has been carried out based on a tip-off received by the police.

The street value of the stock of Kerala cannabis is estimated to be around Rs. 20 million, according to police.

Police said that further investigations are underway regarding the incident.

Meanwhile, the police have also arrested a 38-year-old woman, along with over 68 kilograms of Kerala cannabis at a house in the Bharathipuram area of Kilinochchi.

In a separate raid, a 53-year-old woman who had sold intoxicating pills to schoolchildren has been taken into police custody along with 1,310 intoxicating pills in the Colombo 14 area.

Suspect nabbed with Hashish worth Rs. 20 mn in Wattala

Police have arrested a person while in possession of 35 kilograms of ‘Hashish’ during a special operation carried out in the Wattala area today (17).

The street value of the seized narcotics is estimated to be around Rs. 20 million, according to Police.

42 arrested with various narcotics in joint raid at Kolonnawa

A total of 42 individuals have been arrested while in possession of various narcotics including heroin, ‘Ice’ (Crystal Methamphetamine) and Cannabis during a joint raid conducted by the Police, Special Task Force (STF) and Sri Lanka Army at the ‘Sanhinda Sevana’ flats in Kolonnawa.

The raid has been carried out on the orders of Acting IGP Deshabandu  Tennakoon, Ada Derana reporter said.

A total of 156 police officers including the officers of Western Province-South Crimes Unit, 154 personnel of the Sri Lanka Army and 16 officers of Police STF had joined the special raid, which was conducted early this morning (17).

Meanwhile, the police have also used drones and police K-9 units for the operation, according to Ada Derana reporter.

During this raid, the security personnel have searched 625 individualsfrom 165 houses at the ‘Sanhinda Sevana’ flats, the police said.

Of the 42 arrested individuals, 25 were arrested on suspicion while narcotics were found in the possession of the other 17 suspects, according to police.

Moreover, police have also taken custody of several sharp weapons including swords during the raid.
