Sri Lanka must say NO to animal sacrifice and ban this vile practice forthwith

We again visit the topic of animal sacrifice and probably will continue to do so until the moral and ethical dimension of killing animals born no different to man comes to a halt. Christians and Jews must receive plaudits for evaluating the practice of animal sacrifice in the light of modern day ethical thinking and deciding to end the act of ritual slaughter. It remains only for Muslims to decide though we know that despite being aware of the moral and ethical dimension to ritualistic animal slaughter a fraction of Muslims think that agreeing to do away with tribal and outdated culture would expose aspects of their religion that would eventually lead to Muslims walking away from acts that continue to bind them in blind faith. If there was an instance of sacrificing one-â„¢s son in any ancient book does that mean that everyone has to do the same every year? Life is precious to everyone including non -” human sentient beings. It is reverence for life that is the supreme ethic and not its destruction through animal sacrifice. In pre- colonial Sri Lanka those who killed animals and ate beef lost their rank and status overnight and were banished to the margins of society as outcastes. Social ostracism of -Ëœbeef eaters-â„¢ (Geri mas kanno) was so deep and widespread in ancient Sri Lanka that none dared to hurt or kill cattle or eat beef. ‚ ‚ ‚ ‚

Buddhist values save lives

Sri Lanka a country ruled by over 180 Sinhala Buddhist Kings following the tenets of Buddhist philosophy in treating all sentient beings with compassion had that moral element dethroned no sooner the country became subject to foreign invasion and occupation. What is disheartening is that post-independent leaders have chosen to walk away from the Buddhist tenets practiced by their forefathers and to replicate and adapt cultures and values that are not only foreign to the ethos of Sri Lanka but administers a slap on the face to what we claim to preserve. The amount of arguments gone into why animal sacrifice should not be allowed any more in Sri Lanka has unfortunately fallen on deaf ears. The Animal Welfare Bill which intends to introduce modern standards in the protection and caring for animals reflecting well entrenched universal moral and ethical values garners no support from politicians who incidentally sit in parliament largely because of the Buddhist majority vote. Once in power they appear to care less what the majority think or their sensitivities on subjects that matter to them.

Up-front and outspoken leadership of Putin

When Sri Lanka with over thousands of years of animal friendly cultural heritage to back the argument against animal sacrifice remains silent and Russia-â„¢s President Putin declares without blinking an eyelid that Russia bans animal sacrifice and instructs the Russian Department of National and Religious Policy to inform Muslims that the sacrifice of animals on the forthcoming holiday of Kurban-Bairam should be done only at dedicated sites outside the city limits of Moscow speaks volumes for the up-front and outspoken leadership of Putin. Yet, animal slaughter and animal sacrifice is now taking place unabated even in the Buddhist citadels of Anuradhapura and Mihintale once considered the -Ëœabhayadana-â„¢ areas without an iota of protest from our political leaders. Politicians increasingly simply walk away from their moral obligation because of funding and other remunerations that are coming their way.

Quotations

A few comments by people across the world wide web show the depth of thinking directed to animal sacrifice and continues to question why Muslims insist on doing what non-Muslims earnestly appeal to them not to in the interest of compassion and mercy towards innocent and defenseless animals:

‚·‚ ‚ ‚ ‚ ‚ ‚ ‚ ‚  Every one fears death, every one fears punishment, everyone loves his or her own life, take you yourself as an example and do not kill, do not hurt (Dhammapada)

‚·‚ ‚ ‚ ‚ ‚  ‘.Humans have made various stories and theories to justify killing of animals, because they want to please their taste buds. However both humans and animals are born in the same way they both live due to same reasons they both undergo getting sick getting old finally the unavoidable death. It is true that to be fully vegetarian is very difficult but animals are not born to satisfy human greed from their flesh. ‘

‚·‚ ‚ ‚ ‚ ‚  What happens is human as the most advanced animal has found some answers in religions which are made by man for the benefit of man because he feels guilty in his conscience when afflicting terrible pain to innocent animals who cannot communicate in our languages to explain their suffering and plight. We as humans are actually devastating the poor animals-â„¢ lives and families using our superior power and unlimited cruelty.

‚§‚  You should go to a slaughter house with your loved ones to see the horror the gentle animals go through in the name of religion and industry when they are murdered against their wishes. If you were one of them think what sort of emotions you will go through? I-â„¢m not against any religion I-â„¢m only against the cruel acts of humans in the name of religion. I hope one day there will be a law in this world banning the killing of animals for their corpses i.e. for animals-â„¢ dead bodies.

‚§‚  ” I would rather have Muslims go into poor areas of India or Haiti or China or anywhere in the world and satisfy the hunger of the entire community.”
I would rather have Muslims outgrow their cocoon and think for the entire humanity instead of their own community-.

‚§‚  When I read about the conditions the animals have to endure during transport I almost cried. How can this in any way be considered an honorable practice? I respect the fact that everyone has a right to their religious beliefs, but when it comes to the ill treatment and slaughter of animals, I have to disagree. There should be a law to protect innocent animals from these horrific “religious” ceremonies. If you want to harm another life because of your religious traditions that should be where we as a society draws the line.I really hope that this issue will come to the fore front and be dealt with.

‚§‚  No amount of Political Correctness can ever condone such utter barbarism! The gutters and streets literally run with the blood of so many sentient beings being held down and having their throats slit. Watch the videos, there are so many, and see the shocking joy on the faces of those watching these killings. There are even children watching with joyous faces. This is simply naked barbarism though justified in the name of religion. ‚ ‚

Buddhists must not be forced to sacrifice defending the first precept‚

What needs to be stressed is that to kill over 100 million animals for an annual religious festival in this modern day is unpardonable.

Buddhists should never be asked to sacrifice their first precept which is the fundamental premise of their philosophy -” how can Buddhists who follow Metta and Karuna for all living beings expect to watch and tolerate animal sacrifice i.e. home slaughter, take place in their midst. How can Buddhists or even Hindus be expected to have social relations or genuine friendships with those who behave like savages in their treatment or killing of animals? These are important moral and ethical issues that must be resolved with no loss of life to any living being. Whatever arguments given are denied by videos that depict the horrendous nature of animal slaughter.‚ ‚ ‚

No such animal sacrifice took place during pre-colonial rule and Muslims lived in Sri Lanka under Sinhala Buddhist Kings. On what basis is this new argument made that equates to mean that tolerating minorities, tolerance of other communities means that Buddhists must sacrifice all that they are taught to believe in and value and simply allow everything that goes against the Buddhist way of life to prevail and when Buddhists remind the world and the minority groups that arrived much later in Sri Lanka, that it was because of the Sinhala Buddhists that the civilization of Sri Lanka grew, that it was the Buddhist kings that built the nation up to the time of foreign invasion the immediate response is to brand Buddhists as extremists and racists using the money and power in their possession across the electronic media arena that is now attempting to usurp the power that majorities hold in Third World nations and pass on to minorities who are willing to allow and work with destabilizing elements so long as their ritual cultures can be allowed to prevail.

-ËœOne Sri Lanka-â„¢ nation -” a pipe dream

The so called -ËœOne Sri Lanka-â„¢ nation will remain a pipe dream if later cultures dictate and suppress the fundamental values of the original indigenous culture and the indigenous culture has to bow down and accommodate the later cultures whose values and religious practices are repulsive to people born and bred within an environment of metta and karuna to all living beings. Peaceful co -” existence between various communities can be achieved only when those who belong to cultures that arrived later in time to this country are prepared to respect and accommodate the religious ethos and sensitivities of the people of the original culture that built the unique Buddhist Civilization of Sri Lanka, that has won the honour and admiration of people the world over.

-The assumption that animals are without rights, and the illusion that our treatment of them has no moral significance, is a positively outrageous example of human crudity and barbarity. Universal compassion is the only guarantee of morality.-

Russia has 15% Muslim population. 5% higher than SL!!

Still he has the backbone to do it. Our MR, BR, GR, NR, CR fools are MARSUPIALS (without a backbone).

Recent Muslim-anti-Muslim riots in Russia also hardened Putin’s clout to implement these tough measures. But Putin has to stop Muslim ILLEGAL MIGRANTS to Russia SOON before AMEBA takes over Russia.

Give credit where it is due.

“Christians and Jews must receive plaudits for evaluating the practice of animal sacrifice in the light of modern day ethical thinking and deciding to end the act of ritual slaughter.”

OVER 70% of parliament of SL are Buddhists. OVER 2/3 majority!!

But they have been UNABLE to STOP animal sacrifice in this SACRED ISLAND NATION where Lord Buddha visited 3 times.

The problem here is NOT with Hindus and Muslims who HABITUALLY KILL animals and humans for sacrifice to Sun God and Allah.

The problem is with the BUDDHISTS who dispite having 2/3 power in parliament FAIL to ban animal sacrifice.

MOST Christians in SL parliament will SUPPORT such a move. But SL Buddhist MPs choose VOTES over Buddha. So they will NOT do it.

SHENALI !! I concur with every word you say. All those in Parliament are invertibrates and imbeciles, lining their pockets with moolah. They are not interested in Lord Buddha’s teachings and the precepts. More Ministers are being appointed to drain away the countries resources. These set of clowns in Parliament are partying with the monies earned to the country by the poor housemaids. Our females are going as servants to Arab households, to keep the Politicians always happy. They care two hoots about the animals lives, and how they are been mercilessly killed inflicting terrible pain. May those who participate in such killings be cursed, and their families and children be cursed.
Somewhere in some village 45 odd monkeys were found dead, apparently poisoned by the villagers. People are behaving like ANIMALS now. May the Lords above make the necessary changes.

  4. Sooriarachi Says:

Animal sacrifice should be totally banned. There is no need to have even a dedicated area for such sacrifice, which is a primitive custom that could be replaced with some other practice in keeping with a civilised world.

Animal SACRIFICES should be BANNED all over Sri Lanka. What is the need to Sacrifice some poor dumb Animal ? These are ancient and IGNORANT practices. Any country practising Animal SACRIFICE will be considered barbaric, backward and undeveloped by the west. Do we want that ? Such practices took place in Greece well over 2,000 yrs ago and they would be horrified to revive such practices !

If places of religious worship want to feed the poor, then ready made food (even meat) can be brought in and offered to the people instead of having gory animal sacrifices. Children watching such acts of animal sacrifice will have permanently damaged psyches – to them killing will be acceptable. Kill animals in this cruel fashion and next we will have human sacrifices (an excuse to kill humans too).

Tamil Nadu has banned animal sacrifices. The animal sacrifice practices come to Sri Lanka mostly via Tamils of Tamil Nadu
as well as from Muslims. It is the Tamil Dalits who practice animal sacrifice. If Tamils of Dalit origin want to advance in society, they must stop animal sacrifices.

If anyone wants to eat animal flesh, animals will have to be slaughtered in designated abattoirs set aside for such purposes. The very fact that there are religious prayers are offered before slaughter means that there is guilt attached to the act of killing beasts even for food. However, as some body types need animal flesh, then so be it.

Probably nothing of worth will happen in Sri Lanka till CHOGM IS OVER AND DONE WITH !

THERE WAS A ROYAL DECREE CALLED MAAGHAATHA IN SINHALE. THAT MEANS NO SLAUGHTER..

THERE WERE ATLEAST 3 KINGS WHO DECLARED MAAGHAATHA AGAIN AND AGAIN
ONE WAS KING MAHINDA”S FATHER- KAASHAYAPA THE 3RD WHO REIGNED DURING 717-724 AD
ATHER ONE WAS AAMANDA GAAMINI ABHAYA. I CANT REMEMBER THE OTHER ONE

WE NEVER ALLOWED ANIMAL SACRIFICES IN THIS COUNTRY AND NOBODY PROTESTED BECAUSE THIS COUNTRY WAS CONCIDERED AS A BUDDHIST COUNTRY BY EVERYBODY

I CANT BELIEVE WHY PRESENT MAHINDA IS HESITATING.. MAY BE HE IS A”‘” SON OF MACOLY”””” these people are brain washed by macoly education system

Here is another thing India should do instead of Interfering in Sri Lanka’s Domestic Matters: END HUMAN SLAVERY in India!

Thirty million people are slaves, half in India – survey

    by Timothy Large

LONDON, Oct 17 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – Some 30 million people are enslaved worldwide, trafficked into brothels, forced into manual labour, victims of debt bondage or even born into servitude, a global index on modern slavery showed on Thursday.

Almost half are in India, where slavery ranges from bonded labour in quarries and kilns to commercial sex exploitation, although the scourge exists in all 162 countries surveyed by Walk Free, an Australian-based rights group.

Its estimate of 29.8 million slaves worldwide is higher than other attempts to quantify modern slavery. The International Labour Organisation estimates that almost 21 million people are victims of forced labour.

“Today some people are still being born into hereditary slavery, a staggering but harsh reality, particularly in parts of West Africa and South Asia,” the report said.

“Other victims are captured or kidnapped before being sold or kept for exploitation, whether through ‘marriage’, unpaid labour on fishing boats, or as domestic workers. Others are tricked and lured into situations they cannot escape, with false promises of a good job or an education.”

The Global Slavery Index 2013 defines slavery as the possession or control of people to deny freedom and exploit them for profit or sex, usually through violence, coercion or deception. The definition includes indentured servitude, forced marriage and the abduction of children to serve in wars.

According to the index, 10 countries alone account for three quarters of the world’s slaves.

After India, China has the most with 2.9 million, followed by Pakistan (2.1 million), Nigeria (701,000), Ethiopia (651,000), Russia (516,000), Thailand (473,000), Democratic Republic of Congo (462,000), Myanmar (384,000) and Bangladesh (343,000).

The index also ranks nations by prevalence of slavery per head of population. By this measure, Mauritania is worst, with almost 4 percent of its 3.8 million people enslaved. Estimates by other organisations put the level at up to 20 percent.

Chattel slavery is common in Mauritania, meaning that slave status is passed down through generations. “Owners” buy, sell, rent out or give away their slaves as gifts.

After Mauritania, slavery is most prevalent by population in Haiti, where a system of child labour known as “restavek” encourages poor families to send their children to wealthier acquaintances, where many end up exploited and abused.

Pakistan, India, Nepal, Moldova, Benin, Ivory Coast, Gambia and Gabon have the next highest prevalence rates.

At the other end of the scale, Iceland has the lowest estimated prevalence with fewer than 100 slaves.

Next best are Ireland, Britain, New Zealand, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Luxembourg, Finland and Denmark, although researchers said slave numbers in such wealthy countries were higher than previously thought.

“They’ve been allocating resources against this crime according to the tiny handful of cases that they’ve been aware of,” said Kevin Bales, lead researcher and a professor at the Wilberforce Institute for the Study of Slavery and Emancipation at Hull University.

“Our estimates are telling them that the numbers of people in slavery – whether it’s in Great Britain or Finland or wherever – in these richer countries actually tends to be about six to 10 times higher than they think it is.”

Walk Free CEO Nick Grono said the annual index would serve as an important baseline for governments and activists in the anti-slavery fight.

“This kind of data hasn’t been out there before,” he said. “It’s a multi-year effort, and next year we’ll have a much better picture of where slavery is and what changes there are. If you can’t measure it, you can’t devise policy to address it.”

I read, even when Arahant Mahinda came, he talked about migrating birds rights in Sri Lankan skies. That is how Grand was Sinhale.

You are concerned about Sinhale and Sinhala Buddhists. How do you know, that Sri Lankan Leaders are also in the same boat ?

    We are unfortunate people.

One way is think of you fighting for the Presidency one day.
