Govt acquired all public entities sold for a song by previous governments

People should decide as to whether this country is to be divided into parts according to the needs of Tamil National Alliance (TNA) leader R. Sambandan and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) leader Rauff Hakeem or remains a united country where people of all communities live in peace, at the forthcoming Presidential election.

“Certain individuals of previous governments earned massive amounts of money by purchasing arms and the government led by me succeeded in ending this practice by eradicating terrorism in four years,” he said.

President Rajapaksa was addressing a mammoth rally to ensure his victory at the forthcoming presidential poll in Minuwangoda on Tuesday evening.

The President stressed that the decision is before the people as to whether the country which was united by the government crushing 30 years of terrorism, is divided into parts according to the demands of R. Sambandan and Rauff Hakeem or not. “Sirisena who boasts about good governance lifted the ban on several pharmaceutical items and

ordered the Ministry to purchase them through the companies owned by his son and a person called P. Dissanayake,” the President added.

The President said that Maithripala Sirisena who is trying to pull the wool over the eyes of the people in the guise of good governance is controlling the prices of rice throughout the country and he has sold the Government rice processing plant and paddy storage in Polonnaruwa without his (President’s) knowledge.

The President added that he wanted to refurbish the rice processing unit and the storage though the former minister had sold these.

“We have placed enormous trust in the ministers and do not interfere with their activities,” he said.

“Maithripala Sirisena acquired a highly valuable hotel in Polonnaruwa for Rs.1.5 million using his ministerial powers,” he added.

He said that the government acquired all public entities which were sold for a song by previous governments.

“The Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation and SriLankan Airlines were taken over by the government,” he said.

The President added that former President Chandrika Bandaranaike was found guilty of selling the Waters’ Edge hotel and the land to a private party for a song. A perch of land had been sold for Rs. 200 by her to a friend,” the President said.

The President added that her (Chandrika’s) friend built apartments and earned billions through this mega deal.

President Rajapaksa said that Maithripala Sirisena being a former Cabinet minister is also responsible for the allegations he makes about what happened during the past 10 years.

“Maithripala Sirisena says that he was suffering for the last 10 years under a dictatorial rule and that the government and myself committed many wrongs. But, he conveniently forgets that Cabinet Ministers are collectively responsible for any alleged wrongdoings and cannot shy away from that responsibility,” the President said.

The President added that Sirisena held two ministerial portfolios before being appointed as Health Minister. “I had to remove him from the two portfolios due to his incapability to run these ministries and handed over the Health Ministry to him later.

The President added that doctors and the people know how Maithripala Sirisena destroyed the entire health sector as the minister. This same Sirisena lifted the ban on several pharmaceutical items and ordered that these items be purchased through his son’s pharmaceutical company.

“The United National Party leader is scared to face Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Presidential election and they hired a candidate outside their party to challenge me,” he said.

He said that the UNP adopted this strategy by putting forward a former Army commander for the 2010 Presidential election. “This time they have retained a former SLFP General Secretary to take me on at the upcoming Presidential election,” he added.

“What Ranil Wickremesinghe wants today is to protect his post of Opposition Leader by using Sirisena as the cat’s paw for the Presdiential election,” he added.
