Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal  submitted his resignation from the post of Central Bank Governor to pave the way for the new President to appoint a person of his choice a news report said.

It’s a good thing for a new president to have a new governor, so I have paved the way for that.”

Cabraal, who held the post since 2006, is the first high profile Rajapaksa appointee to step down since the election.

Meanwhile, UNP Parliamentarian Dr. Harsha De Silva today said that Mr. Cabraal should answer to the financial allegations during his tenure before resigning. Dr. de Silva said There are a number of financial allegations relating to the Central Bank, Stock Exchange manipulation especially with regard to the use of EPF and Bond Market manipulations. Therefore, the Governor cannot simply resign without responding to these allegations,” he said

Cabraal last month held both of Sri Lanka’s benchmark interest rates for the 11th straight meeting as inflation was about the lowest in five years.

Standard & Poor’s warned today that Sirisena’s victory could bring a period of instability as he moves to keep an unwieldy opposition alliance from splintering.

Depending on political developments under the new president and possible changes in fiscal and economic policies, some credit metrics could weaken over the next two to three years,” analystAgost Benard wrote in a report today.

Why is he resigning ? To flee the country to Australia ?
If they have not done anything wrong they need not resign. They should wait until they are sacked.

  2. Nanda Says:

    I don’t understand this too.

“Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has resigned as Chairman of Lanka Hospitals Corporation PLC.

Meanwhile, Lanka Hospitals Corporation PLC Vice Chairperson Roshini S. Cabraal too has resigned from her post.”

This is a private company. Why are they resigning ?

Nanda, I would suggest, let’s not assume a person corrupt until proven guilty. (Freedom of expression available to all of us enable us to say whatever we wish, though wise people will not abuse that freedom by propagating lies). I believe in most situations, resignations are appropriate to pave way for the new administration to appoint those whom they feel are more suitable in carrying out the new programme of work. The Governor of the CBSL I think was the first to resign, and all others should follow.

    lokubanda,
I agree. But there are things you may not know and I personally know, so I would suggest you too do not assume underestimate commentators. I cannot disclose too much and do harm to personal friends.

But it is very important than all thieves are caught and due monies recovered. We expect this from honest leaders, if they claim so. Otherwise they are the same and shall be expelled.

If you are sharp enough, le me point out 1 incident. Did you watch the My3+Ruinill meeting with business people ? One man asked the question from Runill that whether he would continued to prosecute Chandrika. He said he never started any action against her and said why should we prosecute friends. My3, who was silent most of the time , suddenly took the microphone and said he would prosecute ALL wrong doers.
LEt us see whether he delivers.
