Rattled Ranil panics after Nugegoda rally: summons media heads
Posted on February 24th, 2015

H. L. D. Mahindapala

The 100-day programme of the My-3-pala-naya” had no plans to encounter the Nugegoda rally. Not so soon, at least. They thought they could sail smoothly into the imagined ideal country” located, of course, only in mythical Maithripala’s Manifesto. But within 40 days the My-3-planners” were hit by a backlash that no new elected government had ever faced in electoral politics. It is Ranil Wickremesinghe who is feeling the heat of the rising events going against his political ambitions. It is his Prime Ministerial seat that is at stake in the coming general  election. Maithripala Sirisena has  no such problems because  he is ensconced safely in his  presidential seat.

It is this turn of events that has made Wickremesinghe nervous. He is showing signs of a panic-stricken, nervous  wreck. He is hitting indiscriminately at anything that moves – from the Australian Prime Minister to editor’s who have criticized him. He  has now summoned newspaper owners to meet him to keep the media in line with his future. He has even invited anti-Rajapakse NGOs to this meeting, hoping to get their backing to suppress the press.

It is time that someone started feeding him with valium sandwiches morning, noon and night to calm his nerves. This champion of free media” – remember how  he  packed off Paul Harris, the correspondent of Jane’s Weekly and Daily Telegraph for exposing his deal with Prabhakaran? – feels that the only way to control the oppositional forces  rising against him is  to muzzle  the  media. To do this he has to cook up a plausible argument. Having promised the electorate that the media will be free he cannot be seen to have gone back on his word to suppress the opposition. He has to provide an excuse. And the excuse is : media  is  rousing  communal feelings!

So has anyone seen the Bodu Bala Sena, or even Champika Ranawaka who raved and ranted against the Muslims and Tamils in his recent tour of Australia just before the presidential election, whipping up communal feelings after  January 8 in the south? I was in the Monash University audience listening to Ranawaka predicting the end of the Sinhalese with the Muslims and the Tamils taking over  the nation within the next few decades with their powers of prolific procreation, money and scheming politics. Even he is silent as if  his mouth is stuffed with pittu now on the communal issue. Only Wickremesinghe has begun to see Sinhala-Buddhist communalists rising in the newspaper columns. Obviously, he hasn’t read TamilNet and Tamils newspapers. He is quitehappy to look the other way about Jaffna jingoism because it does not pose a threat to him. Only the alleged communalism of the Sinhala papers is seen as a threat to communal harmony. Which is Wickremesinghe’s way of saying that raising Sinhala-Buddhist  issue is a threat to him.

Apart from this,  there are early signs of Wickremesinghe cracking under increasing pressure. As a control-freak, with an obsession to gather all power into his  hands, the work load is bound to overwhelm him. There is no one else to blame except  himself for painting himself into this tight corner. Suddenly everything has begun to get on top of him and unsettle him.

First, he is the unelected Prime Minister without a majority in the House. His position is hanging in the balance  with his major political partners in the SLFP threatening to challenge his  authority with a no-confidence motion against one of his most reliable partners, John Amaratunga. He wouldn’t have given Police  powers to anyone other than whom he can trust. Remember Amaratunga  is the loyal Police Minister who concocted the story of Army trying target Wickremesinghe soon after he signed  the deal with Prabhakaran – a ruse to leak the names of the deadly and elite LRRP forces for the LTTE to target  them?

Second the work load is throwing him into a dizzy spin, with pressures from various lobbies crowding him and pushing him into corners from which he cannot  escape. His political IOUs are also coming home to roost. He is also struggling desperately to catch up with his 100-day time-table which he presented with President Maithripala Sirisena to the business community to impress that the My-3” team can achieve what they promise.  With each failure and falling behind his own time schedule he is beginning to look more like a lame duck than a dynamic reformer.

Third, cracks are developing  within his own ranks and his partners and he does not how to prevent these exploding forces from running  out  of control.

Fourth, in his koka-tath-thai-laya Manifesto he has bitten more than what  he can chew. The rosy optimism of  delivering promises on time is fading by the day. Ven Sobitha is now batting on the sidelines promoting  the idea of postponing the delivery date to two years.

Fifth, he wants to form a national government ONLY with him at the head, without giving  too much power to the other parties, even though they are in the majority. His obsession with power together with his paranoia is compelling him to poke his fingers into minute details in  the administration which is spinning beyond his control incrementally. It is impossible for him be at the top overseeing  the big picture and micro-manage the details at the bottom  simultaneously. Nor is he, at 65, that  healthy or physically strong to carry that work load.

Sixth, his gimmickry of presenting a seeni-bola” budget has come  and gone with hardly any impact on the electorate. He has already lost two Ministers – Faiz Mustapha and Prof. Rajiva Wijesinha (possibly). And counting. There is no new blood to give a shine to his regime. He has fallen back  on the tired old fogeys that led to his fall the last time.

Seventh, he lacks the charisma of  a leader who can win the confidence of the  people or a credible mandate from the electorate. He is in a very vulnerable position of depending  on manipulating a few ith-thas (pawns) at the top. He is now screaming his head off saying that he can  reduce Mahinda  Rajapakse’s majority. Isn’t this  another sign of his being on the verge of a nervous breakdown?

Last but not the least, an election is hanging over his head like a sword of Damocles and he knows that there will be hardly anyone to pick up his severed head.

His anti-Sinhala-Buddhist paranoia too is unsettling him. His first reaction  is to summon Sinhala newspaper editors and accuse them of  rousing communal feelings. He has blasted them as suck-killi-yas who cleaned Mahinda Rajapakse’s toilets”. Not stopping at that he has decided to have a go at the media owners. He aims to tighten his grip on the media from  the top and summoned the newspaper owners.

The reality is that the media has been subdued sufficiently and the state media has been cowed down. The media that ttaked  him aggressively when he was in the  opposition has turned to play his  kind of music. The state media, as per usual, has turned 360 degrees to be the Master’s voice. For instance, an NGO apparatchik  like Luxman Gunasekera has returned to The Sunday Observer to resume his anti-Sinhala-Buddhist campaigns.

The nervous and paranoid politics  of Wickremesinghe is revealed when he first blasted the Sinhala editors and then followed it up  with summoning  the newspaper owners on far-fetched charges of rousing communal passions without uttering one word about the  most  damaging racist attack coming from Northern journalists, academics, NGOs and politicos. The most provocative statement to disturb communal harmony was the anti-Sinhala resolution passed by the North Provincial Council resolution on February 10, 2015.

Not since the Vadukoddai Resolution was passed on May 14, 1976 has such a vicious, twisted, racist attack been unleashed by the North on the South. It is to  the credit  of the Sinhala-Buddhists that they have restrained themselves and not  gone on the rampage. When the Tamil leadership passes  a resolution projecting the entire Sinhala race as murderers of Tamils and accusing  the entire leadership, including Wickremesinghe’s blood relatives, as genocidal barbarians, it was his prime duty, as the Prime Minister, to defend the nation and its great leaders.

Which prime minister in the world would not defend his/her nation against such a sweeping denigration of its image? When, for instance, Prime Minister Dudley Senanayake, in passing made a remark that people  in Sri Lanka had not died of starvation like those in India. Indira Gandhi reacted furiously and Dudley, being  the gentleman that he is, apologized in parliament explaining that he  did  not mean to denigrate or insult India.

Imagine, for instance, the reaction of India if any southern provincial council had passed a resolution condemning  Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a genocidal murder for what he  did  in Gujerat? Whether true or not, is making such an accusation in sensitive times conducive for  reconciliation or easing the tensions between Indian and Sri Lanka? So is NPC resolution aimed at promoting reconciliation? Or is directed at confronting the Sinhala-Buddhists with the sole aim of destroying communal harmony? Isn’t Wickremesinghe’s silence a deliberate act of giving consent and encouragement to the anti-Sinhala-Buddhists who are vilifying  the nation  for their political gain?

If the Sinhala-Buddhists were the kind of genocidal killers as stated in C.V. Wigneswaran’s resolution would they have rescued 300,000 Tamils fleeing from the Tamil Pol Pot? Would  23,000 Sinhala soldiers have sacrificed  their lives to liberate the Tamil children from the gulags of Tamil Boko Haram? Why has Wickremesinghe been silent on this internationally significant and nationally sensitive issue? And why was he quick to turn his wrath on Sinhala editors and threaten newspaper owners by summoning them? As opposed to this, why is he purring like a pussy cat in the  lap of Wigneswaran and the NPC? Is it because  he got  their votes to get  into power? Is Wickremesinghe appointed to play the role of the Prime Minister or Prime Traitor?

Please note that the NPC resolution was sent to the UNHRC, demanding action against Sri Lanka based on the accusations listed in resolution. Any Prime  Minister, who has any respect for his people, would react forcefully, being aware of the serious consequences that would  flow from such grossly distorted and concocted lies. The silence of a prime  minister on a vital issue  like this is totally unacceptable by those people yearning for peace and reconciliation.

At a time when Western leaders in liberal democracies are demanding from minorities threatening the values  of the majorities total acceptance of the national way of life, language, and laws Wickremesinghe has no right to be silent when his nation” (I hope he agrees?) is condemned as a genocidal state by another community which has benefited most from sharing the riches, benevolence and welfare programs of the country.

It is inconceivable that Prime Minister Wickremesinghe can remain silent on a critical issue like this. His silence can  only mean that his uncles and grand-relatives were all murderous barbarians as  stated in the resolution. Besides, Wickremesinghe too was a part of the leadership that is accused of being genocidal murderers. The only missing part  in the NPC resolution are the atrocities committed at Batalanda. Could this be the reason why he is silent on the NPC resolution?  Is it with this record that Wickremesinghe proposes to contest Mahinda  Rajapakse in the coming election and reduce  his vote by five million?

More importantly, will the media owners cave in and go along with Wickremesinghe? They have a duty by the readers and not by Wickremesinghe  who does not even have a mandate from  the people, or parliament to be the prime minister. To  counter Wickremesinghe’s media offensive they can politely hand over a copy of the My-3”s” Manifesto highlighting the segment on  free media. They can even go further and cite the rules  of the International Democratic Union of which he is a Vice President.

The most incontrovertible argument against Wickremesinghe’s demand for compliance on the grounds of communal harmony comes from the West which is waging a life-and-death battle to defend free media against Islamic fundamentalists. The right of  the media to express freely, even when communal harmony is threatened, is exemplified in the case of Charlie Hebdo, the French satirical magazine which has inflamed passions  on both sides. Using  the Charlie  Hebdo stand to defend media  freedom, even above  communal harmony, the media owners should unmask Wickremesinghe’s fake hijab of taking cover behind communal harmony. He should not be allowed to import ISIS fanaticism duty free. He cannot promote communal harmony by imposing his dictatorship only on the journalists of the south. He must begin with the NPC politicians first. He must begin first by asking the NPC to apologize to the nation and withdraw its resolution. Communal harmony is a  two-way process. It cannot be attained  by suppressing the media  of the south.

The media owners should  not tolerate Wickremesinghe’s high-handed action to read the riot  act to them under the pretext of protecting communal harmony. That is a bogus issue, as pointed  out earlier. They must attend and  listen to him carefully. If Wickremesinghe threatens them they can walk out. For once, they can be guaranteed that the people will be with them.

  1. Leela Says:

I fully agree with Mahindapala that Ranil seemed to be feeling more than heat from Nugegoda rally. I too think the man must be feeling absolutely insecure or rather hopelessly apprehensive. Mahinda hadn’t declared his candidacy so far. Yet, Ranil goes even so far as to explain the public why Mahinda cannot win in a duel with him for the Prime Ministership. And this is in spite of him being the prime minister and assured the unreserved backing of the executive President who still hold all the powers other than to make woman a man. If there is a contest and Mahinda wins, Ranil knows, he’ll be kicked out by the very many Brutes partying with him right now. So the man is desperate, and he’ll resort to anything to win the coming up elections.

Just as 85% Tamils and Muslims allay with a kandahaliya opposition to rid of their (imagined) foe, Mahinda, we Sinhala Buddhists will have to pool with everyone to rid of our (real) enemy, Don Juan Ranil regardless they are pro or anti 13A. I feel My3, the pina chance President will not be a pea in that pod.

  2. Christie Says:

Namaste: Leela; What we need is unity among the Sinhalese that was destroyed by Banda the Governor of Indian Empire. Mahinda stood up to the all mighty Empire and we now have Governor Chandrika, Coolie Sirisena and Kankani Ranil. Jai Hind

  3. Hiranthe Says:

    We should wait for a while patriots, festina lente!!!;

Sorry that I am duplicating the post. But I want to stress the fact that if the new party is formed now, My3 and the clan will not dilute the executive powers of the President and MR will become a name sake PM similar to DM Jayaratne.

Now that MR cannot contest as the President, only option is the PM position. In order to make it a meaningful position, certain powers from EP should be given to PM. We should first push for that based on the Yahapalanaya promise and once it is done.. Run-Nil will be happy for a few weeks before MR announce his new move.

The other option is to keep quiet for a while. Yahapalana clan will be happy to keep all the executive powers to My3 without risking MR coming to power as the PM. Wait until My3’s term is over and put GR as the next presidential candidate.

Nugegoda Man can come forward and lead the campaign. Main slogan would be to abolish 13A and the wasteful Provincial Councils and to end corruption and develop the country. We will save a lot of money once the white elephant PC’s are abolished.

I guess it would solve most of the problems if not the Ealam is declared before then!!!

  4. Fran Diaz Says:

Cannot trust Sir Ranil to do the right thing by the masses of Lanka. A tree is known by its fruit …. and Sir Ranil’s past record has borne bitter inedible fruits for the masses of Lanka, from time to time. Cannot help but feel he would be happiest in London town.

  5. Cerberus Says:

Ranil is bigger traitor than I earlier thought. He did all the things possible to split Sri Lanka when he was Prime Minister earlier. Now that he is back he is criticizing Mahinda R who never criticizes anybody. I have never heard MR criticizing anyone. Not even Ranil W.

In an exclusive interview with The Australian, Mr Wickremesinghe confirmed the involvement of “people connected to the previous government” in people-smuggling operations.

He said “It was being done by people with Rajapaksa connections, but once this deal was done between Australia and the Rajapaksa government, where you looked the other way (on human rights abuses), then secretary of defence got the navy to patrol,” he told The Australian. “You could not have got anyone out of this country without someone in the security system looking the other way, the police or the navy.”

“It was a slip-up on the part of the Australian side,’’ he said. “I am not against the Australian government, but I think you must learn from your experiences. Some other countries must also that fully backed the Rajapaksa regime. When human rights were being trampled, and democracy was at bay, these countries were silent. That is an issue for Sri Lanka.”

My response is: what was Ranil W doing in the opposition if he knew human rights were trampled, and democracy was at bay. Did he not have a voice. Was not his buddy My3 there in the Rajapaksa Govt. All Ranil W did was to try and whip up Trade Unions to ask for wage increases. He could have brought up these issues in the parliament. Why did he not do it? How about the rehabilitation of LTTE cadre and the 300,000 Tamil civilians who were rescued by Mahind R and his Govt. Why does he not talk about all the good that Mahinda R did.

I think the whole country can see what a low person he is from his utterances. He has no loyalty to Sri Lanka or the GoSL of which he was a part of. He went round the world criticizing the GoSL managed to get the GSP removed for the garment industry when Mahinda R was in power. Now that he is there miraculously it has all been given back.

I can understand CBK distaste for the Sinhalese since her father and her husband were both killed by Sinhalese. In case of Ranil W I guess he has a deep seated anger towards Sinhala Buddhists since he lost elections 29 times and this time managed to become the Prime Minister by going behind My3. If he has a shred of honor left which I doubt he should back down and let the Parliament do their work. The no confidence motion the SLFP Parliament tried to bring against John Amaratunge was blocked by him. He must realize all his rantings are read by people and they are forming an opinion about him which will be hard to change. The more untruths RW says about Mahinda R, more sympathy the people will have for him.

When he talks about human rights being trampled what did he do at Batalanda? Why was the commission not allowed to have hearings? Did he think twice about the 44 long range intelligence soldiers names that he allowed to be revealed to LTTE so that they could kill them. How about sending container loads of long range communications equipment to the LTTE. He signed the agreement with LTTE (MoU) with Norway as Peacekeeper to let the LTTE run free in the North and East while the Sinhalese could not go to those areas. If not for Mahinda R by now all those areas would be under LTTE control. Why does he not talk about the Sinhala Genocide by the LTTE and the atrocities they committed under his leadership or lack thereof?

In the final analysis history will record his ignoble treacherous actions. He will be remembered as we remember the other traitors of the country. He professes to be Buddhist is supposed to have written a book about it. If so he should know that we are not going to live forever and in the short time we have on earth we have to do what is right and do the most amount of good for the most number of people. He can still save his reputation if he can remove the 13A. He can then boast that he did what even Mahinda R could not do.

  6. ranjit Says:

How can anyone trust an old haggard traitor like Ranil who has lost 29 times in elections to deliver or do anything good to the country? He was a man who took photographs with our vast enemy Prabakaran. He is the one who gave in writing half of our land to Prabakaran’s hand. He is the man who is now releasing all the lands which was occupied by the forces back to Tamils. He is the one who is allowing Muslims to build houses in East en-mass.He is the one who was responsible for killing thousands of youths in this country. He is the architecture of Batalanda torture chambers. He has done immense damage to our country in the past and we should not allow this power hungry dictator to Govern this country as his own. He damn cares about the Sinhala people or the Buddhist religion. People must understand this crazy traitor and stand up to fight all the evil elements to this country without thinking anymore.

We are getting a chance soon to send him home for good and we shouldn’t miss it. Let’s Sinhalese get together and build a new party under Mahinda Rajapksa and rule this country for many years to come. Any leader who comes to power by our vote should work for the Sinhala people and must safeguard our religion Buddhism without going to please others first. This is our Sinhala homeland and no one have the right to claim an inch from it. We want all citizens of Sri Lanka to live unitedly as one family without creating unnecessary problems. Americans,West and the Indians should keep their hands off from this sovereign nation of ours. We love peace but not with these American backed UNP thugs.

  7. Christie Says:

Namaste: Look mates if Ranil or Sirisena step out of Indian path they will be no more. Third Eye will fix them. Jai Hind.

  8. SA Kumar Says:

He can still save his reputation if he can remove the 13A- 13A untouchable until BNP or Congress in power !!!
eg: When MS was in India no question asked about 13A why because already 13A implemented can you see Indian flag is flying in Jaffna not your Lion or Our Koddiya flag !

You modayas lost our Eelam to Indian for VP’s head !!!

  9. Susantha Wijesinghe Says:

    RANJIT !!! JUST A SUGGESTION.****NIDAHASE NAYAKA.****

  10. Mr. Bernard Wijeyasingha Says:

    Quoting the article:

“When the Tamil leadership passes a resolution projecting the entire Sinhala race as murderers of Tamils and accusing the entire leadership, including Wickremesinghe’s blood relatives, as genocidal barbarians, it was his prime duty, as the Prime Minister, to defend the nation and its great leaders.”

NO. It is no one’s duty to Defend against lies. I can accuse anyone of anything. then to take a defensive stand against my lies actually validates my lies. Instead see the lies for what they are AND GO ON THE OFFENSIVE!!!!

IF TAMILS ENGAGE IN BLATANT LIES AND THE WORLD IS WILLING TO ACCEPT THEM AS IS THE CASE WITH THE UNHRC, NEW DELHI, CHENNAI, TAMIL DIASPORA, USA

THEN IT IS THE DUTY OF THOSE BEING ACCUSED TO BRING OUT THE TRUTH OF THE ACCUSERS.
ACCUSE THE TAMILS OF THE GENOCIDE THEY COMMITTED ON THE SINHALESE
ACCUSE THE TAMILS FOR SUPPORTING THE TAMIL TIGERS FOR THE DIVISION OF SRI LANKA TO CREATE ELAM
ACCUSE THE TAMILS FOR CONTINUING TO DO SO WHEN TAMIL NADU HOSTS PRO LITE ORGANIZATIOS, TNA CONSULTS CHENNAI ON DOMESTIC ISSUES AND TAMILS GANGING UP IN THE ELECTIONS TO OUST RAJAPAKSE SO THEY CAN PUT IN A COALITION WHO WILL GIVE THEM ELAM OR MORE AUTONOMY UNDER THE GUISE OF DEMOCRACY.

  11. Lorenzo Says:

    FULLY AGREE WITH HIRANTHE.

But the BLIND MR SUPPORTERS cannot see this!!

They just chant the MR mantra!! MR, MR, MR, MR.

But there is NO presidential election anytime soon. So GR is OUT. UNP-TNA-SLMC-13 amendment will ENSURE GR will NOT survive until 2021 for the next presidential election. Unless My3 doesn’t survive.

    1. Let the 100 day program make the PM the POWERFUL position.

    2. Then make MR the (powerful) PM.

Otherwise MR will be another DMJ as Hiranthe said. NO power even if he wins.

For me Peace was enough to worship him because I know every time I visited Sri Lanka in those days I have never been to outside except to the grocery to buy few things that much we were afraid those days. I never thought in my life that we can get rid of LTTE or Prabakaran. When that day arrived I was surprised and couldnt believe it. I was so proud of our war heroes and from that day Mahinda & Gota were my heroes. I will never change my liking to both of them. They are in my heart for ever.

At the moment I am very sad about the situation in my country and specially about the Sinhala Buddhists. I am surprised to see that no one is protesting against this illegal Govt or against their behavior towards the very people who brought us freedom from war of thirty years. People have forgotten the suicide bombers and the destruction those LTTE Barbarians inflict on us. Why the Southerners wont protest same like Northerners for their kith and kin slaughtered by the LTTE? Have they forgotten the 700 policeman who was massacred by LTTE killers? We too have the right to protest and ask for answers and we should start now itself from these Jarapalanaya thugs who was their friends at that time. We need a movement to fight for Sinhala Buddhist rights and to safeguard the homeland and the only man who can be trusted is Rajapksa our President.

Raj Yoga (Hindu) is all about connecting to God/Truth/Sathya within ourselves

Prayer is us talking to God/Truth. Meditation is God/Truth talking to us.

Think, dear people ! War/killing for the sake of Peace does Not work. In our spiritual quest, Ignorance of our true nature is the greatest enemy. We are all made of the same stuff, no difference inside, once the skin tone, religion, and ethnicity are removed. No one born differently or die differentlt either !

  18. Fran Diaz Says:

    sorry lots of typos
Read as not to make ANY religion …

  19. Fran Diaz Says:

I am suggesting a PM and three Educated, savvy people to govern Lanka ONLY after 13-A is removed. Of course, there can be a Parliament and Ministers, all smaller in number the better, after the 13-A is gone.

The Tamil problem is in aTamil Nadu, where the Caste problem exists. Do not import Caste problems to Lanka. The Buddha dismissed Caste. He said that only by one’s Actions is one low born or high born. May be Tamil Nadu should embrace Buddhism, as Buddhism did exist there at one time. Then Tamil Nadu will cease to be a problem for both India
(Delhi) as well as Lanka. B. Rex will have to sort out their own problems. If Lanka and India can help in a peaceful manner, so be it !

  20. Lorenzo Says:

    Fran,

Only 5,000 Buddhists live in Tamil Madu. The SMALLEST religion!

Tamil culture and Buddhism are NOT compatible.

  21. Fran Diaz Says:

    Lorenzo,
So change that ! All those in Tamil Nadu interested in a lasting peace can change their religion to Buddhism.

  22. Lorenzo Says:

    Fran,

    Why should they CHANGE?

Tamil madu has near PERFECT PEACE today, to tell you the TRUTH.

TN never had a revolution in 1971 kiling 20,000 youth.
TN never had a revolution in 1989 killing 100,000 youth.
TN never had a war killing 100,000+ from 1983 to 2009.

So there is NO reason for TN to change. TN is more peaceful than SL.

Tamils from TN illegally cross to SL for ECONOMIC REASONS and because SL recognizes the Tamil language. Similarly RICH SL Tamils have properties (mostly apartments) in Chennai today. They are VERY expensive. Some RICH SL Tamils (of ALL castes) have settled down in Chennai. TN’s IT industry attracts SL Tamils of ALL castes.

  23. Fran Diaz Says:

Yeah, perfect peace in Tamil Nadu – that’s why Tamils FLEE Tamil Nadu ! About 15 Million would flee if they can.

  24. Lorenzo Says:

They don’t flee as much as SL Tamils AND Sinhalese FLEE SL!!

In the past 32 years over 1,000,000 SL Tamils left SL. Over 400,000 Sinhalese left SL. For a 21 million population that is HUGE.

Migration rate of TN per year 4 persons per 1000 persons.
Migration rate of SL per year 12 persons per 1000 persons.

TN never had wars and revolutions SL had killing so many people.

    Lets face FACTS.
