Government leaders, including President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake, will hold a crisis meeting tomorrow to find an urgent solution to the fertilizer issue, Agriculture Minister Duminda Dissanayake said.

He said his ministry arranged the meeting as farmers from several parts of the country were complaining about a fertilizer shortage. The minister said the shortage was artificially created by traders who had hoarded stocks, expecting a price increase.
These traders make farmers pay more for subsidised fertilizer,” he said.

The minister urged farmers to inform the ministry and Consumer Affairs Authority if any trader was hoarding fertilizer stocks and warned that tough action would be taken against the offenders.Meanwhile paddy and vegetable farmers said they were badly affected by the shortage of fertilizer and the Government’s policy decision to stop subsidising fertilizer.

Vegetable farmer W. Rupasinghe said many famers had to share or borrow fertilizer to cultivate their crops. He accused the Government of resorting to various ruses to force the farmers to give up cultivation and sell their land to companies.

GAMARALA SIRISENA HAS BETRAYED HIS OWN KIND – FARMERS. Ayyo Sirisena!

IF we can make of this to the MAXIMUM, we can topple this govt. My3 and Run-nil CANNOT agree on this.

One massive strike should be organized bringing GOVT. SERVANTS, DOCTORS, FARMERS, ENGINEERS, TEACHERS, UNIVERSITY STUDENTS, POLITICIANS, ARMY PERSONNEL, SANGHA, etc. on a single week until the govt. resigns.

  2. Susantha Wijesinghe Says:

LORENZO !! ARMY PERSONNEL CANNOT GET INVOLVED AS THEY ARE UNDER A VERY STRICT DISCIPLINARY CODE, WHICH CANNOT BE BREACHED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. THEY ARE THE FIRST DEFENDERS OF THE COUNTRY. THE REST CAN.

I DO REMEMBER, LONG YEARS BACK, I CANNOT REMEMBER UNDER WHAT REGIME, THE GOVERNMENT BROUGHT IN LEGISLATION TO BAN STRIKES BY ESSENTIAL SERVICES, VIS-A-VIS TRANSPORT, SHIPPING, MEDICAL PERSONNEL. COULD THAT HAPPEN AGAIN ??

  3. Lorenzo Says:

    SW,

You are absolutely correct. It is STILL in force.

BUT given the danger to SL (foreign judges coming to judge the army) they have to take the side of the PEOPLE. Otherwise what will happen is the govt. will USE the military to KILL the people.

Army NEED NOT strike but REFUSE to take orders from the govt. to SHOOT people. That is their contribution.

  4. Fran Diaz Says:

Killing MORE Sinhala/Buddhists of Sri Lanka, by their own Govt !

Something wrong with the governments of Lanka, except for the DS, Dudley, JR, MR govts. ….. !

    STOP KILLING SINHALA/BUDDHISTS !

  5. Lorenzo Says:

    Fran,

“except for the DS, Dudley, JR, MR govts.”

    NOT TRUE.

Dudley shot dead Singhala people in 1953.
JR shot dead Singhala people in 1980, 1987, 1988.
MR shot dead Singhala people in 2012 and 2013.

ONLY DSS, SWORD-B, DB, Maru Sira and CBK (can’t find any evidence) did NOT kill Singhala people.

  6. SA Kumar Says:

ONLY DSS, SWORD-B, DB, Maru Sira and CBK (can’t find any evidence) did NOT kill Singhala people.- That why sinhala people kill them luckly some got early natural dead eg: SRDB killed , CBK’s(half) housband killed , soon …….
