Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has offered conditional support to a mega Chinese investment project in the Hambantota District.

Former President Rajapaksa yesterday told The Island that his support would depend on the Sirisena-Wickremesinghe government and China agreeing to adopt the original investment plan finalised during his administration.

Dismissing allegations that he had planned to sell land in Hambantota to the Chinese, the former President said that during a visit to Beijing last year he had explained the situation. “The extent of land we planned to hand over in Hambantota was much smaller,” he said.

    Bravo, President Mahinda Rajapaksa!

Your plan provided for getting the Chinese investment but gave away only a 40% share in return, and retained ALL Administrative, Legal and Navigational control in Sri Lankan hands, and only the land area of the Port to be leased for a period of 49-years.

That is a PATRIOTIC PLAN crafted by a PATRIOTIC leader of our Motherland.

In addition, it should be ensured that the MAJORITY of the JOBS at the Port go to Sri Lankan workers.

We don’t want a MASSIVE INFLUX of foreign workers, in this case Chinese, into our country which in time will change its demographics against the Sinhala community.

Yes! Let us GO AHEAD with the ORIGINAL Hambantota Port deal as CRAFTED by President Mahinda Rajapaksa!

No! Let us REJECT the Yamapalana deal that gives 80% equity, total Administrative and Jurisdictional control on a 99-year renewable lease and offers to alienate 15,000 acres of land to China, without limits on the iigration and settling of foreign workers in Sri Lanka! That is the kind of deal only an UNPATRIOTIC Govt hellbent on MIS-GOVERNANCE would inflict on Sri Lanka to yoke us to a new form of COLONIAL SERVITUDE!

    We want economic-partners, NOT neo-colonial slave-masters!

  2. Hiranthe Says:

    Well said Ananda!!

We don’t wand neo-colonial Slave-masters either from the West, China or Endia.

  3. Dilrook Says:

Glad the former president finally accepted that he planned to “hand over land to the Chinese” in Hambantota. Sadly, it came after the present government threatened to disclose this fact with documentary evidence. He should have been more credible had he made this clear a few months ago.

Mahinda did the right thing though unpopular and this government is also doing the right thing in Hambantota. LTTE Rump owns far more land in the island than 15,000 acres. So does India.

Good timing by the former president as the deal is about to be finalised. Given the debt situation, it is the best available.

  4. Ananda-USA Says:

    Dilrook,

MR DID NOT HIDE ANYTHING to be characterized as “finally admitting” as you put it! You have NOTHING NEW to be “glad” about now than what was there ever since the Port project was initiated by MR.

The terms of MR’s deal was ALWAYS CRYSTAL CLEAR: Port construction on a interest bearing long term loan from China, and use of the Port and land in the Port zone during a 49-year lease in return for a 40% equity stake to China, with administrative, jurisdictional and port navigation control remaining entirely in Sri Lankan hands!

There was NEVER ANY DOUBT, or hidden aspects, behind that deal! MR is just RESTATING the terms of his original deal!

We can be GLAD if the Yamapalanaya revises the deal to CONFIRM to the ORIGINAL DEAL that it CRITICIZED DEMONIZING the Chinese!

EVERYTHING they have done have BACKFIRED on the Yamapalanaya and the citizenry of Sri Lanka who will have to pay for their IDIOCY and CRIMINAL NEGLIGENCE!

  5. Fran Diaz Says:

We agree with Ananda. The MR Govt was above board in their dealings with China. The facts are clear for the Public to see – the deal was with NO threat to Lanka.

Also, the MR Govt deal with China was with the Chinese govt, was it not ?
The Yahap deal is with a Chinese private company, isn’t it ?

There certainly is a significant difference in that.

SL is amidst a SWINE FLU PANDEMIC. Our health minister is a DISASTER and a LIAR. I fear for the people.

Already Peradeniya University has been CLOSED due to this. Students told to VACATE hostels IMMEDIATELY.

Govt. is NOT telling the TRUTH.

    It came from MALDIVES.

ALL schools in the Maldives CLOSED for 3 weeks due to SWINE FLU.

    POSTPONE your travel to SL.

  7. Fran Diaz Says:

It is very lax on the part of the Health Authorities in Sri Lanka to have allowed such sickly people with a deadly contagious disease into the country. If Sri Lankans want to help Maldivians with Swine Flu, they ought to take the medicines and Doctors to the Maldives. That is the right thing to do !
Also, most people enter Lanka and do not go back.

Here is an article from the internet on how INDIA tackles Swine Flu virus disease. Homeopathy is effective for viral diseases. There are a number of articles on the net on the efficacy of Homeopathy for Swine Flu.

‘Homeopathy can prevent, cure swine flu’

TIMES OF INDIA, Aug 18, 2009, 12.00 AM IST

‘Homeopathy can prevent, cure swine flu’

Homeopathy can both prevent and cure swine flu, sans any side effects, say doctors who practise this alternative medicine system in India where over 700 people have been diagnosed with the disease.
Amid panic over the spread of influenza A (H1N1) virus, homeopaths are now drafting a proposal for the health ministry to offer their services in tackling the crisis.
“Based on the symptoms, homeopathy can offer an effective cure to swine flu. Moreover, it does not have any side effects,” says Harcharanjeet Kaur, a homeopath at Baksons homeopathy clinic.
Well-known Delhi-based homeopath Mukesh Batra cited the instance of the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918 in which more than 50 million people were killed worldwide. He said the mortality rate of people given allopathic treatment was 28.2 percent, while those given homeopathic treatment was 1.05 percent at that time.
“Gelsemium and Bryonia were the two homeopathic remedies that proved to be effective against the H1N1 strain back then. These could be of great use even today,” Batra said.
Explaining the way homeopathy works, Jaipur-based homeopath Manish Bhatia said this form of medicine works on the basis of symptoms and not the disease.
“In homeopathy, there is a concept called Genus epidemicus. This means if there is an epidemic and you take the symptoms of say 15 ailing people of an area, you will notice a common trend. Based on that you give medication – for the symptoms. This same medication then, if given to people of that area, can act as a preventive medicine,” Bhatia said phone.
Besides symptoms like running nose, fever, sneezing and dullness that are the same for common flu and swine flu patients, those suffering from the latter may also have gastric problems like nausea and vomiting, Bhatia said.
“Based on the symptoms, there may be different curative medications for different cases of swine flu. One or two of these medications will be used more frequently than the others and this can then be given to others as preventive medication,” Bhatia said.
So why WHO (the World Health Organisation) or the health ministry has not taken homeopathy’s help in tackling the H1N1 outbreak?
“WHO relies on statistical data before advising governments on tackling a disease. And there is no study on the effectiveness of homeopathy to prevent or cure swine flu. Therefore it cannot recommend homeopathy,” Bhatia said.
“Having said that, a group of homeopathy doctors are drafting a proposal to the government to offer their services to help in dealing with swine flu cases,” Bhatia said.
“In Brazil, the homeopathic doctors’ community has collected data on the symptoms of swine flu and homeopathic treatments for symptoms and are spreading the word on its effectiveness through internet,” he added.

    Recommended By Colombia
Anwar Amir, secretary general of the homeopathy post graduate association in Maharashtra, said he has written to the union health ministry and the state government’s health department offering their services to deal with the swine flu crisis.
More than 616 people have been detected with H1N1 virus so far in India, of which 487 have been discharged. The disease has claimed one life in India.
People however should not panic. The chances of dying of swine flu are just as low as dying of common flu, homeopathic doctors said unanimously.
Giving an example of the effectiveness of homeopathy in an epidemic in India, Batra said when Japanese encephalitis hit Andhra Pradesh 10 years ago, the government distributed one million doses of Belladonna, a homeopathic drug, to children.
“No child was affected by Japanese encephalitis after that. Therefore, homeopathy can provide an effective and inexpensive preventive measure and cure for swine flu too,” Batra said.

  9. Fran Diaz Says:

Going again to deals with China –
the Chinese PM told the west recently that China wants a win-win situation re deals.
    We Agree !
Lanka too needs win-win outcomes re all the deals with foreign countries. Yahap should say so at the outset to all the foreign deals. Are the Yahap top people up to saying so ? That is not the message we are getting, so far.

  10. Ananda-USA Says:

Is there really a SWINE FLU outbreak in Sri Lanka and are Maldivian visitors responsible?

Here is a news article that says NO to both questions.

    …………
Swine Flu Panic Sets In Sri Lanka

    March 19, 2017
    Colombo Telegraph

Panic has set among Sri Lankans of a possible Swine Flu (H1N1) outbreak in the country, amidst unconfirmed reports that a large number of Swine Flu affected Maldivians had arrived in Colombo for treatment.

An SMS alert making the rounds claimed that over 200 Maldivians with the swine flu had arrived in the country unmonitored and had checked themselves in to Lanka Hospital for treatment, however Group Chief Executive Officer of Lanka Hospitals Dr. Prasad Medawatte issued a statement rejecting the reports which were circulating in social media that Maldivian patients diagnosed with swine flu were admitted to Lanka Hospitals and had died. “Lanka Hospitals wishes to announce that only 12 Maldivian patients have been admitted currently at Lanka Hospitals, out of which 10 are surgical and 2 are medical patients; none with swine flu,” he said on Friday.

However, an OPD patient who had made an appointment to channel a doctor at the hospital said that he had decided to skip his appointment because despite the assurance from the hospital, he did not want to take the risk. “The truth is Lanka Hospital has a lot of Maldivian patients and there can be a possibility that there are even one or two patients with the flu, so I don’t want to take the unnecessary risk,” he said.

He also pointed out that a large number of Maldivians travel to Sri Lanka very regularly for medical and education purposes, and although Maldives reported about the virus outbreak early this week, the Sri Lankan airport did not have any mechanism over the past week to screen anyone coming into the country from Maldives. “So there can be a possibility of Maldivians with the virus who may have travelled to Sri Lanka,” he noted

Meanwhile, SriLankan airlines on Friday announced that it had activated the Communicable Disease Procedures on its flights that are operating in and out of Male. “Accordingly the crew will be wearing face masks and will provide a face mask to any passenger who requests one to wear during a flight,” the airline said.

By Saturday morning, Maldivian authorities said that the H1N1 had infected a total of 114, even though there was a drop in the number of people visiting hospitals in Maldives. Maldivian authorities were compelled to shut down schools and the state university in the Male Capital during the week due to the outbreak.

    Seasonal Influenza in Sri Lanka

World Health Organization Report, Country Office for Sri Lanka
    Report Date: Unknown

Seasonal influenza viruses circulate and cause disease in humans every year. In Sri Lanka, for the last few years, it has been generally observed during April to June and again in November to January. It spreads from person-to-person through sneezing, coughing, or touching contaminated surfaces. Seasonal influenza viruses can cause mild to severe illness and even death, particularly in some high-risk individuals. Persons at increased risk for severe disease includes pregnant women, the very young and very old, immune-compromised people, and people with chronic underlying medical conditions such as cancer, diabetes mellitus and heart diseases. Seasonal influenza viruses evolve continuously, which means that people can get infected multiple times throughout their lives. Therefore the components of seasonal influenza vaccines are generally reviewed biannually and updated periodically to ensure continued effectiveness of the vaccines. Recently, the National Drug Regulatory Authority of Sri Lanka has given license for the use of seasonal influenza (flu) vaccine.

There are three large groupings or types of seasonal influenza viruses, labeled A, B, and C. Type A influenza viruses are further divided into subtypes according to the specific variety and combinations of two proteins that occur on the surface of the virus, the hemagglutinin or “H” protein and the neuraminidase or “N” protein. Currently, influenza A (H1N1) is the commonly circulating seasonal influenza A virus subtype in Sri Lanka. During the current season, it has been observed to generally cause severe disease. This seasonal A (H1N1) virus is the same virus that caused the influenza pandemic and it first appeared in Sri Lanka in two waves during 2009/ 10 period.

In addition, there are two type B viruses that are also circulating as seasonal influenza viruses, which are named after the areas where they were first identified, Victoria lineage and Yamagata lineage. Type C influenza causes milder infections and is associated with sporadic cases and minor localized outbreaks. As influenza C poses much less of a disease burden than influenza A and B, only the latter two are included in seasonal influenza vaccines.

    @Ananda

Mahinda’s plans for Hambantota development with Chinese investments (a very good plan which should have happened if not for regime change) referred above as “the original investment plan finalised during his administration”.

Quoting the above – Dismissing allegations that he had planned to sell land in Hambantota to the Chinese, the former President said that during a visit to Beijing last year he had explained the situation. “The extent of land we planned to hand over in Hambantota was much smaller,” he said.

It is news to me that Mahinda planned to hand over land in Hambantota to the Chinese. This is the first time I’m hearing it from him.

  14. Lorenzo Says:

    USA,

    You believe RAJITHA’s narrative!

When did SL close a UNIVERSITY due to INFLUENZA?

SL has a SWINE FLU pandemic. Govt. is trying to COVER IT UP as usual. USELSS Rajitha is covering up his FAILURES.

Then there is DENGU EPIDEMIC – the WORST in history!!

Welcome to WONDER OF ASIA JAMANPALANA style!

  15. Ananda-USA Says:

    Katussa (Lorenzo),

I believe NOTHING about the SWINE FLU situation; I simply don’t have sufficient information yet to separate FACT from FICTION. I am merely PRESENTING some seemingly credible information that I found. U. Peradeniya seems to be the hardest hit; there is no information on how much it has affected the general public.

Regarding the DENGUE situation also, there is also very little information on the severity and regional distribution.
I expect Dengue to be much worse this year in the drought affected areas where small pools of water proliferate, creating more breeding sites for mosquitoes.

Dengue is a terrible mosquito borne disease that allows blood to leak from the blood circulatory system into other areas of the body.

When Dengue first arrived in Sri Lanka from Egypt, about the time that King Arthur was presiding at the Round Table in Camelot (LOL), I was sitting for my GCE O-Level exam (14 or 15 years age), I contracted Dengue fever, and my right leg became completely immobilized in a bent position. I resisted the advice of the doctor who wanted to operate on my spine to unbend my knee so I could walk upright. They were unfamiliar with dengue then and their prognoses on my recovery were rather bleak. I survived after 6 weeks in bed. with intensive hydration, and missing my classes at school and the term exams. When I returned to school the next term about 3 weeks later, I was so weak that I could not maintain balance while walking. It was a miracle that I was still able to ace the GCE O-Level exam, or my hopes of becoming an engineer would have evaporated.

This truly frightening experience that makes me quite wary of Dengue. Two decades later, I contracted Dengue in Sri Lanka once again, was hospitalized in the USA upon my return, and was placed on a saline drip, when I started to leak blood into my urine!

Because of this experience, I am taking every step I can to protect my adopted children in rural areas of Sri Lanka, especially those sitting for the GCE exams, and have advised them about preventative measures, including applying citronella oil or 34% DEET lotion on their exposed skin areas.

  16. Lorenzo Says:

Govt. is COVERING UP the situation as always. Otherwise people will CURSE them for INCOMPETENCE.

We all know how they MISHANDLED the 2016 FLOOD. This is another crisis this INCOMPETENT govt. of FOOLISH MINISTERS cannot handle.

IF there is NO PANDEMIC they won’t vacate an entire university.
Schools in MALDIVES are closed since MARCH.
SL has 200,000 Maldivians travelling up and down.

TOURISTS should be warned of the danger. Too bad it will WORSEN the FOREX crisis and bring the govt. to the BRINK. Otherwise IF many tourists get these they will ALWAYS avoid SL.

    Stay safe and well, USA!

    Appreciate your good work.

  17. aloy Says:

When it comes to disasters our people are never ready to handle them. And also our leader or officials do not have the foresight to predict them. In 2016 at leaqst four days before the actual floods came BBC was showing the cyclone heading for Sri lanka and we even warned our relatives about their forecast that they gave every hour. All the while not even a word from our met department or any SL’s media. The reason we came to know couple of weeks later was that the equipment to handle such forecast which were imported could not be transported to a hilltop as they were too bulky and were rusting away. The tiger war was also similar and they had to wait until someone like Gota arrived to tackle it in a systematic way.

Now they want to give our strategic assets to world powers not knowing the direction the world is moving. Hambanthota is about the most strategic location with its big port that can handle the largest ships in the world. The western world is declining very fast economically and the eastern countries will overtake them within the next few years. These western powers are only basking in their former glory. India and China are developing technologically at a very fast rate. Even in the US the real work horses are Indians. We must not forget the fact that from about the 7th century up to the time of europeon domination the the straight of Malacca was controlled by the Malays of Malaysia and Indonesia at a place known as Palembang. No sooner their power waned Chinese started ruling the waves and even came and attacked us twice ultimately taking our king a prisoner. Already they have taken control of South China Sea and western powers are unable to do anything about it. Not only that they are secretly helping the North Koreans to develop the ICBMs and Donald Trump has already warned them about it. Ninety eight years is a long time, even fifty is too much. Both China and India are too big for us to handle and our foolish leaders who took over the country by deception for only five years should not be allowed to do anything with both Hambanthota and Trinco. First they should give confidence to citizens by handling bond scams and other wasteful expenditure.

  18. Lorenzo Says:

Swine flu: Qataris urged not to travel to Sri Lanka

    Doha

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has urged Qatari nationals not to travel to Sri Lanka due to health reasons.
The ministry issued a statement in this regard on Tuesday.
In the statement, an official source at the Department of Consular Affairs, MoFA, said the Sri Lankan official authorities confirmed the spread of swine flu (H1N1) in Sri Lanka, and reported the infection of a number of people with the disease and the death of some of them.
The source urged Qatari nationals not to travel to Sri Lanka except in cases of extreme necessity until health conditions improved.
